This is our absolute favourite restaurant in Ottawa! There is not much more I can say that hasn't already been eloquently said (and in more detail!) The food is exceptional. Our must haves: Tuna crudo (we DREAM about the crudo!), kale salad (the lardons/pancetta is to die for), the squid ink rigatoni with meatballs (succulent and slightly spicy MB, my FAVE in the WORLD) and the Eton Mess (I cannot fully describe how much I love this dish. Sadly this one is seasonal). Honestly, I'm drooling as I write this review. The service is fantastic. The servers are always extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Sat at the bar for dinner for two. Had two cocktails; both excellent with a good balance of alcholic punch and flavour. Rolls and duck fat whipped butter were excellent. We started with lonza e coppa served with crisp flatbread, mustard and pickles. Not sure where they source these from but it was amazing. Next we had the black pepper spaghetti, which they thoughtfully split into two for the two us. It seems weird to order pasta when eating out but I didn't regret this for a second. Also amazing. Next we had mackerel and truffles. Although decent this was probably the weakest part of the meal; but only relative the standard set by the cocktails, appetizer, and pasta. Maybe too much salt on the fish. Finished up with a chocolate crema, also excellent. My husband and I did the pasta class on Thursday Feb 9/17. Although I've often made pasta I had never made filled pasta, and now I know the best flours to use so it was a fun learning experience! We met a wonderful couple and ended up exchanging phone numbers so that's cool too...meeting foodies like us is always fun NOW for the dining experience! I was blown away with the roasted brussel sprouts, OMG these were the best! I truly hope they never take them off the menu! We enjoyed the cheese filled pasta with the brown butter and fried sage leaves, every bite was so satisfying! The desserts were amazing too, the orange filled with chocolate mousse was unbelievably decadent. The baked Alaskan was my first one ever and it did not disappoint! If I ever crave it I will return to a Supply and Demand! The whole menu was well executed with perfect wine pairings. I highly recommend this Restaurant! The. Excellent food, drink and service but this place is very loud...with the tile, windows, mirrors on the wall, etc. it's all hard surfaces so no softening of the ambient noise. They should invest in some acoustical treatment. When you have to yell to be heard by the staff and guests as your table, it detracts from the otherwise excellent experience. read more

Excellent! We had great service, wonderful, innovative, healthy food and tasty, decently priced wine. Only in Ottawa can you make a reservation for a restaurant of this quality a day before you want to go. If this was TO they'd be booked weeks in advance. We shared oysters, which were sublime, especially the raspberry point from PEI. We had tuna crudo which was beautiful; delicate and fresh. The smoked cod with eggs, again, delicious, and a dish with beets and a velvety soft white cheese. The play of flavours was divine. We shared a poached orange stuffed with a chocolate semifreddo and drizzled with creme anglais. All this and 4 glasses of a nice French Viognier was $114, well worth the price. Will I be returning? I was oh-so happy at Supply & Demand, a charming, romantic, neighbourhood restaurant whose thoughtful cooking and attentive service lingering longingly in my thoughts days after my visit. In a small, close-knit Ottawa food scene with many off-shoots and re-mixes of similar trends (tuna crudo and oysters, anyone?), Supply and Demand stands out as a smarter, more refined rendition of the tastes that have come to dominate the capital. The room feels like a Prohibition-era luncheonette crossed with your grandma's kitchen. It is homey and comfy while at the same time playful and modest. The star here is the food and the amiable, friendly service. The plush booths and warm lighting simply lulls you in to a fun foray in to fresh cooking. I'm still dreaming about those salty and sweet Parker House rolls they dished up to start the meal--and the duck-fat churned in to the butter for a sweet and gamey taste. I could take a basket of these and any number of selections off Supply's wine list and be a very happy man indeed. It's a small but thoughtful menu--a few oysters, a few veggies, a couple homemade pastas, and a few larger entrees for good measure. The pastas are pretty delicious, though if the idea of eating pasta out seems a bit criminal, an unadvertised option is to get half orders of either pasta course. I did a half order of the squid ink rigatoni with tuna and prosciutto meatballs and was happy I did: their half is still a hearty portion and the dish has been one of the signature items giving Supply it's early fan base. Balanced with garlic and a light sprinkle of mint, the dish is complex without being hokey. It draws you in to savour each bite. I tried their take on a Kale caesar: a monstrously huge salad with a wonderful garlicky kick. While other restaurants insist on creamy heavy dressings that mask the kale, Supply & Demand defers to the kale's crunchiness and bite with vinaigrette. Grilled Brussels sprouts served with a hearty steak of mozzarella, and bacon lardons was fantastic. And a tuna crudo with truffle oil, puffed rice, and cilantro was absolute happiness in each bite--the puffed rice especially being a playful and unfamiliar snap, crackle, and pop on my tastebuds. To finish, a brioche french toast that was as big as my face. Delicate and sweet, it was alarmingly good, and every time I pledged to leave some behind, I just scraped further away toward a clean plate. Compared to a lot of eating in Ottawa, Supply & Demand feels like a value: the food is fantastic, the portions are gargantuan, and diners can leave stuffed for under $40. I was keen and eager to see more of the kitchen's gems, so I ate perhaps a bit more that one would or should--you could scrap one of those courses easily and their "Small Plates" are anything but. I appreciate the thoughtful and delicious food served fast and fresh and at a price that means Ottawa's best eating isn't reserved for government expense accounts. I'm thinking longingly on my meal and plotting my return. Maybe next time, I'll eat less, but somehow, I doubt it. read more

The food is great. No question. But weirdly, it's usually too hot to dine comfortably in the summer. First time I went, I complained, and the greeter chirped "well, our air conditioning is working as hard as it can." So I left, went to Allium, a few blocks away, which is just as good (and just as expensive), but has air conditioning that works. Great dynamic place, we loved it! Maybe a bit too noisy for a romantic date but that's not what we were looking for. We got oysters as appetizers and we were not disappointed. I was told that the sauces for them were delicious and they certainly lived up to their reputation. We spent 3 days ice skating and eating in Ottawa and this place was the absolute best! Service and atmosphere were both excellent. Scallop, pomegranate and celery appetizer melted in our mouths and left us wanting more. Ditto for the tuna truffle app. The fresh oysters on the half shell were briny, soft and delicious. The toasted carrots were a riff on fish roe blintzes w dill and sour cream/yogurt and killed. Finally the kale salad was crunchy, bitter, savory and perfect. All VERY well executed and creative. This is hands down my favourite restaurant in Ottawa. Great value for what you get. The flavour of their dishes is honestly off the charts ! I've never tasted anything better. This was a great dining experience. The casual ambiance belied the excellence in the kitchen-there were some serious mad chef skills going on in the visible kitchen. Our apps were: the crudo scallops, still beautifully thin and raw, but just 'poached' enough in the citrus marinade, with a delightful grapefruit and fennel frond topping and carefully crafted thai bird chili rounds; the summer squash rounds with a soft (goat?) cheese, pine nut, lemon balm topping, that when rolled up created a taste that transcended the individual ingredients; and the house version of a standard 'prosciutto y melone' with perfectly ripe melon. Another standout from the early round was bread served with an amazing bacon butter which had a subtle smoky flavor. Our mains were all excellent as well: on the well-prepared salmon, the romesco on the side was the standout. The octopus in the squid ink pasta dish was so amazingly tender and tasty. The duck sausage was incredibly seasoned and just spicy enough, and the roasted red and green peppers, and pickled scapes on top were delightful counterpoint. This last dish is the go-to for the heartier appetites in your group. We tried to save room for dessert but the three of us struggled to finish the yummy chocolate semi-freddo, even though we would have liked to try all three desserts on the menu. This place was delightful! The wait staff was completely attentive and friendly and the food was great! We ordered the squid ink pasta and the surf 'n turf, which comprised of a super tender and succulent barbecued octopus and a chicken thigh. The meal started with some of their home-made sour dough bread. The bread was delicious, but I could have done without their lard "butter". I get it: It's something different, not butter nor oil, but I don't particularly see anything wrong with butter or oil. For me, the lard didn't add anything to the bread at all, but at least it wasn't the disgusting chickpea hummus that they serve with bread at Grill 41, so I guess there are worse things than having lard with your bread! Being pregnant at the time of our first visit to Supply + Demand, I wasn't able to order any of the raw food, which I would have loved to try. I love oysters! So we shall have to return for the oysters and potentially update my review. Now on to food review! The squid ink pasta was okay. I had never had it before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It wasn't fishy, which was good for me (due to my condition at the time). I'm not a huge fan of pasta either, so it really was more of a dish for my husband, who seemed to have enjoyed it. I think the star of the meal was the octopus. I have eaten my fair share of octopus and I've never had such tender and delicious octopus! My husband's comment, which I think was very fitting, was: "I didn't think they could make octopus this tender!" The chicken thigh was, well, a chicken thigh. But I think any other protein would have paled in comparison to the octopus. The rye berries were delicious and such a clever change from the everyday starch! I love grits, but I think rye berries are a close second! Unfortunately, yet again, we were too full to attempt dessert. We really have to start skipping the bread in favour of dessert, but alas, we might learn one day! All in all, the flavours from the kitchen were explosive and the staff excelled! The food is incredible. It reminds me of what I grew up eating on the East Coast but elevated. The bread you get FOR FREE is just wonderful. During my visit, it was served with bacon butter. So, I read in thte Air Canada in flight magazine that this was one of the best restaurants in Canada. I never trust what I read on airplanes but decided to give it a try nonetheless. Wow... Good decision. The food is amazing. The staff is incredibly nice, efficient and laidback. I know, those three things contradict themselves. The fact is they are all true. The menu is small and limited in a very good way - it changes often and everything is great. I have never had the same thing twice. The food was great. Inventive but not overly fussy. Fresh fun ingredients. We started with the Kale salad; had a lovely inky pasta dish; and then finished with perfectly cooked and seasoned cod and peas. Scrumptious. Good unobtrusive service. Fine wine and drink list. The only downside is the ambient background noise that seems to be among so many modern restaurants a deliberate design choice. I know I am probably in the minority here, but my fantasy dinner would be enjoying delicious food like this at a leisurely pace in a room with soft surfaces and rounded corners that promoted rather than hindered lively conversation. read more
