My gf and I spent much time deciding what to have for dinner and came across Sushiya on Yelp. It was 9:15 at the time and they were closing at 10. I called to make sure their kitchen wasn't closed and went over there. By the time we got there, there was only 1 table of customers left. Unlike most places that frown upon late comers, we were greeted nicely. The food was fantastic. I had the large sashimi and my gf had the chicken and NY Strip teriyaki combo. We live around the corner and eat here at least every two weeks. The sushi is awesome and the seaweed salad is delicious. We've tried a lot of the rolls and they have a great selection of specialty ones and the regulars, and we always find something delicious. read more

I was curious about the wide variety of ratings for this place, especially when it came to service. We tried it and found the food wonderful but, as some have noted, the service was terrible. Sitting there and watching it happen, it became clear it all depends on who you get for your waiter/waitress. We were a party of four and came in on Friday night to find it pretty busy. Two other groups, two of two people and a third of three people, came in after us and had drinks and their orders in before we got any attention. They had the waiter and the shorter waitress while we had the tall waitress. She eventually came by and took drink and food orders but that took quite a while. She was nice enough but I think she was in over her head as she seemed to be working the grill side of the restaurant too. I am not sure who gets soup and salad but it looked like everybody but us got the miso soup and salad. I didn't bring it up because it was unclear and I didn't want to slow her down any more. I think we should have gotten it but I might be wrong. What really killed it for me was that what I suspected was our sushi was sitting up on the bar for a solid ten minutes before she noticed. She seemed surprised by its presence. Sure enough, she brought it over once she wandered over to the sushi bar to check on it. We had been there quite a while at that point. One of my daughters was finished eating already as the waitress brought out her yakisoba as her appetizer when it was really her main course. I suppose I should have clarified that. She did OK refilling drinks but we just sat and sat while the staff interacted with a lot of regulars, taking orders and bringing food promptly. That's the rub for me. Had it not been for us seeing good service happening around us, we might not have realized how bad ours was. We eventually had to ask the male waiter to bring our check as ours ceased to care or notice. The food was good. Really good actually and the price was not so bad given the quality. But, if I want to be ignored, I will sit my kid in front of a screen and try to talk to them. It won't feed me but it will be a lot cheaper. The quality of the food here is overshadowed by the poor service. I am tempted to try it again but only if I am seated in someone else's section. My parents ordered hibachi (which is not real hibachi) and received their food dead last, we waited over an hour for our food, water was never refilled, and we had to physically get up to ask other servers for assistance. First time here, visiting area and better than expected. Staff is friendly and welcoming. Sushi was best I've had in awhile. Miso and Tempura is best I've had since growing up. This tucked away place (previously SOYA) was closed for remodeling for most of the time that we've lived here. However they recently reopened last week so we got to check it out for the first time. Gotta say, we were pretty impressed. The sushi offerings were very true to any sushi restaurant you'd get in larger cities and not dumbed down for your average gaijin. Uni wasn't the greatest I've had, but the fact it was even available was surprising. Ama-Ebi was fantastic and the accompanying fried shrimp heads kept it real and delicious. Salmon pieces were buttery and fresh, on par with the best I've had anywhere. The William and Mary roll was great too, not the typical drenched in mayonnaise and sauce offerings, and again, impressive. The ambience is very Williamsburgy, meaning no modern geometric architecture with neo-zen mood lighting and douchey lounge beats in the background. Personally I could care less about that stuff, the food here is great. Coming from Austin where I roll my eyes every time a new trendy sushi joint opens up, it's refreshing to see a japanese restaurant that's more about the food than the vibe. We enjoyed the restaurant so much that I feel compelled to promote it. Its viability in a town like Williamsburg where the demographic consists of college students and retirees is cause for concern. Let's face it, the burg is no food mecca, and raw fish is the furthest you can get from pizza and pancakes. Even if you are less adventurous, I'd recommend you come here and try some yaki soba or tempura. Simply great asian food... which is rare around these parts. read more

Sushiya has just opened in the former Soya location. It's great to have another excellent sushi place in town. I went for lunch with my office staff. For starters we had the absolutely delicious soft shell crab appetizer (deep-fried soft shell crab and avocado with teriyaki sauce and spicy mayo) and the chef sent out a William & Mary roll and a Dynamite roll, both of which had really nice flavor (though the Dynamite could have been a little spicier for me). My sashimi plate was excellent, extremely fresh, and well-presented. Everyone at the table really enjoyed their meals, which included a teriyaki salmon bento, chicken ginger, and chicken fried rice. Our server was clearly new but very helpful and attentive, and the chef checked on our table and thanked us for coming in. Sushiya is a welcome addition to the local food scene. I'm already looking forward to my next visit & planning to sit at the sushi bar. read more

We called and asked if we could push our reservation back 30 minutes. They told us no problem. We got to the restaurant and no one had apparently communicated anything to each other. They acted like they weren't going to seat us because we were "late" and there was another reservation in 15 minutes. No one at the host station had any record of the change so they went around the restaurant and asked all the workers if they had spoken to us. Once they found the person that did, they decided to seat us. The ironic thing is the other reservation came in and got seated, and even with both of us being seated there was another hibachi station open the entire night. So I'm not sure what the problem was. The food is actually very good. Of all the hibachi places that I've been to, this was my favorite in terms of flavor. Our hibachi chef was friendly and put on a very entertaining show as well. My kids loved the show and they ate all of their food pretty quickly. However once we were seated, we didn't get offered refills the entire night until our check was brought. Also, it's not particularly clean. My son dropped his chopstick on the floor. I left it there at first and had him eat with his fork. When I went to pick it up there was a large black bug (beetle, not a roach) crawling on the chopstick. It scampered away and crawled under the wall behind the hibachi station. So, overall, the food is great but everything else leaves a bit to be desired. Not sure if I'll be back, which is a shame because the food was actually quite good. read more

What a disppointment. First of all, I guess, due to Covid, there was no Hibachi meals. They cooked in the litchen and brought to you. We might have been okay with this but we love to share our meals and take our time. The only good thing was the sushi, we order the Cruncy California Roll, very tasty quickly made. Unfortunately they threw everything on the table at once. very hard to have a chance at enjoying. They put a large plate of our Steak hibachi on the table that was tasteless, and dry. I don't think they cooked with any butter or salt. Usually when we go to a Japanese restaraunt and say we want to share, we are charged extra and given two soups, two salads and a divided entree. Not here. One soup, one salad and plate of entree. Unseasoned and very dry. A shame I did a lot of research before going and this was a huge disappointment. Sushiya is pretty much your choice for decent Japanese food in the area. Not to be damning with faint praise or anything - the food is pretty solid. The specialty rolls can be a bit over-wrought, especially the cooked ones, being overloaded with ingredients piled on top of ingredients. But the flavors seem fresh, the preparation is competent enough, and the staff are great. The menu is also surprisingly broad for both sushi, hibachi, and hot foods. I eat at Sushiya pretty regularly and find the food good (but slow service). Yesterday I got a large sushi plate to go and had to throw out three pieces. One piece tasted of mold, another had no taste and a third was tough and chewy. I realized that Sushiya must be not ordering sushi-grade fish, which is fine for cooked food but not raw fish. I am giving this place 2 stars only because it's during the pandemic, and I don't know what modification they had to make. However, I order a red dragon roll and 2 hibachi plates one chicken the other the lobster tail and steak. Both were burnt not seared but burnt it was awful the lobster was extremely tough and completely black on one side, the chicken was dry, the steak was the best part not because it was well cooked it just wasn't over cooked. The vegetables were charred on one side yet didn't feel like they were cooked all the way through. The noodles were hard and burnt. One plate's rice was edible where the other one was well you guessed it burnt and hard. The sushi was saggy and feel apart had to use a fork to eat it. Taste wasn't bad just wasn't great either. I don't like to write bad reviews but this place was so bad, which was a shame because it had been getting a lot of buzz recently. read more

This place is legit!!! I popped in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised with the prices and quality of my rolls. I had a spicy tuna and shrimp tempura and both were delicious! AND, this is coming from someone who just moved to the Burg from Hawaii. The fish was fresh ... and my lunch was made with love. Friendly vibe ... clean restaurant ... I will for sure be back!!!
