I'm a sucker for a good chippy, and Bright's is a good chippy. I used to work in Castlecourt and at least once a week someone would go on a run to Brights to get everyone a big feed. I wouldn't head there for fine dining, but for a quick lunch, or a recharge whilst out shopping, it certainly hits the spot! read more

This previously greasy-spoon stalwart of High Street has had a makeover, brightened up if you will with gleaming white tiles and funky graphics, but sadly that is the only thing that has changed. The menu remains the tried and tested Ulster Frys, chips, toasties and chips, meat and chips or lasagne and chips..you get where I'm going with this, it's pretty unhealthy calorific fayre, but sometimes that's just what you want. And I did. None of the staff seemed to know who had responsibility for what, and we sort of loitered for a while wondering whether to seat ourselves or not. When we were finally were seated (to a far from food-free table) we were handed a couple of sticky menus and left to our own devices. My friend was on his lunch break, so we were pretty tight for time and had to grab a waitress to take our order. The food came eventually, and all I can say is ordinary. I don't mean to be mean, and the new look is an improvement, but if the food is greasy and bland and the service mediocre, maybe there are other places than the walls the owners might want to consider refreshing. If you are in the area and starving it'll do, and if you don't have high expectations it is fine. read more

There are lots of places in the city centre to stop to eat but breakfast with the girls was in brights this morning, we didn't have to wait at all to be seated and the staff were a delight! The good thing about brights is there is lots of seating and the kitchen and deli is open so you can watch your meal be prepared, I had a panini and the girls had Frys.. (I was trying to be healthy). We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast and the staff were joking away and full of chit chat as we waited.. I will be back soon for another feed as it was delicious! read more

Brights restaurant is a great place to go if you fancy a bit of lunch at a reasonable price. Situated slap bang in the middle of town, Brights is very easy to find but if you cant seem to notice its signs then you will surely be drawn in by its specials board out the front! Famous for its Ulster fry, this calorie induced hangover buster is perfect to settle your stomach before you go venturing around the shops. The menu is full of delicious homemade favourites like lasagne, Irish stew, pork chops and chicken and ham pie, but if its a real hearty meal your after then I would recommend the gammon and champ - well portioned, tasty and good value for money! read more

It was getting towards 3pm but I still hadn't had any lunch. As most cafes have given up serving lunch Brights seemed to be a viable alternative. Though I was ravenous it seemed too late for a big fry up and I wasn't in the mood for sanwiches or paninis. I quite fancied the chilli potato wedges but went for an omelette thinking it would be light but kind of nutritious and sustaining. It took took a while to arrive, maybe because they were debating how to make it because the finished product wasn't really what I had in mind - a thick pad of egg with ham and much melted cheese. Anyone who has been on a cookery course will know how you are drilled in omelette making - whoever was in the kitchen that day obviously wasn't. Still it was tasty and filling though a bit expensive for what it was. Very poor and rude staff from the minute you walk in the door. Fry was not very nice, potato bread was very over cooked and tasted discussing, soda bread was so thin and crispy it was like cardboard. Tea was so weak it was like hot water and milk. Not only problems with the food but in interior was very dark and didnt look very clean. The walls where damaged in places and the edges of the floor had scum on it and the walls. Do not recommend at all, very poor standards. read more

Despite being full of places to eat and drink, I was finding t tricky to find somewhere in Belfast to grab a good brekkie. Brights was recommended by the local bus tour guide as 'the best wee breakfast in Belfast!' Good enough for us! Walked in and it there was a few free booths, but we were seated at an awkward centre table. I asked for a booth and was completely ignored. Ok. While ordering I asked could I have a hash brown instead of mushrooms and was abruptly told 'yes you'll have to pay for it though'. Again...ok: Our food was thrown at us 15 minutes later and the most annoying thing was that it tasted lovely! The service was so bad that I almost wanted it to be rubbish. Portions were large, price was decent and coffee was hot, The best breakfast in Belfast maybe, but don't expect a smile or service. read more

I literally had a quickie brekkie on the run of soda bread, potato bread, egg, sausage and bacon. It was delicious, wholesome and great value for money!!! Will defo try the main menu!!! Staff are great, chef obviously brilliant and service and price is reflective. So definitely worth a visit!!!!! read more

This place has become quite renowned as a thee place to go for that cheeky high cholesterol treat, a fry. I've been to this Brights only once, there is another situated on Castle Street, it was often one of my haunts when I was studying journalism. Brights have an extensive unhealthy menu with a spattering if things not so sinful thrown in for good measure (the odd bagel or two) While I was there it was a small fry. Sausage, bacon, egg, potato bread, soda, tomato and I believe black pudding. A reasonably amount of food for a 'small fry'. The bacon was a bit on the chewy, under a heat lamp texture but the rest was up to a reasonably high standard considering the cost. This was washed down with a bottle of diet coke (not the most traditional accompaniment I will admit) Friendly staff and pretty solid service. You do get a real sense of being in Belfast when you're sitting in somewhere like Brights. The accent and demeanor is intrinsically Belfast. I would recommend going for something traditional and simple like a full fry. Go and clog the old arteries. read more

It is not often that I am left speechless by a meal in a restaurant. But Brights takes the trophy of 'World's Best Restaurant'. I'll start with the few bad things. The new renovation has made look more modern, yes. But it means that there are less seats. Brights always had a problem with queues and creating less space does NOT help it's cause. The only other bad thing is the long waiting to actually receive your order. On busy days it can take 30-45 minutes, sometimes nearly an hour, so it's far from an express restaurant, however, it's definitely worth the wait. I only ever take chips, I only ever review a place on it's chips. The chips served here are 2nd to absolutely none. They're made from scratch (causing the long wait) and they are cooked to perfection. Even the hard bits taste fantastic, and that's saying something! The vinegar (love that stuff) is malt, therefore brilliant. I've never needed to go to anywhere else in Belfast because this place is perfect. Chip lovers, do yourself a favour, visit here. I've reviewed the other Bright's restaurant and wasn't to friendly about it. Thankfully, its sister, just across the other side of town is a lot better. This place is huge, so there's no waiting for a table for an eternity. The staff are brilliant and always really cheery. What I like most about this place, is that the kitchen is in full view of the restaurant, so you can see everything that's going on. The business of the of the chef's running around, cooking frantically gives the place an energy which you wouldn't find in your usual greasy spoon. Their battered fish is some of the nicest I have ever tasted. The prices are still a little on the steep side for a cafe but the food almost justifies it. read more

I've never been a huge fan of Brights. They serve very traditional food, fish and chips and fry's etc, but frankly I find it boring. With Belfast's City Centre now booming and the entire city becoming more metropolitan, dirty spoon cafe's just don't seem to reflect the new vibe. This isn't somewhere where you could relax and chat with friends over food; it doesn't have that friendly atmosphere. This place just has no class. read more

Fish & Chips is a bedrock of our culture. Fish & Chips have always been my favourite dish, so I'll talk about my addiction to the Bright's fish supper, since that's what I (almost) always have. Bright's chips are proper thick chips and taste great, you can tell that Bright's put effort into getting their chips right, there are no too-crispy or too greasy chips here. The fish is battered to perfection, and just melts in your mouth along with the fish. Portion size is just right, not too little, not too much, and comes with mushy peas that complete the meal perfectly. I've read reviews of people on here complaining that the restaurant is too busy - well the restaurant is in the city center - and the crowds come for the great food and a pot of tea - and of course a sit down while they're out shopping! I've also tried their "the works" fry - it's really great value. Forget McD's and KFC - Brights is a gem of a restaurant - it should be a tourist attraction!!! Five stars from me, I can't fault it! read more
