[COVID takeout review] Overall: My overhyped expectations unfortunately weren't met, but I could've just picked the wrong pie. The good: Pickup was a breeze, even on the (likely) busiest day of the year (the day before Thanksgiving). They have two lines for online vs. phone orders, which is helpful given that there were plenty of people waiting (especially during COVID times). The staff was friendly and efficient and the packaging for the pie was perfect. The not-so-good: The filling of the apple streusel pie was underwhelming. There was plenty of apple inside but not a lot of mixture or filling otherwise. I love apples, but if I'm gonna eat a pie I want to have some sugary filling to go along with it! I was recommended to try the double doozie by MULTIPLE people so I was set on trying this yummy thing--brownie with chocolate chip cookie and cookie dough. What a delightful concoction! I even called in the morning to ask if they would have it. They told me they'd definitely have it by 2pm! We carefully planned out our day so we could have a taste of the "best dessert in town". We got there around 2:40. The interior was beautiful--cute place to take photos and get you in the mood for dessert! It was also pretty well kept. Went to order and asked for a double doozie. The staff member said she'll check...after 3-5 minutes of anxiously waiting...was told they didn't have them...but she could make us one. WAS SUPER EXCITED. This was my first time there but I had been wanting to try for quite awhile. I walked into the bakery and noticed a ton of employees behind the counter. A few were on the phone but others were just laughing to each other. No one said hello, or even acknowledged I had walked in. There was a line of mom's with strollers and kids so I'm assuming after school (around 2pm) is prime time? We jumped in line and basically what you see in the glass window is what you get. The cafe is really cute with its pastels color and adorable wall decorations. This place sells simple but delicious treats. We got a yellow cupcake with chocolate buttercream and it was amazing how such a simple treat tasted so well. The buttercream was the perfect sweetness and had a smooth texture (they even sell jars of this stuff!) while the yellow cake bottom wasn't too dry and tasted like pound cake. I was doing so good with not eating sugar too. Flew into Chicago last week and met my husband here, who came early for a business trip. His coworker (who lives locally) took him to Sweet Mandy B's, saying that it's a favorite of his mom's. He recommended the peanut butter rice krispy treats, but they were out the day they visited. So my husband got a chocolate mousse cake slice and a flourless chocolate cake. Well, when I arrived, there was half of the flourless chocolate cake in the fridge. I took a bite and oh my goodness, it was fabulous. Definitely rich and decadent but not overly sweet as some cakes can be. Nursed the cake for the next couple of days (trying not to appear like a pig and eat it too quickly). Husband wanted to take me there so we went last night. Cute little place. A lot of temptations. We pretty much bought everything that looked good. The red velvet cupcake was great; cream cheese frosting was spot on, though it was a little sweet and gave me a bit of a sugar headache afterwards. Lemon cheesecake was great. Husband devoured the chocolate mousse cake the first night (I thought it tasted way too sweet). Flourless chocolate cake is probably my favorite here. Five of us stopped by Sweet Mandy B's for coffee and dessert. After making our purchase we sat down in the restaurant area and was blown away by the horrible stench. After complaining we were told by one of the staff that they just cleaned the grease traps. Up to this point I didn't know anything about a grease trap. Evidently...cleaning a grease trap creates a disgusting and overwhelming combined scent of fecal matter, rotting food, and vomit. I don't know why anyone would think that it is a good idea to clean one during business hours. Especially when it is very cold outside and there is no cross ventilation to ease the nauseating smell. We purchased a molasses cookie, cupcakes, 7 layer bar, toffee pudding cake and coffee. Since we were visiting from out of town and this was our last meet up we tried to get past the smell. I've always loved Sweet Mandy Bs but more recently I've chosen to pick up my treats at the Streeterville location (even though it's much further out of the way) because the service at the Lincoln Park location is so unfriendly! The whole vibe of the bakery is less warm and pleasant than it was years ago when I worked at DePaul and would pop in on a work day. The frosted sugar cookie will forever hold a special place in my heart but unfortunately, I got the wrong salesperson and that changed the sugar cookie experience altogether. I made an order for pick up an hour and a half early for pick up (prepaid) and had to wait in line behind like 6 people. I don't like that when you order ahead of time and you pay the handling fee and you tip that when you arrive to pick up your order on time exactly an hour or so after you've ordered it you still have to wait in line behind everybody who still deciding what they want and asking a lot of questions. This is really irritating. So a pie is supposed to be $30 and I paid $45 because of the handling fee and I tipped the highest button and then I had to wait in line for about a half an hour. Stopped in here with some girlfriends on a Sunday afternoon - short line of 5 to 8 ppl that moved quickly. Cupcakes- not worth it. I tried the double chocolate and red velvet cupcakes and the icing was too sweet and the cake batter too dry.
