I have been going to see Janelle at SuperGenius for almost two years now and she is my favorite tattoo artist on this planet. I have been getting tattoos for over a decade from different shops and artists and I can honestly say that Janelle has a client for life in me, and I'll always go to see her. I have 4 large tattoos from her and we are currently working on an entire sleeve. Her detail is out of this world and I constantly have people come up to me on the street and ask me where I got my tattoos from. Not only is Janelle one of the most talented artists out there, she is the nicest person and will make your appointment feel like fun! Really enjoyed my time at SuperGenius and my tattoo came out better then imagined! Based on the portfolios, I choose to reach out to the artist Nate Leslie. Booking with him was a breeze and his work turned out fantastic! He really took his time to produce quality work and I just can't stop admiring it! I didn't catch the name of the guy who was checking people in at the front desk but he was friendly and quick to acknowledge customers entering the shop. I was in the chair for about 5 hours and watched different artist work and everyone seemed to have a good attitude and took care of their clients. This place was recommended by a friend of a friend. I did not have fun. I showed up at the time for which I'd made the appointment. They said they didn't have me on the schedule and they must have forgotten to write it down. A tattoo artist asked me to follow him back to his station, and because I thought we were about to have our consult, I followed. He then proceeded to show a bunch of his new artwork, quickly told me my tattoo "wouldn't work", then continued talking about his art. His tattoo art consisted of dead babies, dying babies, severed and bloody baby heads on ice cream cones, and babies slitting their own throats. He spoke of how fun it is to tattoo dead and bloodied babies on people who also hate babies. I understand that everyone has his or her own world view. And I respect that fact. But anyone who thinks it is normal to talk to complete strangers right off the bat about baby murders and baby hatred might need to rethink how to approach customers. Perhaps his artwork was outstanding, but the fact that he didn't think twice before talking to me about killing babies worried me. Oh, and he still didn't help me with my tattoo ideas. Also a problem. As I walked out the door, they suggested I schedule another appointment. I declined. read more

I rarely ever end up being this negative in a review, but the service here was unambiguous theft. I searched through the various shops in Seattle before setting in on Super Genius. I found the particular artist and set up a consultation to do some design work before the official tattoo. During this consultation, I plunked down a deposit for a tattoo. After 2 MONTHS of getting jerked around... The artist just disappeared With my money I can only imagine how terrible this would be if I had started actual tattoowork with the artist, as I would have an incomplete tattoo with no chance of the artist actually finishing the work. Given that I neither have my tattoo, design, or money, I plan on opening up a Better Business Bureau complaint, as this is just a poor way to treat your clients. To the shop's credit, they have tried to make amends with the various clients that the artist left behind. I don't have any expectations or delusions about getting some kind of exceptional service, but I don't think its out of line to expect to get a service you paid for. read more

Do not go here for flash events. The designs by some of the artists are amazing, but it turns out even if you request that specific artist to do your tattoo, you won't get them. I've come to TWO flash events with the hope of getting a good piece done, and TWICE come home to a tattoo that, quite frankly, I'm embarrassed to have. Both flash pieces I've had done here look like something someone's cousin would give you in their garage for $20. Both of my pieces were done rushed, are crooked, and have lazy shading. Both pieces have a hand/fingers, and they look like they were done by someone who has never seen a hand before. My wife also got a flash tattoo done here (by the same guy who messed up my first one), and she is also just as unhappy with hers. We're currently looking at ways to cover up these stupid tattoos that we could have had done for the same price, somewhere else, and not half-assed. Anyways. Beware. read more

Little Heidi is the best. She did an add on to my back piece and is in the middle of blending the old and the new together. You can't tell that there are two different artists which was a HUGE concern of mine. I am a perfectionist and I like my artists to be, well, artists- not just tattoo artists. All of my tattoos are custom and very individual, so I don't mess around with just anybody. Plus, she's funny and intelligent. Talks when you want to & doesn't when you don't, which is a plus. This is a tough review to write, because I don't want to be a huge dick but I did have a somewhat awkward experience. The ink itself was top notch, so they still get 4 stars no matter what. First off, I came in with two friends. They'd had a bit to drink but were not drunk by any stretch of the imagination. I will admit that one of them is very outgoing and blunt in his delivery, but that is just who he is. Some people like him, and some find him obnoxious. We were pretty psyched about SuperGenius, as we'd been referred specifically to this shop and the designs we were there for had a lot of meaning. When we first walked up to the counter (after calling ahead to schedule), the guys weren't very friendly. Immediately, there was a personality clash of sorts between my more obnoxious companion and a couple of the artists. Basically, he didn't like the way the first artist he spoke to proposed to cover up his small existing piece and he wanted to check out a couple other books. This didn't go over well and the guys at the front took offense. I kind of wish they'd just told him to leave/come back another time and focused on me during that visit if they were really not feeling him. Anyhow, he ended up booking with Axi, which I will get to in greater detail. As for me, the first artist I spoke to was visibly disinterested in my design - and after agreeing to do it, sort of ignored me for an hour... he'd said he was sketching up a design (I showed him several examples on my laptop) and instead was just chilling on his phone and then finally did a quick Google search and printed up the first result you will find with the obvious search string. I didn't like the design (plus he didn't draw it) and tried to discuss it with him, but he was already agitated (I was later told) by my friend and thus backed out of all participation on my piece without even speaking to me directly. So I ended up booking with Blake, who was more interested in drawing something by hand based on the examples I walked in with, and is mega talented. Ok, so by this point we'd been hanging out for over two hours waiting to start tattooing. We were still down, and eager to get going. Finally, the tattooing began - My small design was quoted at $150 and he ended up charging $200 for what I could have gotten for half that price elsewhere...but of course I paid it once the work was done. He did do a very good job and most of the artists here are top notch; this is just *not* a cheap shop. During my tattoo, Blake was generally friendly towards me and one of my friends but was openly upset with the other one. A large degree of awkward shit-talking went down (to me, about my friend). While in retrospect I wish they'd just dealt with him directly and kept me out of it, I can't blame them fully if they didn't happen to vibe well with someone and homeboy wasn't respecting their social cues. My tattoo itself - again - was very good. I get compliments on it all the time; some people even think it's fake. The tattoo Axi did (which was also a cover up) turned out great and she was really sweet and accommodating given the weirdness in the air. She did a somewhat large piece (elbow to wrist) in two sittings, or about seven hours. Axi took a lot of care in her consult, and made sure the design was just what he wanted. She also seemed fine with him and didn't seem put out at all. Her shading is particularly impressive, as is the highlighting and lettering. Her total price for that piece was very reasonable considering her level of talent - but not cheap, and not what was quoted. She specializes in portraits, so if you're in the market for one you should check out her book. You should also note that they take CASH ONLY. When we were there for the first session(s), we had to walk a couple blocks down to a grocery store to find a working ATM. The second session, the restaurant next door had their ATM up so it was much less hassle. I still think this is a great shop, we unfortunately just had some weird drama. read more

3 starts to the shop- The floors are not sealed which grosses me out. Not sure about you but cleanliness is pretty important for tattoos. Also, they have no health inspections and are not licensed. They pay the fine for not being licensed every year and do nothing else about it. Not healthy. 1 star to the owner. - His business ethic is non-existent and he is a self centered, self indulgent, narcissistic brat to clients and his staff. 5 stars to most of the artists. Ashley, Axi, Blake, Brad, Kyler, Thomas, Pete and Mike (Now in Miami) are all 100% top notch in their areas of expertise. I just wish they had what they needed to really thrive. read more

My best friend and I were in town visiting and had our minds set to get commemorative, almost-matching tattoos. We were lucky because it was super early in the day, they were just opening up, and there were two male artists available to assist us at the same time... The artists were super cool. We all engaged in good conversation, sharing mutual life experiences from the Bay Area & love for the Pacific Northwest, all while they set up their equipment and attended to our specific creative tattoo requests. I have to mention that the shop felt like a hot-boxed sauna...! It was so damn hot that summer morning, and the studio was so damn muggy. So the entire time we were getting our work done, we were all noticeably sweaty and clearly uncomfortable. The most annoying thing that happened at the end of our session was one of the artists blatantly said, "Dude, I should turn on the a/c..." (wth?! NO $#!* Sherlock!) To make matters worse and more annoying within days of returning home from our little getaway, my ink was clearly not healing well (it's the smallest tattoo of the 6 I already have). I treated it the same way I treated my other tats, but it was evident that the quality of the work was poor. As time went on the scabbing cleared up, but left me with a totally faded, washed-out commemorative tattoo. My artist and this place... Not so genius! read more

First tattoo! Checked around at all the different Seattle studios and spent a lot of time (like two years) thinking about the first tattoo and where I would go. Had a good friend come in to town and finally decided I was ready to do this. Called around to a few different studios on a Sunday afternoon. Super Genius was very helpful and super gracious about the whole thing. They talked to me over the phone about what I was going to get, then set me up with a time about two hours later and I was able to walk in talk with the same person I had talked to before and then a few minutes later she was the artist doing the job. Ashley (from Boston) is an outstanding artist. She was easy-going and committed to what I wanted. She did a super straight job with the text on my arm. She was friendly and did a great job! She was extra patient while I picked out the font and made some great suggestions. I will be back! Super Genius is a high quality, professional studio. Well worth the money spent and job done! Emily Hanzal was extremely professional and clean as well as consistent in touching bases with me throughout the whole tattoo process. Prior to arriving for my appointment Emily and I chatted via email and she was quick to respond, which was great considering I was arranging for this piece out of town. This was also a great deal for a great tattoo. If it were just Emily this review would be five stars. When I entered SuperGenius the energy was prime for tattooing- folks were working quietly in the open space, Bob Marley was playing and for the first hour of tattooing I was as cool as a cucumber. Once more artists showed the music switched from mellow to punk and loud-as-f**k and the tattoo-bro-zone switched on with fellas hollering across the studio at one another. I dig having an open loft-like space but I think the guys need to take it down a few notches with clients around. read more

I have gotten a few different tattoos here by Chris and not only have the tattoos been amazing, the vibe of the shop is awesome and I always have great interactions with the staff. I see other reviews on here ragging on artists for taking a break and/or charging the hourly rate despite taking breaks. Really? I can only imagine the amount of focus it takes to tattoo, plus sitting in one position that long? I do IT work and guaruntee there are many hours my company has paid me for not working for 15 mins of the hour. Something that you get to have for literally the rest of your life is going to be expensive and that's okay. That's my attitude at least. Anyhow... Great shop. I went for a walk in/cover up. Had a pretty bad tattoo I needed covered up. The artist (Eric) that took me was super kind and chill, the service was good and everyone was welcoming which is hard to find when it comes to tattoo shops. For $200 I would have wished my lines on the blade were a little more even but overall, he took me in as quick as he could, super nice, got the job done. I went to see Pete to get my fourth tattoo; a small piece on my foot. The shop is super clean, and everyone is super friendly. The art on the walls done by Damon is AMAZING. Pete came in, introduced himself and asked what I wanted to get done today. I showed him a picture, and told him the change I wanted made. I emailed him the picture, and LITERALLY within 5 minutes, he came out with a PERFECT piece. I could not have asked for anything different. He put the stencil on, and it was love at first sight! There are only three tattoo shops in Seattle that I would recommend and Supergenius is not only the first place that I would recommend, but it's also the shop that can claim the most hours put on my person. I've been in a tattoo shop or five and the thing I find to be the biggest turn off is how pretentious some artists can be, which happens more often than not. I've never felt that way at all at Supergenius. The staff is, quite frankly, some of the friendliest, if only slightly crass, people you'll ever meet. Another facet that I love about the people who work there is that they're honest. They'll let you know what will work in your favor, but not in a dismissive way; it's explained in a way where you feel like you can avoid one of those horrible "Here's a tattoo I regret" war stories. I've been going to Supergenius since 2004 and I really don't see myself going anywhere else. read more

Walked in with a very basic design. It was my first tattoo, so I was a bit uncomfortable, but the whole experience was great, non-judgmental, put me at ease the whole time. I didn't realize it was cash only so Thomas was patient as I went to the ATM and came back. Thomas was also super-detailed about cleanliness and sterilization, which I appreciated for my first experience as well. It's nice to feel like the details are taken care of, it avoids the awkward questions. I can't speak for the super-detailed artwork that some folks are looking for, but based on the artwork and talking to friends it seems like they can do it all, so I'd recommend them for just about anything. read more

Even though she knew this was just a small job, she was very accommodating and helpful when we were talking about what I wanted. She had to cancel my first appointment because of a scheduling issue with a previous appointment taking long, but that was fine since I had just a 15 minute tattoo. I just had my first tattoo completed by Thomas Graham at Super Genius, and I'm blown away by the results. Based on a basic description of what I wanted, and a copy of the poem that inspired my idea - Thomas created a drawing that not only perfectly captured my idea, but looked cooler than I imagined. The color is absolutely incredible, and so far everyone I've shown has been pretty blown away by the quality of the work and the originality of the piece. (It's a bluebird flying out of an anatomical heart). I'll definitely be seeing Thomas again for any additional work I have done. read more

For my first Tattoo Super Genius rocked! I was blessed to get my half sleeve from Chris Adams Aka Fat Chris. He (and I) valiantly were constantly going for five straight hours. I was exhausted and in extreme pain at the end but the results speak for themselves. They aren't the cheapest tat shop but they are among the best. I had a drawing done by a professional and took it to Chris and wanted it done exactly. But I didn't understand the essence of tattoo and pictures on paper don't always match up on skin. So let them work with you and give you ideas. Chris did a great job of taking my ideas and changing the design so it worked for me and the shape of my arm. If you are in the market for a tattoo don't skimp yourself due to monetary reasons. Don't put cheap art on your body. Super Genius is professional and awesome. Im really glad I went there. read more

Axi is AMAZING!!! As a tattoo virgin I was completely clueless, indecisive, not to mention scared as hell! She was so patient and accommodating with me through all if the emails and tweaks and changes, and is a huge sweetheart in person as well! She made me feel completely comfortable and much less nervous immediately. As for her work, she is insanely talented! Super clean lines, flawless shading and though she seems to prefer black and grey in her portfolio, she rocks with color choice and placement too! She does all this with a very gentle hand and made the 3 hour sitting as painless as possible for ink being injected into one's skin with a needle. Seconding the bad business practice reviews that I've seen on here. I've gotten two tattoos from SuperGenius- one with Matt and one multi-session piece with Chris. Matt's hourly is $125 but somehow he charged me $225 for a piece that took 45mins. Asked him about it and he said that it was because of the pre-work which is bullshit and included him eating his dinner. Legitimate prep work for my tattoo took about 20mins. Asked about it. He got flustered. I paid him. Womp womp. With Chris, you'll be paying for the tattoo time PLUS his smoke break time which comes out to about 20mins an hour. So if you have a "4 hour" session you end up paying a full hours worth of time that was not spent tattooing. Lame. Artistry is just ok but definitely not worth all that extra cash. Tattoo artists in Seattle are plentiful, get you one that charges fairly. read more

I was in town visiting a friend and she wanted to get her first tattoo with me. She contacted Tom and told her what we were looking to get done. She was super responsive and got us in for a next day appointment. Seeing SuperGenius Tattoo, it had really cool decor. It seemed like the layout could be updated a bit. Everyone seemed a bit on top of each other, including tattoo artist and the people getting their tattoos done. Overall, the atmosphere was fine. The receptionist let Tom know that we were there. Tom came up to clarify again what we were wanting to have done. She gave us the price of the tattoo and we paid the agreed upon price, which we thought was pretty reasonable. We confirmed and the receptionist had us sign paperwork and told us to wait. Tom was super friendly and held great conversations. She was very approachable and made us feel comfortable getting our tattoos done by her. My friend wanted to get a tattoo band around her arm, Tom had a great idea and used a rubber band to make sure it was straight when on her arm. Tom was pretty quick and did a great job on my friend's tattoo. It was clean and straight and my friend was super happy with her first tattoo. Tom said she was going to clean her station and set-up again for my turn. The design she did for me was beautiful, I wanted a rose stem on my ankle. She did a great job on straight fine lines and I was so happy with the result. I highly recommend Tom to do your next tattoo! read more

I look forward to my second visit to get color added! ***UPDATE*** Went in today to get my color added. Chris did a fantastic job with the color (I uploaded a photo - The Red Fairy). Even when several people came to speak with him, he never lost his focus. Someone even brought him food - and even though I asked him if he wanted a break to eat - he kept going! Also, he quoted me a price at the original sitting for the color and even though the time it took for the second sitting went well above that quote - he still didn't change the price! The tattoo is amazing- he even touched up the original tattoo that is above the fairy. It was 10 years old and faded/muddled up. It now looks amazing as well. I gave her an idea of the image I wanted, and she brought it to life. It is a simple tattoo, but beautifully done. First tattoo experience! Ceka did an amazing job let me first say. I was incredibly nervous but once she started I felt very relaxed with her and she made sure I was always comfortable. When I first came into the shop I chose her simply from her book in the front. We met and had a good talk about the botanical piece I was wanting. Showed her some pictures, outlined exactly where I wanted it, and scheduled an appointment for a month later. I came to my appointment excited to see what she had and feel in love with the sketch. She put her own twist on what I wanted and made it look so much more natural and flow a lot better. I have been a client at Super Genius Tattoo for over ten years and actually closer to fifteen years, How time flies. I am often reminded of the great work this shop produces, wether it's looking in the mirror at my art work or when I am constantly stopped by people that ask where I was tattooed at, and by who? That never gets old as it reminds me of the awesome memories I have spending time at their old location and the new spot that is only a few doors down and around the corner from the original shop. As for artists I have had many tattoos from the owner Damon Conklin (who is the original "Super Genius") and I have some work we are still working to finish. I have also been tattooed by many of the other artists that work their. If you are looking for a AWESOME piece of artwork that you get to keep for the rest of your life then stop on in and look at the shop and talk with any of the artists. I was supposed to have a tattoo done by an artist here since March (Emily), which she ended up last-second cancelling on me 3 times. The first time I was fine with, because she said she got sick with the stomach flu that morning and I understood that and wanted her to take care of herself. However, the second time, she said she supposedly injured her arm the previous day and didn't bother to notify me until an hour before my appointment (was on my way there). The third time, TEN MINUTES before my appointment and right when I was looking for parking in Seattle (and in which she finally confirmed she was still able to do for sure that very same morning), her CO-WORKER calls me saying she got sick and has to leave and even had the audacity to ask me yet for another reschedule. Finally had enough of the excuses and asked for a refund of my deposit. I personally think if such things came up, you should let your clients know much time in advance when you think you wouldn't be able to. These cancellations/rescheduling seemed a bit too suspiciously convenient time whenever my appointment time was coming up for her. Point is, she wasn't considerate or respectful at all for my time and continued to think it was fine to cancel on me at the last minute without giving me a warning. I'm usually the type to understand, but this was very unprofessional and rude of her to do, and I really hated the feeling of my time being wasted (not to mention my gas, because Seattle's an hour drive from my home). I don't know if I just had terrible luck with her, but I'd say to just be aware of poor/slow communication and constant rescheduling if you go to her...if you're lucky enough to even get to the actual tattoo part. read more

Blake Thomas Kennedy is scum. Even though traces had been made and agreed upon, and only two colors requested, BTK changed the design and color scheme when I was laid back. He took a break half way through the session to take rips of pot and I saw that he had changed everything. I of course was upset and expressed this. He took extreme offense and told me I needed to be okay with being his canvas and that I had no right to question his art. He told me if I wasn't satisfied I didn't have to pay. Blake, mad at me for not liking what he'd done so far did a terrible job on the second half of the tattoo, nowhere matching the skills shown in his portfolio. Of course, he was high already, and even later purchased mushrooms from a dealer who came into the shop. I didn't like his being inebriated when working on me, but he kept going out and smoking more insisting it would make his work stronger. He got so stoned that he slipped in an area at a point and instead of creatively fixing the patch just blacked the area out. At end, things could not have looked more different than what I asked for; he was even trying to add a background. I told him I didn't like the work and he insisted I pay, and in the end even got an extra $200 out of me because he considered the work to be over-time, thinking he deserved a large tip and somehow making me feel like the ass in this scenario- disturbing skill for manipulation. I was obviously a push-over with all of this, and the only good I can take from the experience is that I've toughened up. What really hit the hardest was when he told me to follow his social media so I could see the public's response to his work, not caring that me, who has it on my body didn't like the work. I did follow the page just to see, and of course only the strong side of the tattoo was shown; not the slop he did in second half. Amazingly, this guy Blake Thomas Kennedy had the nerve to speak poorly of me in his post, saying I was unappreciative and using other, stronger words. He asked me to follow so that he could further insult me when out of the room and unable to fight back. The man is scum Later I had issues with the tattoo not healing well, and Blake Thomas Kennedy would not respond to my emails, social media posts, or calls to the shop. The man has no care for his clients. I still have pain in the tattoo and have been told the artist was working too deeply on sensitive nerves and potentially permanently damaged them. read more

I was tattooed by Damon and couldn't be happier with the results. The shop was fun, the music was great, and the artwork is top notch.

I've had a bunch of work done here by jason vogt, and it's always been a great experience. Definitely a shop I'll revisit. No weird attitudes to deal with, clean, and lots of interesting art to check out. Not to mention how many super skilled artists they have read more
