11-25-25 All the dishes below were yummy delicious! We especially enjoyed intestine dish and century eggs. As far as the rice, it was slightly undercooked. Ordered: -Deep-fried Chicken with Crispy Chili $17.75 -Dry Pot Pork Intestine with Wild Chili $18.75 -Mashed Eggplant & Green Chili Pepper with Century Egg $16.75 -Rice Large Bowl $6.50 Funny incident happened, I paid the bill with a credit card excluding tip. A minute later, the waiter walked over and asked for tip. I mentioned to him that I was going to leave it on the table. He stood still, refused to leave our table and waited for me to give him the tip. So strange! 3 star rating due to the strange interactions Lol

Pretty authentic Hunan Chinese Cuisine!! Each dish is super flavorful and spicy. My favorite is the beef brisket, it's a cold meat dish. The meat was super tender, fall apart, and drenched in spices. The intestine was surprisingly great and flavorful, comes out in the dry pot and stays hot the whole meal. Century egg and eggplant is a must try if you've never had this dish before. Tofu dish was my least favorite but just from personal preference. Pork tasted like bacon. Overall, great food, great place. Did have to wait 15-20 min to get seated and waitlist got long after us, even on a Monday night. Servers were pretty busy so it was hard to get their attention when one of our dishes didn't come out. Very homey, traditional Chinese restaurant in US vibes that I would go to growing up. Definitely will come back!

Decent Chinese spot if you want some spicy food! With a group of 9, we went kind of early and got seated at their bigger tables. The workers were so kind and brought out everything for us so quickly. The food came all at once and came out quick. Family style got us so full and satisfied. I don't gravitate towards Chinese food from regions known for spicy dishes but I'll definitely say it was spicy for me. Overall not disappointed but would only come back if my friends wanted to.

This is a Hunan style restaurant featuring a list of very regional specialty dishes. We ordered two dishes from this restaurant: pork kidney stir fried with yellow larynx, and picked vegetables fish soup. The first stir fried dish is solid. The thin sliced pork kidney and yellow larynx are soaked in flavors and stir fried at a sufficient level to remain crunchy. The fish on the other hand, is coated with too much flour and therefore lacks texture you would expect from freshly sliced fish. We only stopped by in a roadtrip but the menu definitely has other rare treat such as yellow eel that deserves more visits.

Authentic stinky tofu. The sauce is very salty. Ordered extra spicy for to go because I didn't want to stink up the restaurant. But the sauce was mild.

Nothing says comfort food better than smashing together roasted eggplant, peppers and a century egg in a clay pot. Work that down with rice and a side of greens for a well rounded meal. Both dishes were well seasoned and absolutely delicious. Service is prompt and the restaurant gets busy - ordering is via a QR code.

Expensive place. Did not fit our $50 date budget and we did not even order the expensive items in their menu. Although we ordered some of the popular dishes like the mashed eggplant, grandmas braised pork and cumin rib. No distinct flavor and the salt is very overpowering on all the 3 dishes we ordered. Maybe the more expensive dishes would taste better. But based on these 3 which cost around $75, we are giving this 2 stars for food and 3 stars for service and ambience.

I went here on a friend's recommendation saying this is one of the best Sichuan restaurants in the San Diego area. My friend and I went here for a Monday lunch to try it out. We ordered the cumin lamb, deep fried chicken with crispy chili, and stir-fried string beans. Food overall is good but could be better. The cumin lamb was my favorite dish and it is served in toothpicks, so you can just grab the toothpick and eat it. It is well spiced and has a bit of spiciness to it, but I expected it to be a lot more spicy as it was barely mild (maybe they're catering to the western audience more?) The deep fried chicken was not as flavorful and spicy as I hoped, even though there is ginger, garlic, etc tossed in. The stir-fried string beans were pretty solid, just the minced pork is on the saltier side. Service is okay as to be expected for these kinds of restaurants. We wanted to Yelp check in for a free non alcoholic beverage but the waitress denied the offer, mentioning this offer was only valid a few years ago. In that case, why don't they just remove it altogether?

Really yummy and authentic! Servers aren't super helpful and they speak mostly Chinese but the food is genuinely delicious!!

The portions are big and the food is delicious. They cook their pork dishes really well. The pork is bouncy and firm yet tender at the same time. No porky smell. They cook the best Chinese cauliflower stir fry. Service is fine and not slow.

Authentic Hunan food. Very good, I got the beef with pickled wild chili one time and another beef dish another time and both times were amazing. Full with Chinese eaters this place is awesome and deserves a higher rating.

They've just introduced several exciting new items! One is the Hunan-style swamp eel, and the other is baby lotus. Both dishes are new to me and absolutely delicious. I've been a fan of this restaurant for a long time, and it never fails to impress. It remains one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in San Diego, known for its authentic flavors and excellent preparation. Although it can get quite busy in the evenings and on weekends, it's worth finding the right time to enjoy a truly exceptional Chinese meal. The restaurant is clean and inviting, with comfortable seating. Highly recommended!

    Stewed spicy duck blood
    Natalie Z.

Village Kitchen gets a 5/5 for winning over my picky Chinese mom. She usually prefers Cantonese cuisine (we always go to Noble Chef) and will stick to the same 5-6 rotation of dishes. Today I picked VK since I've had good dining experiences here (though admittedly pre-pandemic) and she begrudgingly complied. This place primarily serves Hunanese cuisine, which is known for being spicy and heavy on the salt. I was nervous that she'd hate it and would hem and haw the entire time, but we had an awesome meal together. We ordered: The duck blood, pig intestine soup, noodles, stinky black tofu, and the smashed eggplant with century egg. Everything was a hit, especially the eggplant, which is crispy and wok-fried with tons of jalapeno and then smashed together with century eggs in a literal mortar and pestle. The duck blood was delicate and cooked in a semi-spicy chili-scallion sauce; I was pleasantly surprised at how big of a portion it was (duck blood ain't cheap). The stinky tofu was great but the listing on the menu was somewhat misleading as I thought it would be some sort of stew. Still good. Intestine soup had a non-spicy option and had a rich broth with lots of meat. I think the only miss of the night was the noodles, which were haphazardly seasoned with a small amount of chili oil, cilantro, and some peanuts. We ended up mixing some of the leftover condiments into it, making it a lot more flavorful. The total came out to be ~$85 for 4 people, which was pretty reasonable.

Beef noodle soup - excellent flavor overall, including a strong broth and a nice, soft texture to the noodles. This is certainly not their specialty, and asking for extra cumin to sprinkle on the lamb did not redeem the firmness. I struggled to slide the meat off the skewer and ended up just eating it while still on the stick. 1.5/5 Fish fillet - so good. Easy to eat texture-wise. Caution -- a bit saltier than it looks. The bell peppers in particular were seasoned spectacularly. 4.5/5 Dry fried green beans - a delicious option for vegetables to add to the table. Most people will enjoy this one in my opinion. A bit more crunch than I expected, which is not a bad thing. 4/5 Double cooked pork - I've never seen it cooked this way, and am not a fan. I'm used to a more oily version of this dish. It contained a bunch of dried and crunchy... yams? Potatoes? Overall, the dish was mainly crunch with no flavor, and contained a relatively small amount of pork. 1/5

The spot itself is Retro Chinese-American aesthetic with a modern twist. Think red lighting, plants, and a playlist that keeps the energy up. It's one of those spots that feels trendy but still approachable--good for dates or catching up with friends. FOOD / DRINKS Mayo Walnut Shrimp (Recommend) This is one of their standout dishes--and for good reason. Crispy shrimp coated in that creamy, slightly sweet sauce with candied walnuts. It hits that crunchy + rich + sweet combo really well and is easily one of the safer bets on the menu. Green Beans (Recommend) Simple but solid. Good balance to the heavier shrimp--fresh, slightly savory/umami making it a nice side to round things out. Ginger Lemonade (Recommend) A refreshing sip with a nice bite of ginger. SERVICE Friendly and efficient, especially considering how busy it gets. Food comes out fairly quick once you're seated. TL;DR OVERALL 4 stars. Steady prices, good food, and good choices. Fun spot with strong vibes and solid Chinese-American comfort food. It leans more elevated takeout-style than traditional, but that's kind of the appeal. The courteous waitress guided us to our table and brought the menu and water right away. For this visit, we ordered the following dishes: West Lake Minced Beef Soup: The portion was large enough for 6 people. The lightly starched broth was nicely seasoned with hint of white pepper. In the soup, there were bits of minced beef, chopped green onion, and stirred egg whites. The simplistic soup was warm, velvety, and pleasantly flavored. 3 Item BBQ Combo (House Special Chicken, Roasted Duck, and Pork Belly): The house special chicken was nicely steamed, lightly seasoned, and with beautiful gelatinous skin. The roasted duck pieces were plump, with crispy skin and succulent meat. The pork belly had crispy thick skin, and tender meat with nice rendered fat without being overly greasy. Walnut Shrimp: The portion was quite generous for the price. The lightly battered shrimps had a nice firm texture and were covered with mayonnaise and sprinkled with sweetened and crispy walnuts. What a beautiful blend of taste and aroma. Left the restaurant heart-warmed and extremely satisfied. Highly recommended.

I was born and raised in LA, so I've had a lot of Chinese food growing up, and I wasn't expecting to be this surprised--but I really was. I ordered the black bean eggplant and the salt and pepper chicken wings. The wings are what they're known for, but I have to start with the eggplant because it completely caught me off guard. It wasn't mushy at all--crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked on the inside, and coated in sauce without losing its texture. Every bite had depth and balance, not just saltiness. I actually meant to start with the wings, but the eggplant was so good I ended up eating half of it before even getting to them. By that point I was already getting full, but I still made sure to finish the wings--and I'm honestly excited to take the rest of the eggplant home as leftovers. By the time I got to the wings, I understood why they're popular--crispy, flavorful, and super satisfying--but what stood out to me was how both dishes complemented each other. One rich and layered, the other crisp and bright. I never got tired of eating, which honestly says a lot. I even told the staff how much I enjoyed the food and they thought I was joking, but I meant every word in saying I thought it was comparable, if not better then the food I've had in Chinatown in LA. Really glad I came here and the next time I have a chance to come back down to SD I definitely will come back here and that's not negotiable for me

The green onion pancake was crispy and golden on the outside with flaky, layered bites. The sweet corn with chili dumplings had that perfect balance- slightly sweet, a little heat, and super juicy filling. The green pepper with corn dumplings had a light crunch and savory flavor. The standout for me was the Beijing zhajiang noodles. That was probably my favorite. Noodles were perfection. The owner was kind. You can tell it's a family-run spot, especially with the sweetest little girl helping out, which made the whole experience feel even more genuine and homey. We were seated in about 20 minutes, which honestly isn't bad at all. Free parking lot. Will be back soon.

So there is a line that lines up quickly and hopefully hopefully you get a seat. I don't think the biggest table can be more than four people. There's also a kiosk where you can order to go. The food was good but nothing solid out to us, I could taste the freshness in the dumplings but maybe because they're boiled, they were a bit bland to us. Definitely needed the sauce with it. Maybe we will be back to try something different. Overall 3/5 for the dishes we ordered that evening
