This restaurant has a low yelp review but I do not understand why! I get takeout from China Star very often and have never had a bad experience. Honestly I've been coming here for over a decade I'd say. The food is always hot and yummy. No complaints!! read more

Food is great...when you get everything that you ordered. Sadly, the last few times I have placed pickup orders they always forget something (usually the ragoons or egg rolls that I really wanted in the first place). There only solution to the situation is to have me come all the way back (40 minutes one way) to pick them up. Since it has been a repetitive issue I will not be ordering from here again. read more

I ordered Pork Lo Mein, and paid extra for mushrooms. If you like a pound of noodles, a few tiny little pork pieces, a few tiny mushroom pieces at an exra cost, this is your place. My cost: $20.95. For noodles. 95% noodles. Go somewhere else. Like China Buffet, or Burger King, or Wendys. At least, when you order a 1/4 pounder with cheese, you get a 1/4 pounder with cheese. And China Buffet? Everything you could want. Or eat. And, good luck with showing up on time and getting your food. Chances are (about 80% of the time) they haven't even started cooking it yet. I placed an online order around 4:00 pm for 6:00 pm pick-up. When I got to China Star a few minutes early, the order hadn't been started and I waited 20 minutes. I couldn't find a complete online menu (there are names of dishes, but not descriptions) so I couldn't order anything I wasn't already familiar with. The food is ordinary--tastes not much different from what I can get at the grocery store hot food area. The restaurant, which seems to cater to carry out, was busy, so maybe I hit an off night, but to place an order that far in advance and not even have it started will not make me return. read more

So we ordered our usual, noodles and then chicken with vegetables. We got this the other night and things seemed fine til just now. I took a bite of the chicken and felt something pretty hard. When I pulled it out of my mouth...it was a piece of CARDBOARD! Like a legit piece of actual cardboard. Like how do you get this big of a piece into the food without knowing? Needless to say this will be it for awhile. Last time they messed up the order but made it right w/a partial refund, but this just made me lose my appetite. Best Crab Ragoons ever and very good value on meals! Not the fanciest place but the food makes up for it.

Food is great, my boyfriend and I always crave this place... I hate when places put fake crab in their won tons, China star does it right and just uses cream cheese.. so tasty. And I love the general Taos chicken. Delivery takes a bit but I don't mind since they're going all way across town. read more

Ordered our food at 11:30 am......it has been over two hours later and our food is STILL NOT HERE. we have called 4 TIMES and each time they said "it should be almost there"/"its on its way"/"ten minutes" . Eventually we just said forget it and to just give us our money back and they told us that they dont do refunds. This has been the worst ordering expierence I have ever had, and normally i dont post on yelp.....but I wouldnt recommend this place to anyone......not even my worst enemy. The food is adequate for Chinese in La Crosse but twice they have messed up m delivery order and not included everything I ordered. Tonight, I was missing an egg roll, and the broccoli in the beef and broccoli was barely cooked. After waiting an hour for the food to be delivered, it arrived and was lukewarm at best. I stopped in for lunch TO GO, the charge on my card was 6.70. I left a CASH tip in the jar. I have just received my bank statement. The charge was increased to 10.70 -- so they clearly added a $4.00 tip because they felt like they deserved it? Never again. I have been eating China Star for years now. Usually get delivery and orange / general tsos chicken. Food is always decent, crab Rangoon are good too. Delivery does usually take 45 minutes but if you order carry out usually ready in about 10 minutes. Sometimes the meal is better and fresher than others. I guess it depends on how quick they dish it up and how long it sits before you can dive in. read more

Ok, long time but it's Friday nitht so, Ok. 7:00 no food 7:15 no food 7:30 no food 7:45 no food, I made toast. 8:05 and the delivery guy is knocking on the door. As a transplant from Chicago, I've been looking for a while for a good asian takeout place. I've given China Star multiple chances, but the food is just not up to par. First of all, fried rice is not yellow. It should never be the neon yellow that China Star's rice displays. It also features peas and carrots for some reason, which takes me back to my kindergarten days. As well as the color and sad vegetables, the rice is bone dry. I could probably use it to exfoliate my face. The meat in the fried rice is...creepy. This is a disgrace to fried rice everywhere. Second, the last time I ordered it, I found a rather large, sharp bone in my chicken. I'm thankful it didn't cut anything open in my mouth. It was a little larger than a quarter and was shaped like a shark tooth. I found other smaller bone fragments in the meat as well, with every order I receive from them. These are even scarier to find. I've ordered their General Tso's before, and on the menu, it's labeled as being "spicy". The food was not spicy. I ordered it again, asking it to be made spicy. I saw on the foam container that they had marked it to be spicy. The chicken was most certainly not any spicier. During this order I also saw that they offered a "hot oil" as a side, assuming this is to make your food spicier (since the kitchen certainly failed at that). The hot oil is a reddish oil with red pepper flakes that sit on the bottom. It has absolutely no flavor. I could drink that whole cup of "hot" oil, and there would be no heat. I don't know why they think this is effective. Sometimes I want to be in a little pain when I eat. There is no pain in this food (except for the previously mentioned bone fragments). They also don't send any hot mustard packets in the food. I don't know if this is a regional thing, back in Illinois, it's common to get hot mustard with takeout. I suppose I must keep my own. There is no flavor in this food. It is not worth the money. But I guess I can't expect much in a place where nobody has tastebuds and people sweat when they put ketchup on anything. read more

I normally love this place but tonight they have upset me. I placed an order online for delivery at 5. They were 20 minutes late. I do not live nearby and did not realize until I got home that I had the wrong food. When i called, they wanted me to bring it back to get a refund or to get my correct order. I live 45 minutes away. They wanted me to bring the food back on Monday. Today is Friday. I have never had a place say this in my life. It will be a long time before i order for a night delivery from them again. They are 100 times better during the day. Night orders suck. read more

Portions are huge. The restaurant was very busy when I placed my order. Chicken and broccoli is good. Hot and sour soup needs to be way way more sour. It's actually very bland. Fried dumplings are crispy and filled with beef, not bad. I would eat here again because it's close by. read more

I Love China Star for the delicious food they prepare and the size of the portions for such little money! The dedicated staff works hard to satisfy their guests. The crab rangoon was not very crab-tasting and was strangely sweet. I was going to eat there, but there are a couple of small, janky tables, the rest of the dining area is storage and a place for the family of the owners to hang out. I love AmChinese food, so I order General Tso Chicken, crab rangoon and egg rolls at every Chinese place I can. This place has a darker GT sauce that isn't as sweet as I usually see. Not very spicy either, but it rarely is. Chicken breading was crunchy and stayed yummy even as leftovers. Chicken meat was mostly good; only a few gristly chunks. Crab rangoon was basically just cream cheese; VERY sweet. Egg rolls are nothing special, but they were crunchy and hot. S&S is extra. I did pick-up and it was ready in 20 minutes. read more

After my order was placed I waited about an hour. After an hour I called back to check on my order, the women on the other end said the delivery guy left "10 minutes ago" well I ended up waiting another hour for my food to arrive. Time and time again I try to like this place but this was the last straw. My husband convinced me to try them one more time. I decided on the Mongolian Beef but there was one giant problem- it was 75% onions. I'm all about having onions in my dish but if I wanted Mongolian onions that's what I would have ordered.
