I remember the few days I spent in Belfast fondly and of the many memories, my meal at the Barking Dog was a definite highlight. In a rather quaint and charming neighborhood, I took a nice short stroll from my Airbnb and came across this gem of an establishment and decided I had to check it out. I had a nice beer to start, and it wasn't a Guinness because stouts aren't my thing, but whatever it was I remember it being excellent and local. Undoubtedly you could make this place a regular haunt and there is no shortage of drinks and food options to make this a go-to for a date, celebration, or a quick meal. The staff are welcoming, kind, and helpful and the general atmosphere is chill. The food for me was ethereal - a burger isn't just a burger here and what you get when you bite into the beef shin burger is a little slice of Heaven. Moist and tender are a given but the taste is just so divine with the caramelized onion, cheddar, and horseradish mayo melding into an union of perfection. It's hard not to describe one of the most memorable meals of my life in such hyperbole but the vivid recall I have of this particular place is uncanny and merits all the praise I can heap upon the fine folks that run the place. If timing had worked out, I would have eaten as meals here as I could have but I'll thank my lucky stars for at least giving me one opportunity to eat such a wonderful burger at such a wonderful eatery. My kids were happily distracted with colouring in their menus while the lovely waitress took time to ask them their order instead of just asking me. They were also very impressed with the mini milkshakes provide in small milk bottles, like I would have got in school - a nice touch. It was burgers all round and they did not disappoint, good taste and ample portion size. The kids of course leaving just enough room for ice cream. Jack Harley's is a great spot, but not the cheapest. However in this case you do get what you pay for. Even my wife who's not a big fan of burgers commented how nice it was. The menu is full of tempting delights but I went for the Smokestack burger upon a recommendation. I have to say I was not disappointed! The Burger bun was soft and fluffy, the burger was meaty and the extras combination were sublime. The best part of the burger was definitely the 'secret' sauce - sort of like a vinegary mayo. I'm underselling it with that description. Burgers will set you back £6.45 but they are not small and you certainly won't be hungry after eating them. I loved Eddie Rocket's - the only tiny thing I would mention is that it took a while for us to get our food which made us rush eating it. I will put this down to how busy it was. The burgers are quite dry, they're extremely messy, which isn't a great thing if you're trying not to spill it all over yourself, the redeemer is the crack sauce which is pretty great. The fries are strange, they're the same quality as you would get from a good chip shop, but I don't think they goes very well with the whole American restaurant aesthetic they're going for. Really, if you're wanting to support local, eat here. If you're wanting to have something a bit more put together but for the exact same price, go eat at Five Guys.

For us it's an occasional cup of alright, organic coffee at a quid, or occasionally a cappuccino at £1.5. What makes this franchise worth 5 stars is the sheer friendliness of the staff and their enthusiasm despite low pay and zero benefits. It's really long past time for politicians to start taxing these multi nationals properly and compelling a living wage. It's really very simple here; if you open a small business and can't pay tax the tax man will tell you to close. So it follows if you employ people and can't pay living wages (when you drive a £100k motor and live in a mansion) then close. Some might see this as socialism - it's not it's basic fairness for the greater good. A concept we do well to embrace.
