Eric Marts did my tattoo 5 years ago at this point. I spent over $1000 dollars on work that has had me always wearing long-sleeves ever since. I hate to leave a negative review because I know it's not easy to make a living as an artist but I can't express how disappointing getting this tattoo was. Line work is so jagged and shaky. Flow, cohesion, and shape, abysmal. For a negative space ocean scene it definitely lacks the smoothness, elegance, and fluidity one would like to see. When I pointed out about the rough lines and asked him to fix them he said "oh yeah I see what you mean" and went over one or two spots and it still pretty much looked as bad as it did before. I thought I was trusting the process in someome who has been tattooing longer than I have been alive but I was just getting a scratcher from someone who didn't have the professional honesty or common decency to say "this isn't really something I'm best at, I'll pass it to someone else." This was not my first tattoo and the other went in smooth and clean with linework that still holds up. His other work he posts looks good but people have to know before signing up with him that he also lets people walk out of the shop with abominations like this. The front side of the tattoo looks decent but if I got a paint job on a car where the drivers side looked solid and the passenger side looked like this, I would also be quite disappointed. I wouldn't recommend this guy to my worst enemy. Many regrets. read more

Can't believe I haven't reviewed Super Genius yet! WTF!?! Damon, the owner was recommended by my awesome uncle, who happens to be a local artist of color. I told him I was seeking an artist who loves what they do, and one extremely talented; specifically knowing how to ink color on people of color. I had an old, small tattoo I wanted covered and turned into something more meaningful. Now that I'm getting older, it matters who's touching me, and their energy must be right. When meeting Damon for my consult, I honestly didn't know what I wanted or expected. Looking around the studio at his art, it's clear he has a unique style, and stunning color work! Thankfully he didn't turn up his nose and walk away when I requested lace, feathers, jewels lol. He doesn't copy others art and really thought about all the random features I requested. My first session was a month or 2 later, and thats when he revealed my piece. My tattoo is unique, colorful, and one of a kind. Damon's beautiful soul makes it even more meaningful. Yea, 3 long sessions and some pain was well worth it. He took his time, introduced me to some good tunes, heard some unforgettable stories, and I enjoyed every minute with him and his artists. I've never been a person to put much thought into tattoos- I just like the experience. I've always done flash events because it felt easier than looking for a more permanent artist- and SuperGenius always has really solid flash events. I had done a few flash events and last year I got tattooed by Zack at one of their events. Not only was he super friendly and professional, but he also gave me a great tattoo. I went back to him a month later and then again and again. I'm finally starting to put tattoos on my body that I really LOVE and am proud of, and that's all thanks to Zack! I'm super happy with the work he's put in and I can't wait to continue adding more of his art to my collection. Bonus points- I had to park in a parking garage for an evening appointment. Being a 25-year-old female and thinking about walking back to my car at night in a dark garage made me extremely nervous. I mentioned it to Zack during our appointment and without hesitation he said he would walk me back to my car after the session. He didn't say "oh you'll be fine don't worry" or "you're being paranoid, relax" like I've gotten countless times before. He listened to me and made it clear that if I ever felt uncomfortable, either him or any of the other SuperGenius employees would be happy to escort me back to my car. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this shop. I had a couple of tattoos done by Zack Taylor at the end of March. I've included photos of what they look like now, mid-May, so not even fully settled yet! The 8 ball is mostly fine, though the text is completely illegible. I'm not even salty about this one because we discussed this possibility at the time of my appointment (according to him, using needles of multiple widths in a single tattoo "looks bad" so he couldn't just use a thinner one for the text), and he ended up changing it from what I originally wanted to say. I suggested that he just put "IDK" because I didn't think any of the options were actually going to fit better than the original, but he opted for this. I trusted him to make the best call, but obviously, that was a mistake on my part. The one on my wrist is just bad. Anyone can tell you that. I communicated with him the first week or so afterward about how it was healing, expressing my concern that it was blowing out (I've attached a photo I sent to him and you can see it looks like it's "leaking"). He told me it was a "scab" and to chill, that he'd touch it up once it was healed. A touch-up would help somewhat, but there's not a lot of room to fix it, honestly. He refuses to do so now, anyway. Full disclosure: we had a personal relationship that ended badly since my appointment. Tattooing is super intimate, and I completely understand him not being comfortable with touching it up at this point. The feeling is mutual, but this is also the skin I have to live in every day. Having a very visible, poorly done tattoo is distressing and honestly feels disfiguring. I thought he could muster the professionalism to at least resolve the issue in some mutually agreeable manner (e.g., having someone else do the touch-up, a partial refund so I could have someone at another shop fix it) and felt it was unfair not to give him the opportunity because it's literally his job. Tattoos are mostly permanent, and they can seriously impact our self-image. It's a sensitive situation. Unfortunately, he was dismissive, callous, and degrading. I'd include screenshots of that exchange but he took out an insurance policy by weaponizing intimate details of my personal life and our relationship. At that point, I contacted the shop directly because I didn't feel like it was fair to punish the shop with a negative review without giving them an opportunity to resolve the issue. The personal issues between Zack and I have absolutely nothing to do with the shop or my tattoo being bad. Let me be clear that everything that transpired between us took place outside of the shop, my actual appointment was uneventful and we parted with a hug. I haven't been back into the shop at any point since my initial appointment. I am not sure who I spoke to specifically, but I've attached screenshots of the conversation. Essentially: the shoddy work that comes out of their shop isn't their problem, and I'm, respectfully, 86'd because their employee doesn't know how to keep personal and professional matters separate. I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the fact that he was bragging about sleeping with clients during my appointment. They seem confident that this won't become a liability to the shop, but I wouldn't be so sure. I knew Zack when he was a broke apprentice making paper towel runs in Port Orchard and I thought he respected his craft more. This led me to ignore the negative reviews about him, and that was a mistake. He's loyal only to his ego. Not only will he not lose any sleep over giving you a crappy tattoo, but he seems to derive some sort of pleasure from doing so if he has a problem with you. That is NOT someone you can trust to permanently alter your body. The respect that your tattooer shows your body should NEVER be conditional. While Super Genius has some rad artists, I would seriously caution anyone against patronizing a shop that condones this attitude in its artists. Apparently, they are of the mind that no publicity is bad publicity and have zero qualms about their shop being associated with objectively bad work. Your ability to feel comfortable in your skin is not a priority or even a concern to them. That is a violation of the trust you extend to your tattooer with your body, and that trust is SACRED. Don't give your money to people who would dishonor it. I fully anticipate a response from the business owner attempting to discredit this review as some sort of personal vendetta. You have the photos and the receipts, plus all the other negative reviews with the same (!) common theme. So that's ultimately your call, and I really hope you don't make the same mistake that I did. read more

Go to Janelle! At first, I was very nervous to get my first tattoo... but I am so happy that I found an artist like Janelle to do the honors. I knew she would do a great job looking at her work on Instagram (@janellemevelyn). She does a lot of beautiful flowers, leaves and other foliage. She made me feel very comfortable during our consultation. I showed her many reference photos of what I wanted my little sprig of parsley to look like as well as placements I was thinking of. She steered me into the right direction with my ideas and we decided to do the tattoo along the back of my left arm. The art she drew up was exactly how I pictured it in my mind. I can tell she paid very close attention to my requests. The tattoo experience itself was also very pleasant. Her tattoo table is very comfortable... I actually fell asleep for a little bit. Janelle is very nice to talk to as well. We had great conversation throughout the session. Overall I am super happy about my tattoo experience and the tattoo as well. To this day my tattoo still looks amazing and I get tons of compliments whenever I can show it off and wear a tank top. This review is for Nate Leslie. I had a consult with him in January and put a $200 deposit for a March appointment. I know that not all tattoo artists give sketches ahead of time so I asked if he could give me a sketch a few weeks prior to my appointment especially as it was a bigger piece and my first tattoo. He agreed. One week (Monday) before the appointment and I hadn't received a sketch or any communication. I still hadn't heard anything from him so on Friday I sent another email to cancel and ask for the deposit back as it was too close to the appointment time with no delivery of promised sketch or even a response to my Monday email. He finally responded and said he would not be refunding the deposit, that his advice to me was to put more faith in my tattoo artist and "to take this as a lesson for my next tattoo." He promised a product, didn't deliver and then was attempting to condescendingly flip the blame onto me. This experience was extremely disappointing as I have no tattoo, out of $200 and then told that the situation was my problem. read more

I got my first tattoo here because a friend recommended this place. Unfortunately, I did not get the tattoo I was hoping for; the lines are heavy when I asked for fine linework, and the image is shaded in when I asked for no shading. I've spent time trying to convince myself that I like this tattoo, but I just hate it. As this was my first tat, I didn't know that I should have asked him for an image of exactly what he'd be tattooing on my body. He seemed confident that he knew what I wanted, and I trusted him. I'm very disappointed by this tattoo and am now looking for ways to change its appearance or cover it up. The image was one of my own drawings so I'm very confused as to how the image turned out so differently. I've been wanting (but chickening out of getting) a tattoo for the better part of two decades. Less than a month ago, I thought of a design I wanted - a 45 record adapter - and bragged on my Facebook page that I was going to get it... on my 45th birthday. That was it. I had to do it. No backing down, as I was reminded daily of my obligation to myself, my friends and family. Two things left to settle - what studio do I choose... and what artist? I scanned Yelp and found two shops near my home which were "walk-in" friendly, then checked them out in the early afternoon of my 45th. The first spot was a bit snobby for my taste - their "philosophy" is that their artists should create for the client whatever they see fit, and that they prefer to do large, multi-session pieces to something as pedestrian as I wanted. Though they were well-reviewed, I got a bad vibe from this studio and left. Next stop, another studio - huge, very clean... and very empty. Only one artist on duty at the time, and it looked like he was working on a complicated back piece. I asked the desk if there would be walk-ins available later, and she noted that a "guest artist" would be arriving later in the day, but might not be able to fit me in. I got the strong impression that, with one artist on staff, and a "guest" coming in later, that perhaps this shop, as nice as it looked, wasn't able to keep artists. I was bummed. I texted a good friend who'd had a lot of ink done, and she recommended Super Genius. She went further by giving me the email address of Ashley (new in town from Boston). A quick back and forth via email and I was booked for an appointment at 5pm the next day. I had never been inside the shop before, but when I went in, I immediately liked it. The studio and the people working there seemed to be totally non-pretentious. I filled out a little paperwork while Ashley got her station ready, then she came out with the line art for my design (which I'd sent her an idea of the day before). It was about 1/3 bigger than I had an idea of in my mind's eye, and the position she recommended was a little different than I'd thought about, but I trusted her judgement and moved forward. I am so glad I did it her way! Ashley was very nice to this 45 year old first-timer. Very conversational. I was apologetic about the design I wanted, that is was a simple design, all black... as a creative person myself, I didn't think there'd be much challenge for her as an artist. Ashley reassured me that every tattoo is another experience for the artist, and that my choice was valid. After about an hour, the job was done. I was pleased to find that the pain was a LOT less than I thought it would be, and the result was fantastic! I'll be back! read more

I haven't always had the best experiences with tattoo artists/shops, so I knew when searching for my half sleeve to be completed, I wanted to find a place that I was comfortable at. I spent a decent amount of time researching artists and their shops. I found SuperGenius and saw the reviews and started checking out their artists. Matt Wear instantly stuck out to me. His previous work was what I was looking for, but I wanted to vibe with him as well. We had a FaceTime consult (due to covid) and he was very easy to talk to and was confident in tackling what I was asking for. I walked in a few weeks later and finally got to see what he drew up for me. It was perfect and I didn't want to make any changes (I essentially gave him free reign as it was a cover up & I just wanted it to look nice)! Each session, Matt was easy to talk to/work with, professional, clean, and his prices are reasonable. I didn't interact too much with the rest of the staff, but whenever I did, they were also very nice and professional. Ryan Rodgers rocks! (How's that for an alliteration!?) I seriously don't think I could get a tattoo from anyone else. Ryan is really nice and patient. I think I had him change the placement of my first tattoo at least a few times. No grumbles came from his end. I got my first tattoo from him and he made me feel super comfortable. I recently decided to add more ink to my chest and came to him with just three words. He drew my tattoo up even cooler than I had imagined it. He definitely deserves the title of tattoo ARTIST. Plus, he does free touch-ups. So, you don't have to keep dishing out loads of cash if your tattoo fades or gets spotty. Also, my friend told me she wrote a paper on tattoo shops for school and this said that this one was always highest ranked in cleanliness scores, as well as other things. I think they charge about $125/hour. Which I'm sure is more than those tattoo shops that are staffed with old crusty dudes who wear cut off shirts, listen to butt-rock and don't give a shit if you like THEIR tattoo charges. But, if you're going to get something on your body for-ev-er, make sure you go to a place that's going to do it right. Made an app with Robbie He quoted me 500 for 3 hours on a pair of clippers. He was 3 hours late to my appointment. He threw his client before me under the bus by blaming her for everything. (Didnt contact me to tell me to come in later) Told me he should have a business license but doesnt. (Seems like something I wouldnt tell my clients) I got to listen to his co worker talk about how easy it is to rip people off. 3 hours in he says we need to break it up into sessions (after i told him i only brought the amount of money he asked for). Said he wanted to wait 3 weeks to finish it and he would cut me a deal next time. He then charged me 400$ so with the deposit I gave him 500$ I contacted the owner Damon and he was kind enough to respond by blowing the most amount of hot air right up my ass. Said he would talk to him and never got back to me. My recommendation to you is find a better place to go. There are many other places with artists that are better and have more respect for you, your time, and your money! read more

I found her on IG and instantly fell in love with her style. She was really quick to respond to my questions via email and she is really detail oriented, and wants you to be happy with your tattoo. Not sure if I am going 3 star or 4 star here. I got tattooed here last year as I am local to the area and am "restarting" my tattoo goals that will aid in my personal growth. I wanted a shop in Capital Hill specifically, I chose Super Genius because really they had the best availability with their walk-ins then most other shops I checked out. Clean shop, gal behind the desk was very helpful and I really did like the shop lay out. When it comes to tattoos and my biggest take away from this experience is it doesn't need to matter if your artist is a dick, clearly forgets specific details discussed before drawing up the stencil, goes against their word about overall cost caps, leaves a few needed touch ups (that you know your not gonna go back for because why would you?) and is unapologetic about their lack of punctuality and communication abilities. You know why? Because you get to see the stencil and ask for the appropriate changes before the work is done, because the overall interaction was fine until it was over, because it is easy to get a touch up from another artist, because what it REALLY comes down to is your tattoo. It needs to be what you want, you need to love it and it needs to be as bad ass as you envisioned. You don't have to find a buddy in your artist in order to get a good piece of art, so even if they're kind of an asshole it doesn't matter because the tattoo you left with is exactly what you wanted. So, if you agree with this, Super Genius should work out for you. The shop seems clean and legit. Picked an artist with good portfolio had every reason to believe would be awesome. Although felt artist rushed the day of my tattoo. Let me start with I used to be a tattoo artist I do have high standards as you should it's permanent. I am very dissatisfied with the tattoo I got it's not straight, not deep enough some spots too deep others, over half of the ink came out immediately and the artist is aware of how it healed and that I'm unhappy. I don't want him to fix it at this point. I have sent him pictures of the tattoo healed. Waste of my hand, money & time. Overall worst tattoo experience I've ever had. Well, I just saw her for a five hour long session yesterday. I am in love with her Queen of Thorns portrait. I didn't know you could love a tattoo this much. So I had been working on an arm sleeve and was about 80% done when my tattoo artist passed away. Very devastating. I was then on the search over the next year to find an artist to finish it. I found Janelle @ supergenius and really liked her style/ work. I needed to add a couple pieces to fill empty space and then wanted three twinkles/swirl shading that I have on my collar bone area to be brought throughout my arm to make it all blend. My first session with her was great. Did 2 butterflies, Very happy. 2nd session she did the bee/sunflower which the center wasn't even filled in all the way and looks weird (nothing like a sunflower center) AND she accidentally nicked my arm in the middle of a petal. I'm pretty chill and love color so didn't mind changing colors to hide the line. She also put little it's instead of twinkles where she had started the filler. 3rd session we filled in the sunflower a bit to try and hide the line (it didn't cover it). So our last session she went darker to cover it, touched up my old flowers and then I told her I hadn't wanted it's but since she already did some I was cool with both twinkles and x's so it would blend. The next day I unwrapped it and literally started having a panic attack. The shading/swirls on the top part of my arm looked nothing like what I already had/ what we were going for. I tried to tell myself it'll fade and I'm over reacting but the more I looked at it the more upset I was getting. So I emailed her explaining how unhappy I was. She said it'll fade and to let her know once it's healed if I want her to fix it. So I waited 2 months. It's a little lighter but I still absolutely hate it. The shape looks like a feather or the side of a whale. I told her that and asked for a refund ONLY for that piece I didn't like PLUS the 30mins she charged me to FIX THE SUNFLOWER SHE RUINED. she told me no refunds and said she would fix it and said she didn't charge me for the sunflower but she did. I was there 5 hours total. She charged me for 5 hours. Didn't subtract the 3 breaks, the time in the beginning when I was waiting or the time to fix the flower.i told her if she could fix it I would have her do that but there's literally nothing you can do and then she blocked me on Instagram. Do not go to her. She doesn't listen. Ive now been looking into removal. I am not someone to ever ask for a refund but I feel terribly ripped off. Nobody at this shop was even friendly or welcoming ANY visit I had there besides her. Terrible customer service. read more

I came for a event and got to be tattooed by Kate @katlaw_tattoos and had the best experience. Kate was so patient when I asked for a break , did 2 amazing tattoos , and didn't make me feel bad about using numbing cream ( other artists / shops have ). The front of house staff, cleanliness etc were also top notch. Definitely recommend checking Kate out along with the other talented artists in the shop. read more
