You shimmy your way up to the counter and select from an array of deep fried balls containing a variety of savory goodness. I ordered the classic suppli - mostly because I speak nada Italiano so it was the easiest course of action without the ugly American guilt that comes with requiring native Romans to contour to my lack of multi-lingual prowess. I also ordered pasta with tomato and eggplant (I mean I AM walking a lot ....so get off my back!) - Pasta was decent and Suppli was not as flavorful as I was hoping. Slight hint of tomato and mozzarella was almost non-existent. Suppli costs by the piece and pasta is by the kilo so order to your liking. Prices are decent. I came here for the suppli, and got their classic one, which I believe was just called simply "suppli." Can't quite remember the price but it was cheap for a small snack. My first time having suppli, and while I wasn't the biggest fan, I don't think it had anything to do with how they made it--just my personal preference! The cheese inside was nice and stringy, and the suppli was hot and greasy. What I most enjoyed from here was actually their zucchini blossoms! I didn't know what they were before, so was surprised to see they were literal deep fried flowers of the zucchini plant. Excellent grab n' go snack or quick lunch in Trastevere with Roman-style pizza and fried risotto balls (supplì). This is a hole-in-the-wall packed with locals. It's standing room only inside and meant for grab n' go orders exclusively. There is a single chest-height table inside that you can stand and woof down your food if you so desire. They have several pizzas that are taken out of the oven, placed onto a warming tray, and cut into squares Roman style. But their specialty is the fried risotto balls called supplì. Though the menu on the wall lists some 20 versions, they only had about 4 varieties available at a time on both times we visited. I recommend getting the ones filled with minced meat. I don't know much Italian, so I just pointed to the darker supplì and discovered what was inside once I bit in. I selected one piece of white pizza that looked like it had zucchini on it but I couldn't tell what else...it didn't matter...it was delish. The best arincinis and supplis ever!! As you may already know, lining up or "queuing" doesn't really exist in Italy so yes, it can get brutal when it is packed but you will prevail! It is wort it. The trick is to copy how the locals order their food: go to the front, literally travel your way through the crowd and go to the front, be the loudest in ordering to get their attention, and be ready to point out what you want and how many. The crust was so good, crispy and thin. Much better than the other place in Campo di Fiori that we visited the day prior. We happen to be in Rome on a Thursday, so we took the H Bus from Termini to Trastevere. We got to I Suppli around 11:30am and they said that they're gnocchi will be available at 12n. So we walked around and shopped, then came back. When we got back, it was more crowded with locals. We ordered the gnocchi and their suppli and arancini. The three of us ate for 10.50 Euros. And it was delicious! So worth the bus ride! There's only a couple of tables you can stand up and eat your food in, but it was crowded. So we found a bench down the street to sit on and eat our food. Nearby, you can go to Piazza Mastai where there are benches, and you can eat your food there. read more

It changed my whole perception on calamari and really jump started my obsession with calamari in Italy! The pizza prosciutto and margherita slices were fresh and so tasty! The ingredients used so were simple and fresh. The cheese so fresh and pure, the tomato sauce slightly tart and perfect ratio but the crust was to die for!! Light, crispy and drizzled with olive oil. The slices are served by the square and go fast and sell out. The suppli which they are known for came as advertised! Popped over here in between seeing the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. An easy bus ride and good escape from the hustle and bustle of the touristy down town.
