I have taken out food from here once, and been here twice. Not horrible, but definitely not great. There are other a lot of sushi places within 15 minutes of here that I would rather go to, so most probably will not be returning.
A few days after they first opened, I ordered one roll, just to see what their food was like (actually went to pick up pizza a few doors down, but was curious). The place looked nice, the roll (salmon avocado) was "okay."
My first visit was while my DD was at a dance lesson in that strip mall, and we were hungry, so we decided to give it a try (myself, DW, and Sister-in-Law (SIL)). My SIL is not a big sushi lover, so wanted to get something off the menu -- the restaurant has a rule that either everyone at the has the all-you-can eat *AYCE) menu, or no one (we usually go to Asahi, which is okay with someone ordering from the menu). [If you come in a large group, keep this in mind if some want the AYCE and some do not.] They did have a few non-fish/sushi items on their all-you-can eat menu, so all three of us ordered from it. We ordered a lot of different items to get a sense of their selection (especially me). Some of the stuff from the kitchen was actually very good, such as the Peking Duck, which is not on most AYCE menus (although a very, very, little piece - I should have ordered 2 or 3). I was looking forward to the baked mussels (also usually not on these type of menus), but the sauce they placed on it was not to my liking. The Red Snapper Teriyaki sounded interesting, and it sounded a lot better than it tasted. We also ordered other regular type items from this menu (especially the SIL), and nothing really stood out for us.
Now onto the sushi/sashimi/rolls - they were okay. I made the mistake of ordering rolls with the Mango (once again, different than most AYCE places), and was not happy with them. The sushi/sashimi we had was okay - it just did not taste very "fresh." I was happy that they had eel sushi (my one big complaint about Asahi), however, I did not like the consistency of the eel (too hard), and though the kabayaki (eel sauce) was to sweet. I did like the fact that they did have a nice small platter of fresh fruit as part of their desserts.
So far it was on "okay" experience, glad we tried it, but would probably not come again. When we finished the food, and before dessert, my DW got my DD from the dance class and brought her back to the restaurant. She did not eat anything, except did take a spoon or two of my DW's ice cream. When we got the check, they charged us for my DD. The waitress said she thought our DD was eating with us the whole time (we were one of three tables with people during the entire time and one other person at the sushi bar - you did not see that she was missing during the entire meal?) [She was not extremely attentive, even with so few people in the restaurant.] Yes, there are some that may say that she should not have had any "taste" and because of it, we are responsible for paying for a full meal - to that I say, what planet are you from? Maybe if she had the entire (small) dish of ice cream, or if she was an older kid, but at 6-7 years old, it's not reasonable. Yes, the manager did remove her charge, but it still left a bad taste in our mouths.
A few months later I had called in a prescription at the nearby pharmacy. When I went to pick it up, it was not ready, and had at least a half hour to kill. I did not want pizza, so decided to give this place another try (hey, the first time was soon after they opened, and may have had a few kinks - and figured I would give them the benefit of the doubt). I did order a few different things (including the udon soup, which was not bad, and tripled the order of the Peking Duck), but the fish used in the sashimi & rolls was still lacking that "fresh" taste. I had also sat at the sushi bar, so I had service from both the waiter, and the shokunin (the person making the sushi), and once again the place was not very busy, so had my various dishes served very quickly from both of them - and would give five stars for service during this visit.
I would not recommend this restaurant. read more
