Ethan was our chef, and even though he looked 15, he haf clearly been doing this awhile and is good at his job. We asked for some recommendations and were pleased with his suggestions. We got a special roll not on the menu, and the double tuna. We also ordered a tuna poke bowl, sake and green tea. The place was packed, and our other server was friendly but a little hard to find at times. The restaurant itself is filled with interesting art. It is always fun to have a good meal and get to appreciate the decor. The rolls were a little smaller than other places, definitely less rice, meaning more flavor. We came on a Friday night and were able to sit at the sushi bar until a table was available. My husband had the old fashioned, I had The Sword and my mother in law had the martini. We were all happy with our choices. My husband has a gluten allergy. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about what he could have, and what modifications could be made. In the end he got the Buddha bowl and really enjoyed it. I opted for a vegetarian specialty roll (Jasmine's garden I believe) and a side of chicken fried rice. So good. We decided to check out Fugu Sushi. They opened at 5pm we got there at 5:03pm and their parking lot was already full, plenty of parking across the street. There were maybe 2 tables empty on their outdoor patio so we got a table outdoors. Our server Arden was very friendly, he took our drink order which was a glass of Cabernet for both of us Happy Hour was all night so our glass of wine was 1/2 price. We also put in for the happy hour appetizer Bang Bang Bites. We were served our drinks and the bang bang bites which were delicious, I never had a fried rice cake before and with the shrimp, avocado and spicy sauce delicious! We also ordered from the happy hour menu the spicy tuna roll, shrimp tempura roll, California roll, maki roll and fried oyster roll. Just wow! I been on the hunt to find the perfect sushi spot in daytona and I found the one! This place has a very chic but sexy feel to it. The decor and aesthetic is intimate and I loved that they had outdoor seating too! Arden our server was phenomenal on guiding us through the menu. My favorite app was crispy rice . So delish yummy and the portion was big. The tofu came in second place also 10/10. Whatever sauce they had for it had me dipping my sushi rolls in. Sand crab was the winner for the sushi rolls. But... fabulous food. Miso soup expert here - and I may say: best miso I had on US mainland so far. Happy hour by the way is 5 to 6 each day and all day on Wednesday. Fugu served the best sushi we have had in Florida to date, hands down! This time we arrived promptly at 5p for happy hour and were not disappointed. The portions, prices, and creations delighted. Our favorite was the crispy rice cubes topped with bang bang shrimp. Nigiri as well as rolls were perfect and consistently delicious. They are very accommodating for gluten free needs, and even alerted me to ingredients I was not aware contained gluten (yuzu). This is, by far, the best restaurant for sushi and other Japanese food. Great place for a date or to take visitors. We've been here a few times and it have never disappointed. We ordered the fried rice w/ shrimp. I ordered the Nagiri w/ spicy tuna roll. Everything is always so fantastic. The sushi is the freshest in town. My wife loves the rice. She says it's the best. It pains me to write this review but I have to give Fugu a low rating. Specifically because of chef JD. My entire table I was with got food poisoning from fugu and when I called to report the incident the day after they actually asked if I was another person who had also called in earlier about their food poisoning too. When I first reported the incident chef JD called me back and said he would process a refund, without me even asking for one, which I was very pleased and applauded his customer service. After a few weeks had gone by I didn't see a refund so I reached out and he never responded to me. Ive called and texted and it's been radio silent - he has ghosted me. I am still giving them 2 starts since the staff during our dinner was very sweet and very accommodating given I had 3 children with me. Well be trying other sushi spots and will Not be returning to Fugu. read more

Fantastic. My wife and I sat at the bar for dinner overlooking the intercostal on 3/19/25. The quality of the sushi met and or exceeded my snobby New York expectations. Fine sushi pared with delicious cocktails set the tone for a fabulous meal. My wife ordered for us as she typically does when we go for sushi. She gets what she likes and I eat all of it. The sashimi was deliciously fresh as was everything else. The owner came over to us and was a very friendly, cool kinda guy. Interested in our northern feedback, we shared with him how wonderful our first experience had been at his establishment. When I come back to this Ormond Beach area, Fugu will be a necessary stop. Maybe next time, Brian will have that wagu ready for me! Get that rooftop going! Overall a divine dining experience. You should try it. Best sushi in the area! I come from NYC so the sushi doesn't compare, but it is the best one out of all the sushi restaurants in the area. I loved that they can make most rolls gluten free - including a spider roll which has a deep fried soft shell crab inside. Our waitress was very nice but overwhelmed. She had a lot of tables to tend to and the restaurant was fully packed. I loved the ambiance of the place, great decor for sure! We absolutely LOVE Fugu. This is our third time here and they never disappoint. The service and staff is unmatched and their food and drinks are always consistently good. The ambiance and decoration everywhere makes it feel like an upscale restaurant for decent prices. Chef JD came out to speak with us and our dog Nova who we brought along to their dog friendly patio, and brought her out her own complimentary meal to enjoy while we were eating. First time here and was recommended by my son who lives in Florida. The sushi we had here was FRESH and tasty. We loved all of the dishes we ordered. Chicken karaage was crispy and tender. Loved how it was on the thinner side. Agedashi tofu was perfect. There sauce had the perfect taste to it. All of the sushi rolls we had were delicious. You really didn't need to dip in soy sauce. Obviously I dipped it in just a little soy with wasabi just for an added spice. Definitely will come back to this restaurant when we visit my son again. read more

It is a great place to bring guests, and right in Ormond Beach. The sushi was fine. Nothing wrong with it, just not Wow. Yes, it was more expensive than other places but you pay for the ambience and experience too. Service was fine. We got Fugu roll, spicy tuna roll and spider roll. Spider roll is a test case that we order in every sushi restaurant. They were all good, nothing was OMG. The shoshito pepper appetizer was excellent. The scallops nigiri were fresh. I just think coming from the West where there is so much competition for Japanese fare that we may be expecting more. The cooked food on the web site and on this site looked good, so it seems a good place if you have a combination of raw and not raw eaters. The Gyoza to start was sweet and tasty. It comes with an Applewood citrus ponzu as the base. 5 pcs We ordered the Fugu, Happy Ending, Tomoka and Ormond By The Sea rolls. The Fugu is tuna, salmon, Alaskan snow crab, avocado and asparagus wrapped in cucumber (which was a first for me). It was a very refreshing and light roll. The Happy Ending is Alaskan snow crab topped with baked assorted seafood, scallions, masago, sweet soy and spicy mayo. This was most definitely our least liked roll and we won't be ordering it again. There was no spice to it at all and the sweet was a bit too sweet. Something about this roll just made both of our tongues say, no thanks. Ormond By The Sea is Alaskan snow crab, avocado, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, scallion and something they call Seoul sauce which I swear tastes exactly like Catalina dressing with a little rice wine added. Tomoka which was our absolutely most favorite roll and we will get again is yellowtail, scallion, cucumber, cream cheese, wrapped in a crispy spring roll skin and flash fried. It also has Wasabi tobiko, Wasabi honey and lime zest. Though we didn't see the desserts on the menu, we ended up ordering the cheesecake with Raspberry sauce which he absolutely adored and the Matcha torte which is chocolate cake, Raspberry cream, another layer of chocolate cake then a layer of matcha. Overall we were very happy with our food. I had to ask for Wasabi which normally comes standard with sushi. Our server was friendly and made sure our sodas stayed full. Stopped in for dinner after a local gave it a solid recommendation. So I wanted to love it despite the 3.5 star Yelp review. I would say some things are a hit and others a miss which has me going for 3 stars on this one. We started with the gyoza and shishito peppers. The peppers were raw and came out first, which almost never happens whenever I order these out. Like beyond crunchy and just inedible. We also order a couple of rolls. The surf and turf roll was tasty, but has a lot of flavors going on, from the lobster to the beef and the chimichurri sauce on top. I think with a different sauce this would have been a home run. I think sauce on top of the rolls in general was a major factor for me. One had no sauce and could have used it, other sauce was so sweet it took away from the fish. Overall, the service was great and the sushi was fresh but I think some of the combos in the rolls can be reworked. read more

Fugu is one of our absolutely favorite places to go out to eat. We're within walking distance so this is usually our go-to dinner spot when we decide to eat out spontaneously. We're early diners so we've never had a problem getting a table. My husband really enjoys the sushi here due to the freshness and quality of the ingredients. You can get real crab in the crab rolls, unlike a lot of other places in the area which use imitation crab. He'll usually order at least one or two of the happy hour rolls plus something off the standard menu. I typically order gyoza, the Fugu greens salad and the chicken fried rice as I'm not too big on sushi. The food is delicious every time! Its kind of a family style dining set up in the sense that they just bring out dishes as they are ready vs in any specific order. We've also had drinks here a few times. Good selection of wine and whiskey plus they make good cocktails. The decor of the restaurant is really fun with the blacklight paintings.
