I opted to rent Windswept Villas 101 from Surfside Realty for a quick Labor Day Weekend trip. This was not my first experience renting a condo in the Surfside area (most of which have been great), but it was my first time renting from Surfside Realty. I can say, without a doubt, that it will be my last.
Upon arrival to the unit, it was clear that Housekeeping had left many things incomplete. I would have believed that they had not been out to clean at all, but there was a strip over the toilet indicating that they had paid a visit after the last tenants' check-out. The laminate floors were gritty, there were visible footprints, corners showed clumps of hair, the couch showed crusty spots, and the sliding glass door was covered in thick layer of salt. There were still sheets on the bed (complete with stray hairs) and the mattress cover had bloodstains. Aside from the cleanliness grievances, the sliding door leading to the balcony had a broken handle and would not slide. The pullout couch mattress was not only uncomfortable, but unusable. It had a significant dip in the middle and a protruding wire that prevented its use.
Because we had arrived after 6:00pm, the time when the office closes, I called the contact number listed for 'after-hours'. I was directed to an answering service that dispatched a representative from Housekeeping. He brought two pillows, a mattress pad, and talked at length about how I should complain to management about the unit. He told me his staff would be around the following day and I could flag them down to come clean.
The next morning I went directly to Surfside Realty's office to talk with them about my concerns. The office staff began looking for other available units to which we could move. Because the manager, Travis, was not present, I waited for about an hour before the office staff told me they would have him call me when he arrived. A couple hours later I received a call from Travis asking about the nature of the issue. He communicated to me that Housekeeping indicated that they had completed the cleaning the night before and the issue was resolved. When I told him that was not the case, he said he would be moving us to a different unit within the building.
We waited about two hours before Travis told us the unit was ready. It was similar, but cleaner and actually functional. I was given an envelope, and enclosed was a gift certificate to a local restaurant that we would not be able to use due to dietary restrictions. On Monday upon returning the keys, I asked if it would be possible to give the gift certificate back and instead have that amount applied to our bill, even though the amount we were given was only about a third of what we paid for our first night. Travis raised his voice at me in the front office and told me that if I was unable to use the gift certificate it was my fault, because he had "done enough for me already". Not willing to continue being condescended, I gave him the certificate and left.
The worst part of the whole ordeal is how we were treated. When you rent a condo from a realty company, you expect your unit to be clean and functional. I am not bothered in the least by typical wear and tear, but this particular unit was not livable and did not meet basic standards of rentability. We spent over half of our trip cleaning, buying supplemental bedding, and waiting for Surfside Realty to give us what we had paid for in the first place. When I brought to light the fact that their end of the bargain hadn't been held up, I was made to feel greedy and wasteful of their time.
Here's the thing: you can't pass the buck and blame the condition of the unit on the owner while espousing 100% responsibility for management of the unit. You can't blame cleanliness issues on the Housekeeping company when you have employed that company and not accept liability when those issues arise. Lastly, fixing problems to give customers what they paid for is not generosity, it's your job. I was patient, understanding, and appreciative of their effort. All of that was marred, however, by the attitudes I encountered. read more
