Recently came with my friend for dinner, heard good reviews about the Freeport location from a different friend so wanted to try a new sushi spot. The restaurant is tucked away among a strip of other shops/stores and restaurants off of Alhambra. It might be easy to pass but because you don't see it from the street. The inside of this restaurant is so beautiful! The decor is lovely, beautiful wallpaper and wall art, plants and flowers everywhere, lots of seating (table/booth and bar), and the atmosphere was overall relaxing. The staff were friendly and helpful, greeted us as soon as we got there, and were attentive during our meal. My friend got an order of their oysters and the fire starter roll, I ordered the spd roll. I loved my roll, it had spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and fresh salmon. It was filling, delicious, and a nice level of spicy (I would've preferred maybe jalapeño or an additional spice). Bad service. There was plenty of staff, and only four tables with customers. So this should have been a good experience. Despite the slow dining room, we had to wait for 20 minutes to get waters and order. (During that 20 minute wait, I stopped the servers three times asking to order our food. They kept saying they'd be back. Then they seated two other tables, and served those new tables their waters immediately and took their orders first. They gave our table one glass of water for two people. I finally asked to order and said we've been waiting 20 minutes, and the server said that the other tables came first. Which was not true, we were there 5-10 minutes before them. When I finally ordered our bento boxes, the staff repeated back my order incorrectly, showing there was no attention to detail. Food was okay. Some of the sashimi fish slices were still slightly frozen. I don't know what the deal is with this place. Maybe I came on a bad day. Regardless, I will never come back here. I actually hope they improve their situational awareness and service, and that my negative review gets lost in a sea of good ones. I truly do want good restaurants to succeed. How do you start a bad review of a place you like. We were a late lunch, and I was hungry. We ordered the following, Katsu pork, some type of unagi roll, cucumber sunimono with octopus, and a maguro nigiri. We sat and waited for our lunch in an near empty space. The unagi roll showed up first - what a boring presentation and bland flavor - I had to search for the unagi? The complementary pickled cukes came next - they were tasty. so we ordered more, with octopus. The octopus was cut up into small bits in a huge container of sliced cukes - very un-balanced - the octopus was very hard and bland and dificult to find. The pork katsu was good but needed more sauce - I ordered some more but the waitress acted like I didn't need it. To top it all, I ordered some tuna as a final item, and the waitress brought me a unagi nigiri. I love unagi - it was well presented but was cold/stiff and slathered with unagi sauce - way to sweet. Overall, the meal was so-so and could of used some more diligence in bringing out more flavors. The service was good except the err at the end. I will be back, but take more control in how I wish my food to be served!!!! read more

Came to sushi because I had heard good things about their sushi and sashimi. We got the spd roll, cafe special roll, and Freeport roll (similar to a dragon roll). We also got the XL sashimi which all came out to be around $85. This was a great deal for good quality sushi and sashimi. The food came out fast and we were sat right away on a Tuesday evening. coming back from a cruise with my girlfriend, we were craving something asian and this hit the spot. not only did we have really fast service and felt welcome in the restaurant, the sushi was even better. the portions were huge and tasted so good that it made the price point seem too good to be true. we got all of this for about $84 and we got some eyes from other tables wishing that they got the same thing as us. the SPD roll was my favorite and the other rolls were just as good. we were looking for a dragon roll and the freeport roll was like a similar version which i thoroughly enjoyed. having the plate of sashimi and the freshly grated wasabi was super tasty as well. overall the ambiance was good and i would definitely come back again to get some more sushi... maybe even more. definitely returning and going to introduce my friends to this place and get some more rolls read more

I really wish we could rate this place higher. It is convenient restaurant. The food is good, but they have a tendency to messed up your order and being very unapologetic about it. Having to get home only to drive back again and get the rest of your order remade or corrected, it's just a terrible customer experience and a sure way to ruin your evening plans. Recently, we ordered a last minute sushi platter to celebrate our friend giving birth (it's nice they're located near the hospital). They were able to accommodate our order within 30 minutes and were super nice about it! Pros: great service and friendly staff. They typically are good on checking up on you. Sushi is fresh and I enjoyed the rolls they offer. It's a pretty casual place and great for groups. Cons: it's part of a busy business area so parking can be tricky when it's around the dining hours. The parking is limited. If you park at the meters, the parking police come by pretty regularly. read more

Our daughter and her husband brought us here because our grandkids like sushi!! This place is busy!! Miso soup is good but could use a bit more tofu, the tofu in the soup was SO tiny and only a few pieces. We had the edamame both traditional way with salt (though there wasn't any salt on them) and spicy with jalepenos...these were delicious! I had the grilled chicken Don bowl and it was loaded with grilled chicken, steamed broccoli and rice. A solid place for affordable sushi. Nothing here will blow you away but it will definitely satisfy that sushi craving and achieve this in an affordable way. I went on a Saturday morning when the restaurant was not particularly busy. The staff were attentive and polite and the sushi chefs were busy. There are a few decorations that help echo that this place is a mid-tier Japanese restaurant. The meal began with free sunomono dish. I ordered two rolls, the Paradise and the Dream and both were satisfying. I didn't expect one of them to be deep fried but it was still enjoyable. The presentation was beautiful and I had enough to take home for a snack later. The fish isn't top quality, but neither is it bottom shelf. The rolls come with a lot of sauce and dressings, as is the case for a lot of Americanized sushi places. read more

I LOVE SUSHI CAFE! This place is nice for their bento boxes, soups and of course, sushi! We never have to wait to be seated when we go. We often are greeted promptly and taken to our seat. New favorite sushi joint alert! My fiancée and I finally tried this place after passing by and saying to ourselves, "we need to go there!" Well I was nearby finishing up a workout at In Shape fitness and she was about to take her lunch break and floated the idea out there to meet. I said yes with the quickness! I got there early and got us a table and drinks. The lunch crowd was winding down as it was close to 2pm. The staff here were very accommodating and kept checking to see if I was ready to order. As soon as my fiancée said she was on her way I put in a couple appetizer orders. We started off with the stuffed mushrooms and mixed tempura. The tempura was absolutely delicious! The carrots were so crispy. The broccoli was on point and the one shrimp we got with the mix was phenomenal. Loved the entire plate. The stuffed mushrooms were huge, filled with snow crab and cream cheese and drizzled with a slight tangy sauce. We devoured all of them without regret lol. We decided to split a bento box with sesame chicken and tonkatsu as the proteins. Also ordered the King roll. The sesame chicken here was done so well. It was my favorite of all the things I ate. The tonkatsu was super crispy and the tonkatsu sauce was rich with flavor. Really enjoyed my experience at this local spot. It's in the shadow of Kru which is one of the top sushi spots in the Sacramento region. Parking here can be a bit of a drag but the food makes up for the hassle! read more

I cannot express how impressed and happy we are with Sushi Cafe's food, and their service. We had ordered a BBQ salmon appetizer one time that came with dairy, even though we had mentioned there was a dairy allergy and Sushi Cafe was so wonderful, offered us a credit next time we came in to have it made dairy free. We just ordered (during a VERY busy Sunday evening) to pick up a to go order, and they not only were so sweet on the phone taking our order, but they remembered the dairy allergy associated with our phone number, and their service was so incredible and impressive despite being so busy. The people working inside were working so hard, doing such an amazing job and they really deserve recognition for that. This was my first visit here, my friend lives in the neighborhood otherwise I would have never found it. It's tucked into a nondescript strip mall behind OBO and Kru. It's a super cute and inviting place with fun artwork and a little sushi bar. We both had lunch bentos and wow, what a lot of food! They start with a little cucumber salad, then Miso soup and a huge box. You can pick two things from a very long list. I had hamachi sashimi and tempura. It came with salad, rice, and a couple small California roll pieces. The sashimi and the California rolls were great, as was the tempura. It was a great lunch and a good deal too. Ate here and had hives for 4 days following. Histamine reaction. I've eaten sushi my whole life and never had a reaction until eating here. They were very behind, scrambling. Stood at the front with no acknowledgment for 10m. Dirty dishes. Poured soy sauce in the dip dish and you could see it mix with dishwasher water. When asking for our check, server opted to start bussing tables instead (it was 8:30p and restaurant was half empty). Which isn't major but noticed she stuck her fingers inside cup glasses to hold three at once. Watched her go to the back (she was always in view) then immediately to her server computer. Then came and brought our check. Did not wash her hands in between any of that. Then proceeded to RUN FOOD to tables in-between running our card. Wasn't going to say anything but this persisting hives/histamine reaction has annoyed me enough to let others know, stay away from here. read more

Who would have thought a Japanese eatery tucked in an inconspicuous, dinky strip mall serve such an outstanding food? Even though its Happy Hour allure was gimmicky which was advertised by a huge sign outside but only consisted of four types of drinks with no food, we gave it a try at late lunch hour to eat and rest from a road trip. Once settled in our booth, service flowed in smoothly. Server gave us pickled cucumber appetizer to showcase hospitality. It was delicious. Asked for a deep fried sushi as I am not a huge fan in traditional sushi per se but like everything deep fried. Give me a deep fried cockroach I'd probably eat it hahaha. Server recommended Paradise sushi and I took the suggestion. The Paradise sushi roll tasted absolutely divine! It contained crab meats boy that was so fresh. Crispy exterior contrasting with soft interior contents of seafood created such an unusual gastronomic experience. Everything was fresh and tasty. I enjoyed every bite, devouring it was indeed a Paradise as I almost lost myself in it. Their sushi set a high standard from that moment on for me to compare with any other Japanese restaurants follow suit. Highly recommend Paradise sushi. Husband dropped a tempura to my plate to try. It was crunchy to the nth degree. I have no idea shrimp tempura can be so phenomenal. It definitely had the WOW factor! I also tried a piece from my son's Godzilla sushi roll, deep fried with eel as MVP, it was very good as well. Dessert was delicious especially deep fried ice cream. Ordered vanilla but got green tea, I didn't contest as it was equally good or better. It was a huge ball, smooth creamy inside and crispy crunchy outside, I know it's not easy to make because of the temperature control but the chef pulled it off. Whoever's in charge of the centered open kitchen is a bona fide culinarian who has mastered the skill in Japanese cuisine. Kudos to him! Their price was very reasonable. Service was excellent. Our server was polite, kind and had this sweet cheerful energy. We asked for more cucumber appetizer and she brought us more with no charge. That was nice! She checked on us, cleaned empty dishes promptly, She was also respectful to me. I liked her service and my tip reflected that. Vibe was welcoming, warm and calm. Generally clean in a small space simply designed with Japanese prints on wall, some oriental elements and a lovely holiday decoration. It was not super tidy and the worn-out dirty menu can definitely use an upgrade. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience at Sushi Cafe and will return when we are in Sacra. Absolutely amazing restaurant. The food was incredibly good. We started with two rolls which were the big roll and the Freeport roll. Accompanied with a small sashimi mix. The food was so good that we almost forgot to take a picture of it since we started eating it. Super friendly staff and even though we came in nearly 10 minutes before they close they were still super happy to take our order. We did order to go although I immediately regret it since the atmosphere and ambience in the restaurant was extremely cozy and very relaxing. Highly recommend for a great night out. The food was very well priced. Staff was extremely helpful and kind and not to mention the bathrooms were impeccable. Super clean restaurant all around. This is one of the best kept secrets in Sacramento! The sushi and service are great. The prices are very budget friendly compared to most good sushi places in Sacramento, especially for my family. It's kid friendly & very casual, not stuffy. Parking isn't the greatest (maybe one reason to keep this place a secret), but food and prices make up for it. The Freeport location has a nice ambiance for a date, and the Alhambra location is better for larger group or families. Parking in both locations are minimal. read more

Not really sure why this place only has 3.5. To be honest, if i could give it a 10 star I totally would. Unfortunately, yelp does not give that option. Nevertheless, i will write this review to make up for the lack of 5 stars from other poor judgments from other people. Sushi Cafe is located on Alhambra in a strip mall. The parking lot is small but there is street parking around the area. The building is old but the inside is decorated with a cool mural and looks cute. The place is super cute. It was a Friday night and people were coming and going constantly but it wasn't too loud and crazy so good atmosphere. The staff is super friendly! Service is 5/5 The food is good. The Mexican Roll had a nice kick of spice but I was looking for something crunchy on it. The prices are about average at $10ish a rule. There are other places that are cheaper but this place worth it for a little splurge. The 49er roll was super delicious so would order that next time. They charged for 3 miso soups even tho it should've only been 2 because 1 came with one of the meals. We brought it to their attention and they promptly removed it! I did an Uber Eats pickup and it was ready for pickup timely and no issues with the pickup. I was really impressed with the packaging - a beautiful flower and all the condiments nicely laid out. Despite it being a to-go order, the sashimi was also beautifully cut and laid out. I'm giving 4 stars because a prior sit-down experience was subpar with inattentive service. I am willing to give it another sit-down try, and definitely adding this to my usual rotation of takeout places. Parking can be tight in the plaza but I found a 15 min parking zone that was perfect for pickup. read more

When in downtown, do as the locals do? We were in the area doing some errands and found ourselves quite hungry. When the idea of stopping at a new restaurant popped up, we surely had a list of places to go. We saw the rave reviews that Sushi Cafe had in their roledex, and NEEDED to check it out. Upon coming into this restaurant we were greeted promptly and sat quickly. Thats really where the quickness ended. Maybe because we arent regulars (there seemed to be a lot) but there were people who came in after us, but got their order taken or checked in on before us. We were finally given water and a cucumber appetizer, which was a nice touch. After about 20 min., somebody came back around and checked on us, asking if we were ready to order. We ordered and another 15 min later we started getting the food. Simply put there is not much more to say. The food came out, the fish is fresh, and delicious. I think that this may be one of my new favorite sushi spots in the Downtown area. I could do with a bit of a quicker acknowledgment from the serving staff, but all in all it wasn't terrible. It's been a while since I've been to this Sushi Café location but I'm happy to see they still provide the same good food, service and reasonable prices. Sure the costs of their menu in general has gone up but bentos and rolls still seem reasonable and consistent with the market; especially at lunch. Yesterday I was lucky enough to have lunch with my boss and coworker. We arrived around 11:30am and there were still many tables available. We ordered shrimp tempura, stuffed jalapeños, bbq albacore tuna, Matty roll, Dream roll one other roll. Everything was delicious! The shrimp tempura and bbq albacore were good sized. I like the sauce that was on the tuna and salad below. This was my first time trying the stuffed jalapenos and would definitely order them again. The snow crab and albacore tuna mixed well with the cream cheese and hint of spice. The Matty's roll was one of my favorites. It is filled with spicy tuna, shrimp tempura and topped with avocado, seared tuna, sauce and sliced lemon. The thing that makes the roll unique is the fresh lemon zest flavor. If like lemon, you will love this roll. The Dream roll was also memorable for the soft shell crab, spicy crawfish and toppings of avocado and spicy sauce. All of the rolls were really big and great for sharing. There were 3 of us and despite how good everything was, we struggled to finish everything. Sushi cafe delivers fresh and delicious flavors. After checking out their list of rolls and returning after being away for so long, I can't wait to go back. read more

I love Sushi Cafe. They're a hidden gem that makes me hesitant to even write this because I don't want to share. Their price ratio is insane. I heavily recommend their bentos, but you can't go wrong order anything. The bentos are generous and they don't skip on size for those $1.50 additions either. Their 8 piece nigiri is an amazing deal. Is this the highest quality sushi ever? No. But it is good and the price is a steal for the quality and sizes they provide. We go at least once every two weeks if we can. Everyone who works there is nice and welcoming and the place feels warm and well decorated with wall murals. Heavily recommend!! read more
