Saltado
Yesenia R.

I love Peruvian food and Japanese food so this was a welcoming surprise during the pandemic to Newark. The food is amazing and the prices are great. I love their lomo because the quality of the meat is good and not tough like most places. I was a little bit anxious about trying their sushi, but it was amazing. The Godzilla roll, spicy crunchy tuna roll and the spicy shrimp mango roll were my favorites. The only thing I ordered that disappointed me was the saltado pasta which I usually get from other restaurants and it tossed in a dark soy sauce, but theirs was white and very bland. I have also ordered large catering order of sushi for a party and it was a hit too.

I tried this spot up for a pick up recently and I must admit that I was skeptical because it's an fusion restaurant. Asian fusion and Peruvian makes for an interesting combination. But you get the best of several worlds, something for everyone I guess! I got the California roll I got was really good. I also tried their salchipollo and that too was really good. Their pork and chucking dumplings were flavorful and I tore those up quickly in the car. I'll be ordering from here again!! BTW the chicken ramen was fulfilling, next time I'll request some chili oil, at least I had some already!!

2 for 1 California Roll Family Crunch Special

Tried it for the first time last week, I ordered off Uber eats. I tried both sushi and their Latin platter. I'd say 3.5 stars but rounded up since the pricing was good. The sushi rolls were good and the packaging and delivery was great. The two for 1 California rolls was what reeled me in to order when I was going through menus. The Family crunch was a great deal as well and the sushi was really good. Unfortunately, the Hispanic food was very disappointing. The pork chop was very over cooked and had no real flavor. I just tasted burnt and even with adding salt & adobo it was just eatable. What really saved the meal was the soup. Man oh man was it good. I will try them again, but even so I would recommend the sushi especially for their great pricing.

7. Shrimp Tempura Roll

7. Shrimp Tempura Roll Im so disappointed in this. How are 3 of my rolls just rice and seaweed??? (I ate one and noticed it had nothing in it) the fact that I come to Sushitobox often this doesn't make me happy and I didn't even get a receipt. I feel like I can't even complain to the manager cause nothing will get done. People make sure you check your food before leaving!! Its my birthday and I had a long day of work and have been craving sushi for these past few days all I wanted was some good shush I and of course I couldn't even get that.

The only thing stopping me from giving this place 5 stars is the often very slow service. It's friendly, but SLOW. Maybe I make the mistake of coming here when I'm starving... BUT the maki leche de tigre is amazing and the buns and dumplings and standard sushi rolls are fresh and delicious. A great and surprising addition to this part of Newark.

This restaurant was surprisingly good with decent prices! I never thought a peruvian restaurant mixed with Asian would ever work good together . My boyfriend and I ordered the 30 piece family crunch which comes with 10 Shrimp tempura roll, 10 California roll , 10 spicy California crunch. We also ordered the lomo pollo that comes with chicken , white rice , soy sauce and French fries . Our bill was $30 Our entire meal was delicious. I will definitely return for the sushi but not so much of the Lomo meal. The woman that serves the food was very attentive, courteous, and helpful. Parking is horrible because the restaurant sits on a very busy main st.

Food is more so worth 3.5... but like someone else here said in their review, its worth rounding up due to their fair prices. I have only ordered in delivery from this place. Of everything i have tried, the best for me was the sushi burrito. It is fresh tasting, satisfying. and has a lot of crunchy vegetables in it. I have ordered it maybe 3 times now for 10 bucks. Everything else i have had was just okay. The shrimp bao is OK but i have had better at other restaurants (e.g. Fujiya Ramen). The same goes for their pork ramen and chicken ramen. The beef empanada was a bit tasteless, but the chicken empanada was like a handheld chicken pot pie. Only downside was the inside of the empanadas were cold when we got them delivered, so we had to warm them up more ourselves. I probably will not order them again. The maki brasero was ok, but not worth ordering again. The same goes for the tuna acevichado (was covered in too much of a mayo based cream sauce which i found overwhelming). Upside is the prices are good, so i would say it is all still worth it. Nothing was bad. Love those sushi burritos!

This a great spot to pickup some sushi. Great prices and good variety. They even have rare drinks.

El Sabor De Su Casa - Ceviche Mixto

Their food is 10/10 with large portions, fair prices and most importantly, the food was flavorful and hit the spot! steak fried rice- lots of umami, generous portion and topped with scrambled egg. This is a must order! Bistek Ala pobre- a bowl of white rice, fried plantains, French fries and 2 pieces of steak seasoned very well. Breaded chicken with rice and plantains and fries- thinly breaded and crispy, a generous portion as well! Lime lemonade - a carafe we order- sweet and flavored just right! Base ceviche- a must order as well! Perfectly balanced and seasoned with lime and everything needed for a great ceviche. They have other kinds but I'd gladly order this again. Street parking, service is friendly, credit cards/ cash. Restrooms are clean.

The pan con chicharron was incredibly packed, I could not even fit it in my mouth, so much flavor yet little fat. The tamal was good, not the best I've had but pretty solid. Both were "true" Peruvian servings. The jugo especial was very good!! It took me back to going to the mercado back home and getting one. The service is absolutely incredible. The owner is incredibly sweet and told us his story about his family's restaurant back home. They have plenty of seating and a nice bar area as well. I will most definitely be coming back to give their lunch and dinner dishes a try!

They have 9$ lunch specials on weekday's, which I got, while my friend got the ceviche. Both our meals were fantastic- you can tell the corvina was super fresh while my soup and pork chop was cooked to perfection. Make sure to get the emoliente- it's freshly brewed and very unique. It kind of reminds me of sweetened herbal tea with barley and fruit overtones.

A modest restaurant, that seems to be run by family/close friends, which turned out to be some of the best peruvian food ive had in New Jersey so far. I really was craving ceviche and peruvian fried rice when I stumbled on this local store on Yelp. I did have difficulty placing an order at first, but once the man realized i speak some spanish and wanted to order food, he seemed to try to apologize and took my order. When i came in for pickup i was greeted by two workers who did indeed only speak Spanish. I think they forgot to cook my order because when i asked them about my pickup, the man was startled and asked me to wait an addition 10 minutes. After waiting, i received my order and paid (cash only). As a side note, they do have two small tables set outside for those who want to dine in. Despite the issues I had with getting my food, i have to say I am very impressed with the amount and quality of food. It really took me back to food in Peru and I was so happy to have found a good local shop. We asked for the spicy ceviche mixto and arroz chaufa mixto as well. The ceviche had a very good kick and was the best Ive had in NJ. Arroz chaufa was served in a large tray and was an unbelievable portion size. It looked and tasted very home-made and definitely could serve at least 2-3 people. For the price, taste, and quality of food, i dont think you could find better in NJ. It definitely adds fierce competition to larger peruvian restaurants. I know I had difficulty ordering but I do appreciate the hustle of a family serving its community. If you speak spanish or are willing to pick up google translate Id definitely recommend coming here. Will be back!

WTF IT WAS ACTUALLY SO GOOD I COULD NOT BELIEVE. don't even get me started on mixing this heavenly rice with the green sauce (it's everywhere oh god what do i do). It just got better and better with each bite, I NEED to try this again with chicken and shrimp mixed in. No negative notes this is the best rice i've had in a long time flavortown. Tallarine Verde con pollo asado (9.2/10) - At first glance these noodles gave me a pesto vibe, boyy was i not ready for what i was gonna eat. I had a difficult time picking a favorite between this and the chaufa, so i didn't and went ham on both of them. The chicken had a beautiful grilled taste to it and was a perfect balance for the noodles. the green creaminess, oh so creamy I was slurping that thang up (pause?). The potatoes were a nice touch but the noodles truly were the star of the show. Green sauce (9.4/10) - WHAT IS THE SECRET INGREDIENT, GIVE ME IT NOW. I can't quite put down exactly why but this flavor is like no other sauce i've had, everything you put it on brings the flavors to a whole new world (maybe even galaxy). That shit is like crack bro i try it once and now im hooked, licking the cup dry like a dawg. the spice is almost not even there but the flavor, oh god the flavor, i cant hold it in. (oops). I need this sauce bottled up and on slathered all over my body. Yellow sauce (8.8/10) - Switch the spice and flavor levels of the green sauce and you are met with this vibrant yellow masterpiece. If you're looking for a nice little kick in this food from the gods i recommend slathering this on your food and body (optional but recommended). After driving around for over 30 minutes trying to find parking in a notoriously difficult area in Newark to find parking, we finally parked about seven blocks away. When we arrived around 6 p.m., the restaurant was completely empty. The hostess and waitstaff were all sitting on their phones at the hostess stand, and the rest of the staff was seated in the kitchen. It took a few minutes before anyone acknowledged us. We were seated in the floral themed area that feels like you're outdoors but aren't. The chairs were uncomfortable and kept sliding against the door. From the start, our waitress seemed annoyed by us and made us feel like we were not welcomed. We ordered the mussel appetizer, which came with corn, tomato, and a cilantro vinaigrette and it was delicious. For our main dishes, we decided to share the seafood soup and get the Pobre Steak, which included steak, white rice, sweet plantains, and fries. I wanted to order the Tallarine pasta with steak as well, but when I started ordering, the waitress abruptly took the menu and walked away before I could finish. She seemed irritated when I asked to upgrade the white rice to Chaufa rice as shown on the TikTok and other photos, but she said that wasn't an option. I decided to not to order the pasta for myself when she decided to come back because I already knew it was time to go. When the food arrived, the soup came without rice, which struck me as odd since most Spanish style soups include it. When I asked, the waitress said the rice was extra, so I ordered a side. The soup arrived about 15-20 minutes before the other entree. The flavor was decent, but the seasoning had an off, almost stale taste, and the yuca was undercooked. The Pobre Steak was taken to go because we were uncomfortable and the eggs on top were partially raw, and the fries were undercooked. The steak itself was well seasoned and tasty, though. Which shocked me honestly even though it needed a little char. The only other customers who came in during our visit were American and another waitress seemed equally annoyed but did have a better attuitude than ours. When the bill came, the server said, "I'll wait for your card," as if we were about to leave without paying, despite not having complain once. Also, the restaurant adds an automatic 18% gratuity regardless of party size. While I usually tip generously, I find mandatory gratuity for small groups frustrating especially when the service was bad and made us feel unwelcome. We had planned a relaxed date night, but instead, we left and went to our original choice for drinks, apps, and dessert. Overall, it was not a great experience, and I won't be returning.
