No funny smells, nice decor, and adequate seating. Decided to eat at the bar. Sunday, at 4pm.. Not overly busy, but ordering was fast, waiting for quite a bit of time. Good selection of beer, wine, sake, mixed drinks. Rolls are 11.00-15.00.. Fish was good quality, not superior.. Presentation was average. Overall, enjoyable, and satisfying. I would come back when in the area. Happy to have another option here. Bill total 100.00, 1 beer, 4 rolls, 2 sashimi, dessert, and appetizer, plus tip. Pricey. Love this place they make some of the best sushi I have tasted, try any of the sushi that's cooked in the oven it's amazing I highly recommend the Hawaiian Volcano it's very delicious. Double date night was an absolute delight at this gem of a sushi place. Over 60 specialty rolls to choose from meant everyone got exactly what they wanted. The sushi was fresh and the sashimi slices were generous BUT nothing compared to the Avacado BOMB if you don't order it you are doing your palate a disservice. Ambiance was lovely and it wasn't until we were walking out that we realized they had closed about 40min earlier- but we never once felt rushed. Our waitress was also a delight. I love going here for sushi. Though I haven't tried other places, I haven't needed to because the sushi is always amazing when I receive it. Staff can be a little slow at times but as a server I understand how that can happen in a, generally, very busy restaurant. They have other options, such as the Bolgogi, which my mom loves and gets every time. Complementary soup and salad are very refreshing and nice to have. I love being able to sit up at the bar and see them make the sushi, that's always super cool. read more

Five stars for consistently being awesome. I've been to Sushi Zen a dozen times or so and never had a bad experience. The food, service, and atmosphere are always top notch! When you first walk up to the place, you really don't expect it to be as nice as it is. It's in a strip mall, next to a CVS & looks a little dark from the outside. My first time, I was very surprised at how nice the interior was as my expectations were set pretty low. We've enjoyed boats of sushi, bento boxes of spicy chicken, soba noodles, tempura rolls, and of course, saki! My favorite is a large warm saki with a Sapporo beer. I know they do the formal saki bombs too, which are always fun! Excellent choice for date night, a big group of friends, or on your own at the sushi bar. Having come from Hawaii and now living in Michigan...It is hard to impress me when it comes to Sushi, Chicken Katsu. I was very impressed. The wait staff was quick, friendly and very helpful. The place is really busy and there are no tables available when I come and that tells me everything I need to know about a restaurant. I loved the food and the experience and atmosphere. Our family and friends really like Sushi Zen we are pleased they are in our hometown and that they expanded their seating area. We really like sushi and on nights where we don't eat at home it's a top choice for carry out . This place is always busy and if you want to dine in over the weekend you had better get reservations or get there early. Located in a strip mall plaza with a CVS and an O'Reilly's auto parts, we didn't expect much when we drove up on a snowy Sunday afternoon. But, we were pleasantly suprised when we entered and found a large, clean comfortable space and were greeted by a friendly host. The space was quite full with other customers but wasn't loud and didn't feel busy. Service was quick and pleasant the entire time - our waitress checked in often but wasn't intrusive, used plates were cleared quickly, beverages refilled before a request could be made. The food was delicious - we ordered the tempura appetizer, salmon sashimi, and several sushi rolls - and received more than enough food. The only negative might be the price of some of the larger/fancier rolls - $16 is a bit pricy, but they were delicious and I'd likely order them again in spite of the price. Introduced my in-laws to sushi (nigiri) at this restaurant. Yep, they lived in Brighton for many years but never find the appeal of eating raw fish. First time here for lunch ordered the sushi burrito,chirashi, and ginger salad.. not too much of fan the fish quality seemed different from most sushi places ..but i guess there isnt much in the area to compare too unless you go toward Ann Arbor or the metro Detroit area which is more competive when it comes too sushi. Our family has been coming to Sushi Zen for years. It is worth the 45 minute drive to us! Of all the rolls we've tried (and we have tried a LOT!) there are some standouts. Keeping in mind we like spicy - our favorite rolls are the Red Wing, Blizzard, Kiss of Fire and White Cajan. You really can't go wrong with any of these, but the Red Wing Roll is a definite favorite! Not the healthiest choice, as it is the only one deep fried of the four, but, when at Sushi Zen... Soup and salad comes with your meal. We skip the soup but enjoy the ginger salad. Edamame is a go-to appetizer for us as we wait for our sushi. read more

They really plate things Lovley!! It separates them from good to great. Price is awesomely affordable. And the sushi always is fresh and yummy. The restaurant itself is very clean, and has one of the better staffs in Brighton. I only get take out after work for the most part, but I never wait long and I'm greeted immediately by very friendly people. If you love sashimi tuna a lot like I do I'm not sure how I feel on the quality of their tuna, I do wish it were a little higher quality. Visited again last night as our normal local go-to apparently decided to close on Mondays (yet not update the hours posted on its website.) Seated right away, which you'd hope at 8 pm on a Monday. Service was attentive and good, despite the fact that we were handed off from one waitress to another early on in our visit. Menu is quite extensive, packed to the gills with all sorts of artisan rolls -- but if you're like me, and aren't really big on avocado, shrimp, or crab salad, you may find options on that side of the menu a little limited compared to other sushi venues. Ordered spicy tuna rolls, some tobiko roe, and a couple pieces of tuna nigiri. Started with the tuna nigiri, and was a bit disappointed rigt off the bat -- texture was okay, but each piece exhibited a very slight and unusual scent and aftertaste that made me question the age/ quality. Tobiko nigiri - quite good, and plentiful heapings of roe in each piece. Spicy tuna - nothing special to write home about here. The tuna in these is the pulverized scraps of tuna, so if you want your spicy tuna rolls to have chunky, fresh cuts of tuna inside -- you'll be disappointed (I can go either way). Found these to be quite spicy right off the bat, so at least there's that. Read an article the other night that proclaimed this to be the best sushi restaurant in Michigan -- it's not bad, but in terms of bang-for-the-buck, menu variety, or taste/ quality of food, it still has a ways to go to truly meet that metric. If all those elements were as good as the service and venue itself, maybe -- but not yet. read more

Sushi Zen is tucked in the corner of a strip mall in downtown Brighton. After moving here in August of 2015, we were eager to find a regular sushi spot that had all of our favorite kinds of rolls. We found Sushi Zen. The dining experience isn't really anything to get excited about. It's a ton of tables crammed in to a tiny space to make sure they can get as much revenue coming in to the restaurant as they possibly can. And I get that. It's just uncomfortable being able to hear the conversations of every table around you. The sushi was really good, which seems to be the common theme with all these reviews.
