Vintage black cake with red writing.
Kimberly R.

I ordered a vintage black, red velvet cake for my friend's wedding. Not only did it taste amazing and the cake was not dry at all... BUT IT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL WE DIDN'T EVEN WANT GO SLICE IT!! Thank you all staff in San Carlos for helping me with this cake! It was so beautiful, and I followed the directions to a T!!

We have been to several Susiecakes locations including San Jose, Menlo Park, and today the San Carlos location. They have a lot of yummy cakes, cookies and cupcakes. We usually get a slice of either the carrot cake, coconut cake, or lemon cake. We've also had some of their cupcakes. All are delicious but we really like the coconut cake. You can also purchase an entire cake but we find their slices are very generous and good enough for 2 people to share. Ambiance - more of a takeout place than eat in Service - excellent

Susie cakes is a spot in the downtown area of San Carlos, not really a sit in and eat type place but they do have lots of baked goods on display and would be great for bringing to a party since they look great and easy for a snack. Cupcakes have just the good amount of frosting and the cake itself is very moist and fluffy. I like that it is not very dense but might be a little too light for the frosting but who knows, My kid just eats the frosting and doesn't eat the cake part. They decorate based on the season but I really like the strawberry cupcake. They must mix in fresh strawberry into the frosting or have a really good flavoring as it is fresh and very light. The red velvet has a good cream cheese frosting and the standard chocolate and vanilla ones are less sugary than the grocery chains. The staff there is usually very friendly and will help answer questions as needed. Overall good spot if you need a quick sugar rush or need to get something for a party.

We ordered chocolate chip cookie, peanut butter cookie, snickerdoodle cookie and flourless cupcake. Everything was yummy. It got super busy after lunch. Guess everyone was craving sweets! Service was quick and friendly.

I stop for a treat from here every time I am in town. This months special flavor is cranberry orange, and I had too high of hopes for it. While it was good enough to eat, it was not my favorite and I wouldn't order it again. No worries though because I got a backup red velvet so no love lost!

SusieCakes is the only place where I can truly enjoy cupcakes. I tried all different flavors for my birthday, and every single one was amazing. The service is always welcoming, and the ambiance has the feel of a modern, bright bakery that makes the experience even better. Already excited for their fall banana cake. I just need to come up with an occasion to get it.

Very nice place for baked goods! The interior and many of the products are all quite colorful which lends itself to a super fun vibe as soon as you enter the store. A peanut butter cookie + peanut butter buttercream sandwich caught my eye as I walked in and I'm happy to report that it was quite tasty overall with actual real peanuts and no artificial flavorings. I think it could have been even less sweet to let the nutty flavors shine even more, but overall, wasn't face-scrunchingly sweet like many of the American bakeries out there. Saw a fun pineapple coconut cake that I want to try next time!

Old-Fashioned 6-Layer Chocolate Cake

Favorite chocolate cake of all time! This is my favorite place to get their famous 6 layer old fashioned chocolate cake slice. I've been going here since I discovered them almost 7 years ago! Parking is usually easy to find, the interior is clean and all things pastel, service is quick.

This is a small, clean cake shop. I was there to order a birthday cake. Their old fashioned chocolate was a hit with the kid. I also got a slice of their carrot cake and tropical coconut cake. I liked those flavors, but my kid didn't like it anywhere close to the old fashioned chocolate. Old fashioned chocolate is their top flavor for a reason.

Susie cakes is one of my favorite bakeries for specialty cakes. Quality wise it is definitely a step up. My go to is the carrot cake and in my opinion it's worth it to pay that extra money for the quality. It's a perfect amount of balance between sweetness, nuts, and carrots and cream cheese that balances perfectly. When I want a little sweet treat I normally get a slice of cake, but have sometimes ordered a whole cake for special occasions and celebrations. I wish there was more locations in the Southbay and it's located in the downtown area so parking could be tough. Workers are always pretty friendly here and Try to work as quickly as possible to package everything up, But if there is a line be patient.

Flourless Chocolate and vanilla

Very friendly and attentive staff. The store is clean and bright. Love the presentation of the cakes and cupcakes. The flourless chocolate cupcake is best heated up in my opinion otherwise it's a bit dry and stiff, but warmed up it's lovely. The vanilla cupcake is a bit tougher than I'd like as well. I'd like to try their regular chocolate next time.

It was my first time visiting. The place is so stunning when you walk in! ORDER We got a slice of candy cane chocolate cake, mocha cupcake and chocolate chip cookie. STARS (stand out qualities) -Location is easy to get to by car or public transportation -Store is clean and beautiful -Staff are friendly and helpful -All desserts we tried were good quality but too sweet for me (especially cake and cupcake) -Mocha cupcake has a strong mocha flavor in the frosting -Candy cane cake has nice peppermint jam in between slices -Cookie was nice and crispy. I personally like chewier cookies STAIRS (areas of growth) -If possible, reduce the sweetness but maybe some customers like it sweeter. Maybe offer less sweet options TIPS -There is free street parking available -If you download and sign up for app, you can get a free slice of cake on your birthday at!

Tropical Coconut Cake for my birthday!

SusieCakes has slowly but surely become one of my favorite, if not THE favorite, cake chains in California. Prior to my whole cake experience with Susie I was a bit of a red velvet skeptic, and since my first slice from this location I have been a changed man. The red velvet at SusieCakes is legendary, with the perfect amount of present but not dominant cocoa and ample sweet, tangy cream cheese frosting. If you are also a red velvet doubter I suggest a slice from Susie to re-assess your stance on the velvet. I have had a number of things from this location, and a couple others, and I'm always satisfied. Whole cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and bars are all delicious, but the whole cake is where this shop really shines. Between me and my partners birthdays over the last three years I have had almost all of their full cake offerings, and my top three recommended are the Red Velvet at the top, then Marble (so fantastic with its crunchy chocolate chips and dual frosting), and then the lemon. I find their cookies to be a bit thin for my personal preference but their whoopie pies, especially the peanut butter one, is absolutely bonkers. The customer service at San Carlos is top notch, and I've always been greeted warmly and left with instructions on how to store and enjoy my baked goods without asking. I also really love the SusieCakes app and rewards program, where you get a free slice for your birthday and earn rewards on every purchase. What can I say, I'm a bit of a Susie stan.

They have seasonal flavors, but none of them seemed appealing to me so I decided to go with the double chocolate and stracciatella in a cone. If you get a cone, you get the choice of dark or milk chocolate drizzle, and if you get a cup you get a little waffle chip dipped in chocolate to top your gelato. They also have various premade gelato pops and mini ice cream cones which are nice options. Of the two flavors I got, the double chocolate was my favorite! It was extremely rich and had a strong chocolate flavor. I got two flavors, but it seemed a bit uneven and I got more of the chocolate than stracciatella but I didn't mind. The drizzle of dark chocolate was a great addition, and love that it hardened and added some texture! It's a small store with a few indoor seats, but it gets crowded really quick. But definitely a great sweet treat after dinner!

The double chocolate was rich and delicious, but the rose lychee was lacking flavor. There was no taste of rose or the lychee and it just tasted like vanilla with a tint of pink dye. I really liked how the wafer dipped with chocolate (milk or dark option) was included with the gelato. It was a nice touch. I do wish the gelato flavors were more flavorful overall, especially since no sample tasting is allowed and choices had to be made based solely on appearance and description. The flavor selection also felt somewhat limited, with not many fruity options available, something that would be nice as summer heat is quickly approaching

My partner likes the BBQ one. I often get the Hawaiian one, sometimes the Sour Cow, or the Tuscan. The Big Belly is really big, with lots of ingredients. The crepes are usually served golden into triangles, which makes them easy to carry. No utensils needed. There's usually to less cheese than I'm used to from other locations, but it's not bad. Note: We usually get ours To Go. The apple caramel dessert crepe arrives cut up into squares, which was surprising. Normally the plain chocolate one we get isn't cut up. This resulted in a bit of a mess when my partner didn't hold the container flat me time. Service is so-so. Definitely order in advance if you can, or you may wait a bit. Ambiance is terrible indoors. Only a couple of small tables and more of a "pick up at the counter vibe." They have a nice outdoor seating area though, if the weather is good enough for it. Parking is usually decent if you park in the lot right next to the restaurant. It's sometimes easiest to enter that lot from Walnut, the street parallel to Laurel, though. You get to it from Olive, going around the back of Bianchini's. The outdoor seating areas and proximity to Bianchini's market make parking on Laurel a bit dicey. I tried the round waffle things once, and wasn't that impressed. Seemed a bit dry. Keep meaning to try the gelato but never have. And I don't drink boba tea, so I can't comment on that. They do stay open later than the other nearby boba place though, so if that's your cup of tea (ha!) then it's an option later in the evening. A solid place, if not the best crepes I've had.

If you know, you know. The pastries here are absolutely worth the detour--and honestly, wherever I see a Paris Baguette, I do pull over. That includes locations I've visited in Northern California, North Brunswick, New Jersey, Atlanta, Georgia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and even the one here in Charlotte down in Pineville. It's a bit of a drive for me, but when I'm in that area, I always make a point to stop in and pick up a couple of their delicious croissant-donut pastries and marzipan or almond croissants. That's the beauty of this bakery--it's a chain, yes, but the consistency is what keeps me coming back. I have yet to be disappointed. Of course, I had to stop at this Hilton Head location--and I didn't come empty-handed. Food connects people, and bringing pastries to your host is always a winning move. I picked up three different varieties of their famous croissant-donut style pastries (similar to the well-known cronut): * Chocolate * Tiramisu * Mango And I added two large almond croissants that were beautifully filled, flaky, and indulgent. Everything looked fresh, full, and irresistible. The setup inside is easy and efficient. It's self-serve: you grab a tray, line it with parchment, use the tongs, and select whatever catches your eye--from baguettes to cakes to coffee drinks. Checkout was quick, Apple Pay was accepted, and the whole experience felt smooth and well organized. The space was clean, friendly, and inviting, with plenty of outdoor seating. Bottom line: Whenever you see a Paris Baguette on your radar, pull over. It's dependable, delicious, and perfect for picking up pastries to share--or to treat yourself. For me, it's one of those rare places that delivers the same quality every single time, no matter the city--and that kind of consistency is something I truly appreciate as a traveler and lifelong foodie.
