There are many sushi spots in the Dobbs and ardsley area but sushi mikes is pretty much the most popular and well known. I will admit that their lunch specials and even regular prices are a bit higher than average and even higher than nearby venues but the sushi quality is lit. Ok, been 15 years since my last visit. This place has always been highly recommended by so many... This place isn't any worse or better than any other sushi place in River towns or Hudson river side of Westchester. I don't know what all the hoopla is about. Winner of "best of Westchester" ? Not much to say about what the "Best" is about. Most appetizers are from a frozen package. I asked and was told by the "owner" or "head sushi chef". Sushi....... Good fish selections. It seems fresh... But sushi is the rice not the fish as many foodies know. This "sushi" rice does not have any taste it's just some cheap sticky rice with no seasoning on the rice ( come on give it rice vinegar and sugar at least.) Sorry to say it's just another "American" sushi place that caters to those who have no idea. The man who I talked to (owner?) said he is Japanese.. and if so. I had such a yummy happy experience at Sushi Mike's with my husband. We were greeted so warmly by a gentleman who I believe must have been the owner. We initially sat outside for dinner but asked to be reseated when the mosquitos started to bite. This request was swiftly accommodated. When the food came out we were overjoyed. Tried to order delivery through Seamless / Grubhub. Waited an hour and a half and called the restaurant. They did nothing but lie to me and blame Seamless about them missing the order. If you make a mistake own up to it and get it fixed. I can't eat excuses. Shameful customer service. UPDATE Mike and I spoke and he was very friendly and accommodating. I understand that things can happen and he went out of his way to make things right. Good customer service goes a very long way. Word on the street from the River towns people is that my boy Mike is actually not Japanese, but he sure knows how to run a Japanese restaurant. That's all that matters. You will usually find my boy mike chilling and laid back with smiles laying on the couch like Tony Soprano. The special rolls will run you about 13-15 dollars a pop, but they are special so that is okay. Lets get down to brass tack, the sushi... The guy gets solid fish, he really does. I have been coming here since I was a young lad ( 2005). He wins Best of Westchester. Get a few special rolls, skip the basic rolls and enjoy yourself. Bring a soda yourself though, I don't think that soda machine has been maintained, soda very flat. One time this dude made me the "anthony roll". We have been going to Sushi Mike's for years before we relocated out of state. This is the best quality sushi we have experienced while traveling all over the U.S.A. Mikes attention to detail and the great friendly atmosphere will make it your go to restaurant. We recently stopped in for dinner while in NY and were not disappointed. Sushi Mikes use to be my sisters and I favorite restaurant to attend after a long hike or just even a life catch up. However, the owner himself has always been so disgustingly inappropriate and it ruins the dinner. Making rude sly remarks and always hitting on her. Genuinely disgusted by his behavior, but it was still our favorite spot because of the food. After her passing, I decided to order takeout from this place one last time for memories. Once I picked up my order the owner recognize me and opens his disgusting foul mouth "how's you sister doing, give her my number yet?" How can an owner behave in such a manner? --------------- Unfortunately, the repetitive comments you have made in the past are utterly disrespectful and unforgivable. The sushi looked like it was thrown together; the fish was torn and looked like several pieces were made to look like one, matted and plopped on top of rice. Sushi Mike's was a great time. Very intimate and quaint place with excellent food. The roll selection was vast and the specialty rolls we ordered were nothing short of impeccable. We ordered the appetizer BBQ Shrimp which was great and then for our main course we had an Out of Control Roll, an S&S Roll, a Green Dragon Roll and a Spicy Tuna. I chose Sushi Mike's because I spied a short line of people waiting to get in the front door. A woman in a party of 3 waiting for a table assured me it was good & another asked if this was my first time to the place. Yes I answered. After a few questions with the waitress, I decided on a 22 oz Sapporro beer & Chirashi Sushi Deluxe. The drink came out first, then the low sodium soy followed by miso soup a small salad. Both were good, but nothing exceptional. The Chirashi Sushi Deluxe was served with TWO shiso leaves (which I love) & the white sliced pickled ginger had extra heat compared to most. In lieu of Ikura (salmon roe) I requested Tobiko (flying fish roe) which I enjoy immensely, so I agreed with the $1.00 additional charge, though it seemed absurd to me. The Chirashi Deluxe had a nice & plentiful supply of sashimi atop a bowl of tasty sticky rice. It was just enough food, without being too much I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, which, after tip came to $49.80. I give the place 2 thumbs up; food, as well as service here, are definitely on the mark. read more

As a Dobbs Ferry resident, I've gone to and taken out from Sushi Mikes for years now, and never has it disappointed. It's a reliably excellent sushi restaurant. I was prepared to give Sushi Mikes four stars on Yelp. Until yesterday. Yesterday, my mother and I had a meal at Sushi Mikes that blew us away. Was it expensive? Yes. But it was also one of the best meals I've had in recent memory. Usually at Sushi Mikes I order Miso Soup, Garlic Broccoli (shared w/ my mom), Edamame (shared), a Joe Petito Roll (not on the menu but fantastic; shrimp tempura roll w/ avocado), and an S and S Roll. I've tried almost every roll on the menu and these two are by far my favorites. Last night, however, I wanted to try something different. We sat at the Sushi Bar and I asked the waitress to bring out the daily specialty sashimi in addition to my S and S Roll. And oh boy was it fantastic. The soup, broccoli, edamame, and S and S Roll were all fantastic as usual. Then arrived the live scallop sashimi, which came in small pieces on a shell. This was absolutely fantastic. Then came Agi, which resembled Mackarel. Very light, flavorful, and delicate. It came with a fantastic dipping sauce. Similar to the scallop, this came on it's own plate. Finally the rest of my sashimi arrived, including white tuna (great as usual), fatty tuna (absolutely amazing, very flavorful), and uni, which I was having for the first time. The uni was extremely strong yet irresistible. When I looked at the bill for the two of us, which exceeded $100, I wasn't even angry. That meal was, if anything, worth more than they charged us. Came here by chance. We were actually planning on dining at a different establishment but decided on Japanese. We walked in and had a great meal, despite the tight dining area. We started with Beef Tataki and Pepper Tuna Sashimi apps which did not disappoint. Hubby ordered the Sashimi Sampler and he loved it. This is important because he is not a fish eater but because the selection was SO fresh, he enjoyed every bite. I suggested he get some Ponzu to help bring out the flavor of his cuts. At the sushi bar, they had bowls of fresh Urchin, just sitting there, waiting to be procured for a diner's delight. I regret not ordering some. Next time... I had the Rainbow Roll and experienced the same great flavors. The only hiccup was that I originally ordered a Salmon Skin Hand Roll but they sent it out in Maki form by accident. I tried this place when I first moved to Dobbs.... It wasn't good. I recently decided to give it another chance. What I don't understand is that it always seems to be packed out front and with pickup orders. In my opinion it is comparable to super market sushi. A little closer to 3 1/2 but barely. I was visiting my friend John and Sally with Art and they took us here. Place is really close to where they live. We went on a Saturday night and sat outside. We ordered miso soup, the clam soup, the BBQ squid, the beef tataki, the Chef's sushi and sashimi special (kinda omikase) and the American Hero roll and the salmon fever roll. The clam soup isn't bad at all. A light taste to it. Almost like they just through clams in water and boiled it without adding anything else. If this is what they did, then those clams had a tremendous amount of flavor. 3 1/2. The miso soup was pretty good. Very well balanced. Not too strong and not too light. Definitely not that bag stuff you just add water to. 3 1/2. BBQ squid was on point. Like a 4 star. Squid was perfectly cooked and the BBQ sauce isn't overpowering at all. Crunchy with taste. The beef tataki to be lacking in taste and not the greatest cut of beef. Or maybe it's the quality of beef. But even the sauce the tataki is marinated in isn't much. 2 stars. The sushi and sashimi special was overall really disappointing. Not the greatest cuts of fish. And for the price, I was expecting a lot. The flavors of the fish were a little blunt. It wasn't for lack of freshness, at least not that I could tell. I think the chefs needs to pick a better supplier of fish. A real 3. Solid but not great. And mind you, this is suppose to be the chef's special so they're suppose to know what's the freshest and best tasting meats of the night. And this is what they're suppose to give you. If this was their best, then I'd hate to taste their worst. The two rolls were the best thing we had. I'm guessing because the meats were mostly cooked and had other things to compliment their flavors. Both were really good and I think it's all about the rolls here. Solid 4s. So overall for the price of this place, I found it to be way over-priced considering the quality of taste you're getting. Crowded and weirdly split-level sushi "bar" that had none of the relaxed enjoyment of the fish that I have come to expect from a proper sushi bar. This was all pack-em-in, and get-em-out on a Friday night, and we were squeezed in like raw sardines (not on the menu, FWIW). The fuzzy roll was fine, and the gyoza and miso soup were quite exceptional. I'm no stranger to sushi, but the server was both completely condescending and uncommunicatively not understandable in questioning by choices, and unhelpful with discussing the things I wasn't familiar with. My companions were more satisfied with their sampler plates and maki, so in good faith I'll average our experiences out to three stars. I was visiting a friend in New York and I was craving sushi she highly recommended this place and I am so happy that we went to Sushi Mike's! We each had a green tea, miso soups, house salads with ginger dressing and four different specialty roles of sushi. We had the Saturday Night Special roll, S&S roll, French Dynamite roll and an Out Of This World roll. I would have to say that all the rolls had a very different unique flavor, they were a great selection of variety. They were so fresh too- sometimes you order sushi you just don't feel it is as fresh as it should be but this definitely was! Still wondering why I haven't found out about this place until now... The service was quick and polite, the food was hot and fresh, and they took care when I girlfriend told them about her fish allergy. (Who goes to a sushi spot with a fish allergy???)
