Don't let the name deter you if you are not a gin person because they have many options with different types of liquors. One tip: sit at the bar if you can, the set up is stunning especially for taking photos! The cocktail menu was moderately extensive with two full pages of complex and simple cocktails. Honestly, it was so difficult to choose what drink to get because I wanted to get everything on the menu. The bartenders were so attentive and talented - their implementation of each cocktail was even better than the menu descriptions. Not only were the drinks delicious but also beautifully presented. They have some bar bites as well as quite a few small and large plates, we got the pretzels which to my absolute surprise were so good! You can tell the bartenders know exactly what they're doing. The surprise star of the night, though, was the grilled cheese. Calling it a grilled cheese almost feels unfair because this thing was next-level. Perfectly crisp on the outside, rich and gooey on the inside, and paired with the cocktails so well that we were talking about it long after we left. Sometimes the simplest thing on a menu ends up stealing the show. The atmosphere strikes that perfect Charleston balance of classy, cozy, and effortlessly cool. Great service, great drinks, and one of the most memorable grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had. If you're in Charleston and appreciate a serious cocktail program, The Gin Joint is a must-visit. The drinks were also fantastic, I'd give them a solid 9/10. Unfortunately, the food was the biggest disappointment and completely missed the mark. I ordered the tuna crudo, and instead of letting the tuna shine, the dish was completely overwhelmed by hot sauce. There were only about six slices of tuna sitting in what felt like a bowl of sauce, almost a quarter inch deep. It honestly felt more like a hot sauce soup with a little bit of fish added in, which was really disappointing. The service was just okay. The staff wasn't rude, but it also didn't have the level of warmth or hospitality that makes a dining experience memorable. Overall, this place has incredible potential. The space and cocktails are amazing, but the food experience did not match. I really wish I could say I'd go back, but unfortunately I probably wouldn't.

Finds your table, if you arrive early for a reservation we had luck with them seating us and he says a kind goodbye as we left each time. Nice list of 3 mocktails so even if not consuming alcohol one can look to play the part at the table and enjoy the flavor notes of a well made cocktail. The first meal we had was a bit of a work/get together meal. We ordered an assortment of items off of the menu and created a more tapas menu. The charcuterie board we picked the cheeses for and it was lovely. All as expected and quite surprised to find a cheddar I enjoyed. Came with some grapes, figs, nuts, honey and I think mustard. Glazed carrots were phenomenal. Heartily enjoyed the beet salad and thought the presentation was quite pretty. Lamb lettuce wraps are alright. Not my favorite of all the dishes served but delivered as promised, nicely cooked and presented. Spouse really liked the lamb wraps and were a stand out dish to them. Meatballs are excellent truly great texture and flavor. Escargot was a fun take on a classic dish. Finished with a unique strudel in its presentation it was quite pleasant. Spouse liked the peanut butter chocolate dessert. For brunch, I had the carrot ginger soup. Which I must say was a total delight. The soup had the hallmark texture and base flavor of the carrot ginger but it had a beautiful breath of savory and some heat seasoning wise to it. It was quite an elevated soup and heartily enjoyed! I followed the carrot soup with a French toast. I am all for softly scrambled eggs but the French toast was a touch undercooked. (I did not let the restaurant know or give them the chance to make right. I regularly eat soft boiled eggs and soft scrambled so I felt comfortable with consuming them.) Strawberries were ripe and tasty. The whipped cream was gorgeous in thickness and flavor. One in law had the caesar salad with croutons and grilled chicken. Their bowl was left clean so while they are not the talkative of sorts they did seem to enjoy it. Ordered a baguette with butter. Unfortunately the butter never made it to the table but the baguette was enjoyed. Spouse had the Azur burger with the side of tapas style potatoes. All was cooked properly to temperature and texture. Flavor and taste as promised. Wasn't their favorite dish at Azur as we had tried so many lovely dishes a few evenings before. But it did deliver on what was represented in the menu. We sat at the indoor bar, and our bartender was great. The drinks themselves were really good. My Hugo Spritz was excellent, and so was the Silk Sheets. They clearly put a lot into the cocktail program, with tons of syrups, ingredients, and more elaborate drinks on the menu. Unfortunately, the service was incredibly slow, and it seemed very clear that this was not our bartender's fault. The indoor bartender was handling the guests sitting at her bar, service tickets, and drinks for the pool. Meanwhile, the outdoor bartender seemed to have very little going on. Granted, it was over 98 degrees outside, but the workload just seemed really uneven. When we first arrived, it was literally us and one other gentleman at the bar. He wanted an espresso martini or something similar, but apparently the coffee bar had already been shut down for the day. I don't remember the exact reason. They did make it happen for him, which was nice, but it also meant our bartender had yet another thing she had to go out of her way to figure out. What made the wait especially frustrating was that the bar was not busy at the time. It took us around 10 to 15 minutes just to order our drinks, and she didn't actually get a full bar until about 3 to 5 minutes after we finally received them. So this wasn't a situation where she was overwhelmed by a packed bar. She was running out of ice, waiting on things she needed, handling pool and service tickets, and trying to work around a setup that just did not seem efficient. It honestly started to feel almost obnoxious to want to order another round because you could see how much unnecessary work went into making each drink. Again, that is not a criticism of the bartender. She was great and seemed to be doing everything she could. The issue was the setup and flow behind the bar. If you are going to have such an extensive cocktail program, with that many syrups, ingredients, and specialty drinks, the bartenders need to be set up in a way that allows them to actually execute it efficiently. The atmosphere was nice, the drinks we had were great, and I would absolutely give this place another chance. I just hope they figure out a better system because the bartender should not have to work that hard to overcome the setup.
