When I moved to town I was sad to say goodbye to my mechanics in L.A., whom I absolutely adored. I wanted to find someone like that in Phoenix and I believe I have. Steve and Johnny were both extremely friendly, competent and absolutely transparent about repairs and how my car works. Instead of taking my car to Arrowhead Volvo, who quoted me over $1,000 for a timing belt replacement, I took it to Swedish Auto Werks where I saved about 30% on the very same repair. Not only that, Steve gave me a list of items that still might be covered under my Volvo warranty and encouraged me to get *those* items taken care of at the dealer while my warranty was still in effect. Who does that? Swedish Auto Werks, that's who. I'll be coming back here for all of my repair needs from now on. Finding a mechanic you can trust is SO important. Steve used to work as a Service Manager at the big dealership and knows how they operate. (Did you know the dealer service reps are on commission? I didn't til Steve told me.) He also knows Volvos. When my Saab started acting up on the way home from Vegas, I started thinking, thank god I didn't lose to much in Vegas, because this is going to be expensive. So I prepared to pay through the nose thinking I was going to have to drop it off at the dealership, but I did a quick search on Yelp and found these guys. My car and my wallet are better for it. To say these guys are honest and helpful is an understatement. The problem my car had was a tricky one and tough to diagnose, these guys worked on it way more than what they charge me in labor. They had a sense of ownership that drove them to find the issue and didn't try to sell me any BS flushes or additives. They definately went above and beyond. You don't find that too often in a repair shop, which is what sets these guys apart from the rest. If you own a Saab or Volvo, this is where you should take your car for routine maintenance and repair, hands down. read more

I have a 2002 Volvo S60 that had an oil leak. I brought it in to have them diagnose the issue and they looked over the entire car from top to bottom with the most accurate and honest assessment of the car. The staff there is very friendly and understanding of your situation. The price to get the assessment was very fair. He explained all of the issues in full detail with a most to least urgent list. He also mentioned the mechanics of each piece what the fault of one item does to the rest of the system. There are a lot of auto shops out there and it's hard to pick one that you think will be honest and fair. I will undoubtedly go here any time my Volvo needs work. read more

I would avoid this shop, it is not an ethical or reasonable place. Maybe once it was good for saabs but no longer. It has new ownership and when I stopped by I wanted to run out shouting help! I just took my car to my regular Saab shop in Michigan for an oil change and to prepare for the long drive back to Phoenix. I mentioned that I'd had some work done on my car while I was in Phoenix, and showed the receipt to my mechanic. I learned that a part that Swedish Auto Werks charged me $450 dollars for would have cost me $60 in Michigan. Additionally, they replaced hoses that my mechanic said generally do not wear out on Saabs. And he said I was charged twice the hours of labor that he would charge for the same job. To be clear, I think Swedish Auto Werks did good work. They were nice, did the work in a timely manner, even provided me with a free rental car for the day. I was hoping that Swedish Auto Werks was going to be my trusted Phoenix-area mechanic. I might still do oil changes or small jobs there, but I can no longer trust them to give fair prices on parts and labor. I'm not sure if they saw my out-of-town plates and decided to overcharge, or if they do this to everyone. Caveat emptor. If they give you an estimate that seems dear, do some research and make sure it's fair. read more

Here used to be better. But at some point the main technician (the older guy in the picture before they cropped him out) stopped working here and Steve became the main technician. Steve is a really good guy and knowledgeable mechanic. Also he would answer your questions on the phone. But the other crew I saw kept on changing and I cannot really trust a place which keeps on changing its technicians. Besides that the main problems I see with this place is their pricing and "diagnosis fee". If you know exactly what needs to be done, they will give you a quote but that'll be typically higher than average if you shop around for a little. However if you don't know exactly the problem and you want them to check it, they immediately charge you about $100 diagnosis fee. I understand diagnosis fee for complicated things, when you need to remove parts from the car or test it for a long period of time. But most of the time you'll end up spending one hour labor's worth of money for something which can be figured out in tops 5-10 minutes. And most of the shops typically would check your car and give you a quote for free anyways. Basically here would charge you $100 just to see your car and tell you what the problem is without doing any work on it. They also exclusively use genuine parts, which might be a good or bad thing depending on how much you wanna spend on parts. Since you can get OEM parts usually for far less cheaper. Their waiting area is clean and they have free internet and coffee, which is nice while waiting. They also have one loan car that you can get if you schedule quite a bit ahead of time. I think their work is good (assuming Steve worked on the car, I am not sure about other crew) but it's overpriced and you need to know exactly what needs to be done to avoid spending $100 on the diagnosis fee. read more

I bought a 2009 Volvo in October last year. I have taken it to Steve at Swedish Auto Werks for 2 issues. A sunroof issue (broken motor) and a frozen lug bolt. He has taken care of me both times. The first time I took it to him for the sunroof, he had to order the motor for the sunroof. He asked if I wanted to prepay for the motor and installation or I could wait until I brought it back. Normally, I would have opted for the latter, but I decided to pay in advance that day. It took a little longer than expected to get the part, but once it came in he got me in and installed the sunroof motor. It took them longer than the 2 labor hours I was charged for, but he did not charge me anything additional. Second visit was for the frozen lug bolt. He ordered the new hub as we thought the lug bolt would break and we would need a new hub ($240 part and 2 hours of labor). Texted to let me know Car was ready, when I arrived he said he was able to get the lug bolt out and re-tap the the hub and use a new lugbolt. So I didn't have to pay for a new hub that he had ordered and only pay for the labor and lug bolt. That's an honest mechanic. If you have a Volvo or Saab, this should be your new mechanic! read more

I recently went to Swedish cause of the 2 reviews I read .Initially I went there to have them replace my struts which a foreign car service in Tucson had told me would run me $400 to replace. Before we ever got to the struts they had me down for $900 of other repairs which I agreed to have them do including $100 to repair my front bumper which was sticking out; my front bumper is still sticking out after the $100 Swedish Auto Werks charge . When I called the owner to tell him that he told me it was because the sheet metal underneath was bent and he would undo the work he did and give me a refund. Why do it in the first place if you can't fix it right? I had another shop in Tucson, also a foreign car repair service replace my $1000 swedish werk struts these guys wanted $1000 for for $400. Total cost to me was $400 including parts vs the $1000 the owner of Swedish Werks told me he would charge me to replace them. Save yourself the money with these guys. You can stay at a very nice hotel like I did and maybe save $500 like I did on my struts by not having these crooks work on your car. my experience calls into question the other repairs these guys did on my car The Swedish Werks owner told me he tells customers they can count on a $1000 bill if they bring their car to him. He is right. They can. I stayed a La Quinta Suites in Tucson for one night and left with brand new struts on my car and still saved $500 by not agreeing to have these guys do more of their thing on me. read more

Steve is honest, trustworthy and has made my car run better than it ever has; his estimates, more often than not, have been a touch under the final cost; how amazing is that? Steve has gone above and beyond in terms of thoroughness, quality of workmanship, explaining in detail every issue and researching options that cost less money. I have finally realized, after years of using mechanics who do not specialize in Volvos, that it is essential to use one who is specifically certified to repair Volvos. On my first visit I happened to strike up a conversation with another customer who has owned her Volvo for 14 years and has been going to Swedish Autowerks for that entire period of time and would not go anywhere else. I cannot say enough good things about them. Finally, and this is just an added bonus, they have a deal with Enterprise car rentals where you can get a car for approx. $26/day; they will pick you up at the shop and return you to the shop when your vehicle is ready. read more

Needed a headlight connection for my Saab 2008 9-5 quickly (due to no drivers side low beam). An on line Saab shop wanted me to buy an entire wire headlight harness connection for the "simple" fix for $400 +. Steve, Jim and Ken not only had the replacement part but took me in promptly and did the job professionally and correctly. In addition, they placed car on rack and assisted me in finding another culprit of why my car was leaking a few drops of oil during the night. Definitely good to have knowledgeable Saab mechanics in the Phoenix area. It's extremely hard to find mechanics who will even look at or alone work on Saabs now a days. $150 blanket diagnostic fee. They only charged $75 bc they said they couldn't read my custom software. It's funny bc I then took my car to a shop in the barrio. They read the generic codes on a simple OBDII reader (not a custom dealer level reader) and successfully diagnosed the issue (no charge), and fixed my car for less in labor than the Swedish place charges for a diagnostic fee. It's funny bc it was a Friday and they probably just wanted a quick buck and to get it off their hands. Saabs aren't really that hard to work on and don't require dealer level scan tools- just a competent mechanic. read more

I owned a Saab for a short period until I was in an accident. The first time visited the shop I spoke with Dave and he installed the Progressive Snapshot device because I couldn't figure it out. The second time I ended up having my car towed there because I locked myself out using the key to lock the car instead of the key fob and I turned it the wrong way or something. The third time I dealt with Dave was when I was in an accident and he sent a tow driver to pick up my car and didn't charge me the $100 from the SW side of Phoenix becuase he said I could tack it on to the bill for the insurance company. The other woman's insurance company decided to fight me on the charges because they found her not at fault even though it was her fault. My car sat in Swedish Auto Werk's parking lot for like 6 months and they didn't charge me a storage fee! Dave is awesome and I will continue going to him even though I now own a Japanese car. read more

First time in. Went to Swedish Auto Werks for an unknown problem with my 2008 SAAB. They ran the code and informed me of what it was. Steve was incredibly helpful in explaining what needed to happen and set me up an appointment for my next available time. Although it was a costly fix, they didn't try to nickel and dime me with fixes I didn't need. Car is running great and they even made some minor little fixes to some of the exterior plastics for me.
