And fish-shaped taiyaki or bunggeobang pastries that feature custard or red bean filling--warm and sweet with a crispy exterior. The ube cookies were the only items that didn't blow my mind as the ube flavor was lost amongst the food coloring and white chocolate chips. The ube ice cream however was solid, with a mild and lightly sweet earthy flavor similar to taro or matcha. 8/10 recommend especially if you've never had bingsu or ube. You can't park directly in front of the store, so you have to park and walk to it. I ordered the tayiaki ice cream, which I got pineapple dole whip (dairy free) with the fish shaped waffle stuffed with Nutella and topped with sprinkles. It was delicious! I do normally like pineapple flavor so I did enjoy this. I also loved how the color was obviously a vibrant yellow. I originally wanted a pineapple and strawberry dole whip swirl, but the employee said the strawberry wasn't working. I was the first in line of the day, and I didn't like how they already had something that wasn't working. After I put in my order, I waited over 20 minutes for my ice cream. I understand that the waffle takes a second to make, but I didn't like how I waited so long. They feature two dairy free flavors too, which I love for us lactose-intolerant! I ordered pomegranate/watermelon dairy-free soft serve with a taiyaki - a fish-shaped waffle cone. You can choose your filling for the taiyaki, I chose the Nutella. The first time i had it, the waffle was warm and Nutella melted in my bite! So good and yummy. I will say it took a little while, over 15 minutes, to get be ready. The second time I visited I ordered the same thing. We were the only patrons at the time and the order took just as long again. This time the waffle was cold and hard. I really disappointed because I told my husband how good it was the first time. Every visit to Sweet Society fills me with such joy! The inside is aesthetically pleasing (for all you photo takers) and extremly clean. The staff are very friendly and will help you navigate through the menu if you need any help! The front of the store is also stocked with fun and yummy asian snacks and plushies haha so make sure to bring your wallet when you come!! So enough about the inside and staff, the food is PHENOMENAL! I have such a sweet tooth it's not even funny. My fav taiyaki pocket filling are the chocolate and the custard ones and everytime I visit, they're cooked the same, so I can go in expecting to bite into a crispy outside layer and a warm, fluffy layer inside. The ube ice cream is def one of my favs there as well. It's not overly sweet (even my friend who isn't a fan of sweets loved it!) and has such a smooth texture. My sister-in-law told me about BINGSU as she had recently tried it at an ice cream sweet shop in New Orleans. Discovered there was a place that offered it here in Baton Rouge named 'Sweet Society' and decided to try them out. 'Sweet Society' is located in a converted industrial building called the 'Electric Depot' on Government Boulevard. I did not even know this building existed as I don't go toward downtown often. Fair warning for anyone that wants to check out the sweet shop and or other businesses in this complex, many of them only open after 5:00 p.m. I think many are closed on Mondays as well. Please check their website before hitting the road. As to the BINGSU... For those of you who did not know (I didn't until recently), it's an ice cream treat made with a special machine that shaves the ice in such a way that it comes out in very tiny flakes. Think of a dessert that is a marriage of ice cream and snowball - the latter being a true wintertime SNOWball. Its consistency is very flaky and airy. The BINGSU has thiis flaky shaved ice cream at the bottom of the cup layered with fruit puree, then fresh fruit on top and whipped cream. Mine also had some tiny tapioca marshmallows at the bottom which added some chewy texture to it. OK - so did I love it, not really. It was nice, and I enjoyed it, but I would not say that I LIVED it. But I have to admit upfront that ice cream is not my craving when I think of wanting something sweet. It really doesn't matter what type of form it takes, I'm just not an ice cream aficionado. With that said I really enjoyed the airiness and lightness of this variation being that it was shaved and not heavy like traditional ice cream. I just like trying new things, and it was definitely unique. I originally wanted to get the mango version, but they were out of mango puree - so I opted for the strawberry BINGSU instead. I enjoyed it, but wish that 'Sweet Society' offered a smaller cup size. I kept the bottled water in the picture so you had some kind of size reference. They only sell one size for $9.50 and it was HUGE!!! If you're going there and sharing one cup between two people it would be perfect, but for one person it was just too much and I really couldn't finish it. Okay... if you're an absolute ice cream lover, maybe you would have finished the entire cup. But for me it was just overkill size-wise. 'Sweet Society' also offers some 'non-Bingsu' dairy treats. I saw a young man eating a soft serve UBE flavored ice cream cup that looked delicious, he confirmed It was fairy tasty and served in a normal size ice cream cup . I've heard about UBE before, it's a purple sweet potato type vegetable used in Asian sweets, and I'll definitely go back to give that a try. 'Sweet Society' shares a common interior hall and public bathrooms in the same 'Electric Depot' building alongside a ramen restaurant, but unfortunately I was there earlier in the day and the ramen restaurant didn't open until after 5:00 p.m. I look forward to going back to trying their Ramen and then maybe some Ube ice cream next door. read more

I love this place! It's one of my favorite ice cream stores in the city so would 10/10 recommend. They do seem to be short-staffed so sometimes orders might take a second, but I swear it's worth it. The Sweet Society is an Asian-inspired dessert place located in the central courtyard of the Electric Depot on Government Street. It can be accessed from its entrance to the courtyard, or from a hallway in the rear of Boru Ramen. This is a deliciously different dessert establishment! They have wonderful frozen selections, my current favorite is the purple yam! They have about four flavors per day, so you can mix it up from one visit to the next. These frozen treats can be best served (IMO) with a crunchy freshly made fish-shaped filled cone, and toppings. Another delightful frozen dessert is the Bingsu, which is a base of finely shaved ice, covered in fruit and fruit syrup, then topped with whipped cream. My current favorite is Mango, but the Strawberry version is a very beautiful and tasty choice. In addition to these frozen desserts, there are a selection of grab-and-go Asian snacks on the wall. There are some interesting choices here! A tip to save a little money is to show your receipt from eating at the adjacent Boru Ramen, you get a discount on your purchase. We ended up picking the ube-flavored ice cream and brown sugar one. They also provided options for fillings in the taiyakis (custard and red bean). There were several options for toppings. We chose pocky. Total came out to be ~$18. Overall, it was what I expected. The only feedback I have is they provide an option for the ice cream to be placed on top of the taiyaki with the taiyaki serving as the cone, instead of placing them both in a bowl. When I stopped back again a few weeks later, she remembered my name! I was so shocked because I know they see hundreds of customers in a day so it made a huge impact on me. I kept on coming! I'm obsessed with the Taiyaki pockets. I usually get the Nutella filled one since I have a big sweet tooth. The pocket itself isn't an overly sweet treat though. The batter is delicious. It reminds me of a waffle in a way -- it's truly yummy enough to eat plain. Along with the pockets, I love how they alternate ice cream flavors. My personal favorite was the Ube (purple) and pandan (green) flavors swirled. The inside is also so cute! There's a photo op in every corner. This place is a gift sent from heaven! It's hard to put into words how much I appreciate and love this place. As an Asian American from the DMV area, it's like a little piece of home right here in Baton Rouge. If you're new the first thing I would recommend is their icecream! Their flavors are unique and sooooo good. Optional toppings and a tasty taiyaki (fish-shaped cake) in a cup - do it! If you opt for a cone the taiyaki will be your cone and you can pick which filling you want inside plus the Icecream on top. They have a few flavors at a time and switch them out for something new every once in a while so you should get them while you can. I've tried ube, Ghirardelli chocolate, Hokkaido milk, wintermelon, strawberry, lychee, and I think honeydew. All Amazing. If you can't pick just one you can get a swirl mix of two ;) Current flavors: ube, pandan, ghirardelli chocolate, Hokkaido milk. I'd also highly recommend getting some taiyaki pockets. It's a fish-shaped "cake" (no actual fish involved) - crispy on the outside, perfectly doughy on the immediate inside (like mochi! my fav surprise part of the taiyaki), and filled with a filling of your choice. I personally always pick the red bean filling - classic. If you get some to go and it's cold by the time you drive home you can always pop it in an air fryer or oven and it's as good as new. If you're craving a drink they have refreshing fruit tea/milk tea. If you want other snacks they have a wall of deliciousness (pocky, hi-chew, Hello panda, etc). I need to go back to try their Korean bingsu (shaved ice dessert)! Really long post but last but not least, the owner Kay! I cannot say enough great things about her.
