Sushiko exudes Japenese-ness: A giant 3D mural/sculpture of Mount Fuji adorns one wall; Japanese paper lanterns, artwork, and architectural touches are visible from almost any vantage point. However, it appears to be run by a Korean family, and they have bulgogi on the menu; Welcome to America. Service is super friendly but spotty. I love the fact that they automatically bring green tea to the table, but then again, they often don't refill it unless you ask. I'm not sure the food is authentic to any particular standard, but it's decent: -- Two item bento. ($9) One of the better deals in the house, with largish portions; Teriyaki chicken was a bit odd since sauce it had strong smokey flavor; The CA roll was good and fresh; Came with soup, salad and edamame. On a another visit, I tried this with bulgogi and nigiri; The bulgogi was just OK; The nigiri was fresh and slightly above average; 3.5 stars. -- Unagi donburi. ($14). Not the best I've had though the portion was good; Eel quality seemed a little off, though it's hard to say why; 3 stars. -- Oyako donburi: ($9) Relatively standard, though a little on the bland side; They need to use a better sauce to liven things up a bit. (It really made me pine for the excellent version from Sunyyvale's Rokko, now closed); 2.5 stars Being convenient to work, I'll probably still hit Sushiko now and again, but I wouldn't take anyone here to impress them. read more

Another case of overblown rating based on relatively small number of reviews. Food is below average. I ordered their 2 item bento with karaage and sashimi (extra charge). First off the miso soup was watered down and tasted well like dirty water. Karaage was not crispy or batter was soggy. Sashimi which was salmon 3 pieces tasted fishy. Top it off portions are downright cheating. But in this case perhaps it was a blessing since I could hardly finish off what was served. First and last. read more

Coming here after certain meetings have become practically tradition. The food here is good and they are super accommodating whenever we call in less than 20 minutes ahead for a table of 12 (or more). I have fond memories of Sushiko with the welcoming staff and the chef creating fun rolls for us to try. The huge bottle of sake that our group polished off. 50 shots of sake spread among 9 people is a good amount. We were never rushed to leave and always had a great time talking to each other. And I'm pretty sure that this won't be my last visit here. read more

I should know better. Really, I should. I never take a chance on sushi unless I yelp it...but I took a daring chance, just because- well- I was lazy. You know the deal: its on the way, you just want your raw fish and you want it now, end of story. There were all of maybe four people in the joint, but it was also 2pm, so this was no clear way to measure the turnover. Immediately, the servers were gracious offering me tea and edamame while I waited for my to-go bento box of double sashimi and nigiri, all for a grand total of $15...the things I do for sushi. When I opened the box, something smelled off. And let me tell you- sushi should NEVER smell OFF, ever. ever. It wasn't until the ebi was half way down the ol' hatch that I realized that was the foul smelling thing. I sniffed the poor little shrimp tail, and that was the culprit...stinky shrimp. BAD. I mean I've had mediocre sushi, small portion cheap ass sushi, far too exotic and expensive sushi...but foul fish will get you a 1 star...and almost offensive that they didn't know...run run away... read more

I came here for dinner by myself on a Saturday evening, around 7pm. There was only one other table occupied when I arrived, so I didn't have any problems with getting seated. They told me that they had gotten some fresh salmon in the previous day, along with one or two other things, so I ordered the salmon sashimi, and two spicy rolls. Their menu has a lot of interesting rolls to choose from, and I found myself taking quite a while to decide on my order! They serve complimentary miso soup and edamame with dinner; both were tasty. My rolls and the sashimi were also flavourful and fresh, and the salmon sashimi was truly wonderful. They also served a scoop of green tea ice cream on the house, which was a great touch! The service was low-key but friendly and efficient, and as I was leaving the place was starting to fill up pretty rapidly. I'll definitely be coming back! read more

This place is so egregiously sub-par. This is the first bad yelp review I've ever written. Came here for lunch because I was craving Japanese and it was right next to my work. I got a bento box, and I can honestly say that I've never been so underwhelmed in my life. The edamame was not cold or hot, but it was watery for some reason. the tuna was low quality, the orange was tasteless. I wouldn't go so far to say that it was bad, but there was nothing memorable about this meal. It's food I would happily eat if it were free, but I would never pay for it. Would not go here again. There are way too many decent-excellent japanese restaurants in the area to justify going here. read more

So I came here for lunch while on my trip to Nor Cal... After I went to the Stanford Campus to make sure I don't get lost for that very important interview. I was the only one as I came right when they opened. The service was great the waitress that helped me was very sweet. I got the bento lunch box with two items. The salmon sashimi and the golgi beef. It came with tea, edamame, miso soup and salad. It was very filling and quite tasty. The reason for the 3 stars is for the price it was a little expensive for lunch about $11. I was pleasantly surprised to find a quality sushi place near me, as I almost always eat the melt in your mouth goodness in san francisco. I came in by myself after a lil workout, so I was hungry. I started with a sashimi appetizer. ($6) It includes three LARGE pieces of fresh and tasty fish. Instead of getting all 3 as tuna or salmon, I asked for one of each yellowtail, salmon, tuna. The fish was really yummy and my only problem (thus minus one star) was that the yellow tail piece had one of those unchewable tendons running through it. I also spotted one tiny fish scale. It took me a bit to get through all of the menu as they had many specialty rolls as well as hot cooked items. I picked the Sex Ban! (picture coming soon) It was delicious! Shrimp tempura on the inside w/cucumber, and salmon and baby scallops on top w/green onions and an unagi sauce. MMM I ate the whole thing and left very very full. My bill came to $20. Not bad at all. While going on a neighborhood search for good eats, I stumbled across this place and have since my first visit, been here several times. This place is a cute little mom-and-pop sushi place nestled into a busier plaza, on the corner of San Antonio and El Camino Real. Due to its location next to traditionally popular good eating jaunts, it is often overlooked and the patrons are scarce. However, that doesn't mean this place is not good. In fact, it is quite the opposite. The hostess is really nice and they personally greet you when you enter the restaurant. It almost feels as if they are inviting you to share a wonderful family experience with them simply by dining at their establishment. And the service doesn't get worse. They immediately take your order and bring you complimentary edamame without you having to ask for it first. Even the take-out orderers are asked if they would like water while they wait. The special, crazy rolls are great and the teriyaki bento boxes are even better. I would definitely suggest people should come eat here and forego the Castro places occasionally. p.s. While this place certainly deserves a lot more customers, I selfishly don't want them to be over-popular so that I can enjoy a good neighborhood dining experience and keep this gem to myself. read more

Went looking for a restaurant open at 4pm on a Sunday. Noticed the big10% off sign & the new Sunday hours outside so we went in, just me and the 6 year old. We had a very pleasant, un-rushed dinner. We shared fried calamari (yummy lite tempura batter- calamari slightyl fishy), enjoyed the complimentary edamame, each got miso soup (average). Daughter also got chocolate mochi. I had an advoacado/salmon roll, which hit the spot. Salmon was fresh enough, though I suspect it was farmed given the thickness of the fat. I prefer wild both for taste and for environment reasons, but the flavor of this salmon was good so maybe it was wild and just had thick fat. All in all it was a very pleasant meal. We just came back from the worst experience at sushiko. The place was too hot for a sushi restaurant. The AC was barely on (if at all). The beer was warm. And the best part of all, the sushi storage container was at 45 degrees (it should be around 33 degrees). And they charged us full price went I pointed this out to them!!!! I took a picture of the thermometer! Don't get sick! Go to Masa sushi around the corner, it's fantastic, much better! read more

Wow. I haven't had good sushi like that in awhile. After eating "grocery store" sushi one too many times in the past month, I completely forgot how much better and enjoyable sushi is when you pay a little more for it. The Aloha (spicy tuna with avocado) and the Crunch (California roll with tempura) were amaaaazing! I tried a few of the other rolls my co-workers got and they were fantastic too. Fresh, tasty, perfect size (I hate when they are so big you can't fit them in your mouth) (that's what she said) The service was also incredibly friendly. I felt like I was walking into a Japanese family's home and they were welcoming me for a nice family lunch. I will definitely be returning for some high quality sushi soon. read more

3 stars for food quality. +0.5 stars for food quantity. +0.5 stars for service. So I've only been here for lunch and it's only for their lunch special. I come regularly because it's totally the value relative to some of the other Japanese restaurants. For $12 the daily bento comes with 4 items: chicken teriyaki, gyoza, California roll, tempura. My other usual Japanese lunch spot charges the same amount, but gives fewer pieces of Cali roll and no gyoza. The reason why Sushiko can deliver a greater number of products is because the food quality isn't as high. There's a lot of panko on the tempura. The shrimps are pretty thin. The Cali rolls have quite a bit of sauce inside and use krab flakes instead of using a krab stick. I've had pretty good service experience thus far. The staff has been super friendly every time. They've even given us a free item to try every so often now that they recognize us as regulars. read more

Sushi is always fresh and the rolls are huge. They have complimentary edamame and that's always a plus. Staff is always friendly and attentive. Might not want to come here with a big group since it's on the tiny side. It's just a little place that makes me happy. But hey, it's refreshing to be in a restaurant where the waiters aren't bothering us with trivial things . . . like food orders or serving meals. We thought it made the meal more adventurous to have entrees, soup, the check, salad and sushi served in random order with 15-35 minute gaps in between. It's a welcome change of pace to have appetizers arrive with the check. But these mistakes are understandable - the waitress had a crowd of 7 other customers to attend to. I was brought here by a regular, but everyone who walked in during our dinner was given the same warm welcome we received. I am absolutely in love with their Red Dragon Roll (eel, avocado, spicy tuna), the appetizer mussels are a wonderful/weird combo of slippery and spicy, and I have never seen nigiri maguro look so incredibly edibly red. Price is about in line with most other decently good sushi places, but this place is a notch above in its service and quality. read more

Don't get me wrong, I still really like this place, and I love the staff. I am, however, taking off a star because I feel their freshness pales in comparison to that of Sushi Tomi in Mountain View. Went here for dinner last night with 2 friends, after a long walk at The Dish. I was impressed. This was the first time I had actually eaten in the restaurant. I usually get take-out. I had a california roll, a spider roll, and a spicy tuna hand roll w/ avocado. The spider roll was good, pretty typical, nothing out of the ordinary. California roll was good, too, as was the tuna hand roll. We did get free edamame when we sat down, and were offered hot tea, also. My friends ordered tempura (each had an order), plus hamachi roll, salmon nigiri, california roll, and shrimp tempura roll. Bill came to $51, not bad for dinner for 3 people. Service was excellent - granted, we were the only folks there. The waitstaff was very nice, and attentive, and the food came out very quickly. One of the best Japanese restaurants in the South Bay Area. The food here is excellent, I've never had anything but fresh fish and made to order sushi here, the quality is outstanding for the price. Their prices are about ~10% cheaper than other sushi places in the area, but don't let this fool you into thinking the quality is lower. The staff is very nice. After having dinner here several times the chef provided me a sushi roll free of charge on multiple occasions, which I have never experienced at any other restaurant. The restaurant is small, but it's décor has been thought through with comfortable seating and lighting. I highly recommend that you try this place out because I don't want this place to close down like many of my favorite local restaurants. read more

I weigh the food most heavily in reviews. Here, I had mixed results. The Cali rolls are mayo-mixed crab without cucumber, which isn't my preference and I perceive as a short cut. The edamame was over cooked and something about the miso soup just didn't live up to the expectations set by other restaurants. A nice, cozy Japanese place to dine at. This is one of the few sushi restaurants we patronize for lunch. It used to be good, ya know. But lately, the quality has been just so-so. I ordered a lunch bento box combo of sashimi and bulgobi and the sashimi was not as fresh as like it to be. The bulgobi on the other hand was very tasty and flavorful! I had a great night visiting Sushiko. While initially welcoming me and my husband in Japanese, they proceeded to charmingly converse in Korean and play KPOP. Their menu is spattered delightfully with Korean-Japanese fusion like Kimchi Udon soup and a Kimchi hand roll. I tried the latter tonight and it was by far the tastiest hand roll I've ever had! For that alone I would come back but my husband ordered several veggie rolls and was extremely happy with the quality since it's hard to find a good sushi place that can offer many fully vegetarian options. Our server was a sweetheart, was speedy and efficient and offered me and the table next to us a tip on how to make our leftovers better. (Use the rice with an egg and pan sear it in pancake shape and you've got yourself a treat!) Cold soba is difficult cook, and it is because that the chef needs to make sure the noodle cooked well and let it to be cold, without overcooking the noodle and without feeling the noodle is still hot, or Vice versa. Nestled in the crowded strip mall that is Village Court on San Antionio Rd and El Camino, we were drawn by the display meal laid outside the restaurant, and the fact it was lunch time and we were hungry. The waitress happily and enthusiastically greeted us, giving us the rundown on specials of the day. The menu was stocked with typical choices: lots of special rolls, tempura options, teriyakis of all kinds. Then we got to the bento box options, where things got weird. Bulgogi? Stir-fried kimchee? Calamari? This I had to try. Three items - $12 BROILED MACKEREL - came out searingly hot. Tasted fresh but under-seasoned. BULGOGI - onions and mushrooms and beef in a sweet, gravy-thick sauce. Lots of sweet, gravy-thick sauce. I still don't know what that really was, but it wasn't what I was envisioning. RIB-EYE TERIYAKI - tender and just sweet enough It's a good amount of food and variety for $12. And there are more options to try - I'm intrigued enough to come back for this menu. read more

I go here for work a lot, since it's close, not necessarily because it's that great. Overall, it's above average, especially for a non-japanese owned joint. Price - it's actually pretty reasonable - a 3 item bento box for ~$14. For example, if you go to Yo-yo sushi, expect to pay almost $20 for a 2 item if i remember correctly. But that's another story. Tiny place, but i don't think i've ever seen it at above-capacity, so you shouldn't have to wait too long. Service is overall good, but can be hit or miss. I've been there at times when it's not even busy, and but because they only have one waitress who also serves as the hostess, you can end up sitting there for a while, unless your waving your arms like you're hailing a cab. But the lady is definitely nice when she's giving you attention. Tonkatsu is hit or miss - sometimes thin, sometimes thicker, sometimes over-fried, sometimes not bad. Salmon teriyaki - never enough sauce, but you can ask for more and they never complain. Cooked ok. Decent size. If you're a cali roll fan - be warned - they're salty. Not Tomosushi salty, but above normal if you know what i mean. Miso soup is generally decent. Tempura is standard - thankfully not razor sharp batter, but the shrimp is that typical anorexic shrimp. Again, better than Tomosushi, meaning it's edible, but not great. Free edamame if you value that. Overall, not bad, not "good". read more

I am absolutely appalled at A. their Salmon teriaki serving size, i got a measly 2 inch by 3 inch single piece of salmon that was over cooked, virtually no teriaki, and I seriously can't believe that their sushi chef calls him self one, i mean, I got a simple roll of Cucumber, and when i got home to it EVERY SINGLE PIECE HAD FALLEN APART LIKE HE DIDN'T TAKE THE TIME TO MAKE SURE IT WAS SEALED UP!!!
