We've come here multiple times, and have never been let down. All of the staff welcomes everybody in with a smile, and seats them immediately. The actual restaurant is nice, clean, and authentic. I don't like sushi. That being said, I was here with a group recently and we decided to order lots of small plate items (mostly appetizers) that could be shared and NO sushi. So, this is essentially a review of our experience of their kitchen menu. I don't think I can recall everything we got, but it included the shrimp shumai, the spicy edamame, the pork gyoza (fried), the vegetable gyoza (steamed), the Kaki Fry, the Beef Negima-Yaki, the Age-Dashi Dofu, Chicken and Pork Katsu (Kami Katsu), the Tako Yaki, the chicken Kara Age, curried (powder, not sauce) chicken wings, jalapeno peppers with fish (Age?), and a dessert that would have passed for pumpkin pie. I think I enjoyed nearly all of the items, though some stood out better in my mind. The Kara Age was some of the best fried chicken I have had anywhere, especially with lemon squeezed on it. The gyoza were pretty good fried, and they were still juicy inside. I surprised myself with the octopus balls (Tako Yaki) as I normally wouldn't eat something like that. The jalapeno pepper thing (the name escapes me) was also great though I don't really know what it was. And, as the pumpkin pie dessert was my first of the fall season, I loved it. That being said, most of the items were fried, salty, covered in a mayo sauce, or a combination thereof. A healthy meal wouldn't consist of all of them together, and at the end of the night I was starting to wish we had ordered some rice just to put something simple in my stomach. Our server was super friendly, but the service was odd. After bringing out our food very quickly and staggered (thank you!) he disappeared for a while. Despite us telling him we were there to order a lot of food, we had to call him over several times to place another order. He never once asked if we wanted more drinks, and he only filled our waters during the last 15 minutes of the meal... likely after he overheard me discussing it. The place wasn't packed and there were other servers, so what he was doing is a mystery. All in all, though, it was an enjoyable evening. read more

Overall a lovely sushi restaurant. I have been to Sushi Tei twice, once with a large group and once with just one other person. For both groups service was relatively slow and it was hard to get the staffs attention when we needed something. Other than that however, the food is great. I've gotten a few different rolls and the James Bond roll in particular is incredible. They also have some good appetizers as well. When I went with a group they served us a plate of fresh fruit at the end which was a great way to wrap up our meal. The atmosphere is pleasant as well. Probably the best word to describe my experience would be: uneven. As I walked over to the sushi bar, there was traditional music in the background, wooden lattice decor, several Japanese prints on the wall - even a hidden room with a sort-of sunken table. But something was missing - and I found it as I looked through both the lunch menu and the regular menu. There was no nigiri listed (except for a "sushi platter," chosen by the chef), let alone tamaki or oshizushi. I had to ask, and was presented with a pencil and the à la carte menu. Even if this was simply a small oversight by the server, the main menu sushi selections were, in effect, sushi rolls only. That struck me as strange. The servers were pleasant enough, and mostly attentive. The multiple menu snafu ended with two different chefs preparing my lunch, with the maki delivered 10 minutes before the nigiri. This shouldn't have been a problem - the chefs were standing three feet away from each other in front of the bar (photo). To be fair, the maki chef may have been in training - I noticed that a third chef was overseeing his work. The soup was very good. The maki plating was uneven: eel-cucumber was exacting, if a bit large, but the spicy salmon was decidedly amateurish (photo), and made more prominent because there was no other decoration on the plate to distract from the haphazard creation. Despite the plating errors, the taste was not bad. The nigiri was executed much better, although I thought the unagi a bit small. I was pleased to see wasabi added atop each piece of sushi under the fish - too many local restaurants forget this step. And the tamago was not as sweet as I have had elsewhere, but I was pleased to find the texture told me it had been cooked very recently. First off the atmosphere here is just great. It has a very nice relaxing Japanese vibe going on. Great decor, nice ambient music, yet it's a nice quiet place to eat. I love going for lunch here during the week. The soups here are very flavorful. I consider the sushi and sashimi to be fresher than other local places. I find however, they don't have a big selection of cheaper sushi rolls. So if you're going for a 2 or 3 roll lunch combo your options are limited. The signature rolls they have are good but not great. Most of the rolls have tempora in them. I like the crunch don't get me wrong, but I don't want all my rolls crunchy. I enjoy that traditional raw fresh fish you find in sushi. Especially if I'm trying to keep it healthy. It's a good place for lunch, not sure if I'd come here for dinner. So I guess people have been finding out about Sushi Tei. The little neighborhood spot has since expanded and is now double its original size. There is now a much more prominent bar, booths exist in addition to regular tables, and there are some private rooms in the back. I'm still snobbish about my sushi and am reluctant to eat raw fish this far inland, and so many miles away from a major metropolitan area. But one of the things I have always enjoyed about Sushi Tei is how the kitchen offers a lot of Japanese comfort food. Once upon a time, ramen was hard to find in the Capital Region, and that's no longer the case. What I'm loving these days at Sushi Tei is the Kami Katsu. It's a hot appetizer from the kitchen of a deep fried pork cutlet, plated with a dab of hot mustard, a small pitcher of homemade sauce, and a little mortar and pestle filled with sesame seeds. The appetizer portion is significant. Currently, I'm trying to dial-in the perfect sized meal for a father and son outing to this neighborhood spot. I think it may be each of us getting our own bowl of clear soup, which is fabulous. Don't let the name deter you, or cause you to think for a moment that it's not packed with flavor. It's delicious. After that, splitting a seaweed salad (for our green vegetable) and an appetizer sized portion of deep fried pork, I think all it would take would be a few pieces of tamago (egg nigiri) and inari (tofu skin nigiri) to fill us up completely. We've been over ordering on our last few outings. One of those found us there on ramen day, and it had been a long time since enjoying a bowl of their classic soup. I couldn't resist. However, in the future, I think I will pass on that soup in favor of the Kami Katsu, because man, that stuff is good. Another outing we decided to try the vegetable tempura, but there were too many veggies in the mixture that the kid didn't enjoy. I ended up eating most of those, and they were delicious, but I really didn't want that much fried food. And even though the kiddo really enjoyed the gyoza, I wasn't the biggest fan of these steamed pork dumplings, and we both agree that we prefer the Kami Katsu. What can I say, he's got good taste. Sushi Tei is probably my favorite restaurant in the capital region. When I want sushi it's definitely my go to. They make good quality sushi and sashimi, and also have a great selection of creative and tasty rolls! However, sushi is not the only reason, nor, dare I say it, the best reason to come here. They have some really amazing and very delicious Japanese dishes, besides the sushi. One of my favorites being their ramen, which is only available on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesday. I also would highly recommend the Spicy Gyu Donburi, the Oyako Donburi, and the Volcano Salad. They also have a great party room, the Tatami (sp?) room. Wonderful for large groups, whether you're celebrating something special, or just out with a large group. I highly recommend reservations for the room though, it does get booked often. Over all you can't go wrong here, and I'm pretty sure if I could, I would eat here every day! read more

We have been going to Sushi Tei for many years. We were there on Valentine's Day weekend and had reservations for 14 people for a birthday party for 6:30. Some of the party arrived at 6:00 early and everyone was present at 6:30. We ended up waiting in the crammed seating room until 7:00. When food arrived in a large boat, the waitress could not handle the weight, so we helped, breaking a support piece from the boat and the waitress replied "Now I have to pay from my paycheck". Moving onto dessert we were surprised that they came out with candles on Japanese pastries that we did not order, which showed up on the bill! It almost felt like the place is about to go out of business due to their business practices. We will, of course, not be returning. read more

Incredible dinner at Sushi Tei tonight. To start, My husband and I shared the mini Udon soup with tempura shrimp and an order of the fried oysters which had a perfect crunchy panko crust. We ordered two rolls for our main course. The special roll called the Bumble Bee, lobster and spicy crab with jalapeño and avocado with thin slices of mango on the outside, special sauce drizzle. Super good ! But my favorite was the blossom roll :) texture and taste galore! Especially enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, friendly waiter and restaurant staff. We will definitely be back. read more

This is one of mine and my fiancé's favorite sushi spots in Albany. We have dined in and ordered take out from here many times. I just picked up an order today and it was delicious, just as it has been in the past! They do charge $1 extra for sauces (spicy mayo, eel sauce) which in my experience many other places do not. However, I did receive a free sushi roll (Mexican roll) with my order! :) This is the second time that we got the Mexican roll added on for free. I'm not sure if this offer is valid on certain days or for take out only or if the restaurant keeps track of your orders and awards it to you after a certain number of visits. My friend heard about this place at her work so she suggested we do a double date night. Wow what a menu. Lots and lots to choose from. Not being a huge sushi eater but I do enjoy it I was quite impressed. We started off with the beef wrapped onions, rock shrimp, shrimp steamed dumplings. All of that was amazing especially the rock shrimp. Then we had house and seaweed salad and soup. Wasn't too empresses w the ginger dressing. Needed a tad bit more flavor. And then I had the shaggy dog roll. I asked to add friend onion on top as lots of sushi places do. Super excited and when it came out I wasn't impressed w the crunches they didn't have any flavor but the roll it self was great. I'll def be back though. A little sneaky of a spot to get to, and thought it was closed when we arrived. Upon entering, we were greeted by an employee and they showed us to our table. It was pretty quiet but I've learned since coming up to Albany to visit, most places are pretty quiet. We ordered a volcano salad, a dinner box, and tonkatsu ramen since it was ramen day. Everything was actually pretty delicious. The volcano salad was a new thing on their menu but it was definitely worth it. A little pricey ($9.50) but can't complain because it was a substantial amount of what I think was salmon and/or crab, wrapped in avocado over a bed of seaweed salad. The dinner box was especially filling. It comes with soup, a roll (variety of choices), a main entree (I ordered hibachi steak), crabmeat salad, and a bowl of rice. Steak was cooked just the way I asked, and also came with a side of veggies. The tonkatsu ramen was plenty too! I've been here with friends several times and the service is great and so are some of the meal options that are not sushi. I've seen friends order the curry, katsu, ramen, several apps and all were delicious. Recently I came here with a friend that was GF and was slightly disappointed. We ordered a couple of specialty rolls, a volcano salad, and a sushi dinner to split. We talked quite a bit with the waiter about that my friend was GF so we wanted one of the special rolls with no crunch and we needed Tamari sauce. He even commented "good for us, for knowing crab stick is not GF" despite that he didn't warn us that the volcano salad has imitation crab and panko in it... While this doesn't reflect on the quality of the food or the overall service it was a little frustrating to eat a salad we couldn't share after we'd planned our order carefully. Also, at the very end of the meal I ordered a taiyaki dessert to go which took forever to make to the point I forgot I had ordered it while we were chatting... The taiyaki was extremely grease logged and I would not recommend getting it. The red bean ice cream that came with it in a side compartment of the takeout container was good though. I think this was a just an off experience here since service is normally good and so is the food. read more

The udon is exactly what all udon should strive for. They cook the noodles in the broth which enhances the flavor. The overall ambience is pleasant and great for friends gathering, dates, or just a casual place to grab lunch. First Japanese restaurant we've been to in the area since most spots looked fusion style although this one had some other Asian dishes. Menu is pretty big which I think is a negative aspect of a restaurant since it's too many options and dishes don't get to be mastered and perfected on (learned that from Irvine and Ramsey lol). So we came here bc I was in the mood for some Hijiki and Dr Josh Axe and Jordon keep telling us in their videos to eat fermented foods such as miso and top is actually nato beans which I've had before kind of slimey and strong smell. However, here they put the NATO beans in a roll and it was slimey not too stinky lol. The miso was good lots of seaweed and the Hijiki was bomb well dressed and flavorful oceany goodness. I would go back for these! The eel roll pretty standard and the glider veggie dish could be skipped. My husband got yellow tail with lemon and jalepeno sashimi which was refreshing. If they had a smaller focused menu like Omasake (think I'm spelling it write) they can easily make this a legit authentic Japanese spot and rule this non-existent One cuisine focus Only Japanese area. Sushi Tei is a relative small Japanese restaurant, but the interior design of the restaurant is quite charming in its unique way. The major decor that is used in the restaurant is bamboo, it gives a very Japanese vibe, if that make sense. They also have a sushi bar inside the restaurant, which is kind of a standard in Japanese restaurants in the area. I had the pork katsu and their Sunday special ramen (spicy version). I really liked the pork katsu, only a very thin layer and the right amount of bread crumbs covering the pork. It was very crispy and the pork was very soft inside. The Sunday ramen special was pretty decent, they had regular and spicy ramen. I had the spicy ramen and I thought it was a little too spicy. The hotness was kind of overwhelming and took over other flavors in the ramen. But aside that, the ramen was relatively authentic. I would definitely try the non-spicy ramen next time. I also had the Oyako Donburi, I believe they used the wrong type of chicken meat for it. It is supposed to be chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts as the meat, which made it kinda dry. However, the egg was cook at a pretty decently right timing, not overly cooked nor raw, leaving a very smooth entry to your bite. The dish overall was on the bland side, and would be better if the dish was more flavorful. read more

The only thing I like is their cool water bottle. I appreciate the chef filling my stomach, yet the food was far from being decent. I ordered prawn udori and sushi appetizer. The prawn tempura was drown in the sauce , making it half dry and half clammy, which tasted super weird. The sushi wasn't tasted fresh. The staff might be cleaning the kitchen or something throughout our dining. They created a big annoying noise of steam ejecting. I felt treated casually. Sushi Tei, which translates as "Sushi Shave" or "Sushi Air" or perhaps "Sushi Younger Brother" (http://www.kanjijapanese.com/en/dictionary-japanese-english/) is kind of hard to find, but once you do, you'll be "Sushi Stopping". Tucked in the back of an L-shaped strip mall in Guilderland, Sushi Tei promises some of the best sushi in Albany. Clean, small, low key interior (no stinky fish smells), gracious staff, quick service, and, most important, excellent sushi - sticky vinegar rice, not too sweet, plump fresh fish, rolls that don't deconstruct despite your lack of ability with chop sticks. And lovely salty miso soup - a good slurp! Foodie Friend ordered the Lunch Box Sushi ($12.50, I think) and I ordered the Sushi Deluxe Lunch special ($13.95). The Box was the better deal - cheaper, more food, more variety, but the Deluxe was very good if it's really the sushi you are after. I recently tried sushi tei for the first time and loved it! I went on a Tuesday and got the ramen special (which I believe is only offered on Tuesday's) and it was really good! I have been craving Some good Ramen for the longest time and this definitely hit the spot! I tried the spicy ramen bowl with beef which was slightly more spicy than I can handle but still very good!! The waitress did warn me that it was pretty spicy but I figured I'd try it..Next time I will just get hot sauce on the side so I can add it in myself and not make it too spicy. The portion size was pretty big I ended up splitting it with my bf. We also got some sushi rolls which were verryyy delicious. I recommend trying the Louisiana roll it was soo good! Finally, a sushi place I can say is good without adding the qualifier, "for the Capitol District". I was there for the anniversary special with $1 single pieces this month only, but the regular lunch prices aren't much more considering that you get soup or salad, which weren't offered with the $1 special. Slices of yellowtail, tuna and mackerel were fresh, fat and generous. Tobiko was served in a cylinder of toasted nori that was still warm. Aaah.... Most of the lunch crowd were having bento boxes, noodle dishes or specials other than the sushi, suggesting that getting your regular comfort dish is more important than saving a buck or two. A very good sign, as was the large proportion of Japanese being spoken by the clientele. Not being an Albanian, I have just figured out that this apparently remote section of Western Ave is actually right below the Crossgates Mall. So I can drop off my computer at the Apple store and have a bowl of udon next time while they're working on it. I can't give five stars because my husband as I are on a quest to find the best sushi place in the Capital Region. So, if you know me you know my story. Hubby and I love sushi. We've eaten at plenty of Sushi places. We tried Sushi Tei for the first time tonight. We loved it. It's a bit hard to to find, it's on the side of (as they say on their website) Cosimo's Plaza. It's a really cute little place. It's cozy but you're not bumping into each other. On one wall the decor seems a bit busy and the other wall is almost bare. Loved the lights hanging from the ceiling with script on them. The music was your traditional Japanese stringed instrument music. The food was wonderful. My husband ordered the miso soup and I ordered the mini udon soup. There's nothing mini about the mini udon soup. I expected to get a little bowl of soup like they usually give you miso soup in. Well, this was about four times bigger than what I was expecting. It was beautiful bowl too! The miso was good, but not as good as some others. The udon soup is officially now my favorite soup! It was fantastic! Then came the appetizer. My husband order the rock shrimp and I don't usually like spice but they were so tasty and the spice was just perfect. The when the sushi arrived it look perfect. It tasted even better. We had ordered the 007 roll and the Twilight roll. So guess you could say our sushi had a movie theme, even if I hate the whole Twilight thing. As my husband says "I'd like a license to kill the undead". The sushi was all delicious, fresh and flavorful. It was all melt in your mouth good. The service was good. We had two waitresses, one was much more out going than the other but they both got the job done and were pleasant to deal with. When we left we were so satisfied. I couldn't stop smiling.
