Visited Sweet Basils for dinner tonight. There were two other tables occupied, so it wasn't busy. Service was not good. We asked for tea when we arrived, we ended up having to ask again after the food was brought out. We had to ask for silverware, which was not provided at the table. The waitress didn't come check on us to see how the food was or refill beverages. The only time she came to the table was to take the order, deliver food and drop off the bill. As for the food, they have a broad menu with many options. I ordered the cashew chicken. Lots of veggies and some chicken, it was ok. Located in a strip mall in Brooklyn Park, off of 610. My second time giving this place a try. Overall good experience both times. Service is friendly. They serve some Thai, some Vietnamese, and some Chinese. I prefer a place that can pick a lane rather than try to accommodate 2+ types of cuisines. The place has about 15 or so tables. Both times I came for lunch and they have a $13.95 lunch special with choice of white or fried rice and then fried wontons or egg roll. Overall, flavor profile is sweet. They also use a lot of fish sauce. I ordered the spicy chicken Thai stir fry and egg roll. Egg roll is crispy and a little on the thinner side. The stir fry was ok. My friend ordered the lunch special chicken curry which she said that she liked. This place was busy with office groups out for lunch and a few other diners. Sure it's in a strip mall between a liquor store and a gas station, but who cares when the Meekong Curry is this good?! We love the fresh spring rolls, the green papaya salad, the Sweet Basil noodles, stir fry and curries. Service is always friendly, and the space is clean and bright. read more

Now when sweet basil opened. This was my favorite Thai restaurant. Recently, the last few times I've went it seems they lost their touch. I don't know if new cooks or new recipes but it doesn't have the same flair and taste I remember. The servers are still friendly and attentive. I do miss the old servers though. Great Service. Small brick & mortar location yet they have dressed up the interior with nice white linen table clothes. The entry and aisle leading into the eating area could use some frequent cleaning especially in winter months. Made a delivery order for two things and had polar opposite opinions on them. First was the Pad Thai with beef, pork, and chicken. I had several issues with this dish. I really wish I'd just gotten it with only chicken - the beef was pretty bland but the pork was just awful. It was chopped up bits of bbq pork like you might find in a Chinese pork fried rice, but which was not what I was expecting a pad thai dish. What was really unappetizing was that half the bbq pork was just inedible bits of fat that had to be spit out. As for the dish itself there was way too much fish sauce, almost no bean sprouts, and oddly it came with a lemon wedge instead of a more traditional and better tasting lime. This was not something I enjoyed and I would not order it again. For flavor I'd give this thing a 2 or 3, but dropped down to a 1 given that it had inedible blobs of unrendered fat that had to be spit out while eating. Which left me very shocked to find how delicious the egg rolls were. Wonderfully crispy on the outside, very well seasoned and flavorful in the middle with ground pork and a mix of veggies. 5 stars for these, and the only reason this review is getting 3 stars on average. I would go back here just to get egg rolls, but given how little I enjoyed the Pad Thai I'm not sure I trust spending money on trying anything else at this point. read more

We were searching for egg rolls yesterday (a Monday) and found most of our favorites were closed. Luckily, Sweet Basil was open with a menu full of variety. My friend ordered the Laab and we both agreed it was too jam-packed with herbs. Fresh herbs are fantastic, but when the overall texture becomes gritty and grainy, it's gone too far. The fried rice in our lunch special was basically rice with a couple bits of scrambled eggs, no added veggies or even onions. Blah. The sesame chicken was fried a bit too much. The nice thing is that it wasn't greasy, but it was highly crunchy with almost no breading. We also chose egg rolls, since this is what we were really craving, and this is why my review is 3 stars rather than 1. These egg rolls were AMAZING! The shell was crisp, but not great. The filling was smooth and flavorful. The dipping sauce really made the whole thing come together. We also ordered dumplings, and sadly they were too soggy. The black bean sauce for the Szechuan dumplings was interesting, but it couldn't make up for the gummy shell of the dumpling. I doubt we will return for a full meal, despite the convenience of the hours and location. But, for an egg roll craving, it will be just right. read more

My wife and I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. Keep in mind, we just got into a fight so you KNOW she's not going to compliment a single decision I'm about to make. We had Chicken Fried Rice, Ka Poon, and split eggrolls with our toddler. The food itself was nothing to write home about, it served it's purpose and we'll return if we're in the area. The reason why I gave this place 4 stars instead of 3 was because the staff was super nice and friendly and their tables were used to occupy our toddler. This review is solely on the appetizers. Came in today with my three little cousins and we decided to eat a bunch of appetizers together. Cream cheese rolls 4/5. Man these were good. The shape was so odd too lol. I've always seen them done it in triangles or wonton but for it to be rolled up that way, that's pretty innovative lol Chicken wings 4/5. Crispy and delicious. I wasn't a fan of the sauce though. Spring rolls 3.5/5. They knew how I liked my spring rolls... thiccc lol but honestly the taste fell a bit short for me. It was too dry. Egg rolls 3.5/5. Portion was good a little pricey since there was no rice with it very healthy spice amount as requested and the amount of lettuce and cucumbers was good to help cut the heat. Went in tonight at 8:16 pm, restaurant doesn't close until 9pm, it was completely empty. Was told they weren't allowing anymore dine in customers. Same employee turned away a group of 6 that came in right behind us too. When asked why, she said the kitchen was already closing down and in the process of cleaning, but we could order take out. That doesn't make sense if they can't cook for dine in, but can for take out? It's nice to see a restaurant doing so well after Covid shut down to be able to turn away customers. We've been fairly regular customers for the last 4 years, but customer service at night has gone down hill. We will not be going back. read more

Wow, one of our favorites and we'd be there more often if we lived closer. I've had a really tough time finding jungle curry in the twin cities. Sweet Basil has it and it is A-MAZING! We chose tofu as the protein and it was perfectly crispy and soaked up the amazing flavor of the curry. The spicy peanut sauce is equally good. Tried that with the chicken. Made with lots of fresh vegetables that were not overcooked. Curry flavoring also amazing. Lastly, we tried the beef pad thai. Beef had a lovely grilled flavor and the sauce was too heavy. Terrible! Not fresh and they mixed up the spice level so my pad Thai was SO spicy I couldn't even eat it and my husbands curry wasn't as spicy as he'd have liked. The appetizer sampler was a click above inedible. And the final kicker it was very expensive for what it was. read more

WARNING, Chinese food in Brooklyn Park / Maple Grove can be big time hit or miss! That said, this place was a major hit! Lunch visit on a friday, why not. Read some good reviews on my favorite spot, YELP of course and figured to give it a try. Good website to look over the menu and Fridays thay have Pot-stickers for half price, score. The food here is Asian Fusion and is spot on. I did a pick up order for the office so I got to see in the inside and not just experience it from my desk. The restaurant is nice and clean and very comfortable. I waited a little while but that turned out to be OK because I will never bitch about waiting for good food! The pot-sticker are fantastic, soft and tender with lots of flavor! The egg-roll was very good and the curried chicken dish I had was smoking good! Great flavor in the curry, hot just like I wanted it and fresh veggies with a snap to them! I would even consider coming here in the evening, it's that good. This place is great! I've only had egg rolls this good at one other place. Besides that, everything here is as good as I've had anywhere. The waitresses are extremely awesome and the food is insanely good. If you're a pad thai enthusiast, come on Saturday, it's only 7 bucks and you'll never finish it, you will easily get 2 meals for a small price. It's really nice to have someplace that can actually add some heat to their food. I usually order 4 and it's pretty spicy! Sure they don't serve liquor here but that's just fine, there's a liquor store right next door. Here's an extra note - the menu only states that you can order up to 5 stars for heat, but you can ask for even hotter 6-10 if you want. I personally don't know who could stand much more than 5, but it's a cool option to have if you're picking up lunch for a buddy or something.
