Poke Nachos with sauce on the side

I feel like Sushi Freak is always a good place to fulfill that quick and affordable sushi craving! I've had quite a few of their rolls, however I'm also a creature of habit and my go to is the Poke Nachos! At least a couple of times a month our family gets take out from here. My daughter loves the Sunny Cali roll with Tobiko and my wife usually joins me in the Nanchos. We usually do without the Salmon and double up on the Yellow Tail Tuna. The staff is always friendly and attentive and the restaurant has a very casual ambiance. Best for takeout or a quick meal on the go! For anyone looking to satisfy that sushi cravings on a budget, I highly recommend Sushi Freak!

    Good portions and great taste

I tend not to be in favor of a lot of national franchises, and quite frankly a store by the name of "sushi freak" would even not get a second nod from me. But my oldest daughter who is a vegetarian, suggested we go there and try their food. I was impressed with the portion size and value. Yes it is not fast food because it took a little while for them to get it all prepared but very flavorful and a good experience. I had the crab roll and chicken teriyaki dinner. I would order both of those again, but probably not in the same meal since the portions are so large.

The final price (paying with cash) was $102.32 before the tip, which seems very fair given the size of the portions and the quality. The fish was not the very highest quality, but it was very good. The wasabi was some of (if not) the best that I've ever had. The soy and eel sauces were made in-house, and were excellent. Presumably, the rest of the sauces were house-made as well. Leo was a very good and friendly server. The atmosphere was very relaxed but could be suitable for something fancier. The one thing that hurts is the price; as fair as it is, I do wish that it were a smidgen less.

The two rolls I ordered were better than last time. One was The Green Dragon (i think) using Avacado instead of seaweed. The other was Lobster Dance which is scallops and lobster. The Green dragon was okay. The Lobster Dance would have been a lot better without the overpowering sauce. The nigir were okay, but I prefer my nigiri to not have a lot sauce and all three I ordered were heavily covcered in their cloying (oyster based?) sauce. The Monkey Balls were meh, I've had way better here. The Seaweed Salad was excellent which I think was true last time. I guess I still need to try the in restaurant experience, but based on the food alone I'm not sure it would be great. If anyone has a great place they like let me know!!!

Soy sauce is in nearly…read moreeverything, menus aren't always clear, and I'm usually stuck asking a ton of questions or avoiding places altogether. That's why Sakura Sushi & Grill stood out right away. They clearly label gluten-free options on the menu. They also offer gluten-free soy sauce, which is a huge win. Even better, they have lunch specials with gluten-free options, which is rare. It's located in Riverside Plaza in Albuquerque, just past the river on the west side. I ordered the Sushi Lunch A with premium fish and chose the double salmon roll. Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious, and the portions were great for the price. The miso soup that comes with lunch isn't gluten-free, but they brought me a side salad with an amazing gluten-free dressing instead. I felt confident eating here, which is not something I say often. I didn't have any reaction afterward and would absolutely eat here again. One of the coolest surprises: they make their own wasabi in-house. It's not on the menu, but if you ask, they'll bring it out, and it is absolutely worth it. We considered getting a sushi boat, but the lunch specials were a better value for lunch. If we went for dinner, we would absolutely order a boat. I also had hot sake, which paired perfectly with the meal. At the end, they even brought us a sweet cinnamon tea for my friend's birthday, even though we didn't order dessert. Service was warm and attentive the entire time. My friend has a shellfish allergy, and the server made sure her plate only included fin fish, which we really appreciated. We went around 1:30 p.m. on a Tuesday, and it was quiet with only a few other tables. The atmosphere felt calm and relaxed, with a casual, comfortable vibe that made it easy to sit and actually enjoy a conversation without feeling rushed. They close at 3 and reopen for dinner, so it's a great low-key lunch spot if you time it right. My friend also mentioned she brings her young kids here often, and the woman manager or owner is especially kind and welcoming to them. I enjoyed this place so much that I called my husband on the way home to tell him all about it. We're already planning to go back with our kids, which will make this my second visit in one week. If you're gluten-free, this place is a gem. And even if you're not, the quality, service, and overall experience make it absolutely worth a visit.

"Grilled marinated chicken tossed in a sweet-homemade teriyaki sauce." The menu says nothing about the chicken being coated in a "light batter." I called the restaurant told them that I was expecting just grilled marinated chicken, not with a batter. The gentleman who answered the phone, said they've been meaning to take that off the menu. I've seen this item on the Grubhub and restaurant menu before, just didn't order it, and it never said anything about it being battered. So, apparently it's not all that important to change being as the description hasn't changed in all these months. My order was refunded, and I greatly appreciate that, I now need to find something else to eat tonight. Had I been physically able to get in my car, and drive to the restaurant to ask how they prepare their food I would've done that instead of going through a delivery service.

I ordered an egg drop soup, pretty good but the top was broken open which caused a mess in the bag and it got on other food. The walnut shrimp was below it and caved in top. The walnut shrimp was pretty good( could have been crispier). We also tried the coffee chicken which had a subtle coffee flavor and was pretty good. The egg rolls were decent. We had an order of the tempura soft shell crab & veggie dish. A bit salty but good. I ended with ordering a key lime pie(very sweet & not worthy of an $8 price tag). I have to say the young man helping me out felt bad and threw in an extra key lime pie. The place had many tables occupied but it was comfy atmosphere. Received white rice but ordered fried.

For 30.00 you can order whatever you want from the large sushi menu. You have to eat it all and you have a two hour time limit. It kind of reminded me of Meat Beard the food challenge Tuber who eats gigantic food challenges except that you don't get a free meal if you eat everything. It's okay sushi. I find that sushi here in ABQ tends to be the sweet sauce kind and that's no exception here. I had a few nigiris a few special rolls and an eel hand roll. I liked the eel roll except I thought I'd left cream cheese on sushi back in Seattle where I used to live. I've given up on super fresh fish here in ABQ, mainly because I get that we are in the desert so any sushi is welcome. But the nigiris were all fresh tasting with bouncy flesh. The surf clams was the best of those. The place is a little tatty with a half assed attempt at paper flower decorations on a few walls. It's clean but looks old and worn. The staff were nice and friendly and didn't make you work hard to re-order. So the answer to my question is Yes, being able to eat a lot of mediocre food for free is a nice treat. This is better than a lot of the other sushi joints in town and more betterer because you can eat a ton if you want
