Stopped in to grab an early dinner with a friend without a reservation and we're fortunate enough to get a patio seat despite it being busy. This is one of my favorite spots and favorite burgers in the city. My friend and I shared the cheeseburger and the chicken sandwich and fries. I had not had the chicken sandwich before, but will definitely be ordering it again as it was delicious. The burger continues to be one of my favorite in the area. If you're not super hungry, you can definitely share the fries. It's a pretty decent size portion! Our server Donika was super bubbly and friendly and one of the best servers I've had in a while! She had great recommendations and was quick and attentive. The spot is great time of year, but especially in the summer when they have the doors open! The inside bar is also so cool. Have been wanting to come here since they opened, but always forget about it behind the store. After seeing photos from a friend who stopped by, I decided to make a reservation and finally give the sidebar a try. The space is very nice. A little loud, but not so bad you can't have a conversation. I love the big windows along the side and being behind the storefront on the other side. For the food...fantastic. I saw arancini on the menu, which I can never say no to. These had a pea pesto, which was perfect for spring. I ended up getting the chicken sandwich for my dinner and had a couple fabulous cocktails. Since we stopped in for a birthday celebration, we were also treated to a delicious scoop of cake batter ice cream. Our server was delightful, very fast and incredibly friendly. I absolutely love this restaurant. I've been twice and brunch and twice for dinner. The cocktails are unique and tasty, and the food is always amazing. I'm pescatarian and there are a lot of veggie forward options to choose. My favorites are the hummus crudities plate (it's not boring I promise!), fondue, mussels, and the broccolini. This place is a hidden gem! Really good food and delicious drinks. I have had the burger here a few times. It's not overly fancy just a well executed burger. The fries are really good as well. The Easy Breezy drink was a special using Trakal Patagonian spirit which was a featured tasting inside the Surdyks store that day. It was super refreshing. The Desert Bloom was ridiculously good. Came here for some cocktails and light bites and was pleasantly surprised. Although on the pricier side, everything we tried was delicious! My friends got the charcuterie board for $30 which came with lots of different cheeses, meets, sourdough crackers, spreads, chocolate and walnut toffee. When I came I also noticed they had several booths out where patrons could sample different drinks which I appreciate since you might come across something you've been thinking about trying but get to taste first before deciding. Next door there is a fine cheese shop along with prepared foods and an assortment of kitchen goods. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly so don't be afraid to request their help if you have an idea of what you want but don't know what to buy. They don't have a large amount of food options and they have no dessert. I am always excited to come here! This place has ambiance coming out of its eyeball sockets. I've been coming to the deli section of Surdyk's for years and I've been impressed with their cheeses and salamis, so it's not surprising that they have a bistro with such high-quality dishes. My favorite is the Grilled Sirloin Steak, which is a little pricey but ever so tasty. It comes with a pepper sauce that is fun to dip bread in once the meat has been devoured. They also have a great mac & cheese and a nice Apaghetti alla Vodka with sausage, and of course the charcuterie board is outstanding. There isn't much seating, although you can resort to a seat at the bar as I often have. They have outdoor seating during the appropriate months. They have outdoor seating along the sidewalk and an open concept for indoor seating if you're by the window. Very noisy and busy but I felt attended to. Sidebar is a great addition to the neighborhood and the Surydk's complex! The space is nice and intimate but it can accomodate groups of 6-8 as well. Because it's small you might want to make reservations ahead of time, though I can almost always grab a spot at the bar if I'm solo. The patio area can get windy but I bet indoors with the garage door windows open on a nice summer day would be perfect. The curds with hot honey and the burger with dijonnaise are among the highlights of the menu items I have tried. The cocktails, pastas and soups are pretty good but I have had a miss here and there. I'm sure they crush on the wine list. Surdyk's continues to get lots of my money between this place, the cheese shop, and the liquor store. Long live Surdyk's! read more

I've been coming here since they opened and it's about time I wrote a review. Sidebar is a cozy, classy, and tasty place around the corner from Surdyk's liquor store (or behind their cheese shop). Every meal I've had here has been delicious. They have limited hours (4-11 T-Sat) and a limited menu, but I've never had an issue finding something I like. It's sometimes hard to get a table here but they do accept reservations so that's a me problem. Service is attentive and helpful. Last time I was there they let us try 3 different wines before selecting the one we liked. My only complaint- I wish they would expand their wine selection. You'd think being next to (and owned by) a first class liquor store they would have quite the selection, but not so. Regardless, this is a solid choice! read more

Add a perfect bun with chopped red onion, pickles and mayo and you have a contender for your top burger in the Twin Cities. The pea ravioli is a winner as well. Fresh pasta filled with a pea puree and topped with fresh peas, pistachios, Fresno chiles, and a light sauce. So good! Also like that you can order wine in a 3 or 6 ounce pour. I've been to the cheese shop before so I had a feeling the restaurant would also have some delicious options. My friend and I shared the ravioli, fries, and cheese curds. They were all delicious. Overall I had a really great experience here. This was my second time visiting, but first time eating here. First off I'll say the space is SMALL, so I'd recommend a reservation, especially on weekends. The interior is really cute and well-designed. I love the bar being in the center, all the wine featured along the walls, and especially the wall of old ads. I'd love to come back in the summer when they can have the giant firehouse-style door open! The wine was mostly good, but I absolutely hated the Walnut Block Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand. I literally had to choke it down. After that, the other two whites I had were very good! Our server was SO nice, funny, friendly, and helpful. She had great recommendations and was very attentive. Now to the food. In short, it was exquisite. Every single thing we ate was great. We started with the charcuterie board, which we devoured. Everything on the board was delicious and thoughtfully picked out. Portions were great too. After the charcuterie board we got the mac and cheese (with bacon, of course) and the roasted duck breast. I definitely encourage adding bacon to the mac because it wasn't just a few small bits, there were huge, delicious chunks, which worked really well with the crunch from the bread on top and the creaminess of the cheese. This spot was a little unexpected. When I am traveling, I love to scope out great liquor stores to find unique or more rare bottles of bourbon, and when I was talking to my friend from the cities, she said we had to go to Surdyk's. She also said that she heard they have a pretty exceptional bar/restaurant connected to it. I was sold. The liquor store itself did not disappoint with floor to ceiling options, but Sidebar was equally impressive. It had a great ambience, this house old-fashioned might be one of the best I have ever had, and their food was unexpectedly elevated for being a restaurant connected to a liquor store. For example, they don't have onion rings, they have onion bhaji which is like an onion fritter that was exploding with flavor and texture. Even these roasted brussels sprouts had additional elements that set them apart. There is an obvious reason that the liquor store was celebrating its 90th anniversary. When you're doing things that well, people recognize it. If you're looking for an accessible entrance, you will need to enter the restaurant through the liquor store rather than their main side door. read more

Sidebar's bartenders are skilled! It's fun sitting near the bar where you can see them mix mastering drinks. Drinks are high quality. Refined, sort of pinky finger pointed to the heavens refined. Service is solid and obviously a team effort. Water is constantly filled, and check-ins are frequent but not overboard. Burger and fries - yes, please. I recommend you ask for light salt on the fries. Otherwise, they're too salty. I suggest ordering the garlic aioli to dip the fries in. The burger is state fair meets a bit fancy, delicious.
