I found an olive oil here that I had been looking for locally since receiving a sample size in a gift basket earlier in the year. While browsing, I did not get as much attention as usual, perhaps because it was a Monday and not the usual weekend I am at La Cantera. Either way, the check out was pleasant even thought other staff seemed preoccupied. There are many wonderfully beautiful items here, I love to cook and will be back when I have even more time to peruse. Although, I will be mindful because the prices can be high and with places like Marshall's selling brand name overstocks - I just don't want to end up paying too much for something I can get elsewhere. read more

Went to the cooking class. The teacher has her own personality and humor. Ten people showed up to complete the group. You can bring your own wine or go across the street and buy one. We grilled flank steak and zucchini. Boiled and seasoned potatoes with red onions. Tossed salad with arugula and other fresh greens. There was a nice cheese plate to grab from while everyone participates in the making of the meal. Desert was banana fosters. It was fun and I would return. read more

I took a cooking class here and it was amazing! We made three different types of handmade pastas and incorporated our noodles into three different pasta dishes. The instructors were friendly and the facility was clean and beautiful. We were worried that we would be hungry at the end of the class but were actually so stuffed. We love these classes and we've taken MANY of them (15+?) and the way you feel about the class depends on what your expectations are. When I go, I go to learn a new skill, a new recipe, to do something hands-on that I've been too intimidated to try at home without any guidance. For example, Julie M's 5-star experence with a sweet Chef Cindy is my half-star experience with Chef Cindy.. and yes, I've had one of her classes and made sure it was my last because she used to be an HEB demo chef and that's how she treats her classroom experience. "You don't do your cooking the whole time... you do some chopping..." I don't pay that much for a class to have a demo experience and have everything done, but at least now I know not to pick her as an instructor. For some people, going in and peeling your own cucumber for $69 might be worth the experience, so to each their own! On the other hand, a few of the other chefs offer a more hands-on experience and have a more professional chef-like background coming from well-known local restaurants, and those are the ones we prefer as instructors. As for the 1-star reviewer, I can understand the frustration if the meal is not perfect but one must realize that not all "students" are at the same level of experience. For me I think it's common sense to not wait for an instructor to tell me something is burning. I know when something is burning and I know how to adjust heat or remove something from the burner if I think it might burn. Some people will rely more on instruction than others, some people will barely know which end of the knife to hold, but that's why it's a CLASS-- everyone will take away something different from their experience and it might not always be perfect. I believe if you recognize any mistakes that were made in your cooking group, you learn from them, too when you apply what you learned at home. In all, the classes are fun and you meet fun people-- maybe even giggle on the inside as you watch someone learn to boil water for the first time! If you go in with an open mind and realize it's a CLASS, not a restaurant, and that there are more-and-less advanced people in there with you, you'll have a great time. Enjoy! By the way, these classes are BYOB-- and in morning classes they are nice enough to make you a lovely coffee from one of their fancy machines! This was my first time attending one of these classes with co-workers. It was a pizza artisan class. We signed up and read all information regarding the requirements. The class was fun and the pizzas were tasty. Our surprise came when we were getting ready to leave the class and could not take our leftover. There were essentially 3 pizzas we left behind. And for the money we paid it was definitely not wort the money!!!! You pay $75 for the class but you end up eating only 3 or 4 slices. That's very expensive pizza. Lesson learned. read more

As well as gifts purchased here for everyone we know that enjoys cooking and after my phone call tonight.....I WILL NEVER SHOP HERE AGAIN AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW AND ON SOCIAL MEDIA TO DO THE SAME. Had it down on the wrong day for the cooking class for my family in from out of town. I received a call 20 minutes into what should have been the start date to see where the two attendees were. I told her I purchased the classes and thought it was for Tuesday and she "nope it was tonight" and I said "I can get them there in 10 minutes" and was told no they have already started the class. So I asked "You just called me then to say tough crap you missed your class" and she proceeds to tell me how I need a 48 hour notice to get my money back. CRAZY! Call me to basically rub it in that I missed my class by 19 minutes and there is nothing you can do to get your $138. With the technology today my vet, chiropractor, Dr, hair stylist, hair removal, and even my waste pick up at my residence, you name it and they call you the day before to remind, they send you a text message to confirm AND Sur La Table calls you the day of to say HA HA HA we have your cash and there is nothing you can do! Use to love this place and purchased many items here. Last night will be my last time. Lady was rude, I always get a cup I coffee and and then I browse. Sales lady was cleaning coffee machines and didn't even acknowledge me, I asked several times and didn't get eye contact and finally she said "give me a minute". If they don't want customers to get coffee then put up a Sign. I asked a few questions about the Nespresso machine, she answered some but I think I inconvenienced her. I'm interested in buying a Nespresso but surely not here. No wonder we all shop online no more customer service. William Sonoma has my business, so much nicer and helpful. read more

This one needs half a star. I absolutely love to cook until now. I always wanted to take classes so I can cook even better for my wife. So as a Christmas present, my wife signed us up for a couples class. The one we took was a new year eve's couple meal ... steak Diane with mashed potatoes and a chocolate soufle... well I can say this .... hands on its not...couples cooking it's not... 16 people 8 couples in my class and one person in a group of 4 couples does one thing part of the meal..if they screw up you have to eat it. 16 people get to share 8 steaks that was no more than 1/2 inch thick and the length if a cheap young piece of meat. I think it was a 7 steak because it was rock hard to chew. One if the sauces of the 2 being made burned because the chef wasn't paying attention and then didn't add mushrooms or shallots to the meal after pouring the left over sauce over the steaks. The "perfectly cooked" soufle that was on the menu were half right. The other 8 which were done by a norther person of the class over whipped it and we were given that for a dessert each of ours were no more than 3/4 inch tall and the toping we were told we had to make on the menu was already done ahead of time so no hands on there either If you have money to blow...go to a restaurant and eat enough to fill up.. for 85$ a person we got 2 slices of steak that was no more than 1 inch and half in length and a dab of mashed potatoes which came out to a mid sized spoon full with a chocolate soufle that was the worst ever becauees it never rose and the chef just shrugged his shoulders as if it is our mistake and we got the privilege to eat it. There are some really great people who work at this store, but a man named Ray/Rey has convinced me to NEVER shop at this location again. I purchased a $100 appliance from Sur La Table in December and in the six weeks I have owned it, I have used it once. My conscience got the best of me and I decided to return it. Tami made it a very nice experience, Ray made comments and pointed out that they would have to 'damage it out' since they couldn't use it or resell it. He then turned to Tami and made a comment under his breath. Not appropriate, not professional. While I am sorry for their loss, something tells me that the cost of that appliance is not coming out of Ray's paycheck. read more

We went to a Date Night cooking class this past weekend, and we had such a great time! Our instructor was Chef Cindy, and she was so wonderful. Very sweet lady! The food was delicious, and we cooked in a group, with another couple. So, no you don't do your own cooking the whole time. You do some chopping, but a lot of the ingredients are pre-measured and ready to go. The food didn't look like a lot, since we shared among your cooking group, but my husband and I were full by the end of class. It was nice to get new ideas, taste new flavors and have a fun night out! Also, you're allowed to take your own wine, so don't forget to take a bottle. read more

I was a bit disappointed with this class. I expected a lot more attention specially for how pricey it was...$80/person!! Half of the time we felt lost on how to cut the ingredients (specially because we aren't chefs and lack knowledge of kitchen terms) and the ladies who were the chef helpers instead of assisting the students, stood around with a bored look on their faces. Although chef Leroy was pleasant, it would've been better if he enlightened the class with more profound information on the ingredients as opposed to just telling us "here are the ingredients, put them together!" Nowhere in the website did it mention we could bring a bottle of wine. I had heard it was engaging but wasn't very impressed with it. In order for me to attend again and receive the same service, it would have to cost 1/2 of that. read more

Their cooking classes are a joke. It is not worth the money! The class choices for birthday parties should at least include a dessert and they don't. In the end if your party, or if you booked classes with other people, ruin the meal you still have to eat it and divide what is prepared leaving you with small portions. read more

I meant to write this around Christmas but was waiting for a shipment and then time ran away from me. First I went to the store to return a Nespresso frother as it was broken but they couldn't exchange it for me as they did not have one exactly the same so they told me to either bring in the coffee maker to witch it was a free gift or just send in the frother and the main company would return to me a new one. I sent it in and did not hear anything else about it. I called and they said they had received it and would process the package and send me a new one but would take awhile as it was the holidays. So I waited. Nothing happened. I did include my name and email address in the package. Then I called and they couldn't find the frother I returned. Finally they found it but told me I needed to return the coffee maker as this was a free gift. I said the store did not tell me this. After talking awhile she told me they would send me a new frother. I didn't hear from them, no email nothing, but I finally got a frother. Then 2 days later I was passing by the actual store in San Antonio and went to look on their Christmas 50% off shelves and found a box of apple cider spice mix. I took it and my other purchase to the counter and they charged me full price. I complained and the clerk checked with the manager who said it was on the wrong shelf and would give me 10% off. It must have been on the wrong shelf along with 10 other mixes of the same thing. I bought it because my husband really loves it but I wanted to report that even though Sur La Table has great products, their customer service stinks. So since other stores offer the same products I will be shopping there as this place has lost my business. read more

Staff could use a lesson on customer service phone etiquette. Called with a question about processing a return and was informed that I need to call the bank. Meanwhile, a return from another store on the same day was processed days ago, which i pointed out. Employee responded "we are a different store" but in the same breath told me "you need to call your bank." Well, which is it?!? Is it your store being slower to process, which would have been a prefect explanation, or is it my bank who somehow magically processed another store and not yours? read more

This store does have a lot of little cool gadgets to browse through. There were some things that seemed somewhat reasonably priced, but the store just oozes over-pricing. They had a rack of cookie cutters in the back that I sorted through for awhile and found three Christmas ones. I've been looking for some and these were 97 cents a piece or something like that. I think if you're looking for something specialty, this would be a good place to look. But if you're buying something more run of the mill, I wouldn't buy it here. read more

Love the concept of the store, not the people. I am familiar with the Sur La Table in Houston and the staff is great there. None of the staff at the San Antonio location were helpful in any manner. We bought a set of cutting boards, a mandolin, and a rolling pin for a bridal shower. I asked for it to be gift wrapped and the shift manager/ manager asked "all together?" and I said yes, because it did not seem like a problem. This was a tough task for the girl she asked to do it, and it took 30 minutes after receiving the receipt for her to finish. After waiting, the box we received is not even presentable. Shame to have a customer embarrassed by The stores wrapping skills. Will be re wrapping it and not returning to this location. Management, if your reading this I would consider some new job applicants at this location; current ones are inept. read more

I recently took a class with Chef Cindy and found it fun and informative. My sister and I came together for a pasta from scratch class. I found her to be very knowledgable and experienced. I purchased a pasta machine after the class and have used the tips she gave us to make not only pasta but also ravioli which she was so helpful in explaining how to make the filling. I would not hesitate to take any class with her again. Sam O it is a shame that you did not enjoy the class. We were lucky to have been in a smaller class and received lots of attention from the chef. I have taken a date night class and found it to be too full, too loud, and too much wine. read more

This sucks having to right this review, but i can't tolerate what I heard/witnessed. I think people deserve to know how things really are at this location. Employees talking bad about customers, when other people are in earshot should not be happening. On 11/18/12 one man by the name of Jalal was talking to another about how a customer returned an item. He said the customer must have been on a short leash by his wife. Apparently he was upset about not making his daily goal. He even said that " effin guy" in his conversation. The other employee was quiet and just listening. Employees should not be on the sales floor using profanity. He must not have known i was around, because i was behind a tall fixture. Upon leaving i asked who the Store Manager was, and an employee pointed to him. It's too bad as i loved this store, but i will not be returning. I had made a purchase earlier in the day, and returned to purchase another, but didn't. I contemplated returning my last purchase, but i won't even send in my family for fear he would talk about them. I have worked in retail management before and this never happened with my staff. I think corporate deserves to know don't you? read more
