Did take out for the first time and ordered 4 sushi's they were shoved into a container that was to small so when I took it out of the bag it was not the look of people that are proud of what they produced. the taste was as bad as the the look the California roll was made earlier in the day and the tempura was not done. This was our go-to Japanese place for some time now. No more. They are going through a "stage" like they did a few years ago. They have cut the quality of the proteins served on the combo lunch to INEDIBLE. The steak was so tough I could not bite a piece off to eat, the scallops were simply aged out. Scary. I have to say the fried rice, veggies, noodles, salad and soup were ok. That's something that can happen, but when I return the dish and I still get charged full price, that's not right. The server looked at me like she didn't understand, so I complained in Japanese. I don't think she understood that, either. It will be a couple of years before we try it again. We had called ahead of time to see if we could place a large order on NYE and they were very happy & kind over the phone and assured us we could order online on their website when they opened on NYE and place the order for a specific pickup time. 1) ordering online was seamless 2) as soon as I placed the order they called to confirm the order and pickup location and how I wanted the hibachi cooked 3) everything was ready on time 4) everything was as we ordered Overall our favorite foods of the night were: The hibachi noodles The salmon nigiri The white fish nigiri The white tuna nigiri The new england roll Some of the sushi was bland, the edamame shells fell apart, and the fried rice was flavorless. After being seated and taking our drink orders, we were almost immediately served a complimentary starter of what seemed like a shrimp tempura roll with a Mayo type sauce. Reminded me of a non spicy Bang Bang shrimp that Bonefish Grill serves. It was quite good and a perfect starter portion. We ordered assorted sashimi a la carte with a side of steamed rice and the Katsu Chicken lunch special that also included steamed rice. Clear soup arrived quickly along with the side salad that accompanies the Katsu meal. Both orders came out quickly and were fresh, expertly prepared and delicious. My rating here is in part an "A for effort" type of situation, but overall a sound choice for sushi--especially if you're thinking more Americanized sushi. Allow me to explain. I came for lunch and the restaurant wasn't busy. The waitress very friendly and prompt and I asked her once I glanced over the menu if their shumai were homemade and she said no. I appreciated her honesty there. Given the situation of frozen shumai not made in house, I opted instead for some traditional rolls and nigiri: tuna, yellowtail, rolls plus smoked salmon and tuna nigiri. They brought out a clear soup (fine) and small fried krab sushi appetizer on the house which was a nice touch except the appetizer was a) fried and b) covered in a cream sauce, so it's not something you want prior to a selection of fresh, raw, fish at all--it will overpower the delicate taste of anything to come after it. I realize in America people like to load their sushi with sauces and Southerners fry everything that's in the kitchen except the chef, but really now, come on. The fish were all fresh-tasting and fine. I asked for ponzu sauce and was given something which instead tasted like teriyaki sauce--very sweet. I asked the waitress about it and she said it was their own, chef-made, ponzu. I asked if it was yuzu-based or otherwise, and she returned with another, yuzu-based and store-bought ponzu which was much better. The first sauce would be absolutely fine as a teriyaki marinade, however, and I must wonder what they really use it for normally. I will say this waitress seemed concerned and very determined that I get the sort of sauce I wanted. She was very sweet and attentive, as was another waitress who was helping out. (Also, this chef is my spirit animal: not making the laborious shumai in-house but making his own ponzu--which is a more interesting and fun chore.) So, no complaints really on food, though their traditional sushi is a little limited in depth and scope. Their more Americanized rolls seem, not surprisingly, to contain all the usual suspects so to speak and should please people seeking that type of sushi. The atmosphere is classy, modern decor and a charming mural of anime-style cats, classic Chinese pop music on the soundsystem (yes, Chinese, and the staff appears also to be Chinese which is fine: rare it is that you find actual Japanese staff at American sushi places). If you want high-quality but Americanized sushi, I recommend Sushi 99, but if you want very traditional sushi, maybe look more elsewhere. I cannot say I was disappointed however overall. read more

This place was a win for sure! We were seated right away and soup brought out to us without even having to order anything. Then the ginger salad. We ordered our entrees, which were the Filet and Lobster and Ben wanted the Strip Steak but with Scallops so they adjusted the entree to what he wanted. Once ordered our server brought us our some sort of sushi roll and she told us that the chef made it for us. I am not sure what it was but we both loved it. It was served warmed and if it was something on their menu, it would be something that we would just order on its own. Our dishes came out and were so much food! My filet was cooked perfectly and so tender. Ben said his scallops were perfect and though his steak was also very good, it didn't hold a candle to my filet, of course. Our server was on point the entire time we were there along with our food. The prices were very reasonable to and we couldn't believe how much we were taking back to the hotel with us. We came upon Sushi 99 almost by accident. We were hungry and it was there. This clean and bright, utilitarian-looking restaurant is not very fancy. The kitchen is open and visible. All the effort has been put into the food and it was great. The service was friendly and attentive, but not intrusive. The sushi, reasonably priced was fresh and artistic. I particularly liked the unusual holiday roll (and we were on vacation! ) The entrees were large and flavorful but I could not finish. I wasn't really expecting the LARGE plate with a dozen moist scallops, fried rice, and noodles that arrived after the soup and a nice crispy salad with a ginger dressing. The $21 price for the dinner was more than reasonable. If I lived here, I would return often. read more

Found this place because my friend and I wanted sake bombs! We walked in and there were only 3 people eating. We were seated and waited on instantly! They give you free clear soup and a fried Krab roll which was delicious! We both ordered the tuna poke bowl and it was soooo good. Love the location . Lunch tuna tataki- oil and thin pierces that did not melt in your mouth. Hibachi steak and chicken- fried rice had no flavor the noodles were meh, the vegetables were ok. My parents have been ordering food from Sushi 99 for awhile. So since we were taking dinner to their place we thought we would give it a try. I called placed my order, they told me 25 minutes. When I arrived the staff all had on masks, they took my payment, and then brought out my order. My parents each got a lunch special, it came with Rice, Noodles, a salad and miso soup. Mom had chicken and dad had steak and shrimp. My wife and I had sushi. We started with Tuna Tataki, it was fresh so they passed that test. Then we had several unique rolls. I have been in the restaurant /service industry almost my entire adult life so, I do not publicly give negative criticism nor is it something that I generally report to the franchise itself because: this subject cannot be taken lightly - One must consider numerous factors that could affect every individual or other circumstances to the situation. Being in the position of Server, relying on cash tips to supplement my low hourly wage, I have been in the position where a cook (who came to work angry for some personal reason) made my guests' entrees subpar OR some equipment was not functioning properly - these things that I could not fix or control; out of my hands. The average guest, somehow still furrowed their eyebrows upon the apologetic smile of their attentive, fun, witty, and charming server to leave and embarrassingly LOW tip or, (as I preferred to the alternative choice of a single penny, face down) nothing at all. It is from these many years of Ups & Downs - wonderful regular customers & those who walk in the door with a chip on their shoulder that would not go away for any reason at all - that I have chosen to remain anonymously silent and EXTREMELY polite to workers in this very stressful, underappreciated industry. All of this being said, Here starts the actual review. I am sad to say that I am getting ready to throw out a hard earned $35 ! Since my husband and I have neither worked full-time since March, we takes very little for granted these days. A night on the town that is not from the dollar value menu at McDonald's is a very rare treat. Even then, I am scouring the mail inserts for coupons. So, it is in my heaviest heart that I am tossing an entire meal from a Japanese Steakhouse - sans only the few pieces of shrimp and chicken from the Hibachi carton. Sadly I cannot even get my dogs to do more than a sniff-n-lick. SOOOO.....that says enough right there doesn't it? To add insult to injury, we also wasted a whole dinner serving of our little fellas by mixing their grain-free, expensive-as-crap food with the broth from THAT ummm, soup! (Our big guy is unfortunately allergic to gluten so we have to buy it or he breaks out in hideous hives, poor baby The website gave me a lot of hassle and, by the time I completed the order, it appeared that the store wasn't accepting any deliveries any longer. I had to completely redo the order and I was frustrated because I felt like the proprietors could post that information; I'm probably not the only one who has wasted time on that. I quickly got over it, . The restaurant phoned us back and asked if we wanted the white sauce for an extra charge. My husband politely declined and made sure that they had received the rice instructions, double checked about the egg rolls (after all, that was the whole reason for the order) and let them know that I should be arriving at the store any second. I picked up the order. The worker was argumentative with me for absolutely no reason which I felt was strange. She was upset over the color of duck sauce, something I had no concern about. I told her to keep the change anyway because it was close to closing time and I remember those long days. I took the bag and went straight home. We opened it and we were very upset with the presentation of the meal. It looked like something I could have slopped together on my own, we could have hated it and thrown it away and I wouldn't have charged us $35. Normally neither of us fuss with the service industry, not about everything anyway but since the restaurant had discussed the order with my husband TWICE, he called in the attempt at a resolution. The conversation was brief and one sided. They were uninterested in anything about us after money made it into their hands. The entire order, and I do mean EVERY ITEM was either greasy, gummy, fatty, burnt, or, hard. Except the soup. I forgot that it was just like mucous. It had the look and texture of someone who had blown their nose into the bowl. We both went to bed pretty angry and very hungry. Life has been challenging on relations enough, this was the worst experience I have ever had with a restaurant. I wish I had the money back for milk, coffee, and lunch meat.
