This location is like a treasure trove; you really have to dig around to find a nice piece worth buying. It's all 50/50.

I've been a loyal customer of Marla's Fashions for around 4 years. In August 2023, my experience…read moretook a disappointing turn. If I could give the store 0 stars, I would. My sister's wedding is approaching, and I visited Marla's Fashions in early June 2023 to find a dress. I found a dress in a size 6 that was slightly too tight. I ordered sizes 8 and 10 in the dress. After 2 weeks, the 8 and 10 came and fit worse than the 6. We later learn the size 6-floor model was stretched out and the sales associates did not inform of us this at our initial point of purchase. Still liking the dress and with time to spare before the wedding, I ordered sizes 12 and 14 in July. The size 12 fit decently with alterations needed (tightening straps and making the zipper fall half a centimeter lower). I paid for alterations and they were supposed to be ready by early August. The company told us we should use their in-house seamstress as they are more familiar with the dresses. We trusted them. When I received the altered dress (in mid-August), it fit worse than before due to poor alterations. The seamstress lowered the zipper so much so that it looked like there was a gaping hole in the dress, the elasticity was removed and the straps were not tightened. The manager was unhelpful, blaming us for not managing time well. The manager said that most people need 2nd, 3rd, or 4th alterations... but if your seamstress was good, this would not have to be the case. As we did not pay for the dress to look this way and because the seamstress removed so much material that the dress was unwearable and unfixable, we asked for a refund. We even offered to buy a different dress of theirs in the store that day or pay to ship in a new size 12 to have it altered elsewhere (contingent upon a refund). Both options were denied. The manager stated that it is their policy that refunds cannot be issued (note: their website says absolutely nothing about refunds being issued if the seamstress botches the job). The manager remained rude and uncooperative. The manager took a break mid-conversation and later refused to continue the discussion claiming she has other, more important things to do. The bookkeeper was equally rude, emphasizing the (non-existent) store policy. Feeling mistreated, we left the store empty-handed, without a refund, and found a dress at Esti Boutique on Avenue Road. Esti's customer service is phenomenal, the dress selection is gorgeous and the atmosphere is stunning as well. I could not speak of them more highly. Marla's, on the other hand? Well after this experience, I won't support Marla's Fashions due to their poor treatment of customers. And if you want to pay for a butchered dress with a premium price tag, go to Marla's.

What an amazing experience at Fitzroy! I have a black tie wedding to go to in May and was hesitant…read moreto purchase a dress that I would only wear for one event so when I learnt about rental opportunities.. I jumped on it! There were so many dress options for me as someone who is ~5'7 - I had such a fun time looking through all the colours available. As soon as you walk in, you're able to explore the options and the service was amazing. I had flagged down Nicole and she was so incredibly helpful throughout the process, finding dresses that fit the style I was looking for and helping hunt down my size. I was so lucky to find one I loved and confirm it was available for the date I need! With the shipping and total price of the dress - it was such a deal, especially when I know I wouldn't wear it again after one event. Excited to get my dress in May and I'll be updating my review as soon as it arrives!

They moved to a new location with much bigger space and the place looks so good! Upon entering the place it looks beautiful with the aesthetic and the entrance. My sister rents dresses from here for her special occasions and the process is quite simple. You choose the date in which you want to hold the dress for and pick it up. They're completely transparent about any damages or stains on the dresses if someone who booked the dress previously have stained it or damaged it which is nice and good to know. Will definitely be renting dresses from here :)

It's a funny business model, since the in-house stuff generally copies the premium-branded stock, and sells for much less. The corollary is that you get what you pay for. In S&M's case, this often seems to mean poor quality, defect-ridden, off-sized slippers or sandals or snowboots. To make things more confusing, they carry limited runs of the expensive stuff, so they rarely have my size. And while they frequently advertise "sales", pricing rarely dips below those of its competitors, including mid-range department stores and specialty brands. Bright, colourful tags notwithstanding, you're just as likely to get those sweet low top cons at little burgundy or journeys for less. Service depends entirely on who's helping you. A trip to purchase, then exchange, then return a pair of ladies' Sorels for a lady who wears Sorels resulted in conflicting information coming from at least three employees, including a manager who got it wrong. The nicest person I dealt with was the person who finally refunded my money--she was also the only one who advised that Sorels come in several different lasts, so I didn't pick the wrong boots so much as I was only shown the wrong collection. Gah! Thankfully, my SO prefers her UGGS from a different store. I spare this location from a 1-2 star rating because it's Friday afternoon, and I did come across some decent customer service (even if it was too little too late to save a purchase) and because if you catch the right person at the right time, you can stack any professional or student discounts you may have on top of the already mediocre pricing. Maybe it's not a lot, but I'll put up with indifferent service and vaguely shady merchandising to save a few bucks. At S&M, "Value" is my safe word.
