Prototypical neighborhood omakase place. Easy to get a reservation, quiet, huge selection of excellent fish at budget prices.

I love a good omakase and we walked past this place randomly one night and it looked so cute inside so we very easily booked a reservation for 8 pm that Saturday (they literally had every single time slot open). We were seated right away and were offered a table at the side of the restaurant or seats at the sushi bar. My regret of the evening was not sitting at the sushi bar counter, I think that takes the experience from good to great being able to see the chefs create each piece and put each bite in front of you. Instead our 15 piece omakase ($100) was served in two "courses" and made it a little bit less special. I was also a little disappointed the meal didn't come with dessert or anything to sort of "finish it off" the way I've had at other omakase places. For $100 a person I do want to feel like it is a really special experience, which i think this place lacked. The other reason I knocked a star was the unbelievably obnoxious table of men next to us who were screaming the entire evening, being rude, making crude comments, and not once did the staff say anything to them. It sort of ruined our experience unfortunately. I will likely come back to give this place another try. read more

The rice is a bit hard / potentially undercooked. And too much soy sauce makes the sushi taste salty. For me the cheaper price point doesn't justify coming here again. The service is horrendous here! My friends and I came here on a weekday night. There were empty tables, so it wasn't too busy. The nice thing about this place is that it's BYOB (no corkage fee) and there's a liquor store across the street. We brought 2 bottles of wine and decided to order the Omakase. Their "Omakase" included 15 pieces of Nigiri and a handroll for $100. Our table of 4 decided to all go-in on this. So, for Omakase, I'm used to sitting at the bar and watch the sushi chef make the pieces in front of me. It's also nice being able to engage in some small conversation. I'm also used to getting one piece at a time. At Sushi 456, we were seated at a table (not at the bar) and was served all the pieces over two plates. This was definitely not the type of Omakase experience I'm used to (or what most New Yorkers are used to). It might as well have just been called a "sushi platter of 15 pieces" on their menu. The worst part of the dinner experience was that we had just finished our "Omakase" and was just finishing up our last bottle of wine. Not even 90 minutes into the dinner, the waitress came over to our table and told us that another group was waiting. We had just paid a $500 bill. We weren't even there for that long and there was another table that was also finishing up. From reading other reviews, it doesn't seem like this was a one-off incident. In general, it's not great hospitality to be rushed through (a pricey) dinner. The service was severely lacking and the experience was definitely not one I'd consider a traditional Omakase experience. I would not recommend this place. read more

I believe it may have been the owner of the restaurant - she more or less yelled at us to move our seats a few times including once during our meal as we were eating. It was bizarre. The first time she said a party of 4 was coming and even though we were at the end of the sushi bar she made us go to the other side (even though we were at the end of sushi bar). No party of 4 showed up. Later she added a chair to fit 2 more people in and made us slide down the sushi bar while we were in the middle of our meal. We ordered a bottle of sake and it was never refilled by staff, only ourselves. Food is pretty good, but that experience definitely makes me question going back. Was a little afraid when we walked in at 6:45pm and were the only people in the restaurant. As soon as we sat, we began our journey of super fresh and delicious sushi. (And the place quickly filled up...) I got the 10 piece omakase + hand roll ($70) and my husband got the 15 piece omakase + hand roll ($100). Everything was so good, we ordered seconds of certain fish after our omakase was over. The standouts were the bonito with a crispy garlic chip on top, the king salmon quickly torched and brushed with wasabi and soy, and the toro hand roll which had scallions and Japanese yellow pickles chopped into it giving it a nice crunch. The eel avocado also had a surprising little crunch of a couple hidden small rice balls underneath. There were garnishes such as a little tiny pieces of shiso, some yuzu or a brush of soy, but nothing was overpowering. All done very very lightly to let the fish shine through. The rice was also pleasantly different from most sushi places I've been. Our hot tea and water were continuously filled to the top. Excellent service and friendly sushi chefs. This place is a hidden gem in West Village! BYOB!! We had 15 courses, fish was really fresh, and loved every piece we had. Chef was friendly and we just loved that we found a nice/good/affordable omakase place in WV other than sushi on Jones. only minus was.. we were sitting right in front of the door and people kept asking chef if they had seats available as they walked in. Excellent BYOB omakase in NYC (though they charge a hefty corkage fee). Sushi 456 is what good sushi should be- fresh fish with a simple preparation. Many NYC omakase places doctor up the piece of fish too often with caviar or truffle or some flavor that I have no interest in accompanying a piece of nigiri. When I go for sushi, I simply want to taste the flavors of the fish with maybe some wasabi, soy, or ponzu at most. Sushi 456 delivers on that. The service is not the best and the corkage fee was more than my bottle of wine (which needs to change if they're not going to serve alcohol as it is a deterrent to coming here). That aside, I absolutely recommend this place for a fantastic meal that will not disappoint! read more

This is a great little spot in West Village focused on nigiri with a large selection of standard and more adventurous fish, I think someone that appreciates sushi at any level can find something they like. I did notice several people order the wagyu which was well seared and I was really impressed by the quality of the tuna, the otoro provably had as much marbling as the beef! There is also uni from multiple locations (japan and california when we were there) for the sea urchin lovers out there. For now it is BYOB which is....amazing!! Bring your fave sake or wine that pairs with sushi I will say for the price the omakse is a little small compared to other spots around the city, its also just nigiri and a handroll no little appetizers or sashimi, and the pace was wayyyy too fast for me. We coulx have been out of there in 20 minutes if we kept with the chef's pace. We had attended a Jazz benefit for Ukraine and had just seen some AMAZING players making music in public for the first time in 2 years. It got late and we were hungry and on the way to another restaurant, we walked by on a Friday night at 10:00 PM and found a table. While it looked very crowded, the staff made sure to get us a comfortable table. It was SUPER loud: the crowd was young, heavy drinking, and noisy. BUT: they LEFT! The service was fine...started slow, but then very attentive. The menu is good but small, and really focused on the fish--which is a GOOD THING. We ordered a LOT of sushi and sashimi. Their scallops are flown in from Hokkaido and were REALLY impressive--super buttery. Their fatty tuna that night in the fatty tuna rolls was REALLY oily and tasty. Really, all the fish was handled very well. I can't say they did anything else particularly special...but that is the point: we wanted REALLY good sashimi...and that is what we got. There is a store next door to grab beer or wine and a liquor store across the street. They were very quick to bring us beer and cocktail glasses for our drinks. That's all you need: a little beverage, a lot of great fish, and for the noisy kids to leave!! I don't think this will become anyone's darling, but I hope they develop enough of a following to stay around for years to come. I will be back. read more

I stopped by for lunch when I was actually headed to another sushi restaurant a few blocks away. Hands down one of the best sushi I have had in the city especially for the price range. I ordered 10pc omakase, and add-on individual sushi pieces including Zuke, Seared Salmon, and Ikura. Each sushi was prepared delicately with perfect seasoning in a way to enhance the quality of fish. I also liked that this place has few different price tiers (Lunch sushi starts from 30 something and Omakase starts from 50). Got take out from this place and while it was pricy it was worth every penny. The nigiri is absolutely perfectly done. Perfect amount of rice and perfect amount of fish.
