They were out of the dairy free gluten-free cupcakes. The owners here are really nice and friendly. There's street parking as well. I would definitely come back when I'm in the area. I really enjoy this cute little bakery in the heart of downtown OC. I really wanted dessert one day and stopped in here to see what they had. It ended up being a nice variety! They have cupcakes, cookies, cheesecake, cake, mousse and an assortment of chocolates. A really nice couple owns the place and makes everything. All of the desserts I have tried have been delicious! I live in California and offered to buy the two cakes for my first grandson's 1st Birthday party in Portland. I needed a sheet cake for the 20-25 guests and a Smash cake for the birthday boy celebrating "One Happy Camper". I interviewed a couple of bakeries - several times - trying to get a feel for the products they offer and the nit-picking I wanted with the cakes. I settled on Sweet Masterpieces and especially liked the helpfullness of Crystal in making and decorating the cakes for the occation. The crowd went wild when the cakes were brought in. The compliments flowed over the look and taste of the cakes. (I had made sure everyone knew I got the cakes.) My grandson performed the super task of smashing the cake and eating a healthy dose. Everyone cheered. The white cake with lemon curd filling and modified cream cheese frosting was absolutely delicious. The Smash cake green onbre, did not go to waste, as my husband and I took home (to CA) the rest of it after our grandson smashed and ate. I ordered my birthday cake from Crystal. Wow! She is a genius and the best baker around. It was a really special birthday and I wanted a special cake for the occasion. Best cake I've ever had. Dark chocolate with dark chocolate ganache filling with raspberries and a chocolate whipped cream frosting. I know it sounds like it would be too sweet but it was perfect. Light and delicious. Sweet Masterpiece is a rather unique little shop. I could tell you some secrets but why? It's much better coming from the owner who is very enthusiastic, friendly and informative. Maybe a better name would be Secret Sweet Masterpiece. One hint, they are expanding. On to the goods. The space is cozy and very inviting. You are hit instantly by the variety of sweet goodies. This is not a specifically cookie, doughnut or truffle shop. This is a plethora of small sweet unique bites. Throughout our memorable experience and even some of the goodies we took home (amazing brownies btw) was his undeniably memorable macaroons. One of my all time favorites but also one I avoid from mainstream shops. Macaroons are best truly homemade. They were sitting on the counter, maybe just pulled and yet to be placed in a case. I eyed them dreaming of better days. He offered one to try, no charge, just to taste as one does with food that they love. His secret? No flour. Macaroons shouldn't have them anyway but you'd be surprised how many do. His other secret? I don't know, that's for him to know and me to try to figure out. These were golden brown around the edges and on the bottom, crisp and chewy, sweet but not too sweet and above all, buttery. I mean brown butter buttery. It was the best macaroon I have ever tasted (aside of my grandmother's mind you). Sweet Masterpiece is a sweet shop in our sweet city and should be a part of your trip down our mainstreet. I sort of dropped the ball, so panicked and with no time to spare, I called, and wow, did they come through for me. The cake was totally custom made and decorated. My daughter graduated in Japanese yesterday and the cake was the pièce de résistance . The decorations included the Japanese kanji for congratulations and the koi fish for good luck. The colors were burgundy and gold (her University). The chocolate cake was to die for, but the stand out was the buttercream frosting! I've never liked frosting and usually scrape it off, but this was REAL butter and so good! Indescribable Yes, expensive, but worth every penny. My girl friend and I went to Sweet Masterpiece hoping to get a small cake for her birthday celebration. We did not know that we would end getting so much more than just the cake. Crystal and Derick are the sweetest cake makers I have ever come across. Their personalities definitely suit their line of business. Crystal was very patient in explaining us the various options that we had and also helped my girlfriend decide on the most custom made cake one could ever imagine. The size, flavor, type of icing, bread to cream ratio, gluten-free or not, etc was all decided on the spot. I loved her honesty when she recommended us a different cake than what we had originally selected just because it did not go with our description.It took her 20 minutes to finish the cake and it looked fabulous. As for Derick, I have nothing but praises for that guy. What a gentleman!! I was carrying a birthday balloon for 3 days for the cake cutting ceremony and unfortunately, the balloon flew off due to the loose knot that I had tied. (Super clumsy of me there). Derick offered the balloons he had in his shop and set up the table outside his shop with the balloon, plates and cake and complimentary candle. He said and I quote,"We are the type of people to whom if you say, you need something, we will try to do whatever we can to help." He acted exactly as he said. This falls into the category of places I want to love, but I'm not there yet. The owners moved to this historic storefront in downtown Oregon City from the Pearl District in Portland. They say it is a "soft open," but that has been going on for weeks/ months, not days, so I'm not sure how long it will take to offer their full range of products. According to their website, they plan to serve chocolates, desserts, pastries, bakery products, gourmet goods, grab-n-go food items, locally roasted coffee, hot chocolates, and organic teas. The current location is problematic and I don't know if it is temporary or their permanent space. Longtime residents will remember (fondly or not) that Muno's Bakery was here for 70 years. And it doesn't appear that much updating has taken place since Sweet Masterpiece took over the space. [1] Aside from the physical space, the location is also problematic since most of the renovation and new business activity in downtown Oregon City has taken place on the other side of Main Street, so there is less foot traffic here. Combine that with minimal signage and advertising and right now it is a bit of secret. Most customers wouldn't visit unless they make a special trip. I feel like I've focused on the negative, but my personal experience has been a bit lacking once I step in doors as well. In part, I think I've visited at the wrong time. My first visit was just after a rush caused by an Oregon City event, so they were "cleaned out" of most items. And my other visit was late in the day with a similar result. My third visit had me waiting in the store for five minutes and no one ever arrived to take my order. So I need to find the right time to fully appreciate and enjoy their wares. As part of the grand opening, I also wonder if they plan to renovate or expand their indoor space. Right now it is essentially a counter business with two small tables inside, and not a place where you would stay and drink or eat. There is more seating on the sidewalk when the weather cooperates. It would be lovely if it became a full blown cafe. All of these challenges are balanced by warm and personal interactions with the owners, which really has me pulling for them. She created a gorgeous mini custom Vegan beautiful birthday cake for my son's girlfriend with the size, design & flavor I wanted for a great deal. I called EVERY PLACE near Happy Valley and they only large cake minimum, or just did not offer what I needed. They all wanted costly delivery from $25- $75! That's crazy! Sweet Masterpiece charged me only $8 for a 15 minute delivery. That is crazy too! lol. We talked about what I wanted to do and she made it happen. I know she went above and beyond because I know the prices of these cakes. My son's girl was surprised and it really made my day too because I miss my son more than words can tell as he tries to deal with living on his own 1000s of miles away from mom. Crystal had vegan and gluten free white cupcakes prepared, and let us completely customize the toppings to whatever we wanted. We did 3 with vanilla buttercream frosting, vegan caramel, and toasted coconut. Another 3 with chocolate frosting and raspberries. We got many things, but of the cheesecakes we bought, they suggested additional toppings like hazelnut and cinnamon and we were just over the moon with the entire experience.
