You really can't beat their lunch special served Mon-Sat 11AM-3PM. For $10.50, you can choose two from their regular rolls (three for a slight upcharge) served with choice of soup and garden salad. This last visit, I sat at the bar because they were packed for lunch on a Friday. This service is so fast and friendly. I enjoyed sitting watching the sushi chef making his creations. Perfect spot and relaxing if you're eating solo. I love the sweet flavors in their ginger dressing over the iceberg lettuce. And the savory, comforting taste of the clear soup trulyhitsthespot. I picked the vegetable roll, which had cucumber, daikon, and avocado, and the avocado roll. Though if I knew the vegetable roll already had avocado, I would have ordered something different. There was also lettuce in my vegetable roll, which wasn't bad (I'll take my greens where I can get them), but a little different. My order came out quickly, and the staff packed my food nicely. Met up with a friend who lives in the area for dinner, as we were both in the market for some cuisine of the Asian persuasion. Sushi café is located within a strip mall in the heart of Fleming Island, and from what I've seen, stays consistently busy, especially during lunch hours. It's one of those cozy, quiet, dim-lit sushi joints with the quintessential instrumental music playing in the backround. They do serve sake and beer, but no other alcoholic offerings were noted. My friend went ahead and ordered the Chicken Teriyaki, and since I hadn't decided on my main course yet, I started with the Vegetable Tempura. OK, so I HAVE to ask this, and this is going out to all my New York Yeeps out there. There is an item on the menu called the "New York Cheese Special" Fried Rice. Is this really a "thing" in New York or is this something that was imagined up by Sushi Café? I'm asking because I was so curious that I ordered it. So if you're from New York, PLEASE hit me up via Yelp message and let me know. The food didn't take long to arrive, and upon inspection, my Vegetable Tempura Left a lot to be desired.....like the vegetables. The dish was easily 75% fried onion petals, with a few sparse pieces of broccoli (see pic). That's it. No sweet potato, no mushrooms, etc. I wanted to send it back, but we were in a time crunch, so I just ate the broccoli pieces and left the rest. As for the "New York" fried rice? Even after just one bite of this....I had a really difficult time believing that this recipe came from a foodie paradise like New York. There was no seasoning at all. No garlic, onion, nothing. The beef had a rubbery consistency, and there was so much cheese that it made the rice greasy and mushy. My friend said Her Chicken Teriyaki was "Ok," but took most of it home. Nuff said. All my Jacksonville Yeeps out there that are from New York...here's a recon mission for you. Go to Sushi Café and ask the staff what "part" of New York their fried rice recipe comes from. Brooklyn? Queens? Yonkers? I'd like to know if they'd actually have an answer or if you'd just get a mystified blank stare. As for me, I left sorely disappointed and still hungry.
