This was my first time visiting the Maryland Heights location, and I was hoping for that same level of taste and freshness--but unfortunately, it didn't quite measure up. I really enjoy rolls with that sweet cream cheese flavor, but here it wasn't as rich or sweet as I'm used to. The food overall didn't taste as fresh either. I also came about an hour and a half before closing (and 30 minutes before final call), so that might've played a role, but the customer service didn't feel as warm or attentive as I've experienced at the other two spots. I've been to other locations that I would recommend, this one was a bit of an experience. I'm gonna give them 2.5 stars and that'll be from the food I actually got. I say actually got because, story time. My friend did the all you can eat so she checked off the boxes on the paper menu so they can bring it to the back. I didn't do the all you can eat and ordered a shrimp tempura roll and the tempura yaki soba. The waitress didn't write any of that down and immediately went to another table and took their order. Another party sat town at a table near us, they ordered, and another table after that ordered, then she proceeded to go to the back. My friend ordered some rolls, and a lot of fried apps which all came out together. 30 minutes passed and neither of mine came out. I was thinking she probably forgot since she didn't write anything down. She eventually came by and said "I'm so sorry, I didn't write the order down for the back until now and they said that we're out of the yaki soba," at this point I had been in the restaurant a little over an hour. I get it, supply chain issues, but this could have been avoided if she wrote down the order. She asked if I wanted to order anything else, and I did but after I ate the shrimp tempura because I was starving. The 2.5 stars is for the food. Don't get me wrong, the sushi was great, but the story continues. I ended up getting another order of shrimp tempura and spider roll. They were great, or maybe I was too hungry and would've thought anything in front of me was amazing? I order something to go for my boyfriend, that food comes, and then comes the bill. I came in here on a lunch time where they have the $12.99 sushi deal. It was a pretty decent deal and I would say try to order at least 3 rolls to maximize the return of your payment (wink). I started with a miso soup, it's not that great as I've tasted it better somewhere, but it works to prepare those taste buds for what is coming. I resisted the temptation to order the crab rangoon and dumpling so I can focus more on their sushi. The fried ones are really good. It's a little bit hot when they serve it so be careful not to swallow everything. I got the Chritmas Roll and Philadelphia Roll for the fried ones and those are really good, something you'll look forward to in the future visit. They could have done better with the tempura roll, you really can't tell it's a shrimp tempura if you won't see that tail end. I wish they could do it better on that. A regular stop for us when we're in STL. Before I get into how's the food is let's talk about the interior. Can't beat the atmosphere ifyou're looking for a small, comfortable place, but it's nothing fancy. Don't think it's it will be a first date place if you're looking to impress. Everything is in its place though so, like I said, it's comfortable. For the food, it's good, especially for a somewhat cheap sushi place. Got to hand it to them they really have a good system. Hand them a menu sheet with your selections on it and within five-ten minutes your food is at your table. I appreciate the extensive menu for the fact it's all you can eat. Just compare this other sushi places and you'll find the selection is more than adequate. Kind of like a "try it and see if you like it" portion sizes. Little there I've not liked within all the things I've ever picked. Most of the extra stuff is also good, apart from the sushi itself, like the tempura veggie appetizers, dumplings, etc. Not a big fan of the miso soup which, this last time especially, was very strong and off-putting for me. Oh and when you order anything tempura it comes out of the kitchen HOT! Put the tempura veggies in your mouth right away and you'll be blowing fire lol Quite good service, as well. Right as we'd gotten there the 5 it 6 times we have been we'd gotten seated right away, drinks orders taken right away, order put through and received all in about fifteen minutes. So we've never had a rude staff member on top of it. Take a nice lunch break one day and go there to try it out (it's a bit cheaper than dinner) Under budget for as-much-as-you-can-stuff food. OMG this place is delicious! A group from work and I went to Sushi Ai for some tasty sushi. We all ordered a variety of yummy meals and they were all excellent! I ordered the spicy tuna roll. It was amazing! Every bite was as good as the last. I only wish I had more. I also ordered the soft shell crab tempura. I am a huge fan of the soft shell crab and it is nearly impossible to find this around here. It was so good! With a menu like Sushi Ai, there are so many choices! I don't think you can go wrong. I finally got around to coming to this fairly new Sushi restaurant, and I really found it to be a great place. Now, comparing it to Drunken Fish is like comparing a Camry to a Porsche. The Camry will get you there, but the Porsche will get you there with a little style and an emptier wallet. Sushi Ai is like sushi's Camry. It's a solid meal, it tastes good, you get a lot for a decent price, and there is the danger of the brakes going out causing you to overeat. I recommend this place for a group lunch. One of those Friday afternoon get-togethers where the week is really done for everyone by noon, and you are all just treading water to get to 5pm. Grab a bunch of people, get a table, and belly-up to a $9.99 all you can eat sushi buffet. The buffet selection is good. There are 15 sushi selections, 18 rolls, and a couple of appetizers. The pieces are a bit smaller than your higher-end places, but it doesn't matter because you can order as much as you want! The staff was efficient. I was able to get in there at noon, order 2 plates of food, have some comfortable conversation, and then get out of there in 40 minutes. Not too shabby. It may not look like it from the outside, but there is plenty of seating in this clean, nicely decorated store. So, to sum up, Sushi Ai is good.
