Barking Dog Restaurant - beef shin burger is definitely not your average burger

I've had my fair share of memorable burgers from coast to coast in America, but just glancing at a picture of the beef shin burger transports me back across the pond to the Barking Dog. I remember the few days I spent in Belfast fondly and of the many memories, my meal at the Barking Dog was a definite highlight. In a rather quaint and charming neighborhood, I took a nice short stroll from my Airbnb and came across this gem of an establishment and decided I had to check it out. I had a nice beer to start, and it wasn't a Guinness because stouts aren't my thing, but whatever it was I remember it being excellent and local. Undoubtedly you could make this place a regular haunt and there is no shortage of drinks and food options to make this a go-to for a date, celebration, or a quick meal. The staff are welcoming, kind, and helpful and the general atmosphere is chill. The food for me was ethereal - a burger isn't just a burger here and what you get when you bite into the beef shin burger is a little slice of Heaven. Moist and tender are a given but the taste is just so divine with the caramelized onion, cheddar, and horseradish mayo melding into an union of perfection. It's hard not to describe one of the most memorable meals of my life in such hyperbole but the vivid recall I have of this particular place is uncanny and merits all the praise I can heap upon the fine folks that run the place. If timing had worked out, I would have eaten as meals here as I could have but I'll thank my lucky stars for at least giving me one opportunity to eat such a wonderful burger at such a wonderful eatery. A+ and a definite must when visiting Belfast.

One of only a few in Ireland ER's is already proving to be a big hit on the Lisburn Road. Yesterday when I paid a visit it was absolutely jam packed. But the pin striped, attentive staff managed to deal with the hoards of burger lover admirably. The whole restaurant follows the USA diner theme, red tiles, bold brash posters with American slogans and red leather booths. Right down to even the tiniest details this place is perfect - they have mini duke boxes (50's style) where you can pay 20p for your choice of song. Right on to the important bit, the food. The menu is full of tempting delights but I went for the Smokestack burger upon a recommendation. I have to say I was not disappointed! The Burger bun was soft and fluffy, the burger was meaty and the extras combination were sublime. The best part of the burger was definitely the 'secret' sauce - sort of like a vinegary mayo. I'm underselling it with that description. Burgers will set you back £6.45 but they are not small and you certainly won't be hungry after eating them. I loved Eddie Rocket's - the only tiny thing I would mention is that it took a while for us to get our food which made us rush eating it. I will put this down to how busy it was. The place certainly isn't understaffed. Top marks from me - there's so much on the menu to sample that I will have to make a trip back soon!

When you enter Eddies you can see that it is just like stepping into a real American diner and a great touch is that there is a juke box at every table. The food is great also. This is at heart a burger joint and they do it well. I had a smokestake burger and it was delicious. Applewood cheese, onion rings and secret sauce allll gooooood!!! I loved the food so much that I went back for seconds the next day and I can davey say that I will be back again.

I walked up the dark stairs to be greeted by one of the most friendly waitresses you are ever likely to meet. She sat me at a table of four even though I was on my own which made me feel less of a loser. I sat down and browsed the menu made up of various burgers. I was going to go for the double cheese burger when the waitress came over and showed me their offer. A double cheese burger, fries and a drink for £8! Unreal! I obviously went for that deal, helpfully guided by the waitress. The food took about 10 minutes to come, the chips were served on a tray and the burger dame covered in foil. Packed lunch style! The chips were deep fried but still had a potatoey consistency. The burger was American style just the way I like it. A soft bun and a tender burger patty with plenty of fresh salad. Incredible! The decor is dive style! Think graffiti! They have an alcohol licence too so if you fancy a beer and burger knock yourself out! Easy five stars, for service alone. This is my kind of place, can't wait to go back with some company!

I sort of found it strange that this place opened around the time that Five Guys appeared in Victoria Square, given that it has basically the exact same menu as Five Guys, with the exact same idea of it being a sort of "build your own" with as many toppings as you want. Kind of felt like they were trying to ride the coat-tails of Five Guys, but unfortunately they don't seem to be doing a very good job of it. It has the same high price as Five Guys (for 2 people, one having a double burger with bacon, the other having a single burger with cheese, some angry fries to share and two milkshakes, it was £24), but unfortunately it doesn't quite have as much of an appeal in terms of the quality of the food. The burgers are quite dry, they're extremely messy, which isn't a great thing if you're trying not to spill it all over yourself, the redeemer is the crack sauce which is pretty great. The fries are strange, they're the same quality as you would get from a good chip shop, but I don't think they goes very well with the whole American restaurant aesthetic they're going for. Really, if you're wanting to support local, eat here. If you're wanting to have something a bit more put together but for the exact same price, go eat at Five Guys.

And good luck to them. The business proves there's a huge market for assembly line high sugar, high fat, highly processed factory food. I mean they don't even use fresh onions. For us it's an occasional cup of alright, organic coffee at a quid, or occasionally a cappuccino at £1.5. What makes this franchise worth 5 stars is the sheer friendliness of the staff and their enthusiasm despite low pay and zero benefits. It's really long past time for politicians to start taxing these multi nationals properly and compelling a living wage. It's really very simple here; if you open a small business and can't pay tax the tax man will tell you to close. So it follows if you employ people and can't pay living wages (when you drive a £100k motor and live in a mansion) then close. Some might see this as socialism - it's not it's basic fairness for the greater good. A concept we do well to embrace.
