I had to review this place because it has not been getting love from reviewers. This is definitely not a fancy Chinese place but it is a buffet that serves decent food at a good price! They were constantly bringing out hot and fresh food throughout our time there. Service was great and friendly. The place itself is outdated and older- but the food was good overall and a great value! I would be back and I think it's great for families! read more

Food was decent -lots to choose from I feel they keep the stock low on food but still plenty to get on your plate Variety of desert & salad bar Well priced at around $11 for dinner buffet read more

Best deal in La Crosse. I have been in the area for a rotation for professional school and this has been my go to restaurant. Very affordable and always bringing out fresh, hot food. read more

The buffet always has hot and fresh food and is affordable. The buffet has several food options to choose from and the dessert options are also good. read more

Amazing service! We had biked there and forgot the bike lock. My friends asked to bring the bikes inside so they would-not get stolen. They were very nice and considerate about it. Good hygiene changed the tongs of the food every 10-15 minutes. Along with waiting on tables very quickly. Very good food, lots of variety. For a pretty good price. The ambiance was very calm and pleasant as soft music plays. Its a prefect place for talking with friends. read more

This place is pretty good if you are craving American Chinese food, I would actually give it closer to 3.5 stars. Even though it is a buffet they do offer carry out options as well. I've never been inside this establishment but did get the opportunity to try their food via take out. I decided to order their Kung Pao Chicken lunch special (without peanuts). The chicken was fried and then tossed in a spicy sauce with some vegetables. The sauce had a good amount of kick to it, but it wasn't overwhelmingly spicy. The meal came with rice, a can of soda, and of course the standard fortune cookie. Their lunch specials in general run around $7.00, so pretty affordable, and portion sizes are generous. Aside from the carrots being undercooked, overall it was enough to satiate any cravings I had for Chinese take out. read more

China Buffet - Kung Pao Chicken (No Peanuts) - Chinese Near Me - La Crosse, Wisconsin

What can I say....This is my first time reviewing China Buffet, but it's a good thing to review now so I can give a full perspective of my experiences. First, when I first started going to China Buffet in La Crosse, it was pretty good. The food was usually fresh and plenty to choose from. The staff was also friendly too. All of a sudden, things changed. Don't get me wrong, COVID changed a lot of people and a lot of businesses. This place started going down even before then. I gave this place many chances and went at different times to see if that made a difference. I'll explain what I mean by all of this. First, I noticed the staff isn't that friendly anymore. I used to think the host was super friendly, but Joe she isn't really friendly anymore and that makes me sad. The other guy in there who sometimes hosts isn't that friendly anymore either. I boil this all down to them being burnt out. They work everyday except Tuesdays when they are closed. Here's a problem....Of my theory of going in at different times, it was because the last 3 times my husband and I went, there were a couple of items that were constantly out, especially lo mein noodles. Every time after that, including our last visit yesterday, they were out of lo mein noodles. Our usual time to visit was after 4pm and they close at 9pm. We went yesterday at about 12:45, and they were low on EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING. You walk in, and you're expecting to get food that is full and hot, and then get disappointed because things aren't fresh, and they are low. Sometimes food will be stale and sit there forever. I watched the older woman who is like the mother or something, walk right past the sweet and sour sauce that had French fries floating in it, and she didn't even remove them. The food is always look warm at best, unless they freshly make a batch, and then it comes out. When they did finally start to bring out more items, it was one at a time every 20 minutes. Most of the stuff sat the way it was when we first got there! I couldn't believe it when J saw such depletion of items and the quality yesterday. I was appalled, and yet you're paying 10 bucks for lunch snd 14 for dinner? It's insane to me! I feel like they CAN'T maintain this restaurant, and it's because they offer too many times that they can't keep stocked and they don't have the staff to keep it up!!! Downsize your food!! Keep your "staple" foods out there everyday like lo mein noodles, beef and pepper steak, general tso's chicken, sweet and sour chicken, crab rangoon. You're doing too much, and it is literally KiLLING your business! On top of that, you have to worry about takeout too??? Either be a buffet with minimal items, or just be a take out only restaurant with specific items to choose from. You're hurting yourselves and it reflects in your attitudes as well! If you had the staple foods out there, you could alternate every other day with items that are not normally out there, or throw in an extra item or two on those alternate days. I've seen too many businesses do too much and they get in over their head. That's what happened to this place. The sign out front that flows at night has said "INA" instead of China Buffet for months and months, if not a year. Why isn't this fixed? I wish the best for this place, but I don't feel we will be back, and that makes me sad.... read more

Food was old and cold. Got several shrimp dishes. After seeing none of the shrimp were cleaned or deveined I called over the server and she said that was normal. That is not normal to not clean the shrimp, it totally turned me stomach and did not eat anything else. That has been my go to place for several years. No more I am done. read more

Awful. Crab Rangoons had no crab in them And the cream cheese and an odd, light taste. The sweet and sour sauce was watery and nearly tasteless. the shrimp with lobster sauce had fake crab in it and the shrimp were not cleaned. won't be back. read more

Its a good place with people but the food its self is alright, some of the food taste good but some food doesn't taste like anything. Overall its good you just gotta get the right food. read more

Pretty standard Americanized Chinese fare, and honestly the best in the area that I've tried (and I've tried a few). Have been going here for years and honestly prefer their buffet to any of the other "Chinese" places around here and would rather go there than get takeout from those places. Like any other buffet, when you go matters with regards to how often and how quickly food is replenished. I'm honestly confused about the people speaking poorly of the staff. I've been going to this same buffet for over a decade and never once had a bad experience with the staff. I imagine like anyone else they match the energy of the people they're interacting with. read more

This was terrible I'm so sorry ... this is just not good at all ... all the meat dishes were over cooked With no seasonings ... the deserts were stale I'm sad .... so unsatisfying... and then they literally waited until most of the dishes were gone to bring out a new batch . All of them look like they hate their job! I was uncomfortable eating there I couldn't tell if it was clean or not ... I shouldn't feel like that a buffet . I will never return ... definetly a bad experience for me read more

The food on the buffet was not hot but lukewarm, and not very flavorful or fresh. All of the chicken seemed pretty low quality. But the atmosphere was nice and the staff were quick to bring anything you asked for. read more

I was charged $7.50 for the same take out container that high school students receive, but they only have to pay $5. It is the same container, and the same food, that they receive. It's borderline age discrimination....I have to pay more simply because of my age. read more

The food here is delicious as far as buffets go. I have been to many buffets across the country, and the quality in majority of them simply do not compare to the superior quality and taste they have at China Buffet. Staff is friendly, the restaurant has great ambiance and the price cant be beat. When i visit from New York City coming on business to Lacrosse WI this is my go to place for lunch with the co-workers. Should definitely give this place a go. You cant beat the good quality and price!!! read more

Decent Chinese Buffet with a cornucopia of Americanized dishes. Smaller than a few that I've been to and missing crab legs and soft serve. Things they do well: Chicken dishes. Their General Tsos has actual meat in it; it's not just a large ball of fried breading that some places serve. Their unbreaded poultry was tasty as well. Their sushi doesn't contain fancy ingredients, but the rice is cooked exceptionally well. Things that need work: The chef was heavy handed with the salt content in their Fried rice; it was inedible, even mixed with veggies from other dishes in an attempt to dilute the salt. Crab Rangoons need crab in the mixture and need to be warm. The restaurant and serving area is clean. The employees are friendly and hard working. The place is really dark with only one small, covered window. Price was $9.50 for the weekend lunch (I assume this is the price for the weekday dinner) and a drink was a buck extra; pretty standard for the area and cheaper than other cities I've been to. Even though I didn't order a drink, they still charged me for one. When I pointed this error out, they corrected it, but hesitantly. Make sure to check your bill! Overall, a good place, but nothing exceptional. I've had better, but so far, this is the best Chinese Buffet in the La Crosse area. My wife wouldn't want to eat here, so it will be a place that I visit on my own when I have a craving and don't feel like cooking. When she wants Chinese in La Crosse, I'll be cooking it at home. read more

Good spicey sour soup, but as for the rest of buffet..COLD, some very cold, some lukewarm. I don't know how they pass health inspections. When we went to pay bill we were asked how it was. I said cold. He thought I was talking about the room temperature. We have given the place many chances...no more. read more

Ok so, China Buffet is TERRIBLE!!! DO NOT EAT THERE!!!! The sodas Suck, the food is old, and Service is terrible. Me and my friend went there for my birthday and I was eating the orange chicken and noticed green stuff in it. then when I asked for a lemonade they gave me orange juice and told me they don't have "American Lemonade" DISGUSTING! And my friend asked for our bill and they said they could not give us the bill until we spent 30 more minutes there. I then laid don't 30$ and left. DONT GO HERE! read more

Took my nephew there for his birthday lunch at his request. Took him home afterwards stomach ill and very disappointed. He rated the place a 4.5 when he was 8. He's 14 now and his new rating is a 2.5. He even said things tasted probably even worse than animal food! No joke! All of our food tasted and felt like it was the prevoius nights over-fried left-overs. Who ever is in charge of quality control certainly doesn't give a damn what you're feeding your family. read more

The buffet food was nice and hot and their hot & sour soup is the best I've had. Buffet items range in quality and taste. The coconut shrimp is 90% batter and very disappointing. read more

This is your typical chinese buffet restaurant. We always visit China Buffet every time we come to La Crosse--I don't know why we love it so much. Sometimes they'll have unexpected dishes out on the buffet, like Japanese chicken-really good. But for the most part, it's the same every time we go. Nothing special. read more

Wow, was it noisy! We were there at 3:30 PM so the place was deserted, but the staff and their kids were making so much noise that we were quite distracted. One young man (11?) Was yelling and wining and making himself so obnoxious that it overshadowed the experience. The food was ok and the selection was good, but the service was lousy. I will not be back. read more

The customer service is horrible. I was charged extra when I went in to eat and the man at the cash register told me that with cards they charge more, which made no sense at all to me. Their food is good, but their service is horrible. They're rude and rush you when you eat. read more

Pretty good Chinese Buffet food. Sushi rolls were great and plentiful. Egg rolls were definitely not the usual frozen crap, the cabbage actually had a bit of crunch left, they were quite good. Loved the mushrooms. No complaints, visited twice within about a week's time. read more

Food is fairly standard Chinese buffet. Greasy, lots of fried stuff and globs of meat in salty brown sauce. Not good.

Awful. Our sodas were watered down to the point where there was almost no carbonation. Maybe a way to save money but it doesn't make customers happy. The main chinese buffet staples were ok like general tso and egg drop soup. Other than that the attempts at other dishes were dissapointing. Also many of the dishes we grabbed already had stains on them. Very unimpressed and would not recommend. read more

Always enjoyed eating here. Good food. We went a few nights ago, it was late so they were getting close to closing. We were a bit uncomfortable because 1 of the staff stood and watched us eat. Everytime we emptied a plate she was right there to grab it. I understand wanting to clean up and close but she could of found something to do besides stand 5 ft. away and watch us like hawks as she leaned against the table. read more

Generally wouldn't say anything, but after reading the poor reviews we decided to give it a try and almost instantly regretted it. After dipping a few things in the sweet and sour sauce we noticed a large black hair. We stopped eating and went to pay when the lady at the register offered us $1 off our meal. Thanks, but no thanks. read more

China Buffet - a bowl of soup with a spoon sticking out of it - Chinese Near Me - La Crosse, Wisconsin

Food was devoid of vegetables for the most part, fried and greasy. Someone was cleaning the aquarium and dumping the water out the front door while we were eating; less than appetizing! Sesame balls were my favorite part. read more

They get a 5/5 as far as Chinese buffets go. Standard fare, but food is always warm and the place is always clean. They were the only Chinese buffet in town that got NO health code violations for 2014. read more

Food was good and not super expensive. Only bad thing was there was 17 kinds of chicken and nothing else, like pork or beef

I have never eaten at the buffet, but it appears to be standard Chinese Buffet. I do LOVE their take-out. It is cooked fresh and is always very good. I like the chicken with broccoli and eggrolls are 2/$1 which is an AMAZING price! read more

The food is good BUT it is often COLD! I don't understand why they cannot keep their food HOT. We have given them many chances - just cannot do the place any longer. I don't know how it passes health inspections as far as food temperatures. read more

This makes the 2nd time I've ordered food from this place. They literally do not know how to make fried rice. Think they used yellow food coloring as it was not fried and pretty much yellow rice with a few peas in it. Disgusting. Ordered a simple chicken chow mein and waited forever. The chicken looked like it had been frozen and they sliced it off and then stir fried it. Couldn't tell it was chicken, pretty much mystery meat for flavor. I will never go here again. The best thing I can say about the place is that it's clean, just don't buy the food. This place should go out of business. If there was a star with a minus in front of it, I would have clicked that. Truly a shameful example of Asian cuisine. read more

of all the Chinese restaurants in town, China Buffet is my favorite. It may not be the greatest food, but it's good and I'm never disappointed. I haven't had a bad experience there yet, unlike other Chinese restaurants in town. read more

Not "A-OK". I've had better. My parents have been coming here for years and therefore so have I but less and less often. The menu is as tired as some of the people working there. They need to add some new items. The food is often not warm enough. They used to serve crab legs but no longer do. They used to have some of the best chicken wings in town but started serving drumsticks instead. They don't serve egg drop soup often enough. Their dessert bar really needs refreshing. It's boring. All of the baked goods/pastries taste like they were frozen and thawed out - not fresh. They always serve the same flavor of double jello. I could go on. One thing I like are the breaded shrimp but sometimes they substitute a cheaper, inferior variety. Here's a thought: Why not introduce some authentic dishes instead of all of the mediocre Americanized pseudo-Chinese cuisine? They could learn something from the other Chinese buffet in La Crosse - "Super Buffet". It's much better and you get more for your money. read more
