Went here a couple years back and just recently I went on a dinner date here with my man friend a couple months ago. Him being from the Burg I asked him to pick the best Japanese restarant in in town and he said this place was. Bless his poor little heart! He obviously doesn't eat out much. I know my Yelping doesn't reflect it but I've been to just about every Japanese place on the Peninsula. To say this is the best place is just kinda sad, it's not horrible but definitely nothing special. It's located next to a Farm Fresh on the intersection of 199 and John Tyler, thus there is lots of parking and I've really never seen it full. The inside is okay, it's not fancy but pretty clean. I'm not a fan of places having fish tanks because it looks kinda cheesy and it's a little disturning when your eating sashimi and staring into the face of a goldfish, lol. Anyway, the three times I've been we have alsways been attended to quite quick. The last time I went was for dinner and I ordered my usual Japanese fair of hot tea and sashimi. He ordered sushi...I believe it was a dragon roll. The hot tea is okay, I'm used to having it served in a pot but that's okay. The sashimi had a good selection of scallops, octopus, yellow fin, tuna and salmon. It was was a bit small despite being delux and I was still left with hunger. I ended up eating some of his sushi which he seemed to enjoy for the most part. When I went my sister she ordered their chirashi and did not appreciate the style of rice used since it wasn't sweet but instead mushy and bland. They do serve alcohol and beer, with a domestic, some imports and even a smaller selection of Asian brews. The wine list is okay nothing fancy nor abundant. Overall, the food is typical stuff you could find anywhere else. I'm pretty sure the people serving your food aren't Japanese but maybe the chefs are? I doubt it though. If I could say anything about the service is that they at least attended to you quickly but aren't the best at at least trying to strike up a conversation and make you feel all warm and fuzzy. I'm not in a rush to go back here as I have had better in the area as far as experience, food and the overall ambiance. read more

I visit this place for lunch every time I visit Williamsburg. When available, definitely try their uni shooter. It's fairly priced compared to other sushi places in the DMV area and it's nicely done. Their chicken fried rice is excellent. Sushi platter is fresh but they only include general cut of sushi such as salmon and tuna. Service is very friendly and accommodating. Overall it's a good sushi restaurant. Definitely give them a try if you visit Williamsburg. read more

Decided to try Sushiya and so glad we did! Excellent service, great food, and a good ambience. We ordered the sushi boat for two for two adults and one child and it was the perfect amount, in fact we almost couldn't finish it. All the fish was fresh and very high quality. Quality is average and portions are average and price is average. Service is prompt. Nothing stands out. Interior and lighting could use an update. Had the seaweed salad and a couple of rolls. I had the Strawberry roll which was good but doesn't need the mayo sauce on there. Other than that the roll I would definitely get again. Also had an Alaskan roll & the salmon was tasty. The seaweed salad comes with a bit of squid salad on the side which had great flavor and tastes great alongside the seaweed salad. Stopped in to get some carryout the young man that was working was so knowledgeable and so friendly I could have talked to him for hours. Ordered three different roles all tuna. They were huge and they tasted amazing. Prices are very reasonable they gave me plenty of ginger but I think next time I'd ask for extra soy sauce if you're getting carryout the containers were only filled half full the soy sauce. read more

Best sushi in Williamsburg! I was so sad when the previous establishment Soya closed here, but soon enough this sushi place moved in. Everything is pretty much the same. The sushi is still great, and the hibachi still tastes amazing. There is a great variety of sushi offered, and there are always special rolls available. The service is great here as well. Celiac/Gluten-Free Review: While the food is good and Sushiya has gluten-free soy sauce, the service is something left to be desired. Our first experience was takeout, and the order was perfect but my husband said he was poorly received. But now I have been in the restaurant twice, I felt this review needed an update because it's very rare in Williamsburg to find a restaurant with unfriendly staff. The first time dining in, the server was cold and distant the moment she took my order even though my husband ordered a pretty substantial dinner dish. We felt snubbed as if she expected us to order more than what we could eat and it took forever to get refills and order updates (when it was not busy at all). The second time was ordering takeout, and it was an equally cold and frustrating experience when they messed up our order and placed my husband's fish sushi in with my vegetarian maki rolls (even after explaining I also have a seafood allergy and everything needed to be in separate containers). I try to give all food establishments the benefit of the doubt-- possible bad days, busyness, etc, but three times the charm. We will be going to other warmer and friendlier sushi restaurants who are equally delicious but appreciate business and at least attempt hospitality to locals. read more

First night back in #Williamsburg with daughter and her family. The kids wanted #sushi so here we went. It's absolutely family friendly. We didn't get thrown out for bringing three unruly kids. There were three couples out to enjoy a quiet, romantic dinner. Sadly we disappointed them. The sushi is average, beer selection is marginal, but service was prompt and attentive. The place is clean and well-themed. Strongly recommend the management throw out the chipped plates and glasses -- quite unsightly, not to mention unsafe. Sushiya is in a strip mall. We've been back to Sushiya a couple of times and each experience has been better and better. It is clear that our first trip was an anomaly. The food is consistently good (better than you'd expect given the strip mall location). My wife and I have had: Sushi Boat: 5/5 Nabe Udon: 5/5 (dinner), 4/5 (lunch) Yakisoba: 4.5/5 White Tiger Roll: 5/5 Teriyaki: 4/5 (a little small on the portion of meat) Hibachi: 5/5 (great mix of items!) Best sushi I have had in a while. We had TNT roll, and rainbow roll with a twist. The inside was spicy tuna with chopped peppers. Delicious! We also shared the miso soup perfect for a cool fall day, a house salad and a seaweed salad. The seaweed salad is unique. I highly recommend! In addition this place has hibachi. Looked to Yelp to find a nicer place to eat to wind down a visit to Williamsburg, and Sushiya seemed to be the place for us. My family enjoys sushi and we frequent sushi restaurants often, so we decided to give Sushiya a try and we were pleasantly surprised. I ordered the Chef's special (pictured). This plate featured the best piece of salmon I've ever had, and my family had to order a few more pieces because the fish was so delicious. The staff was so friendly, I didn't feel rushed as I usually do at sushi places. The restaurant was clean and casual, will definitely go back when I'm in the area again! read more

We walked out after waiting over an hour for a dinner that was never served. It seems that the order slip was misplaced! The wait to place an order was long but the Sapporo was ice cold and the seaweed salad excellent. Obviously, we did not taste the sushi. The little bit of food we did have was given to us at no charge. We left and wound up having pizza for dinner. Although the wait staff was scurrying around a great deal, it was obvious that they had no system for serving the tables in an orderly manner. This place is a great hidden gem that I found by accident. I come to Williamsburg a lot for business reasons and I happened to stumble upon this place this past weekend before my trip back home to PA. I ordered the 3 for 35 special and my business partner ordered the ginger chicken. I have to say the 3 rolls my server picked out for me was just phenomenal and my business partner said his ginger chicken was delicious as well. All in all the food was amazing and the service was great. I will be returning to this place whenever I am back in Williamsburg, I highly recommend this place. read more

We just moved here from NYC, and were eager to find decent sushi in the area. This may be a "4" by Williamsburg standards, but I am settling on the "3" (and could have gone "2") for all the self-professed "sushi snobs" out there. There are not a lot of rolls-- which was a disappointment to my boyfriend, who primarily orders sushi (and is a fan of the "specialest" of special rolls!). I'm a sashimi girl, and I found the fish portions a little small. The fish was perfectly fresh, but of a low-quality product. The salmon was not tonight, as one of the other posts reported, "buttery." And one of the fish portions was not recognizable (not any of your typical sushi fishes-- not yellowtail, snapper, white tuna, mackerel, or even fluke.... it may have been bluefish? It was tough and not particularly tasty). The Sushiya roll was decent, but they didn't put any unagi sauce in the eel and avocado (and, apparently, cucumber) handroll (neither did they include enough eel). I didn't trust their uni, so I can't comment; another reviewer found that acceptable (it and ikura are usually my favorites!). The pictures on Yelp looked great, but, again, our sushi was not of that quality. The green/house salad, for those who wonder, is a small portion iceberg, shredded carrots and red cabbage, with a very tasty peanut sesame (rather than ginger) dressing. The dressing was good for what it was, but the base itself was disappointing. The miso soup was fine: the tofu is very tiny, and there wasn't much seaweed in it. But a good broth, and probably worth ordering. All and all, it was just OK. We haven't tried any other places, but this really wasn't worth making an addition to our dining-out rotation. read more

I was REALLY hoping to like this place. Williamsburg has a dearth of decent sushi. I ordered a cucumber roll and a hurricane roll ("tuna, avocado, roe, wasabi") for take-out. This sushi was so good! Everything was fresh and tasty! Little wasabi roll was the bomb. Try the firecracker roll for those of you who like things spicy. Such a pleasant surprise! We were seated right away, the wait staff was super friendly, our questions were answered quickly, my daughter's request was met with a smile, the food came out accurately and not rushed. Our additional order took no time at all. I was incredibly happy with the quality of the sushi - while we aren't sushi snobs, we know the differences between OK sushi, good sushi, and excellent sushi.
