This is absolutely hands down my FAVORITE place to get sushi in the brighton/Howell area. The staff are very attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is light and calm. Although it's tucked back in the corner of a dated shopping plaza the establishment itself is spotless on the inside and very welcoming. I've been to quite a few sushi bars around the brighton/Howell area and this is without competition the freshest. My food is always served promptly and comes out looking as stunning as it tastes! Being local to the area I've been to this restaurant quite a few times. We've tried many of the rolls on their menu and for the most part we've enjoyed them. They have been, in the past, unbearably busy and the wait can be long on Friday nights. Though, as of late, I've noticed a change in the "busy-ness", where it has been slower than usual and unfortunately that could be reflective of quality of their food. For me, it's just not as exciting as it used to be to go to Sushi Zen. If you do decide to come here, try their Chicken Yakisoba it is very good as is their Orange Crush Roll. So my buddy, Mike, and I are waiting for our food and this Hispanic guy walks in and sits in the table next to us while blasting mariachi music (it hasn't been wiped down yet). He immediately Downs a beer and tears through his food before we can even place our order. Throughout our stay, he keeps getting up and walking around the restaurant; he even asked where the bathroom was twice and walked into the kitchen multiple times and as well. As I'm talking to Mike, we hear the sound of someone throwing up...homeboy threw up his second beer. Went to the back again, sat down, and bolted out. Then the had the gall to COME BACK INSIDE. Cops pulled up as he was leaving again and put him in the back of the car. Not even upset I forgot my leftovers. Wildest restaurant experience in a while. Living in Whitmore Lake, we're sort of in the boonies. The benefit is that we're 15-20 minutes away from food hubs on all sides - Ann Arbor, South Lyon, Pinckney, Brighton, Howell. Brighton's Sushi Zen may have a lot of competition in downtown Brighton, as there's no shortage of cool restaurants and bars, What's more, they're tucked away in a strip mall next to a car parts store, whereas some of its competition is right off the main drag. Regardless, they're not hurting for attention. We went around 6:00 p.m. on a Saturday, and we quickly got in line for a table. We waited about a half hour, but during that time, the waiting area became so filled up that people had to prop the door open to stand halfway out of the building. The place was popping off. Sushi Zen is defintiely a date destination; there's soft, dim lighting and an amazing bar area that wraps around the sushi prep station. Honestly, I'd never want to sit at a booth when I could get a seat at the bar adn watch these master Sushi makers work their magic. They even have full-sized sushi boats (shaped as such). It was cool to watch. The vegetarian roll options were plentiful and there's a nice mix between sushi, bento, tempura and other meal options. The food was pretty strong, as was their ginger salad. I ordered a strawberry roll (can't remember the name, but it had a fresh strawberry and strawberry extract drizzled on it) among others. I also had one of their mixed drinks, which was really good. I can't quite give them a full five stars, because the prices were oddly high for a few items that rivaled some of the best places in Ann Arbor (it outpaced Miki, and Miki is even more trendy and in a cooler city). A bento box and roll combo can be $17-20ish. As that's my only gripe, I highly recommend this place. read more

I have had Sushi in 6 different states and this is the absolute worst. The sushi rolls are tiny and all taste bad. They give a mayonnaise and Sriracha hot paste to cover the taste. Soy sauce is packets should have been a hint and also being next door to O'Reilly Auto parts. Overpriced as well 6 rolls $80. Tuna is like ground Starkist. This is for the food (sushi) only. I did not step foot into this restaurant. My boyfriend went in to get the order that we called in earlier. We got 3 rolls to go that we ate in the car because we had just finished snowboarding. The Philadelphia Roll had slimey, not fresh tasting salmon in it and tasted the worst of the three rolls. I would've expected this from a buffet. The MSU roll was just simply not very appetizing and the tempura was not crispy enough or not fried enough so it got soft/soggy fast. The Eel sauce was crappy quality in my opinion. It was of very thin consistency (like soy sauce) and it was too sweet. (I love eel sauce usually but not from here) The caterpillar roll was the best of the three but, I still wasn't pleased. Eel was the only meat/fish in the roll and there was barely the smallest sliver of it in each piece of sushi. (The only reason I got this roll was because I love eel) Bummer that there wasn't more! We have taken probably about 20+ friends there when they visit and all of them request a return. There rolls are not only fresh and delicious but reasonably priced. They have good miso soup and the ginger dressing on their salad is to die for! I recommend the Superman Roll and the Crazy Boy. Their Bento boxes are good.
