So lets start with some honesty, its memorial day weekend (MDW) and its slightly past 4pm. My group and I came after a long day under the sun on Long beach and were completely famished. I immediately yelped the nearest food joins and here appears Swingbelly BBQ, a Smokehouse, and I love me some slow cooking smokey cuts on meat. Since most of my peeps don't eat swine, there were other options luckily to explode. We were 6 people, half ordered chicken salads ($15), I know who does that right? Its a SMOKEHOUSE People!! I don't get it honestly. I ordered their original Classic BBQ brisket topped with cole slaw ($12) and a side of salad ($4). It was very upsetting to sit there and watch customers who got seated after us get their food first. We waited patiently over 50 minutes after ordering to receive our food. Waste of time. My brisket was tasty, but i was also ready to swallow my fist, so not exactly sure whether it was actually good. The Chicken salad was awful for the price and came out with cold chicken... like refrigerator cold. I understand its MDW and it may be a busy time, but the place was only half full, compared to the beach house which was completely packed and had a 45 minute wait. The service was absolutely horrible, with dirty tables and lack of service. They brought us our plates topped with loose silverware and placed it on the end of the table for us to distribute, like here, you figure it out. All of the silverware was toppled over and fell on the table, plates half washed and still wet. I mean come on! totally unhygienic. After the server took our order she disappeared, trying not to stop at our table to make up excuses why the food is taking long. What I don't understand is why it was taking long. It was 3 salads and 2 brisket sandwiches. The brisket is supposed to be already cooked, right? and the salads came out plain with cold chicken. 50 Minutes for that?! Nothing creative or requires much prep. I know because I worked in kitchens before. Bathroom was atrocious with toilet paper all over the floor and beer glasses by the stalls. And what was up with your nachos?! did you open a bag of Doritos and place cheese on top. I was convinced that was exactly what I tasted and they even looked the same.. coincidence...? I think not. I have been a big fan of Swing Bellie's for a long time and they have been a great Long Beach staple. They have always had great service and even better food. Sadly, my last few experiences have been disappointing. It seems that a lot of changes have been made, and not for the better. Living on the West end, I love ordering Take-out on nights I need comfort food, but don't want to cook. In the past, the food has always been amazing, and beyond expectations. However, recently the orders have been missing items, or just been completely wrong. Considering I still adore the food, this Friday, my boyfriend and I decided to eat lunch at restaurant. After waiting by the front for a few minutes, We were greeted by a member on the staff who we initially thought was a patron because he was sitting at the bar in a hoodie, and told to sit wherever we would like, and that a server would be over shortly. The restaurant was empty besides one other table, so we picked a nice big booth in the corner. After some time, a waitress came to the table asked if we knew what we wanted. We asked if she had a cocktail list available, she scoffed, rolled her eyes and pointed to the beer list near the wall. I asked if they still made the great pint-sized cocktails, and without answering, she turned around to the bar, grabbed a dinner menu with the cocktail list and tossed it down on the table, then walked away. My boyfriend and I were a little shocked about her rude behavior, but just chalked it up to the server having a bad day. When she came back to take the drink orders, she scoffed again and asked "do you know what you want to order yet?". Apparently, she was having a really bad day. I wish that that was the end of our unpleasant experience, but it wasn't. The drinks were watered down, definitely not the normal, delicious Swing Bellie's drinks. Afterwards, our food was ok, but mostly mediocre. We ordered the fried pickle appetizer, which was great as always. However, our entrees were just bad. We ordered the BBQ grilled cheese, and the pulled chicken sandwich to share. The BBQ chicken sandwich was just cold chicken with a squirt of BBQ sauce on top, on a slightly warmed bun, no toppings or anything extra. The grilled cheese had much more filling, but very little cheese, and was very dry, cold and greasy. Neither sandwich came with any sort of side, so we decided to order mac and cheese as well as the mashed potatoes. Each side was $4, but were extremely small. The mashed potatoes were really watery and also a little cold. The Mac and cheese was good, but we wished we had more! Also, when we asked for plates so we could share, the server seemed mad, and gave us paper plates- which was strange. The bill came out and was sky high for lunch- definitely not worth the money. We left sad and disappointed. It definitely isn't what we have come to know or expect from one of our favorite restaurants. Maybe Swingbellie's is just going through some growing pains. I sincerely hope that the can sort out the hiccups that they've been having recently. There were epic in the past, and I hope that they can return to the amazing BBQ joint that I know and love! read more

Mac and cheese is the best, and it's huge! Also, best wings I've ever had. I physically can't eat wings anywhere else since having the ones here. My only complaint is that it seems every time I'm here, my glass can sit empty for a good 15-20 minutes before I'm able to even flag someone down to refill it. So, it's best to share a pitcher with your table instead. read more

Mostly great experiences here. We come here quite often and also do take out when we are not up for the bar scene. It's a place where you need to know what to order & what not to. I would have given 5 stars except for inconsistencies. My fave is the Big BBQ salad. It's amazing. Order it with the chicken or shrimp. The brisket is great & so is the mac & cheese. Sean the bartender is fantastic. So if he is working then sit at the bar! Great beer selection & you can sample if you are unsure. I went in a few weeks ago to place a take out order & wanted a drink at the bar while waiting. The bartender wouldn't take my order or help me find someone who would even though the hostess was MIA for about 10 minutes & then didn't even ask if I might want a drink. Instead she told me I couldn't sit at the bar if I was taking out. The hostess finally returned & then had an attitude because I gave a $2 dollar tip on my take out order. She literally typed my one item order into the computer & ran my credit card- that's all. Also it wasn't like the place was busy there were only 3 other customers in the whole place. Jeez. Making people feel crappy will not increase your tips. Summary: fantastic place if you get good service & know what to order. read more

I usually love Swingbellys however we just waited OVER an hour for our food and the waitress had the nerve to say after we paid with a few cards "just so you know, the manager is doing you a favor letting you pay with that many cards." Um excuse me? Well we waited over an hour, so we did YOU a favor waiting over an hour for our sandwiches. Also, when we asked where our food was after 50 minutes, she replied, "well I told you the food would take 20 Minutes." Wow obnoxious. And it's been more than 20 minutes. Get it together. read more

It's really more like 3.24 stars, but I feel obligated to offset the overly positive reviews. The people who work there, the people who hang out there --- GREAT people. They all deserve better food at better prices. Nothing really tastes that good. It's all a little bland or has a little too much of this or a little too much of that. The seasoning is all forgettable, like a Kraft bbq taste. The wings are OK, i'd stop in for them. The ribs are chinese food quality, if that. And the place's set up is just not great at all. It feels like someone set up picnic tables in their basement apartment, and then spent five times as much putting goofy crap on the walls in an effort to try and make it look like a BBQ place that isn't trying to look like a bbq place. There's peanuts. That's cool i guess. Great place if you have bad taste in food and can dilute yourself and said bad food with worse beer. So i just moved to Oceanside and couldn't wait to venture out to Long Beach since it's kind of my new "downtown". Swingbelly's is perfect for the neighborhood in that it has a relaxed atmosphere with great people, really good, fun food and strong drinks. Our server was really sweet and funny. I ordered the Borracho which she later referred to as a "Borrach" for short. When she asked me how my Borrach was doing, I felt my cheeks go red and I stammered for an appropriate answer. I must have misunderstood . . . wait what did she say?!?! OF COURSE - my DRINK! All the tequila in Borrach didn't help. During my next visit, my bf and I split the margarita which was also good though I wish it was made with all fresh ingredients and not that syrupy sour mix. The wings here are kept whole and they are marvelous!! The buffalo wings have a slight smokey bbq flavor that you don't normally get at other places. The house made blue cheese was a little mild for my taste but still good. The ribs were very good but they don't really stand out to me. I am planning to go back for a second taste, so I'll get back to you. The crowd in this place is generally fun-loving and relaxed which is great. Wish they had some cool music or a jukebox though. This place has some good BBQ. Everyday there is a special whether its Monday's "all you an eat wings" or Wednesdays "$1.00 ribs" as well as specials every other days during the week. I came here on a Wednesday and this place was pretty busy and I know why. For a complementary snack they did not serve the typical chips or bread they serve spicy peanuts, still in the shell!!! For appetizers we had some wings and these are not just small pieces of wings and legs, these are full wings and legs connected by the joints. We had it with the dry rub and it was one of the best wings I have had. If these are the wings they are promoting for "all you can eat" on Monday I will be there. For entrees we had the $1.00 ribs. I ordered 9 thinking it would not be enough due to my enormous appetite but it sure was enough. Ribs were juicy and not too saucy , which is the way I like it. I just wanted to add to my existing review since I've been here many more times since... First, I am just so happy that they've bounced back from Sandy and am so happy they're open again. This is one of my favorite LB Spots. Great BBQ, great staff, great customers, you can't ask for more! The layout is a bit different now with a larger bar on the left hand side of the restaurant. Awesome. I know I mentioned they have cheap Natty cans in my previous review and that may have tainted the next bullet I put stating that they have a great beer selection. But it's true, they do have a great beer selection. The beers they have on tap are always changing and are always GOOD, craft beers and sometimes they offer a lot of local brews, too! I'd also like to take a moment and mention their ribs. Um, hi, they're amazing. My favorite are the St. Louis. I like to get them dry because their rub is absolutely fantastic. Pickle Chips - What's not to like here? And the homemade dressing they serve it with is perfect. Mac-N-Cheese: Pure cheese perfection with crumbs on top. It's definitely a must have. read more

Okay. I seem to be against the others that have reviewed this joint. But I am probably the only one that gets everything delivered. I've never eaten here. The loaded fries with bacon and sour cream and cheese is awesome. Other than that, there's nothing I'm in love with from this place. My issue is that I'm not big on their bbq sauce altho it's fine and everything they serve tastes so dry some reason. I'm more the sauce lovin bbq eater as opposed to the "eat it dry bc you should appreciate the flavor of just the meat" cause it's not like people are serving the most unbelievable cuts of meat here or anything. MY bf and I LOVE this place! We are some of the biggest fans of buffalo style chicken wings and feel that these are some of the best we've ever tried--actually having difficulties now thinking of a comparable wing. They are served as a full win for you to tear through and have some of the whitest juiciest meat fried to perfection and rolled in some amazing sauces! The belly buster is a favorite of my other half and it is stuffed with all sorts of BBQ goodness. Mac and Cheese appetizer used to be called Mac and Pete and is the best restaurant Mac I've ever had-complete with pulled pork and onion straws. Well we went back to Swing Belly's and this time on a Thursday. Little did we know that it was "$1 Rib Night"...SCORE. My wife got 5 and I got 10...I guess this explains why I weigh nearly double her. The ribs have a nice dry rub on them...not the best I've had...probably should have got piled pork again but for $1 a rib you just can't beat it. We'll be back again. I am a frequent going to swing bellies. I LOVE their food and I always recommend getting their swingz and Mac and cheese. However I went out to swingbellies for just drinks at night and sat by the bar and the service was horrendous. The bar tenders were hooking up behind the bar and cuddling at the register. They were showing more PDA then my fiancé and I on the other side of the bar. I came for some good food and some good drinks but I didn't need the side show. They barely looked in my direction and I had to frequently flag them down. Love you swingbellies but this experience was a disappointment. read more

SwingBellys is my favorite BBQ spot hands down. Me and my fiance travel from Brooklyn on random days just to get a fix. Their food is spot on and just what you want to get when you visit a BBQ place. We always order the ribs and the wings with Mac & Cheese as a side. The Mac & Cheese is the best I have ever tasted. We also get the fried pickles to start which is one of my favs. I usually order the monster margarita and believe me this is one MONSTER margarita. No one seemed to be eating but it was a little late for lunch and too early for dinner, so I didn't think much of it. We weren't drinking but, the beer selection was good. So just when I thought things couldn't get any better, my 2 favorite spots on the West End join forces. The Speakeasy crew linked up with Swingbelly's recently, and the result is a subtle interior renovation, subtle changes to the menu (in my opinion for the better), and a greater selection of draft beers and cocktails. Bacon wrapped drumsticks, fried green tomatoes with bacon jam and bleu cheese crumbles, and bacon cheddar croquettes now join the menu for apps. Tried them all. Awesome. Most of the classics remain, some killer sandwiches (Cubano and cheesesteak are both amazing) and BBQ platters galore. A variety of smoke pit tacos now make an appearance too. And of course, Mac and Pete still graces the menu. Dough Hut now provides the dessert menu assist. Prices even went down slightly. Like I said in my previous review, Swings is awesome BBQ in a chill setting and I will continue to support them. read more

Underwhelming and kind of overpriced, and the staff acted like they had never dealt with the public before. Had to get into an argument over the VERY noisy phone with the staff who kept putting us on hold and yelling "I CAN'T HEAR YOU" about the four mini shrimp they had put on our shrimp salad which had iceberge lettuce, croutons, and, 4 mini shrimp (cut in half to appear larger). How much does a small shrimp cost at restaurant wholesale? Five cents? The sides were 3/5, nothing you couldn't make better at home. The pork/brisket platter was okay and portion was fair, but it was a bit dry and came with a tiny sauce packet. For $50 bucks and a lot less hassle buy yourself a nice brisket or filet mignon and lobster. I don't usually give bad reviews, but this was disappointing. read more

Eaten here a few times and, never been truly disappointed, atleast not enough to stop coming back. Platters are decent and you cant go wrong with them. Wings are also insanely amazing and are not your average wing, they're huge. Their 'Mac-n-Pete' is also a fan favorite, and fried pickle chips are a must. They have a constant circulation of seasonal draft beers which are always fantastic, and low-key have a pretty extensive whiskey collection. As a cool decor touch they even keep the handles for the old taps nailed to the ceiling. And for a restaurant that doubles as a bar, they have a pretty reasonable late night menu as well- which none of the other spots nearby have! read more

OK I was here last week & was super hungry. I had the brisket & BBQ chicken. It was FABULOUS. Every bite was just to die for. The sides I ordered were beans and coleslaw, again ... delicious. Service was great, unlike the other reviews I have read. Our waitress was awesome and on point. 1. Not the restaurants fault, but don't bring screaming children to a place for dinner and let them run ramped and not pay any attention to them as they shriek at the top of their lungs. Other patrons were looking at us wondering how we were tolerating them, as they kicked and shoved my chair from behind. 2. When I go to a BBQ , I want to leave disgustingly full feeling horrible about myself and with left overs. Not here, not even fries were included. A tiny little cucumber salad and your sandwich that's it. Though the food was good, we were starving and left starving. We will be back hopefully it will be better, because I love seeing them on the Polar Bear Plunge every year. read more

I did not expect to find good BBQ when I moved to Long Beach, so this place was a pleasant surprise! Here's a list of Dos and Don'ts based on my first experience there. Do: Take advantage of their specials. I was there for $1 rib night and it was well worth it. Order the smoked 1/2 chicken. It's delicious! Sit outside, but make sure you have a sweatshirt or something to keep you warm if it gets chilly. Order the macaroni and cheese - yummy! Don'ts: Order the Honey BBQ sauce unless you really like honey. It's 90% honey. Order a Bud Light. Take advantage of their beer selection! Order the empanadas. They are too fried and not worth the price! Eat the peanuts if you can't handle the heat. VERY SPICY! read more

This place is no Fatte Sau but it did hit the spot. I was looking for a semi-healthy Sunday night meal with my biffles when he decided to suggest Swingbellys, a bbq place on Long Beach. Not knowng where Long Beach was or what Swingbellys was, I agreed due to the fact that the other choice was Cheesecake Factory and nothing tasty comes from a factory. Lucky for us, Long Beach was in Long Island, not the California county that Snoop Dogg reps. We got there a tad bit early for our seats so we went across the street and got a few brewskis. Long Beach, if you havent been, is a very long and small island with water (beach) on both sides. The part of the island we were one, it was about three city blocks wide. You can walk from one side to the other. It was great. Gimme a house here. seriously. After a few Miller Lites, we walked back across the street to Swingbellys and were properly seated for our meal. Andddd of course there is a food challenge there waiting for us. My thunder buddy and his co-worker decided that they would take it upon themselves to try to complete this insane challenge (nearly 7 pounds of food) - 1 rack of ribs, 1/4 lb of briskets, 1/4 pound of pulled pork, 4 giant chicken wings, 2 pieces of texas toast, 1 cornbread, and two sides of their choice. As the sane bunch of the group, I had the combo beef brisket and pull pork with a side of corn on the cob. My giffle had the mac and peet. Mang, beef in mac and cheese in a abundant amount...i dunno why i never thought of that..seems so simple. verdict - beef brisket - good mac and peet - good pulled pork - they didnt really pull it all that much, it was just pieces of pork but eh still kinda good the challenge - cray cray. the thunder buddy ate about half and got a good weeks worth of lunch from the leftovers the co-worker - the 22nd person to ever finish the challenge...and probably the 923908092342 person to throw up after the challenge. This place used to be my favorite place to eat in long beach before the new owners. The sandwiches used to twice as big and on Texas toast. Now they give you half the meat and put it on a little dinky bun. You used to get a huge side that comes with the sandwich , but now you have to buy it separate and you get less of that too. Swingbellies used to remind me of the awesome bbq I ate when I lived in the South. Now it is just another mediocre bbq place among other mediocre bbq places.
