This isn't my first time eating here at Sura, and this restaurant never leaves me disappointed! Today I had the soon tofu with kalbi. Everything came fast, fresh, and delicious. Excellent Korean food - very comforting and flavorful but so expensive! I usually get their lunch or dinner combo which include sides (kimchi, potatoes, seaweed, some meat dish), a choice of tofu soup or calamari or something (but get the tofu soup!), and your meat entree (bulgogi, spicy pork, spicy chicken, etc) (~$15.99-18.99) I tried their spicy pork but their bulgogi is the best in my opinion (I may be bias as I like to cook with the bulgogi sauce at home too hehe). You can get a cheaper option if you do specialty dish instead of combo and the only difference is you get their radish soup instead of the tofu soup. The radish soup is actually pretty delish but somewhat plain. Their tofu soup is very flavorful and comes out boiling hot (literally!) My first choice is always Gen (AYCE KBBQ) but if for some crazy reason I am not up for that, I definitely wouldn't mind some Sura for some Korean food. read more

Due to a special circumstance, we decided to dine-in instead of a to-go order. We arrived and they provide hand sanitizer upon arrival. You write your name and size of party and the pens are in "clean" and "dirty". Their spacing is pretty small so they have very limited indoor seating available. I did not notice if there were outdoor seating, but appears like they seat four groups of people near the four corners of the restaurant. They do wear masks and for the people preparing food, they do wear gloves. Our waitress only had a mask on. Upon seating, they do not appear to require you to keep a mask on until your food arrives. Their menu is available online by scanning the QR Code at the front of the table to pull it up. They still take your order in person though. Food-wise, I had a stone bowl beef bibimbap, had the spicy Korean rice cake (Tteokbokki/dukbokki), Korean kimchi pancake, and the Kalbi lunch combo with Mandu (dumpling) soup. The food had a certain flavor behind it all and I would say the food was decent Korean food given the location. First off, the Korean Kimchi pancake came out with an iron skillet and it didn't have a strong Korean kimchi taste to it, but it was more batter than kimchi. Not bad exterior crunch, but not the strongest Kimchi pancake I've had. For the spicy Korean rice cake, they provide a fair amount along with the fish cakes. A lot of leftover sauce, which was spicy, but not overbearing. For my stone bowl beef bibimbap, it was a good amount of rice and ingredients on top of it. They don't provide the spicy sauce in a bottle, but provides you a small amount in a sauce plate. They had bean sprouts, carrots, white daikon/radish, sliced Chinese mushrooms, spinach, and cucumbers/squash on it along with some bulgolgi beef and fried egg. Each ingredient tasted as they kind of should and the ingredient that stood out the most for me was the mushroom as that had the most umami taste to it. The least favorite was the bulgolgi beef, which I think was overcooked for beef and ended up being drier than it can be. Might be the store's recipe to cook it that way and it's just a preference. The rice they use is a blend of white and purple rice together, which clumps together nicely as it's very glutinous that way. The last thing about the stone bowl bibimbap is that unfortunately, the rice sear wasn't great. The rice was stuck-ish, but it wasn't a good solid layer at the bottom as I hoped it would be. Price-wise, it's there for sure considering it is Korean food. Definitely rivals the price at other places I've been and either slightly higher or lower than some places I've been to in LA. The biggest drawback to it all was the portion size. For that price, I can usually get more than what Sura provides at a different store in LA. Granted, I would have to drive farther for it. All in all, it was a pleasant experience to dine in at Sura. The staff was very polite and professional. They are unfortunately pretty understaffed, because it was just one waitress taking orders and serving all four potential groups that dine-in. The rest of the staff was in the kitchen preparing food. Best of luck to Sura and look forward to trying something else there again in the future. read more

Pretty good Korean food recipes, coming from a Korean who's grown up on Korean food. Family recipes for all of their dishes, it seems. A bit pricey, but that's because it's the only authentic Korean spot in the area until you reach Thousand Oaks. Solid jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles) and soups/stews. All the meat dishes are solid, but like I said, a bit overpriced due to their monopoly of this region. I drive to LA/OC to get my Korean food typically for this reason but I come by Sura at least once a month when I'm having a craving in a pinch. read more

I'm bummed and even stressed to write this, but I was told the boss isn't available a few times and they wouldn't let me set up a time to talk to the boss over the phone. I most want the boss to know in case she/he isn't aware of their employees tactics. And of course I want people to know what to expect from my experience. So here-goes: Of the seven people in the restaurant on a Sunday at 7pm, five of them were us. We all got some version of a stone bowl and, although the sunny side up eggs were all cooked over hard, I think that might have been a server communication error more than a cook's error. Which brings us to the server... Your typical uninterested, checked out employee. Limited effort in explaining the menu and less emotion, personality, or whatever care one typically receives in the service industry. What bothered me most is that she added the "for parties of 6 or more, we will add 18% gratuity" Our party had five. When I asked she told us, "yeah. The boss changed the computers today and is working on changing the menu soon." I questioned how come the boss couldn't change the menu first and she replied "she's been trying to for 30 days; it takes a long time" The answers were spontaneous and speculative at best. The look on her face was that of a child's with their hand in the cookie jar. It seemed she was caught pulling a fast one, but of course I can never know. If she did push the mandatory 18% button, I can better understand why she gave no effort. We left enjoying our meal and questioning the integrity. read more

Upon walking in the restaurant smelled absolutely delicious. Like fresh grilled meats with sweet soy sauce. The food was very good and come out on very hot cast iron plates. The beef bulgogi had great flavor and was slightly sweet. The chicken was nice and spicy. Extra order of rice is $2. The sides were a perfect compliment to the meal. Sura was a FANTASTICALLY tasty surprise! My boyfriend suggested it after probably perusing yelp while hungry. We were a little nervous that the restaurant was empty but it was late on a Monday evening. We were pleasantly surprised by how delicious everything was. We both tried the soft tofu soup. My boyfriend got the veggie version and added clams and squid, level 3 spicy. I ordered the veggie version as well adding glass noodles, shrimp, and squid, level 2 spicy. I'm always afraid something will end up being too spicy even though I enjoy a good level of spice so I was a little cautious. The presentation was pretty cool. They give you a raw egg to throw in and cook when it arrives to your table boiling. The rice was fluffy and added a good texture. Not too many veggies but it was a good amount of food. Mine was double the size since I added the glass noodles and was way spicy for my taste. However, with a touch of broth, it was perfect. I'll probably get mild level 1 next time. Sura offers authentic Korean flavors without excess grease. I love the healthy cuisine here! It gets pretty busy during lunchtime because they offer lunchtime specials. For those who may be uncomfortable with the names of the dishes, they offer little photographs of the dish. I'm very impressed that one can easily choose their meat selections and even, keep things vegetarian, if one wants to. They have delicious desserts and drinks. Their version of the Arnie Palmer is to use green tea and lemonade! I wanted to order Soju but had a meeting to go to, darn. The tea was strong and wonderful. For those afraid of spice, you will be able to ask to manage the spice/heat level as well. For a nice lunch adjacent to the harbor, expect to pay around $55 for two people, after tax and tip. Bonus: lots of free parking! I feel very full and satiated but not disgusting. What a gem, to have an authentic Korean restaurant so close to the Harbor and the ocean! New favorite spot! Came here for the first time on a weeknight. Place was empty at the time but by looking at the reviews I think this was just a downtime before the dinner rush. Employees were friendly. Greeted and seated right away. The Service was excellent. My husband had the spicy pork on a sizzling plate that came with asparagus on top. I was pretty skeptical about this place, considering Oxnard isn't exactly known for having great Asian food...but this place is surprisingly good and authentic! I ordered the beef soondooboo (soft tofu soup) and loved it - the flavor was great, the soup contained a lot of veggies, and it was extremely comforting. The spicy level was a bit more weak than anticipated (i.e. their medium is probably more like a mild), but everything was really tasty. I especially enjoyed their banchan (side dishes), which consisted of fish cakes, cucumbers, kimchi and a few other items! Their Korean BBQ short ribs were really yummy and had just the right amount of fat on them, but unfortunately, the order only came with five pieces, which was a bit ridiculous considering the pricing. The inside of the restaurant is clean and it's located inside a plaza with plenty of parking. Our server was really nice and refilled our sides frequently throughout the night. Overall, this place is great, but it's at least $2 more per dish than other comparable Korean restaurants I've been to and the portion sizes are definitely smaller. I've traveled to Seoul South Korea with the Navy and this place reminds me of the food I've eaten at Seoul. The ambiance of the restaurant is awesome! There's never a dull moment when we eat at the restaurant. The owners always walk around making sure everybody is taken care of and even take the time to get to know their customers. This is the best Korean food you'll find shy of going to Korea Town. The food is very authentic and portions are generous. They don't have the "all you can eat", but everything is made with care. Want a Korean person's point of view? Well, you found it. I'm always suspect of the reviews of Korean places on yelp. I'm sure my Mexican friends would say the same about Mexican places on yelp, my Italian friends about Italian places, and so on. I was vacationing in Oxnard on the beach for a weekend and a couple of the Koreans in my group were craving some solid Hangook-food for a change of pace. So... we ordered food from Sura - pretty much the only Korean restaurant within a 30 mile radius. We were pleasantly surprised. Food was decent. Look - nowhere near the quality you'd find in Los Angeles but it also wasn't "Americanized" with excess salt, sugar, and soy sauce in the marinade. My only gripe was that they packed VERY little banchan (side dishes for us). My friend drove back after we realized and the staff were deeply apologetic and packed us some banchan upon request. This should be standard and not just available upon request. But... I appreciate that they fixed the issue hence me rounding up what would otherwise be a 3.5 star review. Pleasantly surprised to find decently authentic Korean food in Oxnard. read more

I tried the kimchi fried rice and I'm not quite sure if I would eat it again. It was alright.. the taste was not that exciting. It was sort of bland. It simply tasted like it was missing something. It did taste better when I added seaweed and radish. I give the dish a solid 5/10 as it was served and a 6/10 with the seaweed and radish. Portion was huge and price was just about right for that size. I may come back to try something else though! This is a solid place to get some very tasty Korean food, weather you want a boiling hot stone bole dish or noodle dish. I've been here twice and have ordered the Jjam Pong both times and it's always good. The first time I ordered it extra spicy and it was amazing and almost too spicy, the second time i ordered medium spicy and it was just perfect for me. The servers are friendly and even the cooks greet you when you arrive and say goodbye when you leave. Next time I'm in town i'm going to try a different dish since they all look amazing. read more

The first time I came was well over a year ago with a co worker. At that point and time I only ever had traditional Korean food in LA. The food was really good but nothing compared to the ones in La. I live near downtown Ventura so driving here was about 20-25 mins depending on the time of day you go in that direction. Recently, a few friends and I wanted to go but by the time we arrived it was too late for them to serve us, that was a real bummer . So, later that week my daughter and I decided to go for lunch. The portions are a lot smaller than I remembered and the tofu soup was really salty. The lunch prices are quite expensive in my opinion but when you want to get your Korean food fix on, there's not much more you can do ‍. Nonetheless, it was still good food and the server was nice.
