Had an old laser printer that needed an old school USB cable. Rather then buying on Amazon, thought I would check this place out. Oodles of electronic bits and bobbles when you walk right in. They have a whole shelf of different cables on aisle 2, including those old school USB cables that I was looking for. 3 cables for$6. Not bad, not bad. I ordered a 4700 µF 6.3 V capacitor from these guys. It took about two weeks to arrive, but when it got here, there was a thoughtful note enclosed saying "sorry for the delay - Mike" and they refunded me half of the shipping fee. I never called them to complain. I never even let them know it was taking too long for the part to arrive. They just preemptively provided the refund and the apology. additionally, even though I only ordered one capacitor, they sent me two. Probably just a "CYA" in case one of them was bad. Not sure if there is a new owner, but there are some comically priced items in this store. I saw a Hallicrafters SO 38 that was $75 a few months ago that is now $175, (probably needs restoration, another $100 or so.) There used to be a lot of items that were priced under $50. Some untested items were over $750. You can run your business how you want, but realize that most people shop there because they can find fairly cheap electronics for home projects. read more

I use to frequent Wacky Willies before Surplus Gizmos was a thing. Prices were on the hobby level. About 30% of what parts would cost in stores. Today, Surplus Gizmos seems to think their items are new with warranties and return options. I offered such good advice only to be met with flak. Of course, I offered this advice when the sales-person decided that the switch I got from the $1 box didn't belong in the $1 box. As a matter of fact, the statement was "This didn't come out of the $1 box!". My a$$ it didn't! Being called a liar and then renegotiating an item is not okay in my book. Bottom line, this used to be a good Christian seller of salvage junk. I will no longer patronize this establishment nor recommend anyone giving their goods to this organization. This kind of treatment of long time paying customers is the last straw. read more

Lots of components, electronic parts, linear actuators, Hi-freq cables, computer parts, really hard to get parts at really great prices. Parts to build robots, magnetic levitation devices, even a small freeze gun - so far it only works on a teaspoon of water but a larger version is in the works. They had just what I needed: special aluminum extrusions required for U235 encapsulation PLUS one of the missing parts for a micro-flux capacitor. BTW I'm much younger than my photo shows - (something went wrong with the original prototype) and I'm trying to get back on my original time line. THANKS SURPLUS GIZMOS. If you are building a robot, or a jetpack ("Where's My Jetpack?!?" - http://www.amazon.com/Wheres-My-Jetpack-Amazing-Science/dp/1596911360) this is the place to come. A gizmo is something that looks like it was designed for a purpose, but you might not know what exactly that purpose was. Its function might be hidden in the recesses of its interior. Usually it's made of aluminum, Teflon, stainless steel or silicon. Surplus means that probably a local high tech company used it for that hidden purpose, but then it became obsolete, and a hundredth of its original value, surplus. They have motors, pumps, actuators, positioners, electronic parts, power supplies, test equipment, wire, metal electronic boxes, computer parts of unknown functionality and the highly useful Dorkbot http://dorkbot.org/ breadboard. They are a good source for LED's including ultraviolet ones. They have metal dinosaur kits and robot kits. (It would be epic if these two ideas were combined!) Lego flashlights and "rare TIVO dolls". You can even order a blank stare for $.25, it's part number DOUB1. They have a YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/surplusgizmos, which might give you an idea. A website too. The store is packed to the ceiling. It's not Fair Radio, but they have a lot of obscure stuff for Portland. It would be most useful for people interested in Make Magazine http://makezine.com/, artists looking for weird things, gag gizmo gifts, people with a massive excess of time on their hands to build a robot, or the next startup geniuses. Walking into this store was like being a Fry's equivalent thrift store. Pretty much everything needed to build and customize vintage computer systems from CPUs to SCSI controller cards can be found here. I hope this place sticks around, because it seems like it's the only store of it's kind in Portland. There's lots of other electronic things too that I'm sure someone would find useful, but I have no idea what their utility is. Really cool place to go for vintage computer collectors. read more

This industrial park storefront had a nice assortment of electronic parts which are logically laid out. It appears mostly surplus; if you need an exact transistor or inductor or somesuch you might be better off ordering it online than digging through a bin here with your fingers crossed. You will have more fun digging and wandering, though! The prices are somewhere between cheap and slightly-more-than-retail, with the latter still reasonable if you need it in hand the same day. If you are not in need of exactitude...If you are looking for ideas or inspiration...the random element is here in spades: chip fab and assembly robots; laser assemblies, medical and laboratory equipment, specialized/obsolete computer gear, and much more are present in the back of the store. They have a good assortment of motors, slides, rails, and leadscrews for you homebrew CNC types. The staff are helpful and mostly friendly. Haggling (which I view as a holy rite at surplus places and Hamfests) did not seem like a popular move here, which is sad because it means less turnover for them in the long run. Maybe they want to run a museum, or maybe they do mark down stuff that doesn't sell over time; I haven't been there enough to know. Stopped by Surplus Gizmos after spotting a color mac in the window. I am not sure how to describe this shop...let me try: If a Fry's and the Boeing surplus store had a tiny baby...it would be Surplus Gizmos. The racks contains resistors, electronic bits and pieces, wiring, misc computer guts and weird do-dads. To describe a few: I saw those scanners the banks run deposit slips and checks through, old DSL routers, and safety helmets. The shop mainly sells hardware. In then end, I was lured there with the old mac and left empty handed. Everything is sold-as-is making any purchase seem overly risky. read more

Didn't get too much of a chance to look around. I came in for a specific tool that they didn't have, a very small torx which is hard to come by. I spoke with someone as soon as I walked in the door and just happened to be standing right next to the selection it would have been in. The two gentlemen that helped me were very nice and helpful. Since they didn't have what I was looking for they were happy to give me some alternative places to look. I will keep them in mind for the future! read more

Stopped in today with a "fringe" request - needed a ball smaller than a standard marble for a marble run I printed for my kid. Mouse balls were too big, and it seemed like we wouldn't find something, which would've been perfectly OK because I was also there for other things, but the guys didn't give up and busted open a potentiometer that had 8 mm bearings that work great! Lots of surplus and some new retail products. If you are into building things yourself this is the place to go. Mostly Electronics, electrical and electro-mechanical products with some mechanical. Some of the things I have purchased are misc hardware, a motor for my band saw, LED's and resistors for radio repair, Lego keychain flashlights, dvo meters, cable tester, heatshrink tubing. The store is clean, with things laid out by product by area. Staff is friendly and helpful. Let them know what you are trying to do and see what they can come up with to help. It is one of those places you want to swing by and browse once a month just to see what new things interest you. read more

Honestly the best place to buy any electronic components, hardware, really anything electronics based. Massive selection and very reasonable pricing. My experience with this store is quite large, I swing by on a weekly basis to get parts on the cheap. One thing I really enjoy about this store is that when I bring my oldest son in, they usually load him up on free stuff to take apart. Pricing is flexible too, and they offer Military/Veteran discounts; one of the only stores in the Beaverton/Hillsboro area that does this. The selection of components is really vast and cannot be understated. Every value you can think of for capacitors, resistors, diodes, transistors etc is in stock. I've never gone there and seen something out of stock, except Red LED strips, but other than that one thing, they're always topped off. The environment in the store is very friendly and willing to help. The staff are knowledgeable about most everything in the store and are very willing to help you find what you're looking for. This is one of the reasons I don't mind spending money in this store, because everytime I leave I always leave happy and thrilled to have swung by. Surplus Gizmos is just a great store, with really good pricing and availability on their products. When you want a store that satisfies a particular niche, Surplus Gizmos is definitely at the top of that list. I recently went in there asking for a specific item for my daughter. The guy at the counter was very courteous. He had to go ask somebody else and then came back telling me they didn't have any in stock and would have to get the owner's permission before they ordered anymore. So I'm standing there and he doesn't take my name and number as he should have so they could ask the owner about ordering more because I'm obviously an interested customer. He tells me to have a good day which is nice and all but the whole fact I wanted something they didn't have in stock, and it didn't seem like they cared much about asking the owner to order more. So when I left I just looked on a shopping website and found the exact item for over ten bucks cheaper. This store just lost a potential customer. read more
