Cucumber salad, Xiao Long bao, panfried pork and chives dumplings, shrimp and pork wonton in chilli oil.
    Anh H.

Fresh handmade dumplings made to order with perfectly balanced sauces. Had a craving for a mid afternoon snack and this place check all the boxes. Service was quick and easy. Server was attentive, very clean contemporary vibe. The standouts are traditional Xiao Long bao that was so juicy and the skin was not too thick. Pan fried dumplings with chives were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. The cucumber salad is refreshing and complimented the dumplings well. Will return soon for some spicy beef noodle soup.

Where do I start? Service was great, food was incredible, had a great time here! The cucumber salad was 10/10, as were the spicy pork dumplings. Can't forget the pork xiao long bao, it was also 10/10!

Came here with a few friends on a Saturday morning. They were not too busy so we got a table immediately. After reviewing the menu, we ordered: - XLB (8pc) 13.95: The wrapping was a bit dry on a few of them but they were tasty on the whole - shrimp and pork wontons in chili oil (8pc) 14.95: These were my favorite. I liked the flavor of the chili oil and used it for the other dumplings as well. - Pan fried pork and chive dumpling (8pc) 13.95: The texture of these are really nice. - Steamed pork and chive dumpling (8pc) 12.95: I enjoyed these as well. Overall, this is a solid dumpling spot. They are in a lot that has a lot of parking, the tables are well spaced, and service is just fine. When in the mood for dumplings, I will definitely come back.

Good xlb soup dumplings and chive shrimp dumplings. Inside with quality ingredients, yes you can find shrimp in their dumplings, Authentic Chinese flavor profile. Shall return

Came back to the restaurant as my friends mentioned that their other dishes were worth a try. Decided to give the restaurant another try to see if it was as good as they said it was. We ordered the beef stir fried udon, mapo tofu, eggplant dish, pan fried dumplings and cucumber dish. The food was as good or better than they said it was. The mapo tofu was the highlight of the dinner. The heat was good and the numbness from the pepper corns was apparent. It was a delicious dish to have. The pan fried dumplings were more juicy than the soup dumplings I had at my first visit and would definitely recommend that over the soup dumplings. The service was good as they would occasionally check up on us to make sure nothing else was needed. The relaxed atmosphere made it more welcoming. Overall it was a vastly different experience than the first time I was here.

I'm always down for some soup dumplings and wanted to try this place out. It's got a big parking lot so makes it an easy trip. We ordered the string beans, stir fried eggplant with garlic sauce, pan fried dumplings, and an assortment of xiaolong baos. The non dumpling dishes were too salty in my opinion. The xiaolong baos were solid. I liked that the skin was thin and didn't break/leak. There could have been more soup but overall I'm satisfied. We got the assortment of colorful different kinds. Our favorite was the crab one.

Easy to find parking, the restaurant had plenty of tables without feeling too crowded. Service was fast when we ordered with staff. We ordered xlb, beef noodle soup, chive and pork pan fried dumplings and fried lotus slices. The food was pretty good. Xlb skin wasn't the thinnest but not super thick either. Beef noodle soup was decent- the noodles were thin (not the handpulled type) but springy. We ended up getting the ube dessert dumplings which were a bit disappointing. The filling tasted more like taro than ube, and the skin was quite thick and dry. I would come again but stick to only the savory menu.

I'm looking for a DTF dooope and this place seemed to fit the bill! Was super hungry so ordered a good amount of food. Order came out pretty quick! 1. Popcorn chicken - 5/5 it's fried perfectly and most importantly it's also well seasoned! 2. Pan fried gyoza - 4/5. A lot of other places tasted just average. Probably something you can get at the frozen dumpling section, but nope here there's actually a difference! The filling you can tell it's made with fresh and good ingredients. Tasty and juicy! 3. Pork XLB - 3.5/5. Although the filling tasted good it was lacking the soup! That is the essence of XLB. Hence the low score. 4. Shanghai Stir Fried Rice Cakes. 4/5 the key part is the wok hay. It's definitely cooked with some fire! Not too salty and rice cakes had a good bounce.

    Signature XLB $19.95

We had a family lunch here some weeks ago. The location is well lit and has good air conditioning. Service was attentive (you can order from a QR code or have one of the staff take orders on their ipad). Ordering from staff was helpful as we could as for their suggestions and thoughts on certain dishes. Sis got there early as she just HAD to have the table with the electrical train-like lazy susan. Imagine the slowest kid-train at Disney slowly chugging along trying to catch up to the next slow train caboose in front. It actually drove all of us mad after awhile as the movement was SO SLOW that I jokingly asked one of the staff if they can speak it up (which they could with a remote control! - too cute). We tried: Cold cucumbers : - alot of vinegar dressing which made the veggie a bit soggy Seaweed salad: - tasted heavily of vinegar and sugar Garlic fried chicken wings ($12.95) - served piping hot and fresh. The batter was thicker but provided a nice crunch. Some pieces tasted overly fried. Expensive for six pieces. Signature XLB $19.95: - staff suggested this so we could sample 8 of their house made XLB. I thought it was expensive at $2.50/xlb . We all tried one but weren't blown away (and yes, we were comparing alot of the dishes to Din Tai Fung). The XLB was thicker and there wasn't much soup in the dumpling. Stir Fried mixed veggies: - I loved this dish. The lotus root and snow peas were delicious. There was a lot of white pepper which we really liked. Sauteed Green Beans : - you must have to love fermented black beans to order this dish. It was too much as you couldn't taste the green beans (if they were fresh or crisp, etc) Honey Walnut Shrimp : - 100% yummmm. This was my favorite dish ! The shrimp was so plump and amazing. The mayo glaze had a nice light sweetness to it. Would absolutely return for this dish alone. Dumplings : - I don't know which one we ordered and if it was steamed/boiled. Family seemed to enjoy Shrimp with Japanese Tofu $19.95 - the tofu was the best part as it was soft and silken. The shrimp wasn't good (especially compared to the Honey Walnut). Pork XLB $12.95: - eight pieces. Thicker dumpling skin and not much soup Eggplant w/ garlic sauce: - we appreciated how quickly they bring dishes to table as this one was blistering hot . Eggplant was nicely cooked Chocolate XLB $10.95: - this is their version of DTF's mochi chocolate XLB. Unfortunately, the chocolate tasted like Hershey's semi sweet. The skin was just too thick and gummy for us. Taro XLB : - two others at table said this was better then the chocolate Piggy Bun $10.95 - yes we shamefully ordered these because of the art work on buns. The four pieces were very cute. The 'creamy custard' wasn't creamy at all - maybe they steamed them too long? Overall, it was a nice family meal . The prices are high. It's hard not compare the dishes to Din Tai Fung so try to come with a different mind set so you won't be disappointed. I'd return to try more items on their menu.

I used to live in Carmel Creek and visited this shopping center all the time. So when I found out that there's a new dumpling restaurant here during my work trip in San Diego, I had to give it a try! Given that I was a party of 1, I had to go for the multi-color xiao long bao sampler. It was interesting to learn how they dyed all the colors of the dumpling skins. The light blue was particularly eye catching, and apparently that color was brought about using red cabbage? Anyway, all the XLB tasted good to me! My favorites were the orange crab & roe and the red spicy. My least favorite was probably the brown kbbq one. The flavors just didn't compliment well. I will say that the price for these 8 soup dumplings were quite hefty: $20. And that's not just because of the novelty. Even if you get 8 piece of a single flavor, most of them are in the $18+ range. I also got the BBQ pork buns which had a very appealing presentation. Luckily the taste matched the aesthetics! All in all, I was quite content with my meal. I recognize I only tried a couple of the items, so I'll have to try some other offerings next time I'm down in SD. Hopefully they can also work on more competitive pricing.

What a fun time we had with our local friends at Super Dumpling while visiting San Diego! A Sunday lunch, the restaurant was busy but not packed. This is a bright modern simple restaurant. Our server placed the order from her tablet instead of us using the QR code which likely saved us a lot of time. We all had water and intended to start with dumplings then progress through soup and entrees. But Asian kitchens are fast so it all came out in a jumbled order. The only way to avoid this would be to order only the course you want next. Although our table for four was overcrowded with all the dishes we ordered, it was a fantastic meal. First out were the the signature dumplings. Our friends ordered a sampler of multicolored soup dumplings, and my husband ordered the crab and shrimp dumplings. They raved about the gushy soup and the tasty centers. Each dumpling variety has a different color so you know which one without opening it. Being gluten and pork free I abstained. But it was a very short wait for entrees (and then soup after), and so I dug in. First was the beef chow fun. I believe this rich brown dish with firm long rice noodles was the best seasoned chow fun I have ever eaten. We devoured it, everyone sampling the tender beef and hearty dark sauce-coated noodles. While eating this, the sauteed string beans (add chicken $3) came out... and it too was one of the best seasoned orders of sauteed green beans that I have ever tasted. And the added chicken was a very generous portion for the up charge, bravo! The soup course made its way to the table, and we had chosen Hot and Sour. This soup was good, but felt lacking to me. I used the nice variety of condiments on the table to make it more hot and more sour (chili and rice vinegar). Then I loved it! Big chunks of tofu, some chicken, plenty of fungi and bamboo shoots. We would probably have had leftovers but the guys had another cup each. To avoid the separate charge for plain white steamed rice, we ordered the shrimp fried rice entree. It was probably the weakest dish on the table, a yellow rice with plentiful shrimp and a few veggies. The shrimp were plump but not cooked as firm as I would prefer. The flavor of this dish was completely absent. And why is it yellow? The servers checked on us periodically and took care of payment, but they are very busy and brief in conversation at the table. The food here speaks for itself! Anyway, I don't know the total bill because our generous friends picked up the whole tab. So we headed next door for some chocolate and I bought dessert, the least I could do.

Food: shrimp & pork wonton (7/10) - big, juicy, flavorful. not a lot of chili oil but i added more from the table walnut shrimp (10/10) - very creamy, big, love the caramelized walnuts, good portion custard bun (8/10) - fluffy bun, cute presentation, sweet custard filling but overall isn't too sweet which i love signature xiao long bao (7/10) - fun trying 8 different flavors and 8 different colors. they were all decent but i wish they were a bit more soupy. loved pairing the soup dumplings with chili oil or white vinegar beef chow fun (8/10) - loved the stir-fry charred taste on the wide rice noodles. the beef was a bit salty. really good portion for sharing. overall loved the flavorful dish black pepper beef udon (7.5/10) - very unique flavor that i personally couldn't love too much but my mom loved it! love the portion and i love udon noodles. it's very unique to me because of the flavor. it was made well. Service: Nothing too personal or conversational. Very straightforward! The ordering takes place on a QR at your table and you can also tap when you want to pay! Water is also placed at your table to refill so there isn't much needed interaction with staff. Ambiance: Love the environment and decorated with Chinese decor. It's very clean, bright, and spacious inside!

The restaurant is located in what looks to be a pretty new shopping center. There was plenty of easy parking available which was very pleasant and an advantage over Convoy and Din Tai Fung at UTC. Arrived as a party of 2 on a Friday around 6:40pm. Signed into the Yelp waitlist in the restaurant. It predicted the wait would be 8 to 20 minutes. It ended up being 33 minutes but it was fine. While waiting, I used their clean women-designated single person bathroom, then hung out with my son outside. There was lots of seating outside, including by a beautiful fountain in the plaza. Once seated, we enjoyed having a large pitcher of water to self serve. We ordered quickly via a QR code provided at the table. I saw others order through a server, but I figured via QR code might be easier. The food arrived gradually. First the pan fried dumplings, then the steamed dumplings, then the vegetable chow mein, and then the XLB. I liked the staggered serving of the dishes we ordered. I also liked how the sauces were delivered in tiny dishes with the dumplings. At other places they give you ingredients to create your own but the issues with that are that I might do a terrible job creating my own concoction and I don't really want to touch sticky sauce containers others have used extensively. All the food was great. I might prefer the food at Din Tai Fung more but this was very good and I thought pricing was reasonable. Service at DTF is definitely better, but it was friendly enough here. It felt a bit impersonal given the QR code ordering. I did have to ask for a fork for my son which we got quickly. I didn't get a soup spoon for my XLB which I thought was weird but I didn't bother asking for one. I got 2 to-go boxes and I scraped the leftovers in myself and put them in the to-go plastic bag they gave me. I tried to pay via the QR code but that functionality wasn't built in, so I had to get a server to help me pay. One thing that was confusing that I didn't notice till I got home was the $1 convenience fee I was charged. Not sure what that was for. The QR code ordering, the to-go boxes and plastic bag...? If it was for the QR code ordering, I think that is weird because it's actually more convenient to the servers and restaurant operations. All in all, a strong experience and conveniently located right off of the 56. I would definitely go again and maybe get on the Yelp waitlist in advance next time.

Shan Xi Magic Kitchen has been on my Yelp Want To Go list ever since my brother and SIL told me…read morethat they really enjoyed a Chinese restaurant in Las Vegas and were told that a similar restaurant existed in San Diego. After their experience in Vegas, they tried Shan Xi themselves and glowingly talked about the delish food there. Today, 3/4s of my fam ate here and we definitely concurred with my brother and SIL's favorable assessment. 4.5 stars because their grub was amazing, but it could be more customer friendly where one of the staff checks to see if we need help ordering instead of ordering from the QR code menu. Shan Xi Magic Kitchen is located in the ultra competitive Convoy Asian District specifically on Convoy Street within the Convoy Village shopping center. The restaurant is next to our fave Asian drink place called Yun Tea, it's next to Olleh KBBQ, next door to Szechuan Chef, and a short walk to BB.Q Chicken. This is a popular strip mall, so it could be challenging for you to find parking. Parking is free for 90 minutes, but you'll have to pay after that time ends. Shan Xi is nice inside with gray brick on their walls, decorative lighting surrounded by rattan, Chinese dolls on a shelf, Chinese inspired figurine art on another wall, and a beautiful curio/screen containing Chinese knick knacks. Seating consists of tables/chairs and a long leather bench. Our servers were friendly, but to me having to order from a QR code is impersonal. I'd rather talk to a person, so that I can ask what they recommend. Plus, if diners aren't familiar with this type of cuisine, I'm sure they would have a bunch of questions. From Shan Xi Magic Kitchen's website, "Bringing the bold flavors of Northwest China to San Diego, Shan'xi Magic Kitchen serves authentic regional specialties. Our restaurants specialize in hand-pulled noodles, savory bread-based dishes, and traditional Chinese comfort food prepared with time-honored techniques." After being told that Shan Xi was similar to their positive dining experience at a different Chinese restaurant in Vegas, my brother and SIL tried Shan Xi and they were impressed by what they ate here and told us that we needed to eat here ourselves. Since my wife and I were off midweek, we invited our son to join us for lunch. We ordered the following dishes and feel free to mimick what we ordered: spicy cumin lamb burger, hand pulled noodle with cumin beef, beef magic fried rice, dry fried green beans, and a side of white rice. My brother and SIL love the lamb burger as a appetizer and we really thought it was tasty too. If you're not a spicy fan, this might not be for you, but the lamb was tender. The pita bread needed to be softer. Their hand pulled noodle with cumin beef was stellar, chewy, and delectable. Loved their beef magic fried rice and it ate really well by itself. The fried green beans were addicting, garlicky, and just yummy. I'm a fan Shan Ci and can't wait to try their other entrees. My brother and SIL were spot on with their positive reviews about Shan Xi Magic Kitchen. It was a blessing to have a spontaneous meet up with 3/4s of my fam and grub on some memorable Chinese food.

Shan Xi Magic Kitchen has Good Potential, But Missing Some of the "Magic". 徒有其表,未得其神…read more My wife and I came here tonight for a date night, and overall, I'd say Shan Xi Magic Kitchen has a lot of potential, but the food still feels like it is missing some of the finer touches that would make it truly memorable. First, some positives: the staff were very courteous, attentive, and eager to help. The restaurant was completely full when we arrived, and there was a party of 12 ahead of us, but the staff communicated the seating situation clearly. Despite the restaurant being packed, my wife and I were seated right away, which I appreciated. We ordered: * Two bowls of cumin lamb hand-pulled noodles * Stir-fried string beans * Shrimp fried rice The hand-pulled noodles had a good chew and satisfying texture, which is important. The cumin and spice were also prominent. However, my bowl had noticeably more grease sitting at the bottom than my wife's, and the flavor didn't really build as I ate. After the initial cumin and spice, it eventually became mostly just spicy rather than developing more layers of flavor. The shrimp fried rice was probably where I noticed the biggest difference. It seemed to use relatively fresh rice rather than day-old rice, which isn't inherently bad, but the grains didn't have that ideal 「粒粒分明」 texture you normally look for in good fried rice. The rice was more starchy and tended to clump together, and the overall flavor wasn't particularly 鮮 or savory. The stir-fried string beans were enjoyable, but I felt they were missing that strong 鍋氣 you get from proper high-heat wok cooking. They were cooked, but they didn't have that slightly charred, smoky, caramelized quality that makes stir-fried vegetables really stand out. One interesting observation: the clientele tonight was predominantly younger and English-speaking. That's obviously not a measure of food quality, but when I'm looking for particularly authentic Chinese food, I often notice that the restaurants packed with mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, or other Asian diners tend to have a certain extra level of authenticity behind the food. Shan Xi Magic Kitchen definitely looks and feels like an authentic Chinese restaurant, but some of the food tonight left me feeling 「形似神不似」or it has the appearance, but not quite the soul. And that's ultimately how I felt about this visit. Compared with what I remember from visiting over a year ago, I think the restaurant has a high ceiling, but it consistently misses a few of the right notes. The food isn't bad in fact, there are several things here that I genuinely enjoyed but it doesn't quite reach the level where I finish a dish thinking, "Wow, I need to come back specifically for this." They may have around 2,000 reviews, and I can understand why people enjoy the restaurant. But having had quite a bit of Chinese food in LA, I've personally had better versions of these dishes there. Overall: good service, good atmosphere, solid potential, and enjoyable food but the execution needs a little more refinement before it becomes truly memorable.

I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience at Tasty Malatang Chinese Cuisine was…read moredisappointing because of the customer service. According to the restaurant's posted hours, they close at 10:00 PM. My family and I arrived around 9:15 PM, expecting that we still had enough time to order dinner. As soon as we walked in, the server immediately told us they were already closed. My mother politely pointed out that the posted closing time was 10:00 PM and simply asked if the kitchen happened to close earlier than the dining room. Instead of explaining the situation professionally, the server responded in a very rude tone: "Well, you guys can eat and order, but at 10:00 PM you need to be gone and out the door." Another employee then stepped in to back him up, making the interaction feel even more uncomfortable. I completely understand how the restaurant business works. I've been around the industry long enough to know that kitchens often stop taking orders before closing or that staff are trying to finish cleaning at the end of the night. If they had simply said, "We're sorry, but our kitchen is already closed," or even, "We can still serve you, but we're finishing up for the night," we would have completely understood. There was no reason to speak to us disrespectfully. What made this experience frustrating is that we never came in with an attitude or demanded special treatment. We were polite from the moment we walked through the door. We simply asked a reasonable question based on the restaurant's posted business hours, and instead of receiving a courteous explanation, we were met with unnecessary hostility. Customer service is just as important as the food. A welcoming attitude can make guests want to return, while a rude interaction can overshadow everything else. Unfortunately, this experience left such a negative impression that I won't be returning. I also would not feel comfortable bringing my family or recommending this restaurant to friends because everyone deserves to be treated with basic respect. I hope management takes this review as constructive feedback and reminds their staff that even when it's close to closing time, a little kindness and professionalism go a long way.

I'm summing the hype of the reviews to be mainly due to the ambiance of the restaurant and not so much about the food. Or maybe, this location is the best Chinese food in the area...I'm just not sure. I have to admit the ambiance is nice and photo worthy but, I need the food to hit just as hard if the ratings are going to be upwards of 4 stars and it just didn't for me! WARNING: This is a very small restaurant! Reservations are HIGHLY recommended! They do offer indoor and sidewalk dining but, it is very limited in space. We ordered: Szechuan green beans - green bean were ok Honey walnut shrimp - this was the best thing on the table as it was not too overly dressed with sauce and shrimp was nice and crispy FS fried rice - different taste with the garlic butter but, in a good way Shrimp and pork dumplings - I didn't care for the sauce and dumplings themselves lacked in flavor Crab rangoon - NOT A FAN of the flavor! I think they use real crab meat and it was just more on the fishy smelling and tasting side. Char siu ribs - enough to feed 4 people but, they appeared well dressed in sauce but, still lacked in flavor Golden fried custard - NOT A FAN! Custard was weird, needed more of the lychee sauce for it to have ANY taste at all. If you are looking for authentic tasting Chinese food, in my opinion...this location is NOT IT. Everyone's palette is different though...SO DO YOU!

TL;DR It's really good. Go here…read more -------------- I came here after a friend recommended it when I told them I was coming down to San Diego for a day trip during my spring break from school in Orange County. I was born and raised in LA, so I've had a lot of Chinese food growing up, and I wasn't expecting to be this surprised--but I really was. I ordered the black bean eggplant and the salt and pepper chicken wings. The wings are what they're known for, but I have to start with the eggplant because it completely caught me off guard. It wasn't mushy at all--crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked on the inside, and coated in sauce without losing its texture. Every bite had depth and balance, not just saltiness. I actually meant to start with the wings, but the eggplant was so good I ended up eating half of it before even getting to them. By that point I was already getting full, but I still made sure to finish the wings--and I'm honestly excited to take the rest of the eggplant home as leftovers. By the time I got to the wings, I understood why they're popular--crispy, flavorful, and super satisfying--but what stood out to me was how both dishes complemented each other. One rich and layered, the other crisp and bright. I never got tired of eating, which honestly says a lot. I even told the staff how much I enjoyed the food and they thought I was joking, but I meant every word in saying I thought it was comparable, if not better then the food I've had in Chinatown in LA. Really glad I came here and the next time I have a chance to come back down to SD I definitely will come back here and that's not negotiable for me

It was empty coming in around 5:30pm on a Friday, but it soon filled to capacity in the next hour. So coming into it, we thought we would choose between Menu A and Menu B. Afterwards, we thought it was AYCE on the menu of your choice + the side buffet where there are limited selections of sides and refrigerated drinks. We ordered orange chicken, Chinese style fish and something else. Again, this was on the thought that we could order more than one item on our selected menu. So imagine our surprise when the bill was nearly $100 for two people? It was a misunderstanding. However, the initial staff gentlemen was completely rude about it and ignored us as we sought to understand. Finally, a second female server came and heard our concerns regarding the false advertisement and unclear messaging. She was able to provide us the price we thought this was for based on Menu selection. All in all - I don't recommend the AYCE option. I think it would be important to make a distinction that AYCE clearly on the menu and at the front - AYCE means each individual selects ONE entree (which is a one small portion) and the AYCE component of the deal is ONLY for the side buffet.

The menu said the family meals were meant for parties of 8, but let me tell you. We ate until we were hurting and there was still a ton of leftovers. Those meals can easily serve a dozen people in my opinion which makes them even more of a great deal. If you've got a large party, this is a fantastic option to make sure everyone eats their fill. With that said, all the food was delicious. Hot and fresh from the kitchen, each dish with its own unique flavor and textures. We ran the gamut of flavors over our meal and it's hard to really point to one singular dish that was my favorite. After having almost 10 different dishes, I can confidently say that they will have something you will really enjoy. The restaurant itself is a bit no frills. But that's fine. They're putting their time in to food, not ambiance and I am totally down with that. Service is great. We were in a back corner, but we never felt ignored nor overly watched over. We were able to sit down and enjoy our meal at our own speed. My only 'gripe' with the restaurant is that the restroom is actually outside and shared with the other businesses in the complex. And that bathroom isn't the best maintained. I'm assuming that's up to the property management and not the restaurant (or other businesses) so I'm not dinging my review, but just keep that in mind. Might be best to try & hold it if you can. Ultimately, Golden Chopsticks really knocked it out of the park and caught me so off guard. I am so glad we came here on a bit of a whim.
