I've had sushi all over the states: Vegas, North Carolina, Florida, the Gulf Coast, Chicago... and still this place is number 2 next to a little place in Mississippi right on the beach. They've got great food! The tempura is nice and crunchy. The seaweed tastes fresh and so does the seafood. My favorites: The birthday... it's got a little bit of everything and is light on the sauces... eel, crab, shrimp tempura and spicy shrimp, avocado. It's scrumptious. I'm also a fan of the Hollywood roll. Spicy shrimp topped with eel and tempura flakes and drowned in japanese mayo and eel sauce.SO tasty. I avoided this place for years because of how trashy it looks from the outside. Once I was convinced to go in I was amazed at how good their food is. The tempura is excellent as is the sushi. The Udon soup is served in a cauldron that keeps it hot and is a good size, always with leftovers for later. This used to be my all-time favorite sushi place in Bloomington and maybe even the first restaurant to really get me hooked on quality sushi. When I was in my undergrad, I came here often with my friends because we could sit around for hours and even be offered the private rooms in the back if they had not yet been previously reserved. However, I'm not in my undergrad anymore and I do not like to sit around for hours at the restaurant. The only thing hanging back from this place is that the service is just so unbelievably slow. This was the first time that me and my husband have ever been to this restaurant. It was completely fantastic! This wonderful establishment had some of the best sushi I've ever had! It's even in the same category as some of the sushi from Chicago. Very authentic and fresh sushi. We had the spicy tuna roll, the beautiful Alaska roll, the Chicago role, the shrimp tempura, and the sunomono. And the octopus was very well cooked. The customer service was exceptional and I do recommend this to anyone who is a sushi lover like us, and recommend it to anyone who is visiting the Bloomington area. read more

We ate at Sushi Bar tonight for the first time in a couple of years. Things have changed somewhat since our last visit: several items that used to be full-size entrees are now available only as side dishes or part of a bento box, and they now serve three varieties of ramen. My wife had the unaju and I had a bento box with tonkatsu, beef teriyaki, and a mango chicken roll. We also shared the vegetable tempura appetizer and a couple of sushi rolls. Everything was delicious and the service was great! Unfortunately, it looks like business isn't going too well, perhaps in part because the median on the road makes it difficult to get into the parking lot. Everything is currently 35% off, in an effort to attract more customers, and they've been doing that long enough that it's actually printed on the menu! I am getting frustrated with this little place. While the food can be pretty good, the service has been awful my last 3 visits. Tonight, I arrived at 6:15. It took them close to 5 minutes to even speak with me -- a single, middle aged woman. There were 5 tables with couples at the time I arrived. At 6:25 they took my order (12 pieces of sushi, a small salad, and a beer). I received the beer within about 5 minutes, but had to ask for a glass. I received the small salad about 15 minutes later. At 7:05, I was served a plate with 8 pieces of sushi, not 12. When I pointed this out to the waitress, she argued with me about what I ordered. I told her what was missing, again. She decided to get her boss. I explained what was missing to the other young woman, who said that she would get the other 4 pieces in a moment. At 7:17, she came back to tell me that they had only 1 piece of scallop left (I wanted 2), and what would I want for my other 3 pieces? I suggested what I wanted, and I received it in about 10 minutes. I have had trouble being served here before, as a single woman alone at a table. The last time I was here, they forgot about me entirely, and it took me an hour to get my sushi -- and then only after complaining. There is no reason why 5 tables should overwhelm a restaurant with 2 sushi chefs and 2 waitresses. Even with take-out business (presumably called in), an hour is not reasonable. Moreover, if the restaurant gets the order wrong, they should apologize, not argue with the customer, and perhaps even throw in an extra piece of fish, or take something off the total price -- some token of acknowledgement. At this time, they are claiming "40% off" regular restaurant prices for the meals (alcohol not included). Twelve pieces of sushi, a small salad and a beer, plus tax and tip, was $30 WITH the discount. The fish was good, but the pieces are rather small. Moreover, the sushi did not have any wasabi between the rice and the fish. There are no gratis appetizers (such as edamame or Japanese pickles), and no hot clothes to wash the hands before eating. The waitress serving me was unfamiliar with the types of fish and could not recognize them on my plate when trying to tell me I had the right order (when I didn't). I can't say that I am very impressed. This used to be a nice go-to place in my neighborhood. I will likely start looking elsewhere, further from home. read more

Decided to go with a friend because it wasn't too far, seemed reasonably priced, etc. Sushi came out looking half digested. Tasted that way too. Wait staff was very polite and the chef offered to replace the food, but I was too off-put by the fact that I was eating some sort of Orwellian fish paste to give it another go. The seaweed salad, however, was very adequate. Please do not let their ability to not fail at serving an edible seaweed salad convince you that you should order sushi here though. Avoid especially if your food's texture matters to you. I like sushi a lot (clue: I went to a restaurant called Sushi Bar), even sashimi, and fish is supposed to have structure. This was more similar to pulled pork than what sushi meat is supposed to be. Very slimy and unappealing. read more

For the first few years I was in town, Sushi Bar was my sushi joint of choice. The decor is lovely: mellow, soft lighting, with booths that, while not enclosed, give the illusion of privacy. The clientele was never really my scene (lots of long tables packed with sorority girls) but the consistency of the product made up for it. I can't comment on the freshness of the fish as it's been a fair amount of time since I've actually eaten it, but from what I recall it seemed fresh and well-made. At any rate, it wasn't the food or the decor that brought me here. I usually give restaurants the benefit of a doubt when I get bad service. After all - one server's bad day shouldn't tarnish an entire company's image. However, I think Sushi Bar deserves the call out. I had a bad experience over a year ago when I went during their rush. My sushi took over an hour and a half to come out, as I was watching other (huge) tables that had come in after us receiving their meals. A couple of other smaller groups were having a similar experience, and I remember distinctly sharing annoyed glances with those also suffering without their food. But, being that I hate walking out on a meal (especially sushi) I stuck it out until our server finally delivered our food. It was fine, except we had gotten a wrong roll. We, being mild-mannered despite our crankiness, asked if there was something that could be done in the way of taking the roll off our bill, being that we didn't want it and we'd already waited forever. What we got, instead, was an argument. The woman (the manager?) said that it was, in fact, what we ordered, and that we wouldn't have anything taken off our bill. Well, okay. We dealt with it, left, and I hadn't been back since. Until last night, on my birthday. It was a little after 9PM and Sushi Bar closes at 10PM. Usually I'd go to Asuka, but they close at 9:30PM, and I didn't want to be *that person* showing up minutes before they close for a labor-intensive meal. I hadn't been to Sushi Bar in a long time anyway so I figured I'd give it the benefit of a doubt. Poor choice. We got there before 9:30 and there were no cars in the parking lot. We went in and the place was empty - not a single table there. We could feel the kitchen and the servers staring us down as we went in. We were given a booth. The server (a guy) was alright, not exactly jolly but not unpleasant either. He got us waters. The next fifteen minutes were an exercise in surveillance. While we sat, deciding what to eat, I watched the same woman who I'd encountered in my last visit pacing back and forth, glaring at us from various positions around the restaurant. They were clearly very annoyed that we were there, and they did not hide it. I could hear her and the kitchen bickering in the distance. While we were looking at the menu our server, suddenly exasperated, came by to tell us that the kitchen was closing at 10 and that we'd better get our food in. It wasn't a kind warning, and it wasn't that late. We did put an appetizer in, and while that was in the works another couple came in, who the manager-woman tried to shoo out the door, even though they were still open. I don't know what ended up happening with that couple. We got our appetizer and returned our menus. It was fried tofu, and it was alright - I don't like tofu, but it was well-presented and (according to my roommate, who ordered it) tasty. We didn't get any entrees. I was still being watched from around the corner by a very angry group of workers, which wasn't exactly the atmosphere I was looking for on my birthday. So, we left. Bottom line: The food is good, and the atmosphere is my favorite of all the sushi places in town, but the service has completely turned me away. Asuka is my place of choice now, because despite the gamble that is ordering sushi from them (I've often received a wrong roll) they've always been accommodating and pleasant when they make a mistake, or even when they don't. That's what service is, and Sushi Bar doesn't have it. read more

The sushi is pretty good. I go there occasionally to get a couple rolls. They're a little small, but they're decent. Everything else is pretty bad. The ramen is absolutely terrible (you can make it better yourself from the 99 cent stuff) and the service is even worse. I've gotten other dishes there as well (bento box lunch, etc.) and they've been pretty bad. Seriously, I can't stress this enough. I've been putting off writing a review for Sushi Bar because I'm afraid too many people will find out about it and make my carryout wait time too long. It is definitely a hidden gem in Bloomington. It seems very run down from the outside, and for the longest time my boyfriend and I never gave it a try. But once we did there was no turning back. I'm not kidding you when I say that we get sushi here AT LEAST once a week. The sushi is awesome. We love the crispy spicy tuna roll, jalapeño roll, Hoosier roll, Arizona roll, Christmas roll, 2009 roll, and fire fire roll. If I'm being honest I don't think we've tried a roll there that we haven't liked. Their spring rolls are soooo good- and I'm pretty picky with spring rolls. Personally I prefer to carry out when we eat here- mostly because I prefer hiding in the safety of our apartment when we stuff ourselves with this awesome sushi. If you love sushi I highly recommend sushi bar. It's the best sushi place I've tried in Bloomington. It's very reasonably priced.. We'll buy 10 (specialty) rolls and two sides of white rice for about $53 every time. They are constantly running a 40% off everything deal. Definitely worth a try if you're ever in Bloomington and in the mood for sushi. read more

If you've ever been to a real sushi restaurant (as in, one near the ocean or with better quality food), you'd taste the difference immediately. There are definitely some dishes here which are as good as any, for sure, but some of their sushi is simply not fresh-tasting. The ikura is a bit oily and the salmon is buttery (not the good kind). My philosophy when choosing new restaurants to try is to never judge a book by its cover, or in other words don't always judge the quality of the food by a slightly dilapidated exterior. In my opinion Sushibar fits this philosophy pretty well, the external appearance seems a bit run down (by no means falling apart), but the interior is quaint. Inside there are booths, tables with chairs, and a couple private rooms for larger parties. The staff is friendly, and is generally attentive and will come by frequently to refill drinks while you wait for your food. The menu is pretty extensive and includes a wide variety of different sushi rolls and types as well as other items such as ramen and noodle bowls, hot entrees like chicken teriyaki, and desserts (one of my favorite desserts is green tea mochi ice cream, which they have). My one problem with Sushibar and the reason I did not give it a 5 is that it takes ~40 minutes to get your food once you've ordered, which is why I order a salad and Miso soup to be brought out while I wait. Overall I would definitely recommend Sushibar to anyone looking for relatively inexpensive but good quality sushi. read more

For starters, I am in the Air Force, I have had food from all around the world in the real world environments where the food actually originates from. Furthermore, Sushi, sashimi and nigiri are some of my favorite foods. I have had sushi all across the U.S. AND Asia. The first thing I would like to point out is the The Sushi you get in California or New York is not the same as you get in Indiana. Nor are they the same as you get in Asia. They are all just as close to actual Japanese sushi as they are to each other. The fish is not as fresh as it would be in an area that you have fresh caught fish but unless you want bass and catfish sushi it is worth the sacrifice. Sushi Bar has the best sushi in the area and there service 9 times out of 10 is stellar and the area is clean, unlike Japan. NY and Cali. pricks need to stop being snobs. Sushi here isn't bad just because it isn't the sushi you know, it is just different. Oh and if you leave you debit card at a restaurant it isn't there fault or problem, it is yours because you are an idiot. read more

This is the best place for sushi in this small town. I always order the tiger roll and dynamite and never got disappointed. Sashimi here is also very fresh. Sometimes the manager will ask you to taste the fresh oyster since they only serve it for certain days. I like this quiet place. read more
