Very small place with like 5 tables and they don't seem to let u sit at the sushi bar. I asked the waitress if they had any off the menu fish, and she gave me a blank stare. She finally said no, but who knows if she really understood me. For dinner, I ordered the Chirashi which comes with 12 pc of sashimi. I received 1 shrimp, 1 imitation crab, 2 white tuna, 3 tuna, 2 salmon, 2 tamago, and 2 striped bass. Overall, the fish was fairly fresh, but I would have only chosen 1 or 2 of those type if I was going to order a la carte; therefore, I didn't feel like it was anything special. Who really wants tamago and imitation crab on their chirashi anyway? I was wanting to add a cold appetizer after finishing the chirashi, but my waitress was being unattentive, so when I finally got her attn, I just decided to get a quick dessert and leave. I had the fried cheesecake that comes with a scoop of green tea ice cream. It was decent with a nice presentation. The cheesecake is purchased and frozen, they bread it in the kitchen and flash fry it. The only bad part about a frozen cheesecake is the center is still frozen. So I couldn't put my fork into the cake to cut it after taking a couple of bites. Overall, I feel like this was just okay and was more casual type of place. If you've had great quality sushi with less common fish being brought in, this place pales in comparison.
Thanks Sue!!! I came here for my friend birthday. It's a small place so don't expect anything to fancy but it has home type feeling. The place was clean so that's a A+ in my book. I ordered the salmon teriyaki and can I say AMAZING.... My friend ordered the chicken teriyaki is DISAPPEARED..... The rolls were also fresh which is great, and love the decor. The prices were pretty fair so not much to complain at all.
I like the beef a lot. The sushi is also not bad. So is the dumpling. Overall, I like the food quality. However, the service is awful. No once serves us water. We have to grab bottle water for $1.5 each.

I endes up parallel parking about 3 blocks away and navigating the junky sidewalks and cold weather as made my way back to Elm street. When I made it to the restaurant, I was the only person there, which in my experience isn't typically a great sign. Needless to say I didn't have to wait long to be waited upon or served. I ordered the Black Dragon Roll and the Hot Stone Steak. Both were pretty good... neither were mind blowing. I'm glad Intried this place to see what it was all about, doubt I'd go out of my way to go back.

The tobiko sashimi in the cucumber was the best part. By the time I was done, still no drink was offered and I mentioned that the avocado was too hard. No comment. Still no customers in to eat. I left. No tip. Oh yes, and when I asked about why no eel rolls on the menu, he mentioned that there are none right now bc eel is too expensive (?). I have never heard this before in my sushi eating years, and was just at an "all you can eat" in central jersey where the bbq eel was abundant and the avocado was deliciously ripe...

This place is everything you'd dream for in a quiet neighborhood spot. The family that runs this place is kind. The food tastes fresh and yummy. The menu offering is both a little more than what you'd hope to expect but also provides all of the comfortable favorites I've come to love. Great prices with generous discounts depending on day/time. The happy hour special is fantastic for $20 and feeds two adults. In Manhattan, I might pay $10 for one special roll or maaaaybe 2 less-exciting rolls. But with this deal, you get 2.5 rolls for $10 (you need to order 5 rolls for the $20 special... just breaking it down as an example if you shared with a friend.) If I had to say one thing that stands out above all others at Sushi House 21... is the attention to detail. Take for instance, the miso soup. Normally you are #campmiso or #campsalad. It's the same level of miso soup expectation at most all small family run japanese asian fusion joints run by families of various asian ethnicities. Side note: I happen to think this family may be Chinese but I haven't asked and frankly, it's none of my business. but they seem so kind and sweet that if I had the courage to start practicing my Mandarin, I bet they would humor me and chat for a while... it's that kind of friendly family neighborhood feel. Ok... so back to soup. Right. Miso soup usually skews towards deliciously uninspiring. HOWEVER. Their miso soup is anything but bland. I'm not quite sure how to explain it... it's not knock-your-socks-off-eat-me-now delicious but it's also well above "average" and comes with the cutest lil mushroom yums. Each and every time, consistent, reliable, slurpable. All of this stuff is great news and totally meets my standard for "get what you expect" and "good eats" but what REALLY adds the cherry on top... the beautiful paintings. Inside, outside, all over... the artwork is so attention grabbing, so interesting, so well done... this level of care for the ambiance and the overall dining experience just reinforces the unexpected and enjoyable attention to detail. Finding a small family business like this... in a neighborhood that tends to skew away from eating out & towards South American cuisine... is such a welcomed treasure. Check this place out, make the trek from your job, your home, whatever... help keep them in business for years to come. In fact, they have an adorable 2 yr old daughter so we definitely want this family restaurant to not just survive, but thrive!
If it wasn't for Yelp, I would have never I repeat NEVER venture into a place like this or be able to find it. Sushi House 21 is pretty much in the middle of nowhere in Newark and I honestly will not walk around this area by myself at night. But I believe in Yelp and its 4.5 star rating (as of 2/9/15) so I put my life (and my friends' life) on the line for the sake of good food! Sushi House 21 as the name suggested - is a French restaurant that is run by a very nice Chinese lady. WHAT? Although they do serve sushi and sashimi; they are really a French/ Japanese fusion restaurant! My friend spoke to the chef Nelson (very friendly guy) and he said he's Chinese but lived in Montreal most of his life and was taught the way of the French cuisine along with Japanese. Parking: No parking lot for the restaurant but street parking wasn't too difficult; just make sure to park closer to the restaurant during night hours. As we approached the restaurant, we couldn't help but notice how beautiful the outer front wall of the restaurant looked, good sign definitely! We called ahead to make a reservation since we had a party of 8 so when we got there at 6pm, we were seated right away. The restaurant was not very big; there were only 7 tables of 4s. The restaurant was dimly lighted but feels very cozy. Our waitress (I believe she's also the owner) was very friendly and accommodating, she apologized to us a few times because she said one of the cook was out that day so service was a bit slower than usual. We love how honest she was and we said we don't mind. The menu was quite extensive featuring both French and Japanese food. We all went for the Japanese food since we read how fresh their sushi and Sashimi were, they also had a special at night, I think it's 5 rolls for $20- great deal!! EVERYTHING tasted excellent!! All of their fish were super fresh, I had the Sashimi deluxe combo and everything was so delicious and did I mention FRESH??? That salmon was to die for, really melts in your mouth, chef Nelson knows how to cook and handle fish by the way he cuts the salmon, we had over at least 15 pieces of salmon sashimi and every piece was melt-in-your-mouth good!! It's not just the quality of the fish but also the skill/technique of the chef. By the way, they are not stingy with their fish, when you get their sushi/sashimi, you get the FULL piece! This is not the ultra-paper thin slice that your typical sushi restaurants serve you; it's the real deal- FULL PIECE! The scallop sashimi was OMG- SUPER Fresh with a hint of sweetness. Melts in your mouth, it is not fishy at all, I have to say this is one of the freshest scallop I had for a long time!! And of course we have to talk about the Uni. YOU MUST GET THE UNI HERE!!! We didn't know this item was off the menu but we lucked out that night and they only have 8 orders left so we got them all. Our waitress told us to call first next time so they can make sure they have enough stock for us before we come. But that Uni was just heavenly! I can't say it's as good as what I had in San Diego but it's close enough. Creamy, neither fishy nor slimy, everything about it screams fresh!!! Definitely a MUST TRY!!! Our waitress ask us how we like the food at the end, we said everything tasted so fresh and she said that's because they get their fish pretty much every other day to ensure people get the freshest sushi/sashimi. NO WONDER IT'S SO GOOD!!! Price: inexpensive- Most entrées and sushi/sashimi combos are around $20, with that quality of fish they are serving, $20 is a steal. Overall: This is a true GEM in the Newark area, if not the New Jersey area. Super high quality fish, excellent service and an awesome chef will guarantee you get the best bang for your bucks. Now I only wish I live closer to New Jersey so I can come here more often. PS. I will be back to try out the mango mousse and cheesecake!!

My go to sushi spot! There are no frills, prices seem great for lunch. 8 pieces in each roll - comes with soup or salad. They are quick and it's an easy pick up. I haven't tried the sashimi or anything else except spicy crab, spicy Cali and a regular Cali roll. I know I know, I'm safe but it works for me and I give them high praise! The only thing I'd say is that they should get a bell or something to notify staff that you've arrived. A couple of times I'm left waiting at the front and don't know if anyone knows I'm there. read more

My meal was perfect. So much flavor. Generous portions. Everything I ordered was great! I ordered through Uber eats and honestly didn't realize that this place existed and I live in the area! I ordered 2 spicy crunch salmon hand rolls, a regular salmon hand roll, and vegetable Yaki Udon. The sushi was fresh and constructed well. I was really full after the second roll but gluttony set in and I had the third one because it was so good! I was also satisfied with the Yaki Don. No complaints at all except that I wish I knew about this place sooner! This may be my new sushi spot! read more

Glad that I tried Sushi for the first time at this amazing restaurant. I had the opportunity to try the Tuna Sushi (I forgot the exact name) and it was delicious. Also tried the grilled chicken teriyaki which hasn't been added to the menu yet from what I was told. It was also good. No complaints! It's alright... The service is what sucks about this place, it's forced and fake, I feel like I am bothering when I ask for something.. I order delivery a couple of times, the miso soup always comes half empty, when I asked the lady to please fill out the container, she rudely said that that was the portion and If I want full container I have yo pay double. The rolls are good, but not many option of fish, just the usual salmon, tuna, shrimp, crab and max of a yellowtail if so... Everytime I go they don't have it... It's convenient located, has delivery and ok price. That's pretty much it. read more
Erm - did you know a 5 dollar eel roll can change your life? DID YOU?!?!?! Well it mugguh fuggin can! My *go-to* roll will always be the eel with avocado... Because I live the fancy life. I also ordered the Crazy Tuna roll... again... life changed before my freggin eyeballs! I do not know if we were hungry or what - but GAWT DERN if that was not one of the best sushi meals I have had in a long time. and the PRICES!?!?!? BEYOND reasonable. Especially for such fresh and quality food. The service was great, love the interior (not frilly, but thoughtful), the portions were filling, the price was on point. I love everything about life because of that lunch. The guy ordered a sashimi plate of some sort. Not sure what it is called, but he was in heaven! SO much fish. He loved it all but the octopus. (We love octopus) but he said it did not takes the way we are used to it tasting. Other than that...The presentation, amount of fish.. everything... I'm super pumped that I've finally found a great sushi restaurant near me =]. The service here is great and Chef Nelson even came by to talk to us. Some of the items I recommend: - torched salmon belly (not on menu, but a must order! The taste is great and it literally melts in your mouth) - steak on hot stone (not on menu. This is super flavorful and tender) We tried a lot of items on their menu, and the only thing I'm not too crazy about is the ramen. It lacked flavor to me, but the pork in there was quite good. read more

YUUUUUUUUM. Can't wait to come back Atmosphere: Small and neat. Came in around 6pm on a Tuesday and there was only one other party, but it started picking up around 7 Food: Whenever I see duck on a menu I go bizzerk. Duck confit and risotto. Alas, I also read how great the sushi was so I had to try a spicy tuna hand roll. The hand roll came out first, and my oh my is this fish FRESH. Sadly, the tuna wasn't as spicy as I had liked (it actually wasn't spicy at all), but regardless it was tasty and all of the sushi ingredients blended well. My duck confit was huge, filling, delicious, and totally worth the $16. The skin was crispy and the meat was tender, and the risotto was cooked perfectly and was bursting with flavor. I miss it now as I type. Service: Kind people own and run the place. The woman told me to come back and save room for dessert the next time. This is so happening. read more

Chef Nelson from Montclair NJ opened this new restaurant in Newark. He is so creative and care about quality of food. I recommend all his food. Please try out! You will love his food. My recommendation: Cold app : hamachi salad Hot app : shiitake ebi mushroom ( if u are lover for mushroom and shrimp, this is the dish to order! ) Shushi and sashimi : everything great! You pick whatever you like to try!! Enjoy!! read more

I know their name has sushi on it... But I really think they should switch and focus on ramen. I am giving them 5 strays for an awesome bowl of ramen for $8! They probably only have 9 tables plus a few bar seats so not exactly great for a large group. We came late on Monday night and it was pretty empty. Ordered ramen and also the chirashi bowl. The ramen really impressed us. Especially the pork. It is super tender and also has a hint of sweetness to it. Can't say it's authentic Japanese since it actually reminds me of a Chinese dish but it worked for us! The ramen noodles are also perfectly aldente. I did notice that our ramen was missing the egg on the pictures posted here. I won't take points away for that. She did say that they got a large lunch group that day and they all ordered ramen. The chirashi was good. But no uni, apparently have to call ahead for that. And they use the fake crab meat which is my pet peeve in any sushi dishes. Aside from that, the other items are pretty fresh. Service was prompt and not invasive. They have a lot of take out orders but not so much dine in which makes sense for the neighborhood. Hopefully they're here to stay. read more

Delicious but very very overpriced! For the price of 12 sushi, you can go to a quality all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant. However, if you're in the Ironbound and can't travel far, this place is the monopoly for sushi, and it's delicious. I give my highest compliments to the chefs with the Dragon Rolls. read more

I Went to sushi house 21 on Elm st at last night after they change new owership. I had an amazing meal stasted with the grilled squid and salmon carpaccio. I also had the Angus steak with porcini mushroom sauce and sushi sashimi for 2 which were simply amazing. At the end I gat the mango mousse for the dessert. It tasted strong mango flavor. I love it If you are interesed in trying something different, I recommend sushi house 21 for you. read more

my takeout order from Sushi house 21 was ok. it was fresh. However in my sashimi deluxe had imitation crab meat instead of octopus or any other fresh fish. My clean soup had no thinly sliced mushrooms or scallions in it. Very unacceptable Sushimi Deluxe platter and clear soup. I would never expect to get imitation anything at any good sushi and/or Japanese restaurants the clear soup was not the best. hopefully in the future they can do much better. read more

Don't recommend ordering take out. I ordered almost $45 worth of spicy salmon rolls, spicy tuna rolls, spicy yellow tail rolls, and a specialty roll. Specialty roll was ok, but all the other roll BARELY has any fish in it. Wasted money on mainly rice and tempura flakes. Highly disappointed. read more

That sushi was amazing and I was not expecting! We ordered a philadelphia and a spicy salmon roll, they came with excellent presentation, and tasting unusually much better than the sushis we've been eating around. This will be my place for japanese food for now on. The price is good, which is also a plus, especially in this region. read more
