Based on the other reviews, I know Sushi Train has a pretty average rep. But, I had a really nice AYCE (all you can eat) dinner experience here. Typically, I always go to Sushi Katsu but I wanted to try something a little different this time. Going to the same thing gets tiring eventually, so I thought I would give Sushi Train a shot. Sushi Train was not too busy on the day that I went. Honestly, that is so nice compared to the commotion and crowdedness of Sushi Katsu. Since Sushi Train is not as popular, I kind of expected there to be less people. There was literally no wait for table of 15, without having made prior reservations. I also think that this location has more seating than Sushi Katsu. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the little train that delivers sushi in action. If you've never been there, the train is only located around the main table in a circle. Those seats, I imagine, are always full. Plus, the seating arrangement makes it hard to speak to others in your group if you have more than four people. Now for the food! The food was pretty standard for an all you can eat sushi restaurant. I don't have any complaints about the fish/seafood or the rice. For me, the fish to rice proportion was alright. The quality of the ingredients weren't the absolute best, but they were good enough for the price you pay. For us, the sushi came out relatively quick. For a group of 15 people, the service was actually quite nice. We had a nice guy helping ALL of us. To make it easier on him and us, we had two menu orders (two order sheets) going at the same time. Everything came very quick and if we needed any assistance, our server was really fast to help us. At the end, we ended splitting the checks into 15 separate end transactions. It was really nice to have this accommodation, especially because some people got drinks while others did not. At the end, 20% gratuity was tacked on. But, it was well deserved for the service we received and the amount of people that ate. I know that everyone's experience will be different. But, we had a really good time here. What ever-- I like Sushi Train. I went over the past week with a buddy who is nicknamed the "Sushi Killer". We got over to the Sushi Train about 6pm and found out right away why its called sushi Train. The main sushi bar is surrounded by a working model train set. The chefs (including the owner) work their asses off to keep cranking out wonderfully crafted All-you-can-eat sushi rolls and dishes-including some great choices such as the Avalanche Roll and their Choo Choo roll-- again usually served up right to you with the train! Cool! AND $1.00 BEERS (the good stuff too!!) during Happy Hour! Chatting with the owner and other patrons made our $24.99 All-You-Can-Eat Sushi destruction session really enjoyable. We did find out that there used to be a little boat and waterway around the bar instead of the train set-- but something that cool just ends to lead to people splashing about and breaking stuff I guess. when the new owners took over- they installed the model train and started making people (including me) very happy. I have no idea how this place has so many great reviews. Happy hour must be really cheap and people must get drunk really fast because I have a hard time giving it even one star. Yelp should have negative star reviews for places like this. I should have looked around a lot closer BEFORE I ordered. I tried this place because it is so close to home and I am big on supporting the neighborhood I live in. This place is FILTHY! They have a little train that circles the sushi bar, and drops of your food. It would be cute and fun for kids to introduce them to a new cuisine, but it was beyond disgustingly filthy. So were the tracks. There are wads of napkins hanging from the ceiling. They were bothering me so much that I had to ask what they were. I was told that they were from their Sake Bombs. Why they wouldn't clean them from the ceiling, I don't know. To top this off I observed the chef wiping his nose on his sleeve, after completing the meal. I knew I was in for at least 24 hours of paranoia about possible illness. They offer their Special rolls if you agree to pay an extra 2.99 as part of their all you can eat lunch. I ordered an Xmas roll. I am including a picture of the menu so you can see what I ordered. Also included a picture of what I got. Bottom line if you're going to bait and switch, just don't offer to begin with. The roll was supposed to have Tempura Shrimp and Cucumber inside and be topped off with avocado, tuna, tobiko. The roll I got had a soggy shrimp tempura with imitation crab inside and more stale tempura flakes on the outside. There was No Tuna. No Avocado and No Tobiko. I also got an Eel roll and the tail or fin had not been removed. I kept chewing this rubbery, nasty thing and finally spat it into a napkin. I was horrified. The Tuna and Salmon rolls weren't any better. Spicy but tasteless. I have had Grocery store Sushi that outclasses this by leaps and bounds, and let's face it, you don't go to a Sushi restaurant to experience below Grocery Store expectations. The food photographed surprisingly well for its lack of quality. It totally made me think of this Super Hot guy I used to know that had the unique ability to destroy the effect of his good looks by opening his mouth and saying something so beyond ignorant that you couldn't ignore it and distract yourself by drooling at his washboard abs. The Wasabi was hot, but didn't have that Wasabi flavor that I adore. To make a horrible meal worse, if you order the all you can eat, you're expected to choke down every single disgusting thing you ordered or you get charged an extra .50 per piece that you can't finish and they can't even be bothered to refill your water glass. If you like dry rice, bland Sushi, and playing Russian Roulette with the possibility of a food born illness, and you're fine with less than mediocre food and service, this place is for you! I was right across the street at the Starbucks, meeting a classmate to finish a project. She left after we were done, and I found myself at a loss for what to do for dinner. Then I remembered Sushi Train, and since I have been meaning to try this place out, I walked in. Sushi Train is a nice, big, spacious restaurant, and there's a lot of parking (it's next to a Goodwill.) The staff were nice--smiling, attentive, not too attentive but not absent either. I asked to be seated at the bar, and then asked about the all-you-can-eat, and they gave me my options; I'm glad they pointed out that if I could eat more than two rolls, it would be a good deal, and otherwise it wouldn't. I generally stop after two rolls, so I opted for a la carte and got the tempura roll and the unagi roll. The food came, delivered by the train. It's a cute little gimmick that made me smile. ^_^ I happily dug in--both rolls were DELICIOUS! *happy* Unexpectedly, the train came around again with something on the back. The chef in front of me smiled, pointed, and said, "Free appetizer." Not one to turn down anything free, I thanked him and took it off the train bed. It was a hollowed-out avocado, stuffed with spicy tuna. Unfortunately for me, I'm not a fan of spicy tuna. I ate two pieces, couldn't stand the spiciness, and left the other two pieces on the plate. (Note: I am an extreme WIMP when it comes to spiciness. Strangely enough, the only time I can deal is when it is wasabi or horseradish, or certain types of very mild Indian curry. Otherwise, if it's spicy, I won't like it.) Anyway. Eating alone at the bar was actually rather enjoyable. This may be weird, but I really appreciated the partition they had between the two dining spaces and the bar. It gave the illusion of a wall behind my back, and I feel a lot better when I don't feel like people are staring at my back (I know, it's just a weird feeling, but it's so much better sitting with your back to something.) Most places don't have this, so sitting at the bar always makes me feel uneasy because my back is completely exposed. Don't take this to mean it's not spacious, though. Even if the bar were full, I don't think it would feel TOO crowded. (Not unless all the seats were occupied by sumo wrestlers, anyway.) I also really liked the vibe in there. It was lively, but not noisy--there's a fine line, and the restaurant--chefs, waiters, other guests--stayed on the right side of the divide. I wished I had someone beside me to share in this experience, but alas, hubby was away, which is why I was eating out alone. When I was done, I got a nice surprise of a fresh orange--I hadn't expected that, but I definitely appreciated it. Verdict: I like this place a lot. Great food, nice atmosphere, the chefs and waiters are young and easy on the eyes... I want to come back with friends and enjoy a night out here. I'm definitely loving Sushi Train. I decided to give this place another shot. I stopped in for lunch last Friday and the place was dead. I think I was the only customer here, or at least the only one at the sushi bar. The sushi chef was warm, welcoming and friendly. We talked a lot over lunch. I have to say, I really enjoy sociable sushi chefs when I'm dining solo. I really had a good time while I was eating my lunch. The sad part was, the sushi rice was undercooked. I didn't have the heart to say anything to the sushi chef, but wish I would have now. The fish, unlike my last visit, was fresh and delicious! I almost wanted to peel the fish off and just eat it without the rice, but establishments that sell all you can eat sushi deals frown upon that. I hate to do this because the sushi chef was so nice, but I have to be true to my review and share this one. He offered me a "special treat". It was a single piece of tuna nigiri with a garlic sauce that he seared with a torch. I was real excited when he was making it, but when I ate it, it wasn't very good. The tuna was fully cooked and a little tough and it tasted like butane. He was holding the torch too close too it. Awesome concept! But it needs work. Overall, the food was just OK when you combine the horribly undercooked rice and the amazing cuts of fish, they kind of canceled each other out. The service was above and beyond fantastic! The place isn't the nicest. I think it's an old Golden Corral or something but the sushi, appetizers, terriyaki, etc is UNLIMITED and free. There are tables around the restaurant with servers constantly coming by to make sure your order is taken, the empty plates are cleared, etc. Service is great and the sushi comes out SO FAST. It's not grade A sushi (some of the fish are small pieces and the rice isn't as vingery as I like) but the service is awesome and it's just fun to gorge here! Went to Sushi Train for my daughters birthday today, sat at the counter with out three kiddos. The staff is super friendly and very attentive..the sushi chefs made a big deal for the kids sending everything on the train including little rabbits made of oranges. Great sushi, lots of it and it came quick. In last round they gave us an extra roll and we couldn't eat it all, they were very accommodating and didn't make us pay the left over charge, but even if we had to it would have been worth it. I really wanted sushi so I tried this place by my house. I was not disappointed with the sushi just the customer service. I showed up when they said food would be ready and when I walked in they were obviously busy, but the staff was not exactly friendly. I waited by the door for 4 minutes before I was even acknowledge then when I told her my name for my order she looked quickly and said not yet. I waited almost 10 more minutes before I asked again if she knew how long it would be ready... low and behold the order was ready the whole time... I visit every month or two with some buddies and I finally took my wife today for a lunch date. The place is great and my wife enjoyed it as much as I did. It's a cute spot for a date, even at lunch on a Monday. The sushi is the best part. Great selection of apps. Some expected faves like the fried gyoza (excellent!) and edemame, but my favorite is the totally unexpected fried stuffed jalapeño. Fantastic! The rolls include some standards and some house specialties. Have tried several with buddies; all very, very good. Today we shared the avocado roll (very fresh!) and the fried California roll (wow!). Had several nigri pieces, all tender and tasty. The shrimp and the unagi are the best, but the others were quite good, too. Customer service was perfect... Fast and attentive, food was out right away (seriously, less than five mins for our apps, sushi came out quickly, too, and there were plenty of other patrons). Our waters were never empty before a refill was offered, but they didn't hover either. And you can't beat the price! Easy drive, too, literally right off I-25 at Hampden. After coming here numerous times, it seems as though both experience and food has diminished. I'm not sure if it is the huge influx of customers but this place does not feel like it once did. The salad dressing is bland, the udon broth is spicy (which it shouldn't be and I have told them many times), and they have taken off a number of items off the all you can eat menu. This includes red snapper and seaweed salad from what I can remember. The Nigiri is still good along with other miscellaneous rolls. Pricing remains the same for all you can eat. Price of happy hour beer has gone up but that's understandable. What business can thrive with $1 happy hour beer? After 3 or $3 even, most adults are set. The price of beer has gone up to $2. No biggy. I would recommend a deep clean and slight remodel around the restaurant. Bathroom feels grimy/slimy inside and looks like its been neglected. The general seating area is ok. Been here a couple times before. Good service and a fun train at the bar to bring in your order. (The kids love that!) There are two different ways to order: Al la carte or the all-you-can-eat. The thing is is that if you go with all the specialty rolls (you know the yummy cooked ones, with fried stuff, or lots of sauce) you're going to get super stuffed fast. I love sushi. I may not be an expert, but I love love sushi. And my family loves it too. On a budget, it makes sense to get sushi al la carte (especially when you have kids), but man these kiddos they can eat quite a bit too! Their seaweed salad is good (But we would probably go without), their mixed tempura is pretty good (light batter) and one order is enough for 2 adults and 2 kids, and their cucumber, avocado, and California rolls are pretty standard. Hubby really liked the spicy tuna roll (although I can't say anything about it on my end because I'm preggers and I shouldn't be eating raw fish anyways). Oh and I do want to note that the sushi chefs will probably give you a complimentary roll (yum! But it will be something cooked/fried and with lots of sauce. Hmmm not sure if it's to get you full, especially if you have chosen to the all-you-can-eat route, but hey, either way both parties are happy, right?) The Chefs are very talented and keep the Sushi Coming out in a Steady but not to quick manner. And they come out and do SAKE BOMBS with you. KICK A** I went with a Philly roll, and it wasnt over packed with rice, and totally exploded with flavor in my mouth. They explain other rolls in the menu as well, that are apart of the AYCE menu. Like the DTC roll with slices of orange inbetween it. . Words cant even explain how great that was. And You must try the Rainbow roll with assorted fish on top. And the SUSHI comes around on a Train. We went to this place because our friend really wanted to try a conveyer belt place, we walked in and were greeted by a restaurant full of customers non of which were socially distant. The restaurant was very dingy. Our reservation was for 7:30, we arrived to this restaurant at 7:25. We stood waiting in line to be seated for 10 minutes, no one even greeted us or anything. Fine we were fine waiting but then this party of 4 walks in and pushes past us, cuts the line grabs the waitress and they get seated immediately. Okay this is what we apparently have to do, however we literally cannot find a waitress or anyone to help us. We wait for another 5 minutes trying to call over the waitresses and they totally ignore us. Finally one walks by us and we tell them we had a 7:30 reservation and that we would like to be seated, she says that we have to wait because there are no open tables and it is now past our reservation time and we are late, we try to explain we've been here since 7:25 but she interrupted us and just told us to wait. Okay we wait another 10 minutes. Then this other person walks in and into the restaurant, we assumed they were joining a party, but then they get seated, with their 3 other people cutting us off. I decide I'm done waiting by the door and walk deeper into the restaurant like the other two people did to grab a waitress. I try to explain to her that we've now been waiting for 30 minutes and we'd like to be seated, and she just started yelling at me that I need to be patient and that she's doing her best and that there are literally no tables to seat me at. Horrible customer service. We just left and went to Mika Sushi 3. They were such an amazing place and the customer service and presentation of the sushi was astounding. The worst service ever... all you can eat sushi... better have like four hours to spend. We where there for 2 and a half hours and they only brought me five out of 11 rolls I ordered. After waiting for a hour and 10 minutes and after having asked for a manager and STILL not getting the rest of my rolls I asked if I could have the ones I ordered to go she said no and that no manager was there. As I tried to explain that I know that there is no to go, but it it's all you can eat and I just simply didn't have another hour to wait for the rest of my rolls and I needed to go do things she yelled over me saying "it's okay." FYI: Most Japanese restaurants run by Japanese owners are closed for lunch on Saturday. I got the usual Cali rolls (2) for about $10 plus tip (for the waitress running around with my take out). It was rolled just right, not the flimsy way where the rolls falls apart or not like Costco rolls where it appears to be machine pressed. The decor is classy and you can be comfortable in here with a work lunch or a date. But here is where things get a little troublesome for me. The fish in the sushi is good. Not great, just good. The flavors don't pop and embrace your taste buds. I wouldn't necessarily have an issue with this if the prices reflected the taste. However, the prices on the rolls are as expensive as they are at the top notch sushi places where the rolls are indeed, filled with so much flavor, they take your taste buds on a memorable ride with each bite. If the cost reflected the taste, I'd be okay with it and given more stars but as it currently stands, I'd not suggest going to this place for dinner. read more

I've been here several times over the years, mainly for the Lunch special for all-you-can-eat sushi, and generally it has been OK, but the pieces have been getting smaller and smaller, & there are other places in metro-denver that do this MUCH better and for a similar price. The pieces aren't even an inch big here for the lunch special, and have a tiny sliver of fish on top, so that you are really getting a huge chunk of rice. Two times now, the sushi has had a strange taste to it which quickly put an end to my lunch. They have a few non-sushi items for the all-you-can-eat which aren't bad, but the overall roll options aren't that great. There's also a ton of notes about do's and don'ts or you will get charged full price. I understand why they have to do this for much of what they list with the All-you-can-eat, but when your sushi pieces are all rice and no fish and you indicate that you will charge people if they don't eat all the rice too....come on. I would say the highlights are that they have been quick, even when they are busy, but you are really paying or all you can eat rice. read more

The positive: Simply put, great sushi. Yes, you're in Denver, and no, this probably doesn't compare to sushi restaurants on the coasts. But as a resident of a landlocked state, I always leave here fully and happy with my food. They have some great specialty rolls and a good happy hour. The negative: I'm not sure if this is the new norm but the past few times we've gone to Sushi Train, the service has been subpar. Last time, we had to ask our waiter to take our order after waiting for almost 20 minutes for them to come back to our table after ordering drinks. Then it took about 35 minutes to actually get our food, with individual orders being spaced out so half of us were waiting with our food for about 15 minutes before the rest of our party received theirs. Hopefully Sushi Train will get it together and get back to the great service I had gotten used to. I'm still giving them 4 stars because the majority of the service there has been excellent but I would change it if this continues. read more
