Both were led by talented professionals with great communication skills and the ability to teach to each persons need. Expertise in the class members ranged from expert to novice yet all left with new skills in their toolbox. Classes can fill up quickly, do it will benefit you to plan ahead about a month. We've enjoyed doing classes with other couples as a fun date night. Lord help you if you want to do an EVEN EXCHANGE for a defective Sur La Table product. Tried to exchange out a $50 apron that wasn't even used, the pocket was ripping off. Still had tags and everything attached. Nope need a receipt for an even exchange. Look up account I used when I purchased. Nope doesn't exist. Call corporate, found account, we will request a receipt for you. Great! Tell me location, exact date, exact total. I need the receipt for the exact total. Oh well we can't find the receipt if you can't provide the exact total. All for an EVEN EXCHANGE!!!! What store doesn't do even exchanges without a reciept??!! TL/DR: always keep your receipts cause even with their name on the product they won't exchange anything. read more

My husband and I signed up for a class with a big group of our friends just to try it out. I've been to a similar class at Central Market in Dallas and had a good time and was excited to try this class. It turned out being 50% hands off, as the first half of the class, we spent watching the instructor tell us what we're supposed to do while she either demoed, or it was already done for us, or we passed a bowl around a group of 14 and took turns mixing. She said it was time for a break after about 45 mins in and I was thinking 'a break from what?, we hadn't even done anything yet'. Additionally, she spent a good amount of the time selling the Breville appliances we were using. Upon return from break, we were divided into groups and we made the pasta (running it through the device to make flat noodles as it was already made into dough for us). There was a sense of accomplishment from making the pasta. I do wish it was much more hands on as that's how I learn best. Lastly, there was an obvious and awkward dynamic between the instructor and her assistants. Every time she politely asked one of them for help with something, one specific assistant would retort "hold on, let me finish this." Or she would take her sweet time and had a clear attitude with body language and facial expressions. We all talked about it during our break. It was so obvious that either there was some sort of argument or fight prior to the class or they just really didn't like the instructor. It was obvious to all the participants and it felt uncomfortable at times. I even offered that assistant some of our wine though she politely declined. It was definitely unprofessional behavior. We were so excited for this class. So much potential given the brand. A real let down. In fact some of the nice people we met recommended some other cooking classes that were much more hands on and a good time. I don't recommend. read more

My boyfriend booked this baking class as a birthday surprise for me and it was super fun! We made mochi donuts, churros, and beignets. You basically work in 3 groups of 4 to prepare all the food and share it at the end. There were times when only one couple would be working, while another would just be standing around and vice versa. The instructor didn't give us all a copy of the recipe till the end to take home. He had to keep looking at the recipe to tell us what to do and it would have been easier if they provided it to us in the beginning. It was overall a super fun and cute date idea. We had so many leftovers and were able to pack it up to take with us. read more

This was our first time attending a cooking class with them. We've taken cooking classes before and really enjoyed them, but this one felt different. There was a lot of downtime because the focus seemed to be on accommodating a large number of participants rather than providing a true hands-on experience. With so many people in the class, we had to take turns, which left long gaps of just watching instead of cooking. In other classes I've attended, the experience was nonstop and interactive. Are you kidding me! First, there is absolutely no followup. We signed up for a cooking camp for my son and it was a joke. The class always started late and they always finished early. They had no problem signing me up for a class after it started. They kept me on the hook stating, "let me talk to my general manager to see what we can do about making up that one day". I took the croissants from scratch workshop and was not disappointed. The kitchen is spacious and well lit. The chef was friendly, however, she seemed a bit clueless when I posed some basic questions about baking. Clearly, not a pastry chef. We learnt how to make chocolate croissants, morning buns and croissant dough. They turned out to be great! We were given croissants and morning buns to take home but not the dough that we prepared, not sure why. Overall, I would recommend this class to a friend. read more

My wife and I went for date night to try some thing new and learn while eating. 6/11/21 The chef was an excellent teacher and allowed us to move at our own pace. We got to work together as a team and learned how to make potato dumplings-and basil pesto. We also learned proper techniques for searing and finishing a perfect steak. Who knew plain salt and pepper did so much. I always use creole seasonings or self made mixtures. We also made a lemon vinaigrette dressing for an arugula salad. We met a nice couple in the event as well. The food came out great and we had a well balanced meal. We finished off with mint chocolate chip gelato. Went for a work function and it was very hands off to say the least. We barely cooked anything ourselves. On top of that our dessert wasn't done at all, the instructor just said sorry. It was inedible so half of us didn't even eat it. Had a good time with the people we were paired with but that had nothing to do with the cooking class. My husband and I attended Restaurant-Style Ramen class this past Saturday and were utterly disappointed. I am not sure if the instructor was simply having a bad day, but she was neither engaging, nor engaged with the class. She was reading from the recipes that were emailed and the class was instructed to refer back to the emailed instructions. We sliced 1 green onion and 7 mushrooms and peeled 2 eggs, the rest was done already and for instructions.. you guessed it: check your email. To be fair: we did not return after the break, as we made alternate arrangements for our afternoon and we left. I am sure the ramen was great, but that's not why we attended the class and spent $160 on. We were particularly excited to learn how to make the perfect ramen egg, but since the eggs were done already (using a sous-vide machine and not per emailed recipe) we did not learn much there either. It was just overall disappointing and expensive for what it was. I don't know if I don't recommend the class or the instructor, but I don't recommend either at this point. read more

For Mother's Day, my son treated me to a cooking class. Paris in the Spring was the theme, with Salmon in white wine sauce, grilled asparagus, and a sweet pea soufflé. My partner and I went in January for the Lunar New Year cooking class. We did steamed dumplings, long beans and long life noodles with baby bok choy. My husband and I visited this location the day before Valentines Day. Our cooking class was titled "DATE NIGHT: FROM PARIS WITH LOVE" with Chef Miguel. The Chef was very hands on and knowledgeable. I appreciated the added tips and such. We had a full class of 12 people and even though it was a tight fit we still had a great experience. Being able to work in another group with people I don't know comes natural for me and it was nice to see my husband work the same way! I took as many pictures as I could while still being in the moment. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. Lastly, be sure to bring your favorite beer or wine! Be warned! This "cooking class" had poor quality, over priced food, and minimal teaching points. First of all, 20 people were packed like sardines on one side of 4 pushed together tables. For my parents and I, there was a prep platter of food with about 3 veggies and 2 herbs and already prepped meats and already made sauce. Basically, we had hardly any hands on experience. As a side note, BRING YOUR OWN WINE/ALCOHOL/WATER!! I've taken a cooking class at Central Market and we were provided this, don't expect the same here. Another note, if you can't stand for long periods of time and don't like to eat standing up, this is not for you either. When it was time to get started, the instructor was disorganized, overwhelmed, and had no clue what she was doing. She was constantly doing her own cooking, checking on the staff, or reading the recipe print out (like she didn't know what she's supposed to do). Also, she couldn't give us answers if we asked what was done to the already prepped food or food that the staff were cooking. About halfway, it was basically a Sur La Table marketing ploy. "While the food cooks, everyone go into the shop and use your 10% discounts that are only good for tonight." Well, while we are away in the store, the staff are cooking our stuff for us! There were several times that food was already prepared or being cooked by the staff. We felt that we were eating at a hibachi. Perhaps this was just a bad day, but this was not what $85 per person should be. I felt pretty ripped off by the end: I felt rushed (class was at 7 and they were doing their best to fit a 5 course cooking class into 2.5 hours), I didn't feel I had learned anything, and they will not let you take food home!!! read more

We had an amazing date night cooking surf and turf with Kelly at the LaCantera location of Sur La Table. She was kind and didn't bat an eye when my husband asked for a well done steak. We convinced him to "follow the class" and he loved his "pink" steak - thank you Kelly! It was an enjoyable late afternoon class with eight couples and Kelly included everyone in the prep. She was a joy and very knowledgable. Everyone on her staff took time to give us cooking tips. We look forward to another class one day soon. Kelly is the best! read more

My husband and I shop here a lot because we love to cook! So far most of our experiences have been pretty good, the people are always helpful when we are trying to find something specific or want to test out different items. But this past weekend we had gone in and bought some hot chocolate that they had been sampling out, and it had different flavors so we decided to buy one of the flavored ones. We got home and made some hot chocolate, and it was absolutely disgusting. We went back to the store and tried to return it, and the worker at the checkout counter was not even willing to listen, or understanding at all just immediately said they don't return food and it's on the bottom of the receipt. In any business, when something is final sale, that should be told as you're checking out, or posted somewhere next to the items. Truly, though the customer service was my biggest issue, but the second issue was that I now spent $20 on a thing of hot chocolate powder that tastes like dirt. PSA do not buy the salted caramel flavored hot chocolate. read more

Went to Sur La Table yesterday and really wanted a single baking dish with a lid in blue. Unfortunately, they only had the display I asked the cashier to order one for me online to be picked up in the store and she didn't know how to do it! I assuming she was new, she asked others for help, but they dismissed her because they were busy with their own customers. I placed a straightforward order on the Sur La Table website for an espresso machine paying extra for same or next day delivery. Everything was entered correctly and the order seemed to be completed without glitches. i never received an e-mail confirmation so later in the day I checked the status on the website and to my surprise, the order was cancelled. I spent considerable time with an outsourced customer service who could only suggest to place the order again.....a ridiculous notion since the charge had already registered on my bank account. I asked to speak to a Manager and asked that the initial order be reinstated and have the machine delivered by our local store which should have been the initial plan. His response was that there had been some glitch on the website and I would have to submit another order. Really?? And have this happen again with what is an unreliable website? They did absolutely nothing to extend a courtesy to regain my confidence. I also called a store Manager and that person took no responsibility. I had to spend time on the phone with my bank to make sure that the Sur La Table charge be dropped in a timely manner if pending or reversed if necessary. One thing for sure, I will never shop with them again. read more

My only complaint about this cooking class was that they didn't provide each participant with their own ingredients, but as far as a basic beginner sushi class goes, I learned a lot. At $70 per person, they really should've had portions for each person. Super super fun. If you haven't had a chance to try one of their cooking classes, you just simply don't know what you are missing out on. No one would ever describe me as a cooking genius but that doesn't stop me from trying :-) When the kids were home I was way too busy doing mom stuff to be able to take time to learn that cooking could be fun....sorry kids. I've learned it now...so come visit me and try some of our fun foods! This time we made a fresh salad with homemade vinaigrette (I don't think I'll ever buy another one from the store...that's how easy it is). Then we had salmon with saffron infused hollandaise sauce which was out of this world. To top it off we had these yummy pear souffles with anglaise sauce. Simply delicious...restaurant quality...home cooking :-) This is a great way for my husband and I to hang out and do something we are learning to love...we enjoy learning new culinary tricks to share with our friends and family. If you live close to us...you've had the opportunity to be our guinnea pigs as we are always trying new things out on our tasters (aka friends and family). Chef Marisa was fabulous as well! Ordered a coffee maker in store because they made a mistake and instead of giving me a refund for an item I had purched as a gift and needed to return, they gave me a store gift card. At that point I had to purchase something, so I found a $200ish Nespresso coffee machine and called the store to make sure they had the machine I wanted. The guy on the phone was terribly rude but at that point I had to spend the gift card or be out $65. So I drove to the store for help ordering and making sure I bought the correct one (they have a bunch of options). I was told the coffee machine would be to me by Friday. Friday came and went, no machine. I called customer service and found out It was actually on back order which I wasn't told and my receipt did not reflect. Customer service basically said sorry but nothing we can do. Finally!! My machine arrived today after 32 days of waiting! (Not an exaggeration) It was the wrong one. Didn't have the milk frother that was supposed to be attached. I called customer service to let them know the entire story and the rep didn't seem to care one bit. She didn't even offer an "I'm sorry" for the laundry list of mistakes several different Associates had made or that the machine was not what I had picked out in the store, or the fact that I had coffee pods on my counter for 32 days that I couldn't even use etc. She also told me to go online to look at the 2 different milk frothers available so I could pick one to buy. I asked her the differences between the two and she was just throwing out guesses instead of bothering herself to find out. Then she lied and said the difference was that one of them had a "black thing" at the bottom "that keeps the milk warm" which I found out from Nespresso, is COMPLETELY FALSE. Incredibly frustrating. I called Nespresso directly and received EXCEPTIONAL customer service from them! I strongly recommend going directly to Nespresso if you need any assistance. Sur la table doesn't even sell the coffee that goes with the machines. Bottom line, the customer service here is terrible, the Associates know NOTHING about the products they sell, and they DO NOT care about their customers. I will never give them my business again. read more

The first time me and the wifey came, we learned how to make pad Thai which was very good. This most recent time, we were instructed on making a Cuban sandwich, pineapple salsa, plantain chips and coconut flan. Both times the level of instruction was very good and they tailored the guidance for both beginners in the kitchen all the way to seasoned chefs. The best part about these classes is getting to do everything fun with cooking without worrying about any of the hassles of it. They prep the ingredients and tools, they supply the recipes with directions, they do the dishes, they even ensure you don't burn the food or screw up along the way. In other words they make cooking extremely fun and ensure your final product is something to be proud of. I suppose classes can vary based on each instructor but both times I've been, the instructors were patient, helpful and overall pretty cool and conversational. The class sizes seem to remain around the 16 or less range which is nice. Almost everyone comes with their significant other or a friend so pairing up is made simple. Classes are about 1.5 or 2 hours long so plan accordingly. For attending a class, they give you a coupon for merchandise in the retail store part of the business and I even got a coupon if I registered for another class before the night was over. Talk about striking while the iron is hot. I'd highly recommended this as a date night for a couple that has some interest in improving their kitchen skills, doing something different or for foodies like me and my wife. My one and only complaint is the portions they gave us. We paid $75/person and had to split a sandwich. Really??? Besides that though, the experience was good! read more

Me and my hubby went to one of their cooking classes last night and it was really fun. We did a spin on surf and turf. We cooked short ribs and shrimp. The short ribs were in the insta cook part of the class so when the class arrived we were able to cook them on a skillet for just a little bit with the seasoning and the marinade we also put the shrimp on it as well. For the shrimp, we used seasoning and herbs. They were marinated during the class. Lastly we were shown how to make a fresh salad with mozzarella. Overall I had a good time. I always do with my Bae :-). I think the instructor could have been a bit more lively. He was obviously skilled and highly trained. He gave us a background on his experience and love for cooking and that was nice to hear. We would do it again. I recommend giving it a try. We learned some great techniques and another meal to add to our list. Great experience. Tip-you can bring wine or beer with you. They don't sell or offer anything during the class. What a great night! It is not a cheap night out, but it's totally worth it. You get to meet great people, learn new cooking techniques, and eat some great food. Make sure you check with your location to see if you can bring wine/beer to enhance your evening fun. Took a date-night cooking class here and it was SO MUCH FUN. Sure some may see $80 as being a but high for a cooking class, but it's well worth it. The menu we cooked was simple yet tasted as if it were from a 5 star restaurant. I plan on taking more classes here- knife skills and Thai are at least 2 I found. I have always liked this store. Yet, after this evening I will not return, but take my business to another store or online. I was just browsing to see if I found anything I liked. I found a few cute cookie cutters, and was satisfied. I went to the cashier, and she asked for my last name. I declined proving that information. She informed me in order to buy my cookie cutters, I HAD to provide my name. I refused again, and she explained to me it was required for returns and to create easier records for sur la table. I explained it was ridiculous. I gave my last name, and then she said 'First name' she let go of that one after I laughed a little. Marisa may have thought I was difficult, as she didn't want to deal with my over refusing my first name. I have never been to a store where I was REQUIRED to give my name for a purchase. I am so disappointed, and will not be returning, or discontinue recommending a company that is so eager to gather data on me that I am required to provide my name. I am not a complainer, but I really think this was ridiculous. I am sure she was told she had to force us to provide the information, shame on the management and company. We signed up for a Valentine's cooking class and it was soooooo much fun :) The instructor was animated and interesting. He seemed like he was having a really good time teaching us how to make an amazing meal. An email was sent out before the class, saying we were allowed to bring a bottle of wine or beer. Just about every couple had a bottle of wine (weeeeeeeee..!) It was so much fun being able to try out all the cooking products and at the end of the class, we all received a 10% discount on merchandise purchase (to be used on the same day as the cooking class but it was 10% off your entire purchase.
