It is definitely a hot spot on a Saturday afternoon. Multiple people came in as she was packaging my flower which made it take more time for her to finish packaging. I ordered a memorial floral arrangement almost two weeks in advance. I specified time of service, when I needed the flowers, and height of floral arrangement. On day of service I went to Surroundings and was told that floral arrangement wasn't yet ready because "flower truck hadn't arrived." I said I needed flowers within 90 minutes as we were leaving for service. When I later came back to pick up the arrangement, I immediately saw that the flowers were bruised and the clear vase water was dirty. I expressed my concern and shop assistant said she would get manager. Manager did not bother to even show himself but relayed via the shop assistant that Surroundings would refund a portion of the order. As there was no time, I had no choice but to accept flowers and try to see we could salvage the arrangement ourselves. In doing so, it became clear that Surroundings was foisting on us old flowers for which Surroundings (even after the refund) was charging an exorbitant price. The arrangement was not professional. There had been no attempt to properly dress or clean the flowers. It had the appearance of being hobbled together by the shop assistant because Surroundings couldn't be bothered to organize a decent product for which they were paid a premium price for an important event. Failures: - Didn't appear to have fresh flowers, passed off tired, old, bruised flowers without admitting problem - Manager didn't bother to show his face and accept responsibility for mistake or apologize for ruining memorial arrangement - Didn't follow prior instructions on arrangement height requirements (didn't even have ruler or measuring tape to confirm height - Delivered arrangement bore no signs of being prepared by professional florist - Refund offered, but frankly even then overpriced for what was delivered. Left customer with no options at last minute. Conclusion: - I tried to buy local. I regret it. - Cannot recommend. read more

I drive past this floral shop 5 times a week on my way home and finally decided to surprise my wife today with a bouquet of flowers. I stopped in and 3 warm and welcoming gentleman greeted me. With nothing in mind on what I would get specifically (besides hydrangeas because of our wedding day 4 years ago) they asked me what my budget was and bam, Carlos began gathering my arrangement. My order was so simple, and I went to the shop in-person to place it. I asked for a small, compact, premium bouquet in a short vase to be delivered to my mother's office on Capitol Hill - something she could put on her desk the week of Mother's Day. We even selected the size of vase to be used for the order. While I was there, I filled out the card to be delivered with the order. I paid top dollar for premium flowers only. The person who helped me was very reassuring, that he would make sure my mother received the best arrangement possible. We also agreed that someone from Surroundings would call to confirm the order before it left the shop. The order was never confirmed by the shop, and the card did not arrive with the arrangement. There was nothing on the flowers that indicated they were for her. So instead of my mother appreciating the gift, she had to awkwardly ask around, among family and friends, to figure out who the arrangement was from and offer that it might actually be someone else's because there was no card addressed to her. Because the shop never called to confirm the order, I had no assurance that the delivery was going to be made and that the card would go with it. And sure enough, it didn't. I've called twice during business hours since the flowers arrived to speak to a manager, and nobody answers the phone. This is 2017. Any florist in a major U.S. city should have mastered flower delivery by now. Somehow, Surroundings D.C. has fallen short. I would not recommend the shop to anyone. read more

Stay far, far away. Charles is a charming owner, but cannot deliver on his promises. I had been planning my wedding and after a lengthy discussion we had agreed on a timeline for a proposal and next steps. He delayed and delayed until I was seriously nearing the date. He made excuses as to why he could not deliver and then in the end blamed me for asking him to stick to the timeline he had offered. I would not trust him or his business for your floral needs. There are many terrific florists in DC, I would seriously recommend you go elsewhere. Philippa Tarrant Floral Design, who we contracted with in the end, was just amazing! read more

I came in to make a consultation appointment for landscaping. I requested a time of 2:30pm, but the person helping me apparently wrote down 2:30-3pm (but neglected to mention that to me). When I called at 2:45 on the day of to inquire where they were (um, because in my book they were 15 mins late), I was told Charles just left was on his way. When I asked why no one called me to let me know he was running late, they said, "oh, I dunno. He was doing other stuff." (At this point the person on the phone should have checked the calendar and told me according to them the window was a half hour & he wasn't actually late.) I don't have patience for companies who (in my book) are late, so I canceled the appointment. I immediately received a call from Charles who kept saying he wasn't late because he has 2:30-3pm written down. Um again, no one bothered to confirm that time frame with me... And, did it ever occur to him they actually wrote down a half hour appointment starting at 2:30? I told him point blank that being late isn't ok with me and after some bs back and forth he finally said, "It's probably best we don't work together. I've made *thousands* of people happy but clearly you're very different from *normal* residents on Capitol Hill. Other people are more laid back. I'm sorry we couldn't make you happy." (Click went the phone.) Any owner who's petty enough to insult a potential customer isn't one I want to give my dollars to. read more

After calling 4 times to confirm delivery of flowers, only to be told each time that they were "just about ready to leave." Surroundings completely transformed my Capitol Hill front yard! They removed the old ground cover, pruned back the oak leaf hydrangeas and the Japanese maple, removed weeds, added topsoil and mulch. The plants Charles and Francisco put in are excellent - dwarf mondo grass, ajuga, hostas, Japanese anemones, and gold splash euonymous. They also installed easy to work in-ground sprinklers. The entire job was done in two - yes, 2 - days! The guys did the work while I was at the office and I am more than happy! All debris removed, nice lay-out of plantings, expert understanding of what I was looking for - low maintenance plants and a variety of color. Charles and Francisco are a delight to work with. As others have commented, the owners are sweet/friendly, but we lost $ trying to work with them and ultimately came away super frustrated. Either not attentive to or just unable to follow directions, won't stick to a timeline/respond in a timely manner... Aside from this, their designs skew toward VERY modern (I just thought odd) and are probably better suited to business orders rather than arrangements for a specific/personal occasion. Last word of warning: I've been given loose-stem flowers picked up same-day from their storefront, and found them molded, and the petals fell off immediately. I had heard great things about Surroundings and my wife has used them several times for events. I ordered an arrangement for our 10th anniversary and as I write this they have not been delivered - it is 4:45. They had a question about the address, but didn't call me until 3:30 to get clarification (I ordered the flowers days in advance) and now are saying they are held up in traffic. Had I ordered the flowers "just because" or it was a rather inexpensive arrangement, no big deal, but I would have appreciated a several hundred dollar arrangement for a special occasion being delivered while someone is still at my wife's office to accept the delivery - not to mention while my wife is still there to receive them. UPDATE: The flowers, which do look nice, were delivered shortly after 5:00 and the owner called to give me his personal cell phone for the future - but we still had to alter our drinks / dinner plans so she would be at the office to get the flowers. read more

I find it incredibly suspicious of Yelp that they seem to have filtered only the good reviews for this adorable little local flower shop. We live down the block from Surroundings and it's our go-to place for birthday, anniversary and all-occasion flowers. Charles, the owner, is nice as can be and the flower arrangements he and his staff do are beautiful. Plus, they last for weeks. Not so sure what the negative reviews are about. I have used Surroundings many times, sometimes just to grab a few loose flowers to stick in a vase, and sometimes for custom arrangements. I have always been more than pleased with the customer service and quality. The flowers last a long time, the owner is always pleasant and ready to help and the arrangements are beautiful. I hired Surroundings for landscaping because I liked that they are a neighborhood business, but it was a mistake. Their work was poorly done, they didn't show up to do the work when they had said they would, and they pressured me to pay before the work was completed. Surroundings came to my home to: 1. Remove the thick clay in my backyard and replace it with "grade A topsoil". Although I'm sure they removed some of the clay, they didn't remove much of it -- water still pools in my backyard, and after a few rain showers the clay had bubbled back to the surface. The thin layer of topsoil they added was chalky--not the quality they'd suggested. 2. Build a custom gate door with a lock and a lattice top. The gate has started to sag so much that the door doesn't swing easily. The lock was installed so far from the edge of the door that the gate can still be pushed open while "locked" because the bolt barely reaches into the frame. The lock they installed required a key to exit the backyard, which violates fire code, so I had to hire a locksmith to change it to a flippable knob. Although the flowers they stock in their retail space are admittedly above average, their landscaping was half-hearted, and shouldn't have required so much follow-up and reminders from me to get it done. read more

I am floored by the negative reviews of this neighborhood shop. I also find it a bit suspicious that every single 5 star review has been filtered (thus why I only gave them 4, although I find the service to be 5 stars). I only had my first personal experience with Charles and Surroundings recently but for months my fiance has been bringing home arrangements from them almost bi-weekly on his way home from Eastern Market. They have always been lovely and lasted quite sometime and even when one began wilting sooner than expected, we called and were told to come get a new arrangement on the house. We recently stopped in on our way home and I got to meet Charles and being a typical Capitol Hill neighborhood shop he had struck up a friendship with my fiance as, I presume, he does with most of his customers. We were looking to get an indoor palm and he helped us select the perfect one. We had also recently purchased a beta fish and were hoping to give him a vase with some water plants to swim in - Charles sold us a great vase and gave us some spider plant babies for free. They have a great selection of plants and flowers and some of the arrangements I have seen around the shop are simply lovely. We are certainly life-time customers! read more

I ordered a birthday bouquet for a friend who lives four blocks away from Surroundings. Happy to pay the $10 delivery fee. But...not so happy to pay $85.00 for a very specific arrangement, heavy on white hydrangeas, a little blue with some irises, and filler. My friend was so sweet and sent me a photo. There were 7 stalky irises, two hydrangeas and not much else. I was so embarrassed! Even after I called, Charles wouldn't answer my phone and only texted me. Really poor customer service and a shoddy product. Won't be using or recommending him again. read more

I'd say we've had mixed experiences with this place over the past few months. On one hand, they sold us firewood that wouldn't burn and took forever to get back to us with a quote on landscaping (which we ultimately decided to do ourselves). However, the fresh hydrangeas that I bought here lasted for weeks, and we had a fantastic experience buying our well-priced, fresh Christmas tree here. Their flowers aren't cheap, but I think you get what you pay for. It's nice to have this place in the neighborhood, and convenient if you want to stop in and pick up some flowers on the way home from work. read more

Charles and his team are very capable and excellent at their work. The only drawback is just how busy they are. It took us a couple of months from the design appointment to getting the work done, but once it was finished it looked great!! Surroundings replaced the sod in the front yard and tree box, dug up the backyard and put in all new shrubs and grasses, including wire for climbing vines and a remaining wall. They did a great job overall making everything look nice and the plants are healthy and of great quality Even more importantly, when my daughter's elementary school was doing a study unit on flowers, her class was able to visit Surroundings and learn all about what a florist does for a living. Charles is a great contributor to the community and we love supporting Capitol Hill businesses. read more

I've worked with Surroundings on several events now and they've been nothing but reliable and personable with every experience. Additionally, I've been at events at the Capitol, Kennedy Center and many charity events for which Surroundings donated arrangements for - making it clear that I'm using not only the most qualified, but good, community-oriented professionals. Frequently, I've even had some odd requests for rare or exotic plants and flowers and Charles has always delivered on his promises. I kept stopping in the store and asking for the shipping number so I could check w/ UPS online. They never gave it to me, and kept promising they call me with it, and I stupidly believed them. Wow. What a disappointment. I had so hoped to write a great review here because this is a neighborhood place, but as other reviewers have noted, after a lot of exciting and charming promises, this place just does not deliver on its promises. After being sold on a holiday centerpiece that was twice the price of those on display, I really was excited and expected to pick up something pretty special. I came back the next day, 3 hours later than the agreed upon time, and it wasn't ready. I live a few blocks away so said I would stop by the next day. Still not ready...was told it only needed a bow and it was suggested that I go grab a coffee. But I said I'd just wait because how long can a bow take? Well, they obviously put the whole thing together while I was waiting. They just took a potted plant, attached a few cheap ornaments, and wrapped the pot in cheap tissue paper. It was truly hideous. I took it home, but the more I looked at it, the uglier it got, and the more annoyed I was that I'd been treated so shabbily. I took it back within the hour andI told them I'd just take one of the pre-made centerpieces. They didn't offer a refund of the difference in price even though I had paid twice the amount. Stay away from this place. What a terrible way to treat a new neighbor! read more

Last spring they completely redesigned and planted my front yard--did a beautiful job that included new brickwork and all new plants at a very good price. This year, my backyard was the project . . . a complete clean-up, moved some things, planted a great number of new things. Great work, great service, and again at a very good price. I ordered a large main table arrangement and two smaller end table arrangements for a party one week in advance, and they were beautiful and ready for pickup on time. When ordering, they were very helpful; we had a lengthy discussion about the colors of my home and the placement of the flowers so everything could be coordinated. I was looking for a corsage and boutonniere for my son's senior prom. Out of all the other florist in the area Surroundings were the ONLY ones to return my call. I speak with Glenda and she is a true professional . She knows her flowers. I make it to the shop and it is SO beautiful. On the spot for me, Glenda made the two beautiful pieces and in 15 minutes I had two fresh flower accessories and a HUGE smile. I will be using them every chance an opportunity arises!
