I'd like to say that the service is great. Staff Jason (i believe is his name) is super friendly and attentive. My husband and i went during lunch, and if was dead. We were the only customers with doordash orders coming through. The furniture are quite old. All the seats/ booths were pretty much ripped and uncomfortable. We ordered one spicy salmon roll and the sashimi deluxe. Food came out in a timely manner. However the rice was cold as if it just came out of the fridge. The spicy salmon roll would've been excellent if fresh rice was used. The sashimi cut was very generous. However a few pieces of the fish were either dry with no taste or it was extremely fishy. The miso soup was bland and tofu was quite big. I'm used to soft tofu but the soup had firm tofu so it tasted weird. The ginger dressing for the salad tasted like spicy mayo with chunks of ginger. Definitely different from normal salad any sushi place would offer. We weren't aware of the owner change. But the food is definitely different and not the same. Overall we left with a decent bill. I should have turned around when I encountered a curtain of vinyl vertical blinds in order to enter Sushi Pirate. From our table adjacent to the sushi chefs I observed way too much filth for comfort. Again, I should have turned around and left. But being the eternal optimist, we stayed. We ordered one California Roll as an appetizer and two hot meals: Pork Katsu and Tempura Shrimp. The only dish I recommend is the Tempura Shrimp. The California Roll was disappointing, as the rice was too hard/crunchy.....not at all what I have experienced in the past. I have to agree with another yelpers review that said "I've had better sushi from a supermarket." The pork in the Pork Katsu was very very tough. And the rice on the side was similarly hard like the sushi rice. The only dish worth ordering was the Tempura Shrimp. It was not greasy and included a large array of fried vegetables. Food carts laying around with uncooked meals, so much stuff in the building like someone lives here, kids everywhere coloring on the floors when you walk in and listening to videos so loud with profanity. Warning: there's a step down into the restaurant that's camouflaged by a curtain over the door. The interior is run down and it smells like fish (never a good sign for a sushi restaurant). There is a $15 credit card minimum, which the restaurant nicely waived for me. There were at least 3 sushi chefs sitting around looking bored. I got vegetable gyoza and the tempura asparagus roll. Both were pretty good. The rice in the sushi roll was particularly good. $9 before the tip - a steal! I don't know that I would ever eat at the restaurant because I was put off by the interior, but I would get take out again. read more

Quick recommendation: don't order sushi, but everything else is great! Details: I've eaten here 3 times. Once in the restaurant and twice as take-out. I've ordered sushi twice, and won't again. I'm from MPLS and have a somewhat-higher standard of sushi, and theirs is fairly squishy and not fresh tasting (I've tried both with fish and vegetarian and neither are really worth it in my opinion). HOWEVER, for a Japanese restaurant in a smallish town in the Midwest, their hibachi is GREAT and their apps are good as well. I order their vegetarian hibachi which comes with 2 large pieces of tofu, tons of veggies, fried rice, salad, and soup for ~$10... such a deal!! Their crab rangoons are pretty standard / good, same with their egg rolls, seaweed salad, etc. The restaurant is quite cute, too, so I would recommend eating in if you have the chance. I should have anticipated this when I walked in and saw the menu was a mix of Japanese, Chinese and Pizzas like "Kung Pao Chicken", but this was unfortunately one poor experience after another. 20 minutes to get a waitress to take a drink order. Another 10 to get 3 sodas, a beer and a hot tea, and then another 15 for someone to take our order. The chefs were busy filling orders (takeout and delivery, maybe?), but it took an inordinately long time to deliver our entrees, and it wasn't until moments before our entrees arrived that they seemed to realize we hadn't yet gotten our soup and salad. Moving on to the actual quality of the entrees, they went all the way from mediocre to poor. Perhaps the largest disappointment was the Oyakodon. The most generous thing I can say about it was that it was edible. What it wasn't, was anything resembling what someone who has actually eaten Oyakodon would recognize as such. (1) It had either a pre-formed, fried chicken patty at its heart, or perhaps they had it confused with Katsudon and it was a fried pork cutlet?* (2) It was not at all moist. It was not onions and chicken cooked in a broth of any sort, much less the typical mix of shoyu, mirin, dashi, etc. It was a fried patty, cut into strips and served in a hard-cooked omelette-style egg -- a brown, crispy disc. No onions at all, no sauce or broth to soak into the rice. Served on top of what I think was long grain rice, with a generous amount of bulldog sauce. *On the off chance that the order went in wrong, and you thought you were making Katsudon, you still missed the mark by a country mile. I've spent far more time on this than it likely deserves, but I believe I've managed to determine what it was that I found so off-putting that I sent the dish back. This is supposed to be Japanese comfort food. It's the "meatloaf and mashed potatoes" of the "Japanese Diner", if you will. It's roughly 6 ingredients, can come together in 10-12 minutes (assuming you already have a large bowl of steamed rice available), and it's nearly impossible to screw up unless you have absolutely no idea what it is you're making in the first place. ~1/2 cup of dashi if you've got it (I use hondashi granules at home) but chicken stock or even water would work, a splash of soy sauce, a couple tablespoons of sake, maybe a tablespoon of mirin, a pinch of sugar. Toss in some thinly sliced onion. Simmer for 3-5 minutes until the onions soften and begin to take on some color. Then toss in some bite-sized pieces of chicken thigh, and simmer until cooked through 3-4 minutes. Finally, scramble 1-2 eggs in a bowl, pour over the onion, chicken and broth, cover and let the egg poach/steam for 30-60 seconds. Slide the entire thing over a bowl of steaming hot rice. If you want to be fancy, maybe some sliced green onion as a garnish. What I got was the equivalent of "meatloaf and mashed potatoes" that delivered a piece of pounded cube steak, and potatoes that had been boiled, and then mashed with a fork with no butter, cream, etc. Some of the right ingredients, sort of similar to the form if you squint really, really hard, but doesn't scratch any of those "meatloaf and mashed potatoes" itches even remotely. If you have no experience with real Japanese food, and no expectations, you might find it enjoyable. But I was singularly disappointed to get something that is so incredibly easy to make that was so much of a departure from what it should have been. I'm sorry I didn't think to snap a picture. If anyone from Sushi Pirate should be interested, what you delivered had more in common with Omurice (a rice-filled omelette) than Oyakodon. Decent sushi place that was within walking distance from my hotel. I ordered seaweed salad, an Alaskan roll and a Serenade roll. The Serenade comes with mango on top which is not something I'd normally order but thought I'd step out of my bento box since work was paying. It was fantastic! Considering there are not many sushi options in this area, you can't go wrong here. The total for my dinner was $25 so the prices weren't outrageous either. We shared the American Dream (shrimp tempura, eel, avocado, cucumber, and eel sauce) which was absolutely delish and very fresh tasting- usually I find that there is too much rice in sushi but all the ingredients were well balanced in amounts and in taste. I ordered Katsu Don (pork over rice- came with miso soup and salad), and my boyfriend got Chicken Udon Soup. The portions were huuuge- I'm a big eater and was only able to get through half of my pork dish (granted we also ordered 8 pieces of sushi...of which I ate 5 of). But still, portions are generous! The curry of the Katsu Don was well spiced and not too thick nor thin. My boyfriend's soup had a very subtle taste, but I thought it was the good kind of subtle- it wasn't salty so you could actually drink the soup at the end. The staff is very kind, polite, attentive, and warm. I liked them a lot. We've eaten here a few times since living in the area and we've still only had their take-out. They have an online ordering form, which is extremely simple and convenient to use. Food has always been on time and employees are very friendly. We've dropped the rating from our previous review because the food quantity/quality does not match the premium price. Food here is expensive, the quality is average, and the portions are very small. Their rolls are about half the size of other establishments. When we first ordered their Maki Tray, we were given soup and salad. Now, despite being listed under their "Sushi Entrees: Served with miso soup, green salad," they refuse to provide the appetizers because its a "mistake on the menu and it shouldn't be listed under Entrees." Last night, I made the mistake of ordering their Sashimi Regular, "15pcs Chef's Choice - No Substitution," and was served 3 sticks of imitation crap meat as part of the entree. I literally can go to Festival and buy 2pounds of surimi for that price (the entree is $22, so those three pieces of "fish" cost me about $5) and just plop it on a plate. I got takeout from here on a weekday for lunch. They have a pretty extensive menu and pretty nice lunch specials. I got some "spicy" rolls and my special came with three pieces of sashimi/sushi. The quality of the sushi is not good, I get for a small town, what do you expect? But still, none of my spicy rolls were spicy AT ALL. Even the wasabi that was included was not hot. The presentation of the rolls was also not too good, Rice was falling off the wrap was not sufficient also falling apart. I additionally got vegetable tempura and there was some type of squash included that STILL HAD THE SEEDS INTACT, I've never had tempura where I had to immediately find a napkin or something to spit seeds out. The crab Rangoon was decent and my meal included a salad which I think had ginger dressing but the ginger flavor was really minimal and it was actually sweet. I really wanted to like this place but most things I got were subpar/ disappointing. The quality of the ingredients really needs to improve. We went in summer and they were definitely playing Christmas music. Gives a strong "this place is actually an abandoned restaurant but we're illegally serving food here anyway" vibe. Our server was nice, told us some crazy stories about his life. He told me he would make me a mixed drink he created with "every alcohol" in it. Promised it would be great. Sushi in Wisconsin...it's very hit and miss. So many times I'd find a place with great reviews on Yelp! and go there and be miserably disappointed. Others may have not the greatest ratings and I had no issue with them whatsoever. So it is the case with Sushi Pirate. It was pouring rain at 1:40 on a Monday in April when we visited and we were about the only people in the place, so the problems that have shown up in other reviews due to their being busy would not apply. That said, the food arrived promptly and was very good. There was no fishy smell in the restaurant, which is the first thing I check for in a sushi joint. If you smell fish, leave immediately! The entrance tripped me out cuz it appeared it has two door but could only enter through the right. Than you have to walk past these big plastic blinds which made me feel weird as it slapped itself across my body as I entered. This place seems like a real family built restaurant because there were items like gadgets laying around and there was even this kid running around. Most people would give this place a 3 but I liked how I imagined this place being run by a family and had to give it 4 stars. The food was filling, but not stuffing. I ordered 2 rolls and was glad they put the rolls on the same plate. The size of the plate was interesting because I have never seen round plates used for sushi. I really enjoyed the flavor of the soft shell crab. This has been the first sushi place I have been to that has offered that as an appetizer option. That was also a PLUS for me. The sauce that came with it was fancy but ehh. When I asked for Siracusa or sauce, the workers went to get it right away! The sushi was fresh and good. I love how the table was set up with everything needed prior to arriving in a formal manner. I have to give a shoutout to sushi pirate. This is only my second time coming here but they are, by far, the most diverse in their flavors when it comes to sushi in the la Crosse area. The wait was odd, but you could easily waive down the hostess or waiter when you were ready. But they were very attentive and have you enough space so as not to intrude on your date. It's rare for me to actually write negative reviews because I don't generally feel strongly enough to do so. However, I do unfortunately feel it necessary in this case. I ordered three rolls for carry out-- avocado cucumber, AAC, and the yam tempura. I understand a couple of things with this order: 1) it's not a fancy or complex order. In fact, it's quite boring; 2) it's hard to keep temperatures perfect in carry out orders. Here are the issues I had: 1) there was entirely too much rice on every roll, especially in comparison to the fillings. For being veggie rolls, they were pretty pricey and I would have expected more from them. 2) all 18 pieces were crammed into a single to-go box. I'm all about reducing waste, but having my warm yam tempura roll so tightly packed next to my cold AAC roll had an unpleasant effect: a warm, not refreshing AAC roll. 3) I arrived a good 10 minutes prior to when my order was estimated to be done, to find it already sitting on the counter. I arrive early for carry out so I can have a better chance of a fresh meal. In short, the rolls were fine, but I definitely won't order carry out again. Because it's one of the only sushi places in the area, I'll likely give it a try for a sit down meal at some point. I hope that provides a better experience. read more

More people need to go here and keep this place going. Yes, the have some trouble with service but they can't keep a full staff when they struggle breaking the curse of this location (having been formerly Yoko's). The weird Pirates of the Caribbean theme might make some people cringe but sitting underneath Johnny Depp's mural, personally, makes me giggle. The decommissioned hibachi tables covered with tablecloths is even a little more lame but...you work with what you've got. The food...A+ and not just for effort. It's fantastic. Don't like sushi but your date does? There's other options like teriyaki chicken or sushi rolls without fish, etc. I highly recommend anything with BBQ eel. Sounds gross? You'll be surprised at how good it is. Pretty much anything with a serpent or reptilian name you should try (Dragon, Godzilla). And it's not expensive for what you get. A small roll can be up to eight pieces for $5 and a large roll $15 at 10-12 pieces. Also, if you like seafood soup, there's is great. Sushi - Sad. Rice is stale and flavorless. Fish is not fresh and raw, rather hard like when you refrigerate it for hours. I judge a sushi place from my staple roll the Spicy Tuna (and I also ordered 'At Worlds End') and both the taste were subtle and boring. Nothing special to distinguish the difference between these two rolls except the jalapeño in the 'At Worlds End.' Presentation was nothing like what the pictured showed (At Worlds End). Pricing - Competitive and high, since this was only one of the few established sushi places in town. I foresee it to go down or for Sushi Pirate to lose customers with the new sushi place opened now, Shogun. Staff & Service - We did show up late but they were not even busy, the waiter was impatient and asked us if we were ready to order three times in less than 5 minutes of sitting down.
