My new favorite Sushi Spot in KC!! I first heard about this place from a few of my friends in my crossfit gym (and of course searching for places to eat near my house). I was a little hesitant at first when i drove by - it was a small hole in the wall. It was an excellent decision to stay and enjoy my dinner. I ordered the Lavender Lemonade to drink - OMG it was delicious! I ended up ordering the sushi/sashimi dinner with miso soup. It unexpectedly came with crab rangoons and a crab salad. Both were delicious and fresh and a wonderful surprise. Not only was the fish fresh and delicious - but who I believe was the owner came over and made sure I knew what type of fish each piece was and provided recommendations on how to pair them. Was a wonderful dinner experience. More so for me because it was a treat to myself and I was able to enjoy a good book along with dinner. The service was excellent and unobtrusive - which made it much more enjoyable for me eating alone. All to often I end up somewhere where they are overly attentive when I'm at dinner by myself with a book. Instead they made sure I was well taken care of without interrupting. Overall, service and dinner was excellent! I ended up coming back here a number of times prior to writing this review - I even dragged my boyfriend along on one his trips back to KC. So, my son suggested we go out and grab some Sushi. Since I'm from California, I know z little bit about Sushi. Been to Jungs on state line back in the 90s and that was great, so I was hopeful that this place in lenexa would be good. I was pleasantly surprised. Showed up on a Monday night around 7ish. We got right in, and immediately had great service. Ordered the seaweed salad- great! Very fresh, but suggest to people who read this, to maybe split it with your guest. They give u amble amount. We then ordered a variety of sushi rolls, all great. But the one that stood out the most is the DINOSAUR ROLL... holy cow, was it good! "Good sushi and where to find it in KC" - that's been my underlying motivation since I've moved from NYC. While there have been a few mishaps with my seafood adventures in the Midwest (note to self - do NOT use frozen supermarket lobster tails in a lobster boil), thanks to some internet research and good ole' asking around, I've encountered some sushi options in the "passable to pretty good" range. My experience at Sushi UNI fell on the "pretty good" side of the spectrum. Sushi UNI is inconspicuously located in a generic strip mall, as I'm quickly learning many good ethnic restaurants are. To me, the locale doesn't matter - the quality of the food is paramount! So how did Sushi UNI stack up? First, props for providing some comp dishes - we received a squid salad (we returned again and weren't given this - maybe they had excess? And then another time we got crab rangoon - a bit random) - it was delicious. As well as an equally satisfying salad of julienned veggies, imitation crabmeat, tempura crunchies and sesame seeds - okay, maybe not suuuper authentic, but I still dug it. Now onto the sushi - we got a few rolls (dragon, spicy crunchy tuna) - the rice was well seasoned, the fish tasted fresh, and the pieces were cut to manageable size (one of my pet peeves is when rolls are cut into GIANT pieces). We also ordered a sushi combo, and again, the fish tasted fresh and of good quality. Sushi UNI won't necessarily win points for ambiance but the service was warm and friendly, and the sushi delicious, at least on par with the East Village joints I used to drop into in NYC. Went here after a softball tournament. The place was packed but they got us seated within 30 mins. Food was fresh and service was awesome!

After a terrible experience at another sushi place I was a little hesitant to jump back on the sushi train. I had heard great things about Uni's and decided it was time to get my fins wet again.... Oh man, it was Aaaaamazing! Don't be thrown off by the tiny restraunt. While there is only about 7 tables inside we were seated immediately during the dinner rush. I of course had to grab a bowl of egg drop soup (I think it tells alot about a place) and it was fantastic. We were served complimentary seafood salad which was perfectly flavored. We ordered three sushi rolls that looked just as good as they tasted. Our pics for the evening... The Snow White (best I think I've ever had ), the Rock N' Roll and The UNI Roll. Sushi Uni is a great small sushi restaurant that is not as expensive as some of the sushi restaurants downtown. It has a great friendly happy vibe to it. We went in, the restaurant was packed, every table that we could see was seated, but we were greeted immediately and they offered us a two person table in this little hallway that they have, which might sound weird, but I loved it. We had our own little sushi restaurant to ourselves. The server, Ryan, was great and very attentive. The sushi was beautiful and the spicy crab salad was delicious! Upon entering the restaurant we were seated right away. The vibe was nice and chill. This could be a good place for a date, girls night or even a family dinner. I immediately thought this could be a go to sushi place as long as the food turned out great. Fast forward to the food, we ordered the following: - crab Rangoon: good, nice amount of filling - crab salad on the house: I surprisingly enjoyed this but I think it would be better with a spicy mayo or some type of sauce drizzled on top - spicy tuna: loved the spicy tuna. We would order the sashimi dinner meal and salmon teriyaki dinner meal or lunch, shrimp veggie tempura, Alaskan roll and more. The fish is always fresh and portions are a good size. I've been coming to sushi for years and I don't even live in the KC area. This place is the go to for sushi. Their fish is fresh and delicious! Whether it is tuna belly or yellowtail, it is mouthwatering. They also serve hamachi Kama (yellowtail dollar) that is so buttery it literally melts on your tongue. Service is splendid! Always a good experience. My only complaint is that every time I eat here, I end up throwing up because I get too lit. That's nobody else's fault but my own though. read more

I can't say enough about this place. They butcher all their own fish, down to the yellowtail jaw (Hamachi Kana) which is listed as an appetizer but could feed two. Call ahead for it, as it's a limited item. You should try the sashimi lunch with the magic mushrooms. I regularly come up from Lawrence just for this spectacular food. read more

I've only been here for lunch but I love it. I could probably eat here a few times a week. I got the 3 roll special for about $12. You get a soup or salad, which I got the hot and sour soup which was excellent. And 2 crab rangoons and 3 rolls. My favorite is the daikon roll. I got the 87th street roll once and I didn't love it, and I also got the eel roll. The raw fish is fresh and so tasty. I was really blown away by this place! You gotta try it! read more

We dined at Sushi UNI for the first time tonight and it was great! We got there around 5pm and there was no wait but by the time we left at 6pm there was probably a 20 minute wait or more. We ordered 5 rolls (UNI, Fancy Smoked Salmon, Super Tornado, Honey Wasabi, and asked the waiter to surprise us with one which was the Scorpion). My favorite was the Fancy Smoked Salmon roll it only has 5 pieces but they are very large. We also did not see any kids meals on the menu but ordered some Teriyaki chicken for our daughter. It came with 2 Crab Rangoon's and a soup or salad we shared the hot and sour soup. They also treated us to a complimentary spicy crab salad which had a great fresh flavor. Everything was delicious and came out quickly. The service was good and our drinks were never empty. We will be back! read more

Uni has 5 booths and 2-3 tables depending on how they're arranged and there is no waiting area. Even on a Tuesday night, this became problematic when people showed up shortly before 6 and the place was full up and elected to leave. The counter to that is that this establishment delivers...what's better than a place that delivers, right? As for the food...it's not quite there. The sushi rolls seem exceptionally delicate/don't stay together well. The menu (like a lot of places) doesn't indicate the full breadth of what's going on with the items therein (a problem for people like myself with food allergies). I really wanted to try the stuffed/fried mushrooms, but they came out loaded with onion (that's my allergy) and I was out of luck. The only real bright spot at this place is the homemade honey wasabi. 2x honey wasabi rolls saved this experience. The hot & sour soup has pork in it, which is a welcome addition, but it really seemed to lack flavor. The egg drop soup is on par. The vanilla bean ice cream was a solid dessert option. Continuing my search for good asian food, we ended up at Sushi UNI. First thing I noticed is that this is NOT a Japanese owned Japanese restaurant (Is there such a thing in KS)? It's not the freshest fish but pretty good. It's pricy if you decide to get actual sushi and not the rolls. We got... 1) Ahi Tuna Roll - Pretty good 2) Spider Handroll - comes with 2 pieces but the crab was a bit old and came with too much sauce. 3) Rainbow Roll - Good. 4) Salmon Sushi - OK 5) Miso Soup - Pretty good. They make their own miso soup! It's NOT the dehydrated kind. :) Complimentary Spicy Seafood Salad (I think it's called...) pretty good. It's just imitation crab, cucumber, spicy mayo. Good service. My favorite sushi joint in KC! This is my go to sushi spot whenever I'm in town. They have a wide assortment of rolls and their appetizers are delicious and fresh. The tend to run out of the hamachi Kama from time to time just FYI. They'll often give us complimentary items from time to time, which is usually the spicy crab salad. It's very unique and I haven't seen it at any other sushi restaurant I've been to and is absolutely delicious and worth ordering in its own right. The list of rolls is a bit vast so we usually each order a different roll if I'm eating in a group. Variety is the spice of life they say. Sushi UNI looks small from the outside and entryway, but past the dividing wall, it opens it to a dining space. I've had Sushi UNI a few times now, and I have to say that it's one of the better sushi places in town, in terms of raw sushi. Since I only eat raw sushi, I can't comment much on the cooked rolls. My dining mates seemed to enjoy theirs quite a bit though, if that's any indication. We're all big sushi fans, so take this as you will. Their prices are fair and reasonable, which is hard to find in some parts of the KC metro. That alone is a driving factor for repeat visits. When it gets busy, the service can get rather slow. But otherwise, the wait staff is generally attentive. Honestly, there's really nothing much else to say. It's kind of in a weird spot within a strip mall, but it's worth the trek for me.
