I've been coming to this place since I first moved here over a decade ago. The owners changed a few year ago. Sweet: even though ownership changed they still have the same servers that remember us even though we don't come as much as we used to. The menu for the most part is still the same. They still offer our favorite items such as the salty pork, honey walnut shrimp, chow Mein, house fried rice and wonton egg noodle soup. The restaurant has since new ownership is much cleaner inside. You can either make it family style or have one entree for yourself. One entree is plentiful for one person. Sour: our most recent experience there were some slight changes like the texture and taste of the salty pork. It seemed like it was cooked healthier as it wasn't nice and crispy as usual. The size of the dishes are still the same more on the small size but higher cost. The food is not quite the same as it used to be but it is still pretty good. A nostalgic spot that I had to revisit now that I have adult money and real cravings. Minh Ky Restaurant is one of those places I remember going to as a kid, even though we lived 25 minutes away at the time, so you already know it had to be worth it. A lot of reviews rave about their duck, so I came back specifically to try it. The parking lot is honestly a nightmare. People are sitting on hazards everywhere because there's barely any space. It's tight, confusing to navigate, and street parking is basically full. The surrounding plazas are covered in tow-away signs too, so just be prepared. Once we finally parked and walked in, the restaurant was pretty empty with only one other table. We were greeted and seated right away. The menu has a few specials and a mix of Vietnamese-Chinese dishes like noodle soups, rice plates, and stir fry items. We decided to split the bo luc lac and a 1/4 roast duck. At the table, you get fully set up with sauces and condiments like sriracha, hoisin, jalapenos, salt, sugar, pepper, soy sauce, and vinegar. Our food came out pretty quickly, but the second the duck hit the table, my husband and I just looked at each other. It was clearly over-roasted, almost burnt. The plate was also extremely hot which made it feel like it had been reheated. The skin didn't have that glossy, flavorful finish you expect from good roast duck and the meat was tough. There was barely any meat on the pieces we got which made it even more disappointing. Especially coming back from San Francisco where we had amazing duck for cheaper, this just didn't compare at all. The bo luc lac, on the other hand, was really good and honestly one of the better ones I've had. It's a Vietnamese shaken beef dish where tender beef cubes are seared and tossed in a savory garlic soy based sauce. Here, the beef was super tender and not chewy at all. The sauce soaked perfectly into the rice and every bite was really satisfying. They also layer lettuce underneath which soaks up all that sauce and was actually one of my favorite parts at the end. It also comes with tomato slices, which I personally don't enjoy, but that's just me. If I could give half stars I would, but this rounds down more than it goes up. It's frustrating because I know from other reviews that the duck we got wasn't the norm, but at the same time it's hard to ignore that multiple people saw that plate and still decided to serve it. read more

This unsuspecting spot did not disappoint. It was highlighted in a food bloggers Best Chinese Restaurants in San Diego. Parking in limited in this tiny lot, so I usually grab a banh mi at a neighboring shop. They offer a wide variety of Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. I came specifically for the Roasted Duck Noodle Soup. You have the option of wide flat rice noodles or thin egg noodles. The server said it's better with the egg noodles. Before I could snap photos of the interior of the restaurant she was already back with my food. Less than 5 minutes for sure, which makes sense. Duck is already roasted just needed to chop it, blanch the noodles, ladle the broth and garnish with onions. This was a fairly large portion, could have shared it but I was hungry so I gobbled it up. Generous 1/4 of a duck, maybe 8oz of egg noodles swimming in broth. I do appreciate that the duck was served on the side because it was rather greasy. The host was friendly, can't say my server was but that is typical for Asian restaurants. She did not come back to check on me. All the condiments and utensils are self-serve on the table. You don't come for the service. The whole duration of lunch, they had a steady flow of dine-in and to-go guests. When I was about finished, there was an elder man standing waiting for a table. I invited him to sit down at my table as I was getting up to pay my tab. I imagine this place gets pretty packed for dinner. I think I'll stick for weekday lunch to avoid a wait. There was auntie in the corner speaking loudly on her FaceTime call while making dumplings. Felt just like home. There are about 10 tables inside and the menu has a variety of Chinese inspired dishes. The must get here is definitely the egg noodles with wonton and char sui. We tried the specialty honey walnut shrimp and it was a let down. Soggy shrimp with very little sauce. The fried chicken leg was crispy and savory and the fried rice was very yummy. I loved it so much that we came back craving it the next day. The beef with egg noodle (dry): yummy sauce, super tender beef, & perfect chewy egg noodles. Fried chicken: yummy, crispy, & drizzled with a brown teriyaki like sauce. Seafood crispy noodles: had fish cakes, fishballs, shrimp, & squid. The sauce has more flavor than most places that makes this dish so I enjoyed it too. My husband really enjoyed his fried rice too. Finally moved to SD and of course have to pay respect to Minh Ky. Still as good as I remember. I have unlocked a few favorite #13 satay beef dry noodle (comes with a side of soup). If you're a satay lover this is a must order. They are so generous with the amount of tendons (3 pieces and super tender), beef balls (at least 4-5 pieces), tripe, beef slices, etc! Their vietnamese coffee is legit too. I know by how long it keeps me awake and TRUST this will keep you awake for majority of the day. No afternoon nap needed! read more

First let me say that I rarely eat noodles or pho and I am not normally a fan of Vietnamese food. However, Minh Ky changed that. Their chow fun is delicious as is their crispy chicken leg!! My usual go to dish here is the kung pao chicken with american broccoli. The portion is huge, normally enough for two. It comes chock full with perfectly cooked onions, peppers and broccoli for a small additional charge. It's not too spicy so I usually add some of the very spicy jalapeño that they always have on the table. Hubby normally gets one of the mixed seafood dishes. All are generous and delicious. Prices here are reasonable and the service is excellent!! There is usually a limited amount of parking out front and there are no outdoor tables. Delish!! read more

Since it's been chilly these past days we wanted to have something fulfilling and warming. I don't remember what my family ordered-- but I ordered a Small: Mi | Hu Tieu Xui Cao, Hoanh Thanh | Egg Noodle soup with wontons and broth. You can choose if you want it "dry" or "with broth." The broth was light and sweet. And the wontons were big and plentiful, it was stuffed with meat and black pepper. This paired really well with the broth. It also had some green onions and some char siu type meat as well. I like to make a little dipping bowl of soy sauce, vinegar, and a bit of chili oil for my wontons. We also ordered Beef with Chinese Broccoli Chow Fun. This was delicious, but I was so full from the wonton soup we just brought this home for dinner instead. The dish was huge and saucy. Chinese broccoli was cooked perfectly with some crunch to it. There was some bean sprouts in this dish as well which I loved. I enjoyed eating here and would definitely recommend it. read more

This place is an absolute hidden gem! We ordered the wonton soup with egg noodles, Mongolian beef with white rice, and shrimp fried rice and every single dish was so good. Everything tasted fresh, perfectly seasoned, and not overly salty like a lot of takeout spots. What really blew me away though was the staff -- genuinely some of the kindest and sweetest people I've ever met at a restaurant. They were so welcoming and attentive, it honestly made the whole experience even better. This is one of those little hole in the wall spots that deserves way more attention. We've driven past Minh Ky several times and when the craving for noodles/noodle soup came up, we finally decided to stop in and try them out. - PARKING - SUPER tight parking lot, you might have better luck just parking on the street. - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Small restaurant, with tables that seat 2-4 people. There's some options to push together tables for a larger party, but I wouldn't come with more than 6 if you're trying to eat ASAP. We were seated immediately luckily, and ordered food. After ordering, it took about 10 minutes to get our food. One of our dishes was incorrect though, and they also ended up forgetting about my husband's drink until we reminded them. - FOOD/DRINK - Combination Chow Fun: Not as flavorful as other places that we've tried. Decent portion size. Wonton and Dumpling Soup: They first gave me the noodle option, but I asked for without. The waitress also acknowledged I said no, so not sure where the error occurred. They did take it back and gave me my soup quickly, but I ended up finding a hair on the side of the bowl too. Soda Lemonade: Good sweetness and saltiness. The menu has a lot of items on it. So instead of looking through it, my date and I decided to just get what another table had gotten because it looked really good. It ended up being: - Combination Chow Fun: This was my favorite menu item we got. There was soo much food, it was insane! Every type of meat and all the veggies were perfectly cooked and seasoned in every bite. Even with a lot of ingredients, all the flavors worked very well together and it was amazing with the noodles they give. - Dumpling & Wonton Soup with egg noodle: Apparently they are known for their soup, but I was pretty disappointed by it. There wasn't much flavor to it and I did not like the egg noodle with it whatsoever. Rice noodles would've been a much better option. - Fresh Beef Diced Steak: First dish to come out and it was soo good! The steak was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. The leftover sauce was amazing on the rice as well. The only disappointment was the vegetables it came with.
