It was fine. DD wanted sushi and we were nearby so we ended up here. I ordered the miso soup and a modified vegetable hibachi fried rice entree. Miso Soup - your basic vegan-friendly miso. Mine was served lukewarm. Could've been warmer, could've been tastier. Vegetable Hibachi Fried Rice - Vegan-friendly when you omit the eggs. I also omitted the mushrooms. I have loved hibachi fried rice since I was a child. It has a slightly sweeter taste than Chinese-inspired-in-America fried rice. And I typically enjoy Sushi AI's veggie fried rice, but something was off and missing in this location's version. I inquired about chili oil and the waitress said they had sriracha. I politely asked her to check again because I just couldn't fathom there not being any chili oil in this restaurant. Chili oil appeared and saved my rice dish. I practically used the whole bottle but the rice was delicious as a result. DD got the all you can sushi dinner for around $24. (I honestly think this is the only reason she insists on Sushi Ai when she craves sushi.) She enjoyed her food but thought it took too long between orders. She'd fill out her sushi order sheet and it'd be a while before anyone came to retrieve it from the table's end. She also ordered a plum wine, which she raved about how deliciously sweet it tasted. REMINDER RE ALL YOU CAN EAT: If you don't eat everything on your plate they WILL charge you extra (yes, even if you try to throw it away). Personally, I like this "no waste" approach. So just keep this in mind if your eyes are typically bigger than your stomach. We both agreed service left a little to be desired. No water refills. Awkward exchanges and looks. And DD's biggest pet peeve: staff doubting she's old enough to drink, so they always think her ID is fake. (I keep telling her she'll take it as a compliment one day!) There are at least half dozen Sushi Ai's around the STL metro area. I'm not sure if they're independently owned or not, but the menus are pretty much identical at all of them that we've visited (which now totals 6). This is a relatively new find for us. This is our 4th time there. We were there tonight and 6:50 pm and it was packed. Luckily we got the last table. The presentation of every order is beautiful. We tried the Snow White roll, the Saint Louis roll, Crazy Crab Roll, Shrimp Tempura, Pop Up, Volcano Roll, house salad (the ginger dressing was wonderful, full of flavor) and crab Rangoon's. My 4 vs 5 was that I found a hair on my plate as soon as it was set down. I assume it was from a waitress as everyone preparing the sushi had hair covering on. I also thought that a few of the roles had a little too much rice, and just felt like there was a little more rice than was needed. Everything on the inside was definitely sufficient though. My brother and I stopped by Sushi Ai in Chesterfield on a Saturday around 1:30pm. Although there are lots of sushi ai restaurants around St. Louis, we recently discovered this one and really enjoy it more than the other two we've been to. A few things are different here-- the menu has a standard a premium option, with the premium being a bit more expensive than the standard lunch fare, but there are a lot more options in terms of rolls and appetizers. The restaurant does lunch prices Tues-Sat (closed Monday, all day dinner on Sunday). We were seated relatively quickly but service was a tad slower than I would normally expect. Nevertheless, the restaurant had ample seating and many of the other patrons were enjoying the AYCE as well. We each ordered three rolls and especially enjoyed the Sunset Tokyo roll, as well as the broccoli in the vegetable tempura. Unlike the other locations, the gyoza is fried here but the filling was nicely flavorful with pork, cabbage and a few glass noodles as well. The quantity of food for the price is something that I really appreciate, and I would say the quality of this sushi ai is better than the others we've been to. Not necessarily coast-level or gourmet sushi, but an overall great value for the meal. We enjoyed our experience and will plan to be back in a few months once the sushi coma is over! read more

So just an update on this restaurant, we celebrated my wife's birthday here at Sushi AI last night. I even called ahead (3 hours before our arrival) to give them a heads up we are wanting a table for 6 people. 1/2 of our party arrived early to ensure a table was ready; and it was. For tonight's outing, the food was good but the service was lacking. Everybody that showed up in our party ordered all you can eat Sushi, Sashimi, Sushi Rolls. The waitress took everybody's order to the 3 Sushi chefs working at the counter (all at the same time). About 20-25 minutes later 1/2 of our table got their food while the other half sat and waited for another 30 minutes before the waitress brought out the remaining food. After multiple inquiries about "where is the rest of our table's orders", the waitress was rushing around the restaurant and paying little attention to (avoiding) our table when we saw her she was giving us it will be right up excuse. 1/2 of our table was finished eating while 1/2 was still waiting on theirs to show up. This was unreal. The restaurant was about 35-40% full when we sat down and about 50-55% full when they brought out our first plates of sushi. Not going to lie, I was not a very happy customer. Once again, the sushi was good but the service was not so much. I'm bumping down my rating for this restaurant to 1 star for very poor execution of food service. read more

Stopped here on a Saturday night 15 min before closing and everything was being cleaned, including the area they make sushi. Many times restaurants say they are closed when it's that close to closing time. They welcomed me in and I ordered my food. Everybody was wearing a mask. My kid & I stopped here for lunch at the suggestion of a good friend and we were not disappointed at all and were definitely full at the end of our meal. We both ordered the all you can eat option and we were ready for an adventure. The first thing that was a little confusing and was not explained at all by the server is that this is not a traditional buffet experience. You are handed several special paper menus and two pencils in which you would mark down what you wanted and then it would be prepared and brought out to you. This was very confusing to begin with since we did not know the etiquette at the restaurant and did not want to offend or look foolish. Once you place your order your food is prepared and brought out to you the food was quite enjoyable but unlike a traditional buffet where you could try one piece before going back for more you have to order entire rolls for most of the menu options. The option on the menu is 1 appetizer, 6 sashimi and 3 rolls of sushi and a desert as a standard order. THIS IS A LOT OF FOOD! We ended up trying to order a second time with less things chosen so that we could get our money's worth but when you realize you are charged extra for any uneaten food, normally .50 per sashimi and a dollar per roll. This can add up fast. Also, on a lot of the rolls are very thick with an unusually large amount of rice being used. Now I have to say we were impressed by the flavors we encountered, the food was very good but when you look at the investment it comes up a little short. Two all you can eat meals are $23 each, two sodas is $6, we ended up with uneaten food at the end that cost us an additional $6. All in all at the end of the meal we ended up spending just over $60 for two people. We are going to try a different location next time to see if this is the standard practice or just for this particular facility, but if you are hungry go ahead and stop by for the experience, but bring a full wallet to cover the cost. read more

We came here today (Sunday) only after stopping by the St. Charles location and seeing how busy it was. This is definitely a smaller location and not as nice but the woman serving was nice and very attentive. Which was good because I drank about 5 ice teas after burning the skin off the roof of my mouth from the St. Louis roll. I now have a fear of tempura.. which is probably a good thing. The sushi itself wasn't horrible but not great. I'm not sure if this is a timing thing or a location thing but it was quite a bit cheaper than I thought it was going to be. If I could rate it a zero it would be a zero. First food lacks flavor and all the tempura dishes came out oily and mushy. Then the rolls lack flavor the rice was stale. The nigiri had so much rice double the size of normal nigiri. The kicker is we couldn't finish any of the apps because they were so mushy and we told the server that they were mushy and not tasty at all. She tried to charge us extra for apps that weren't finished because she believe we ordered to much and that we are just wasting it. The menu says they will only charge .50 for every piece of unfinished sushi and rice. Not for any apps that were mushy and nasty. We tried talking to the server and she became very rude saying she didn't care what the menu said that we ordered way to much and that we are wasting her food and kept trying to miscount the actual sushi and rice that we are paying for. What more can I say about a AYCE sushi place. Definitely an indulgent place and best if you go for lunch as their AYCE is 12.99 compared to their dinner and Sunday hours which is 19.99. They actually had a pretty good and wide selection of sushi, nigiri, and appetizers. We ordered about 5 rolls, 3 types of nigiri, and a few appetizers such as edamame and vegetable tempura. Tempura was ok, not as crunchy as I'd like but does the job. We ordered the salmon, eel and hamachi nigiri pieces as well as the hamachi roll, salmon roll, the deep fried roll, and one other. The specialty rolls were not all that exciting - they definitely did the job though of filling you up. But nothing too special. To get your monies worth I would definitely recommend the nigiri pieces. The hamachi was was actually pretty good! And I wish that I had just ordered like 5-6 pieces of that than getting the actual roll. The salmon and hamachi roll was very little fish and mostly all rice with the seaweed paper. So definitely not worth to fill your stomach on. The nigiri pieces being $2 each on their own would be the best bang for your buck and you get the big pieces of fish!! The spam musubi was also one of my favorites alongside the nigiri pieces. Perfectly sweet and we ordered 2 but they had cut it in half so it was basically 4 pieces so beware when ordering and make sure you finish!
