Salad

The steak was excellent, which is the main reason for the two stars. However, our anniversary dinner was severely let down. We found a piece of glass in the salad, which is unacceptable. Although the manager removed the salad from our bill, the experience was already ruined. There was also no acknowledgment of our special occasion. We still paid the bill including the 18% gratuity, but we cannot recommend this place due to the major safety issue.

5A Kobe with lobster

Great check in service super polite staff. Amazing food and drinks tried the 5A Kobe was probably one of the best steaks Ive had. Super clean space with great view of Elgin st.

The 6oz tenderloin has four small slices (two are shown in this pic, served perfectly rare).

Best steak and fries I've had anywhere in Canada. Cannot wait to go back and order a larger steak. Cool classy vibe and great service. This is a perfect place for a cozy date night or a chill solo dinner.

I am not one to frequent steakhouses, but this one really raised the bar on my expectations on one. From the décor, to the service, to the food this place exceeds all my experiences and taste, but at this price point, should I expect anything less? Beef tallow fries - The perfect fry; crispy, fluffy and cut to the right size. The fries also didn't feel oily and were tasty by itself. It came with a dish of truffle aioli, augmenting the flavour even more! I'm salivating with just the thought of the fries. Mac and cheese - This was cheesy creamy, everything you'd expect from a great mac and cheese. It's a bit heavy if you go for a more fatty steak, so I would skip this option if you're looking to get something more fatty. Broccolini - The broccolini was cooked nicely. Charred and had a nice crunch while still being fully cooked. I would recommend as it's a nice pallet cleanser between each bite of the delicious steaks. Seared Scallops - Beautifully seared gigantic scallops. The inside was perfectly cooked giving it that delicate buttery texture. It also takes on the lemon sauce well. Would get again. Ribeye Wagyu - The steak 20oz steak came on a plate pre-cut to the perfect thickness. Taking a slice of the steak you see the beautiful cross-section of a perfectly seared steak. The first bite of this steak was pure bliss, a subtle nutty flavour from the aged steak came out. Next a flush of butteriness flows through as the meat and fats melt in your mouth and into your palette. It was one of the best steaks I've had, seasoned just enough to bring out the flavours of the meat. But its one of those things that I would say (my wallet hopes) is a once in a lifetime experience. I would be open to coming back to try their other offerings at a lower (but still high end) price point.

Let me start off by saying this place isn't cheap. You can buy a ribeye and cook it yourself for a lower cost. So what are you paying for and why am I rating this 5*? Service Everyone serving us was professional, kind, and knowledgeable. Our waiter seemed like a genuine steak nerd who lovingly took us through the different taste profiles of the different cuts, along with suggestions on how much to order that ended up being the perfect amount. To me, it seemed like everyone enjoyed what they were doing. When you're paying this kind of money, you want to feel a bit pampered and Harmon's definitely delivers there too. At the same time, it didn't feel stuffy or forced, so it still felt comfortable dining there. Drinks The Last Word and the Penicillin cocktails are some of the best I've had in recent memory, and I have gone to a lot of cocktail bars. Wonderful calibration of flavours resulting in the right kick of citrus acidity, spiciness from ginger or pepper, gentle sweetness that wasn't cloying... they were the kind of cocktails that you would never get tired of. I'm sorry I didn't take pictures of them! Food They've got a selection of steaks that you simply wouldn't find at your average market, and of course it was cooked to a perfect medium rare and seasoned appropriately. We were given chimichurri, a blue cheese sauce, and their take on an HP Sauce along with different types of salt. While unnecessary, it kept the experience exciting with varied bites. As a restaurant that focuses on beef, their beef tallow fries are a must order -- simply delicious and I wish more restaurants would do their fries in tallow. Since Harmons and Whalesbone are affiliated, they have great oysters too (though next time I'll have them at Whalesbone because of a better selection of accompaniments). Every single piece of food that my girlfriend and I ate was delicious. I feel like we were able to eat more than we normally would because of this. This isn't a place I'd go to every week, but it's perfect for a special occasion where you want to treat yourself and a special someone.

Okay, It's 10:30pm and my fiancée and I just left this restaurant. What an absolutely fantastic experience. Not only was our food amazing, the service was immaculate. Everyone was so nice. The hostesses, the waiter, the bus boy AND who I assume was the manager. Across the board, amazing service. Okay, onto the food. We started off with some champagne, and then I had a cocktail, which was great and my fiancé had some delicious Malbec. Following that up, their house baked popovers with beef tallow butter? Unreal. Then our apps, I got the oysters Rockefeller which was actually 9 oysters in 6 shells to make sure they were fully stuffed, and my fiancée got the Caesar which was bright and perfectly garlicky. For our main, we split the Australian Wagyu ribeye, which came with 3 sauces and 2 salts. On the side, we got frites, Brussels sprouts and mushrooms. The Brussels sprouts blew my mind. They were cooked in bacon and served with an apple cider gastrique that balanced it perfectly. For dessert, crème brûlée. A subtle orange scent and a thick, crackable sugar top made this dessert unforgettable. Finally, the small touches. These people went above and beyond. The bill was accompanied by house made morning buns to be enjoyed at home, prepackaged and ready to go, as well a few pieces of dark chocolate. Overall, I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. If anyone asked me for a CANT miss food spot here in Ottawa, this would be my go-to.

The best mushroom risotto. So filling

TL;DR/The Short Version: Delicious food at popular…read morerestaurant in the Byward Market. The beef cheek was melt-in-your-mouth. The Long Version: I was at Play Food and Wine Bar for a professional event that was sponsored by a pharmaceutical company. We were a group of about 30-40 people and had a section of the restaurant to ourselves. We had a set menu with a choice of mains (beef or vegetarian). We started off with a few hors d'oeuvres served on spoons. Servers were going around with them and I got to try two different types. One was a shrimp on a dollop of wasabi cream and the other was a gnocchi. Both were tasty and prepared us for the delicious meal to come. We all had the mixed salad, which was a spring mix with grapes, candied pecans, and whipped goat cheese, in a cucumber and mint vinaigrette. I loved the different textures and even though the salad came pre-dressed (I always prefer dressing on the side), the dressing wasn't heavy, so I didn't find it too overdressed for my tastes. For my main, I chose the beef cheek (the vegetarian option was gnocchi). The beef cheek was so tender and literally fall-apart. I didn't even need a knife. It was so flavourful too. It came with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. There was an olive and sun-dried tomato sauce on the beef that I found a too potent and overwhelming in flavour, but overall I still enjoyed the main. For dessert we had the chocolate tart. It had salted caramel on it and under the layer of chocolate was a layer of white chocolate fudge. It was very rich and decadent...overly so. I finished it nonetheless, lol. Service was excellent. We had several servers assigned to our group and they were attentive. They kept our water glasses and wine glasses full. Although I enjoyed the Pinot Grigio, I was driving, so had to limit myself to a glass and a half. Play Food and Wine Bar is owned by Stephen Beckta, who is a bit of a local celebrity, lol. His first restaurant is Beckta, which I have been to and while it's more upscale than Play, I actually enjoyed the food at Play more. His other restaurant is Gezellig, which is in my neighborhood (Westboro) and I've been to it a couple of times, and I definitely like Play better. I'm glad I was introduced to Play. The room we were in was lovely. It was long and narrow and had a bar. As with all restaurants in the Byward Market, parking is paid parkade parking or paid street parking only. Review #139 (2025)

"Soif: A Wine Bar That Forgets About Dinner" I understand…read morethat Soif is primarily a wine bar, but if food is on the menu, the portions should at least resemble a proper meal. Last night, I ordered the fish with vegetables. What arrived was honestly insulting: two tiny, sad slivers of fish perched on a bit of kale -- for $22. I'm not exaggerating when I say it couldn't have been more than 10 grams of fish. Imagine going out for dinner and your "main course" looks more like a garnish. My friend didn't fare any better. She ordered the crab guédille, which turned out to be served on what was essentially a hot dog bun. For the price and the setting, that choice felt lazy and downright ridiculous. Soif may be a place to enjoy wine, but the food should not feel like an afterthought or a joke at the customer's expense. Unless you plan to eat beforehand and only sip here, I cannot recommend Soif for dinner.

The selection is huge so getting recommendations is very important. I decided to go with a good wine pairing so I could try many different wines. I was not disappointed with the selections. The staff knew so much about every bottle and had a story to go along with it. Service was impressive. The food was good. The highlights were the charcuterie board, pork belly and Brussel sprouts. Ambience was casual and low key. It was a good experience especially having the opportunity to learn and try so much.

The vibe is always cozy and romantic, and the service is honestly top-notch every single time. Everyone is so friendly and attentive. We were seated next to a loud group of ladies, and without us even asking, our waiter noticed and moved us to a quieter section. Such a small gesture, but it made the night so much more enjoyable. He even brought us complimentary wine to help us celebrate, which was so thoughtful. The food was a bit of a mix this time. The tuna crudo was bursting with flavor: fresh, bright, and hands down one of the best dishes of the night. The lamb kebab, though, was way too salty, to the point where it was hard to really enjoy the flavors. And the salad was drenched in dressing, which made it wilted and heavy instead of refreshing. A shame, because Arlo is usually so consistent. Dessert totally redeemed things, though. The panna cotta was delicious, silky, smooth, and the perfect way to end the meal. Even with a couple hiccups, Arlo still holds a special place for us. Until next time, Arlo!
